Bus Blues Affected Bucs

August 14th, 2024

So Joe rolled onto the Jaguars practice fields today at 9:30 a.m. That’s when media was allowed in and the Bucs were supposed to be finding their way on the field to warm up.

They weren’t there.

The Jaguars, however, were on and around the field and the crowd in the Jags’ giant covered bleachers was in place sitting under the largest outdoor fans Joe has ever seen. (Team Glazer, take note.)

So Joe chilled and talked to Jaguars coaching intern Donald Penn, the former Bucs Pro Bowl left tackle. The conversation ended and still no Bucs?

Joe figured the team was in a long meeting staying cool in the Jaguars’ indoor facility. Nope. The Bucs hadn’t arrived.

Joe is not permitted to share the location of the Bucs’ team hotel during their Jacksonville stay, but it’s a solid drive that was made worse by travel delays this morning.

Bucs guard Luke Goedeke told Joe it wasn’t the easiest road to hop off the bus, get dressed and get on the field. Players are used to a much different practice routine.

“I mean, just coming out here through the cirumstances, taking a 40-plus minute bus ride here doesn’t help the cause at all,” Goedeke said. “We get tightened up there. And then you have to be careful with your body and you come out and everything is heightened. Intensity’s a little different against a different team but I wouldn’t say it was really a change from our regular practice intensity. It was good work.”

Joe will have detailed practice notes later, but this certainly was an odd joint practice for a few reasons. One was the Bucs’ late arrival, which likely had to do with Todd Bowles being critical of the team’s energy early in practice.

Bowles did not mention the buscapades, but Joe will say it was a factor.

Here we go with the excuses.

Sounds like the a tough away game.

I appreciate the Bucs brass intentionally putting these guys through it today, have you seen our schedule?

  3. RJBucnut Says:

The falcons just landed Judon. Licht better get off his ass and go get a bonified edge rusher!

Jacksonville sucks. The town, I mean.

  5. Hearty Dikerson Says:

Reports said we got absolutely thrashed by the Jags. Secondary is as torched left and right. Zero big plays on offense. Tons of incompletions by Baker. Sucks the first opportunity they get to hit another team in practice, they come out completely flat.

    First stop, overreaction junction.

  7. Tyler Says:

This is the second post you mention Goedeke as a guard. What did I miss??

  8. kgh4life Says:

Why would they book a hotel 40 min away?

    Insert Allen Iverson…

    We’re talking about practice?

  10. Heath Hunt Says:

I think we all love the increased coverage of the NFL all year but definitely one of the drawbacks is concerns about performance in joint practices and interception counts during training camp.

  11. Defense Rules Says:

Every team starts Game 1 with a 0-0 record regardless of what the preseason looked like.

  12. Chad Says:

Hearty Dickerson, first off baker wasn’t the problem, he threw multiple touchdowns, Mike caught two that I know of for sure, but defense was terrible, on top of that Trey and mcmillin each at drops, Trey had 3 and mcmillin had 2. It wasn’t a great day over all, also Mike Evans dropped a touchdown pass from baker. Let’s not over react yet cuz we have another joint practice tomorrow

Ugh… Falcons trade for Matthew Judon with a 3rd rd pick.
    Depressing.
    Licht dropped the ball here.

The Godetke as a guard thing. If you’re an obsessive fan like me you check out the team photos, and the Bucs team photographer always lists Luke as a guard when he has been our starting right tackle for over a year now. There is a significant difference, It is the details that can set off my perverse perfectionist tendencies. I would willingly take his job if he doesn’t want to do it right. I am pretty sure that Luke is justifiably proud of being an above average tackle in this league, and would like to be credited as such.

    @kgh4life
If I were to guess I would say they booked a hotel 40 minutes away because Jacksonville (the city) sucks so bad.
I grew up in J’ville, years ago it wasn’t bad. Sort of a “big city with a small town vibe” kind of deal.
My wife and I were down there a couple months ago and it is awful. The area around the stadium (previously The Gator Bowl) has never been great but now it’s like any other 3rd world, democrat ran city.
They probably stayed around St.Augustine or maybe a little farther south.

Based on what I saw, yes, the Bucs started slow, but they came on strong toward the end. Baker was off, but the Jags’ defense made up for it by committing a lot of dumb penalties. In fact, the Jags seemed to be penalized on all phases. Maybe the Joe(s) will back me up on this. Trask had a strong arm, and there were a lot of Florida Gator fan boys in the stands cheering him on. Like Joe mentioned, Bowles was spending a lot of time with the offense. I didn’t know about the agreement between him and Coach Pederson.

Trevor Lawrence and the rest of the Jags’ QBs were inconsistent. The Jags’ receivers had some impressive catches but primarily against our third and fourth stringers, although I was worried about McCollum’s performance. He was the very first Bucs player on the practice field getting warmed up. Lawrence and Co. were sacked quite a few times. Vea came to play. Per the rules of practice, defenses can’t put the QB on the ground, so they often just let the play go ahead, and Lawrence had some completions under those conditions. Jags’ fans cheered anyway. I just shook my head. Why burst their bubble?

The Bucs will come back tomorrow and make up for the slow start.

Yes J Ville sucks. Traffic on 95 is as bad as 75 in Tampa during rush hour. Glad my wife only has to go over there twice a year From Tallahassee and stay overnight. She won’t stay anywhere near downtown and has to take back roads to get downtown by 8am.

  18. Bakerfan Says:

Jags beat writers said our defensive lineman tore up the Jags. Multiple potential sacks or hurries by Vea. If a real game it would not of been pretty. So who to believe. I will go with the Jags beat writers. It did seem like the Bucs safeties got torched though

  19. CAD Says:

If you know anything about Jacksonville traffic you would know that they could have booked a hotel 5 miles or less from the facility and still taken 40 minutes to get ther

  20. Saskbucs Says:

100% that was a factor in a bad practice. Guys are going down with injuries everyday around the league. You don’t sit on a bus for 40 mins and then rush your warmup into what should be the most intense training camp practice yet. Professional athletes have routines to get their minds and bodies right. Take the positives today and forget the negatives. Guaranteed they are there early tomorrow, the WRs aren’t dropping as many balls and the secondary is putting it in gear without worrying about blowing a hammy.

I’m not saying they didn’t get warm up time today but no one likes to feel rushed. Ever ran from your car to the first tee and played well right away?

  21. Dave Pear Says:

Terrible planning by Bucs admin group. Horrendous. Let’s see what we have in their backups.

  22. westernbuc Says:

Maybe a forty minute bus ride is a coach’s way of getting them prepped for road games when they matter.

  23. KABucs Says:

    Excerpt from the Bigcatcountry site:
“Per John Shipley on Jaguars on SI, the starting OL today gave up seven total Trevor Lawrence sacks by his count (six sacks in 11-on-11 teams and one additional coverage sack in 7-on-7 drills). Much of the pressure on the day came directly up the middle from Buccaneers’ DT Vita Vea and DT William Gholston”.

    Sounds better to me.

  24. heyjude Says:

It sounds like maybe the Bucs couldn’t get a hotel near the facility. Was that Jacksonville’s idea to make it harder for the Bucs? Sounds fishy. It isn’t a busy time of year in Jacksonville for tourism. It would be interesting to find out.
