Bucs Training Camp 2024: Practice No. 16 Notes

August 19th, 2024

Terrific catch to end practice.

There are still training camp practices to be had as the Bucs begin to prepare for the joint-practice with the Dolphins on Wednesday. And today’s practice was the third-last fully open practice to the Bucs’ local pen and mic club.

* Underwear football is still a thing. Only padding the Bucs wore was their helmets.

* There seemed to be a lot more cross-pollination today of players between the first and second teams.

* Baker Mayfield begins practice with a completion to Cade Otton to the left side.

* Mike Evans on a crossing pattern from the right from Mayfield. This was such a sssmmmooottthhh play. Mayfield threw the ball effortlessly and the ball was perfectly thrown as it hit Evans right in his hands as he turned upfield and got some TAC.

* Otton catches another pass from Mayfield on the left side.

* Rachaad White runs right.

* Undrafted rookie receiver Kameron Johnson catches a Mayfield pass in the left flat.

* Bucky Irving runs right.

* Mayfield finds rookie receiver Jalen McMillan open down the left seam.

* Camp meat receiver Cody Thompson pulls in a pass from Kyle Trask.

* Sean Tucker runs to the right.

* D.J. Williams runs up the middle and there is nothing there.

* Trask was very inconsistent today. Some really good plays, some bad throws. This was one of the latter: Thompson got past Keenan Isaac deep on the right side and Trask way overthrew him.

* Sterling Shepard is working out on a side field with a trainer and he’s wearing a helmet like the rest of his teammates. So no, he was not technically on floppy hat patrol. Just the fact he was wearing a helmet seems to suggest he may be close to returning.

* Mayfield with a very short pass to Otton to the left.

* Same thing from Mayfield to Godwin, only to the right.

* Mayfield to McMillan down the right side.

* Otton gets open deep down the left seam and Mayfield hits him. Otton then crashes to the ground making a loud thump in the process. Otton may be having his best training camp.

* McMillan on a crossing pattern from the left and Mayfield connects with him.

* Mayfield pumps twice as he wanted Trey Palmer deep down the right side but instead, Mayfield checks it down and throws to McMillan on the right side.

* Mayfield throws to Irving in the right flat and Zyon McCollum raced in to confront Irving behind the line, cutting off any chance for some YAC from the rookie.

* Trask throws deep to Palmer down the right side and the pass is just off the outstretched fingertips of Palmer. Tykee Smith was in coverage.

* Sounds like a character in “The Sopranos:” UFL product, tight end Sal Cannella does a pretty good job of saving a pick. Trask threw to the left sideline for Cannella but J.J. Russell had inside position on Cannella. Just as Russell was about to grab the ball, Cannella reached over Russell’s shoulder and pulled the ball away from Russell for a decent completion.

* Good Kyle: This was simply a beautiful pass and maybe the best Joe has seen Trask throw: He rolled right and a couple of steps before the right sideline, threw about 20-25 yards downfield and perfectly hit Tucker who was running down the right sideline, dropping the ball right in the basket. Tucker never broke stride as he raced in for a score.

* Williams catches a pass from Trask over the middle.

* Cody Thompson goes low to dig up a Trask pass near the left sideline.

* White runs up the middle for nothing.

* Mayfield tries to connect with Evans on a crossing pattern from the left. However, UDFA rookie corner Marcus Banks was tight with the coverage and knocked the ball out of Evans’ hands. Pleased with himself (he should have been), Banks stops, stares at his defensive teammates on the sideline and poses with his hands on his hips for a job well done.

* Mayfield is flushed up the middle.

* White gets pushed around trying to run inside.

* Mayfield tries to hit Chris Godwin over the middle on what appeared to be a crossing pattern from the left and the ball is off Godwin’s hands. The ball may have been tipped by someone’s fingertips as there was a defender a couple of yards right in front of Godwin.

* The exact same play this time it was dropped by Palmer.

* Irving runs right and there isn’t much there.

* Kameron Johnson runs right. Yes, you read that correctly.

* Trask way overthrows Thompson over the middle. Good thing as Thompson was surrounded by three red jerseys (defense).

* Tucker runs left, cuts upfield along the left sideline and has a really nice gain.

* White runs left for a few.

* Mayfield throws deep for Godwin down the right side as Godwin runs from the left, hauls the pass in and runs for six.

* Mayfield throws short for Evans along the left sideline.

* Quick snaps and Mayfield tries deep for Evans down the left sideline but the two can’t make the connection.

* Mayfield tries for Johnson again, this time to the right sideline but the ball is way out of bounds.

* Ryan Miller on a crossing pattern running in from the left catches a Mayfield pass, turns upfield to the right and scampers down the right sideline for a score.

* Tucker up the middle for nothing.

* Bad Kyle! Truly horrific pass by Trask. A defender (Joe couldn’t get the number) had a clear shot blitzing up the middle on Trask and he pulled up not wanting to truck Trask. Maybe this spooked Trask because Trask then tried to throw right and Anthony Nelson, who was at the line, picked it off. Nelson told Joe after practice Trask’s pass hit him in the grill. Nelson looked like he may have been running a stunt inside as he picked Trask off right about where a tackle should be. Inexcusable throw.

* White runs up the middle and angles to the right sideline. Banks pesters White all the way down the field (but not allowed to tackle him) to where at one point near the end of White’s run, he tried to stiff arm Banks.

* White runs up the middle left of the ball and just when he got past the line of scrimmage, he got jerked backward. UDFA rookie linebacker Antonio Grier Jr. (Arkansas) attempted to strip White of the ball which caused White to spin around and get pulled backward.

* Excellent catch: Mayfield throws for Palmer deep down the right seam. The pass was behind Palmer but Palmer, with really good body control, slides down to stop his forward momentum and is able to reach back and catch the ball.

Second-last training camp practice is early Tuesday morning.

  1. Hodad Says:

Sounds like Trask won’t be getting a second contract as back up. Bucs need to upgrade from Trask, and Wolford next season.

  2. StormyInFl Says:

More Kyle Trask picks to defensive linemen….

This shouldn’t even be open to debate anymore. The guy is a backup. Barely.

  3. GoneGator Says:

Biggest takeaway so far is we look better against ourselves than we do against other teams in practice. That’s a little concerning

  4. Bee Says:

Good thing we haven’t seen the DL picks in game. I like Trask, but it would do him some good to be on another team. ATL has the best QBs in the division

  5. Erik w/ UniqueModernArt.com Says:

Tucker is our big-play RB (only RB with 20+ yard runs), Bucky might be our consistent solid gainer at RB1, R White can try to hold them off, but I’m sure he’ll be utilized primarily in the passing game as most have speculated. (Once things shake out by midseason)

  6. A Bucs Fan Says:

Rooting for Kam to make the team and Sterling Shepherd to be the David Moore of 2024.

  7. Dave Pear Says:

Cue Irish Otard to once again spew an AI generated diatribe on how these practice notes prove that Glennon is better than Baker LOL. Glad Palmer made a nice catch.

  8. Drunkinybor Says:

Palmer and his drops are getting ridiculous. He’s about to get a new nickname. Greasypalmser

  9. Bucsmarley Says:

Tired of buc fans trashing our own players. Hard to judge a backup qb when they don’t get to play with the core starters. You guys should be supportive instead of sounding like a trumper and bashing our guys

  10. Christopher Schiefen Says:

Dunno how Cody has that game and you keep calling him camp meat. He might be the 6th receiver, maybe even 5th over Rakim.

  11. SB~LV Says:

    How is Wolford’s chest injury?
I prefer Wolford over Trask as the #2 after watching the 2 games

  12. BucsFanSince1996 Says:

I know there are multiple GMs that post in the comments section here ready to kick him to the curb but I’m confident Trask can be a competent backup QB in the NFL. He’s learning a new offense and still has 20 days until the first regular season game. It.took Brady a good part of a season to learn a new offense here in Tampa. Maybe the GM’s can cut Trask a little slack.

I hope Baker stays healthy, but if Trask had to come in and play a couple games he should be OK when playing behind an upgraded O-line and with a better running game.

  13. My Momma Says:

Hey Joe! Who stuck out on defence when stopping the run today?

  14. Joe Says:

    How is Wolford’s chest injury?

    Didn’t practice.

  15. JimBobBuc Says:

    Joe,
Other than Evans and Godwin, which WR has the best hands? I’m betting it’s Miller or Cody. I’m tired of drops!

  16. Elmore James Says:

No mention of Trask since his good showing against the Jags, I thought he was traded or something, yet here he shows up on an off day, hmm.

  17. Rod Munch Says:

Camp Cupcake actually had a practice today?!? Wow, I’m legit shocked…

Then I see, underwear practice, so not a real one. Just as expected.

Tucker is our big-play RB (only RB with 20+ yard runs)

  19. BigBoiBuc Says:

@Joe – a list of who didn’t practice today? Thanks

  20. Joe Says:

Other than Evans and Godwin, which WR has the best hands? I’m betting it’s Miller or Cody. I’m tired of drops!

    McMillan.

  21. SlyPirate Says:

Bucky and Tucker can catch, too. White’s days are numbered if he can’t produce

  22. Oneilbuc Says:

    Well at this point I don’t think TRASK even care but he was still the better quarterback last year in training camp that can’t be denied or less you lie . But at the same time don’t want to hear no excuses for Baker when he plays bad it’s NFC Championship or bust!!;

  23. Fred McNeil Says:

We haven’t really seen White yet. Maybe Friday Night.

  24. heyjude Says:

Thank you for the notes! A lot of movement to the right ↗️ With White up the middle, but to the right too.

Love hearing about Evans and Mayfield getting it done. Sounds like Baker had a good day while Kyle was good and bad. Kyle might just be getting nervous now about where he will be as backup QB. It has to be a lot of stress even with Wolford being injured. It seems as though Kyle and Cody have synced. Go Bucs!

  25. All_da_way Says:

Kameron Johnson should make the roster. He can catch and he can return punts.

  26. Chad Says:

Oneilbuc would rather trask start and play bad instead of baker start or play at all. Just make sure you hold every other player on the team on both sides of the ball accountable also when they play bad. Do sit there silent and then if baker plays bad all of sudden your ready to talk s**t.

  27. Drunkinybor Says:

I think Chase Edmondd might be kicked to the cutb

  28. Drunkinybor Says:

    *curb

  29. Mike S Says:

Trask might be somewhat demoralized. Can you blame the guy? He got a serious jobbing here in Tampa.

Last time he faced Mac Jones he nearly threw for 500 yards. 4 years later he’s got 12 NFL passes under his belt.

So yeah maybe the lightning might not be there like it was last year.

But if you are Trask every moment you step on the field it has to be like an audition – because it is one.

This next preseason contest he needs to bring his A game and act like it’s his super bowl.

It’s tape for 2025 when he’s looking for a job at a minimum. Got a feeling we might see Trask on the field for more than just a couple of snaps this season, too.

All these FSU and Baker Boi hater clowns what do they know? The two QBs they love have career losing records. They dumped on the GOAT after he handed them a Super Bowl. CLOWNS.

Having said that 63% comp 96 RTG doesn’t suck. When people say that was a bad performance it strains their credibility. There were a couple of throws in that game were big time NFL caliber including the TD pass – threading the needle on the sprint.

I’m sorry but last year was not enough to show me Baker Mayfield is the answer. He played captain checkdown for most of the season and leaned on the defense and yeah a couple of games he broke out. Done some study on him enough now and that appears his pattern.

When he tries to play above that pattern he takes too many physical risks and gets hurt. He’s deal is to feed White to draw the defense close and then go over the top to Evans hoping he gets behind defenders. It’s short or deep. Not super complicated. So yeah many high percentage throws lowers the risk and kept the INTs down. When it worked it was because Evans is a HOF WR. Then against the Pack he fed Godwin after there was some noise about him being forgotten. The Pack seemed to forget him in their game plan too. 12 targets to Evans’ 6.

With Mayfield there aren’t many complex layered route schemes that include the intermediate zone. Mayfield is 1 read, checkdown or run most of the time. To his credit – he knows how to play this style proficiently. There is a ceiling to it though and now we’re going to see if the NFC South adapts.

The complex scheme was a staple of Brady’s game – slide around in the pocket – watch the defender & look off the defender – the routes force defenders to commit – pre and post snap reads – throw guys open anywhere on the field and be accurate within windows. The GOAT was a technician.

When you watch Trask out there that’s the kind of game he’s trying to emulate. For a guy who hasn’t had the PT it’s not bad at all and very much worth investing in. Everyone forgets Trask just hasn’t gotten the PT yet. He hasn’t yet been given his chance and dispite that his results are credible. Trask just needs to get on the field for some meangingful snaps.

  30. GoneGator Says:

Going to be a long year for Trask devotees.

Personally I think he’s going to be a decent back up. I don’t think he’ll challenge for the starting job but he could keep us afloat if our running game improves.

Mostly worried about our D personally

  31. Elmore James Says:

    @ Mike S

Great comments. Yeah, I don’t get it. Playing against the Jags with all backups, Trask completed 63%, no INTs, threw a tight TD pass, posted a 96 passer rating, and the hate from the FSU and Baker bois has known no bounds. Even Joe here made no mention of Trask’s very respectable play against the Jags. Weird, huh?

  32. Dave Pear Says:

Of course the only thing the Otard has left is to complain about quarterbacks. She loves the bad ones and hates the good ones. Deranged, but the explanation is “tarded.”

  33. Dave Pear Says:

PS – Glennon isn’t benched because of this chat room. He isn’t good enough, as judged by professionals paid millions to win or get fired.

Back to your regularly scheduled Hopium.

  34. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Pear Bottom Dave trying to be funny. So sad, if anyone’s laughing it’s at him for the dumb barbs he throws at his favorite poster Oneilbuc

  35. BucsGuy Says:

Mike S you sure used a lot of words just to say you have no idea what you’re talking about and are blinded by your fandom. I’m not a Trask hater but he’s just not starting QB material in this league, at least not for this team. I hope when he gets a fresh start next year he can make his name somewhere but this is his last year with the Bucs guaranteed

  36. Let ‘em bake Says:

Ryan. Tannehill. Please. A quality back up might mean the difference this year , one never knows….

  37. Gipper Says:

    MikeS,
You are the embodiment of quantity over quality. I guess you want to be paid by the word? You have no idea what you are talking about re Baker Mayfield. Who exactly is Baker. “checking down to”? Mike Evans had a great year last year with over 1000 yards receiving and high reception totals. The same is true of Chris Godwin. Serious O line problems last year prevented play action from working. Moreover, with Canales committed to 2 yards and a cloud of dust on 1st and 2nd down, 3rd down was usually 3rd and long and everyone knew that the defense would be coming after Baker. He did not have the luxury of going through progressions when you are giving him 2.25 seconds to throw the ball. Any fair minded analysis would conclude that what Mayfield accomplished without a running game last year was remarkable.

  38. Dave Pear Says:

    Fat99 said —burp— more nachos

  39. heyjude Says:

Agree with some of what Mike S said. Kyle has grown on me. I like him, however he hasn’t really stepped up to a number one backup QB. The coaches have been working with him for years. No other teams have reached out for him, and many have needed QBs.

Mac Jones is an entirely different QB. He was drafted in the 1st round/15th pick from Alabama. On that draft night, while waiting, he ran out to congratulate every single person drafted before him. He also was the QB right after Brady for the Pats. Rumor has it Mac had problems with the coaches at the Pats. Brady was on the Pats for 20 years. Big shoes to fill coming in after that. Mac now has found his fit with the Jags. I actually was hoping we would take him as the backup to Baker. But the Jags got him. They don’t have to worry about Trevor getting hurt again. They have a strong backup. If Baker gets hurt, and I hate to say this, it will be worrisome.

Baker was the right fit after Brady’s two seasons. He will be even better this year. Go Bucs!!

  40. JD Still Says:

This practice was hardly one to be pointed to as a fair comparison , ( but then again, what has?), Mayfield was 14 for 18 , with all the throws ,( 13 of 18) going to our top tier recievers with multiple throws going to Evans , Godwin, JMac, and Otton , Kyle had eight throws , all to lower tier recievers with only multiple passes going to one reciever, (Thompson) , if Mayfield had to throw to those recievers I doubt he would of had any completions. As for TD’s Mayfield threw two out of his 14 completions for scores ,(14%), and one of Kyle’s four completions was for a score , giving him a much higher touchdown to completion ratio of 25% , (if you want to play that game ), but I am looking forward to this weeks preseason practices and game against Miami , it will be the first time a direct comparison of Mayfield and Trask will be possible , possible yes, probable no, Mayfield will probably throw his little three of four dink and dunks , leaving Kyle to handle the majority of passes in the game , spread out to the rest of the recievers , none to top tier , but you have to play with what you are given , and it will give them a shot to be seen, being thrown to by an elite passer , that they would never have otherwise .

  41. Robbie Says:

Notice how they say mayfield throws here and mayfield throws to whoever, but for how many yards how many completions they both have their good days and bad days.

  42. Oneilbuc Says:

Dave queer. Their you go again all you have to say is Baker ain’t that good and you start crying like little girl lol 🤣🤣🤣 !! I told you I control your emotions you are the biggest coward on here.

  43. Oneilbuc Says:

Chad. I call it like I see it bro regardless of the player when Baker played good last year I gave him his credit. And when he played bad I said he played bad it’s that simple to me.
