Calijah Kancey Is Back!

August 21st, 2024

Perhaps the best news out of today’s joint practice with the Dolphins at One Buc Palace was the return of defensive tackle manbeast Calijah Kancey.

And it was special.

Kancey was out with an undisclosed injury last week and didn’t practice against Jacksonville.

Today Kancey, the second-year man, was cracking pads and, as Joe will document in detail later, he had two wins in two tries in 1-on-1 pass rush drills against two different Dolphins defender.

The explosion with there, as was the lateral quickness.

While stud edge rusher YaYa Diaby still is walking around in a floppy hat like a guy with a healing ankle, Kancey looks ready for Week 1.

    Best news I’ve seen today!

This news gives the Pear family very warm warms

Diaby seems confident he’ll be ready for Week 1 and that is still over 2 weeks away.. He’s an important part of the defense. I’m sure they’re being cautious with him, rightfully so.

Great news, I expect big things from him this year and I think he’s going to deliver if he’s healthy. If Kancey is dominating, and a slimmed down Vita is getting more pressure as well, maybe it will make the lack of edge pressure less of an issue. As QBs always say, interior pressure is more difficult to handle than pressure from the edge.

Best news heard in a while, go bucs !

    ADDITIONAL NOTES
Kancey has been back all week and I guess he’s been embarrassing every OL he goes up against in 1-1s. Most guys can’t get a hand on him and the ones that do are holding.

Braswell beat Wirfs 1-1! I haven’t seen Braz do a thing in the preseason games. I wonder if he’s intentionally holding back so there isn’t tape on him?

  7. White Tiger Says:

Very glad to see this! Also glad it seems to have been physical, not behavioral.

    Great read!

@SlyPirate, I have had the same thought about Brass and why they are focusing on his pass coverage so much. I did see him sack Lawrence last week two times against the Jags #1’s on Wed. Maybe it’s wishful thinking but I hope they have been holding him back…

As many have said, the key to Bucs QB pressure is the front 3. Kalijah Vita and ?Gholston?

If the three of them can occupy five blockers, it gives Yaya or Nelly a matchup against a RB, TE or a free run.

Whatever happened to SirVocea Dennis? Is the guy even practicing?

This is certainly good news, however, it highlights a fear I have. That is we are drinking our own kool-aid. With the season 2 weeks away, we have not seen much of our vets, Baker, Vita, Kancy, Dennis, and so on. We are hoping all the stars are going to line up and maybe even go to the S.B.

We have no idea how the OL, DL, DBs will perform under fire.
Other than Barton it’s all hope and prayer.

  12. teacherman777 Says:

Braswell is defintely being smart in pre-season.

    They won’t cut a 2nd round pick.

And he is putting his career first. Smart move.

  13. WiseCrack Says:

It’s not kool aid everyone is drinking.

Word to the wives, stay humble.

  14. Vanessa Anne Says:

This is great news. Especially to hear that he looks like he’s in top form.

Joe, thank you for the update.

  15. Dave Pear Says:

Just because we fans “haven’t seen” (name the player), people act like they think the coaches haven’t. Four years of this with Glennon. And now everybody else too.

If the starters fall flat and come out slow, Todd deserves every bit of bashing he gets. But there’s like 30 coaches and assistants and 70 cafeteria workers all watching these guys every day. They have a very good idea what they have in the roster.

  16. Esteban85 Says:

Oh thank God. This guy is the best hope we have for a sack! Unblockable for any duration of time

  17. Jonny Says:

Bucs defense will go as far as Kancey, Vea, LVD and AWJr will take us. Diaby is a lower tier player until he can show consistency instead of splash plays sprinkled with nothingness in between.
