Chase Edmonds’ Dicey Job Security

August 22nd, 2024

Bubble popping?

The way Joe looks at it, Chase Edmonds’ chances of sticking with the Bucs are floating away faster than you can drain a hot tub.

The backup Bucs running back has been on the shelf (or, if you will, parked in the hot tub) nealry all of training camp. That’s a lot of time missed when other running backs are demonstrating their wares for the better part of the past month.

And if Edmonds cannot go tomorrow night in the final worthless preseason game, he will have missed virtually all of training camp and all preseason games. Cutdown day is Tuesday.

(The specifics of Edmonds’ injury are unknown as NFL teams are not obligated to offer up injury information until the week of the first regular season game.)

The Bucs have yet to release their practice schedule following tomorrow night’s game with the Dolphins. So if Edmonds cannot play Friday, he’s got at most three practices to prove he should belong.

If he can get on the practice field.

Maura Carey of GulfLive.com has her projected 53-man roster for the Bucs and she believes Edmonds makes the cut.

Joe sees Edmonds last year as a backup on the league’s worst rushing team. Not a starter on the league’s worst rushing team, a backup. So what are we talking about here?

Simply put, Edmonds is not the second coming of LaDanian Tomlinson. He’s never rushed for 600 yards in a season. Go with younger (cheaper) guys who have demonstrated they can get on a practice field more than three times in a month.

It’s terribly difficult for an offensive coordinator to work a guy into his offense if he can’t get out of the tub.

Bill Parcells’ words were true back in the 1970s as they are today.

“Your best ability is your availability.”

As has been said many times before.

    The best ability is availability.

Not practicing after an entire off season to rest and get the body right is a bad sign.

  2. Buc1987 Says:

    He’s not making the cut.

  3. BucVoyager Says:

If he can’t show his wares in a “worthless” preseason game, he’s toast. Doesn’t sound like a “worthless” game to me at all.

  4. PSL Bob Says:

BucVoyager, you’re fighting a losing battle!

  5. BucU Says:

    Consider yourself cut Chase.

  6. Biff Barker Says:

It’s got to be a frustrating situation for Edmunds.
    Time has run out!

  7. infomeplease Says:

In the past, the Bucs went with the experience. They brought in experienced players to fill gaps. That might be the only thing that saves CE22. The younger guys look promising. We’ll see what happens.

  8. Pickgrin Says:

Roll with White, Irving and Tucker – udfa from Ky to the practice squad

Maybe put Edmonds on IR? I doubt he gets picked up by another team if the Bucs cut him.

  9. Pewter Power Says:

I’m sure he’s hoping they keep 4. Friday decides his fate, can’t wait to see Bucky and Tucker against real starting competition Friday. White isn’t getting all the carries.

  10. JimBobBuc Says:

    IR or cut.

  11. Dew Says:

Bucs probably negotiating an injury release & I doubt they let him do anything.

  12. Jp09 Says:

Same thing can be said about sterling Shepard. I don’t see Edmonds or Shepard making the team and I don’t believe either should. Like others have said, maybe you can put them on IR. If the young guys aren’t preforming when they’re fully healed activate them and move the other to the IR.

Average players shouldn’t be given a roster spot when they haven’t practiced or proven themselves because they’ve been in the NFL for 5 years or whatever

  13. Jp09 Says:

*move the young guys to the practice squad not IR

  14. Tony Says:

I think he’s gone. They should keep DJ Williams & use him like a short down back because he’s big like Alstott, too! Keep Williams & Tucker along with White & Irving of course. Williams had that run for like 40 yards Saturday that ended up getting called back because of that penalty. He’s got the potential, too!

  15. Hodad Says:

I see Irving, and Tucker as locks. They don’t need to carry more then 2 backs, put a young one on the PS.

  16. Hodad Says:

Excuse I mean three with White.

  17. Crickett Baker Says:

AND another adage: “If you’re in the tub you can’t make the club”.

  18. SlyPirate Says:

I’m surprised he hasn’t been put on IR.

  19. Saskbucs Says:

Certainly don’t need Edmonds taking up a roster spot. Especially if it is at the expense of a Kameron Johnson or Devin Culp which I am sure it’s not but we need to let the young guys get their reps. Edmonds is JAG.

  20. Dave Pear Says:

    Bucs keep 4.

Rachaad, Bucky, Taylor, and (fingers crossed) Jefferson.

To bad for Edmunds but he’s just always hurt.

  21. Bucs Guy Says:

Shepard and Chase should be cut. Nobody is going to sign them. Keep them on speed dial if there is an injury. If you put one of the young players on the practice squad she team will grab them.

  22. teacherman777 Says:

He’s a very good football player.

    Keep him.

  23. Rod Munch Says:

I think Edmonds is easily the 3rd best back on the roster, much better than Basic Tucker for sure, but he can’t stay healthy and is old by RB standards, I don’t see how the Bucs could justify keeping him. At the same time do they still have that veterans practice squad deal? If so, he’d be a good fit there. Also, depends on how many RBs they keep. Personally I’d keep 3.

  24. Conner50 Says:

I’d rather have younger fresh legs out there than Edmonds. He didn’t do Jack last year to help the run game and was also battling injuries last year. Rather have White, Irving and Tucker on the roster with another young guy on the practice squad waiting for his shot. Edmonds is washed and no need for useless bodies on the roster. Same as Ko Kieft I like the guy but he’s useless, can’t catch or improve in the passing game then next man up.

  25. David Says:

    Right now-
    White, Irving, Tucker

So the question is how many backs are they keeping?
