Bucs Training Camp Notes & Nuggets Day 11

August 7th, 2024

Stiff morning breeze out at One Buc Palace. It’s almost comfortable under the cloud cover. Joe is parked in the covered bleachers sitting next to a 1st-grader who keeps asking his parents why nobody tackles anyone. Underwear football, kid. Welcome to training camp when the team wears shorts and vows not to play real football. The youngster got annoyed and defiantly refused an ice pop.

*It’s a military appreciation day crowd that fills about 75 percent of the seats. Great job by the Bucs, as always, to acknowledge those who have far more important lives than Joe’s.

*Injuries and/or rest days: Chase Edmonds still with a floppy hat. He hasn’t practiced all summer. Linebacker SirVocea Dennis also still in a floppy hat with an injury. Undrafted rookie receiver Kameron Johnson isn’t practicing. Veteran receiver Sterling Shepard has a day off along with safety Jordan Whitehead. The Bucs aren’t required to issue an injury report in August, and Todd Bowles isn’t one to talk much about them. Joe Tryon-Shoyinka is nursing his bad shoulder and does not participate in much more than drills. Yaya Diaby has no boot on his bad ankle and is walking the sidelines wearing a white floppy hat. Diaby’s endless smile still gets a perfect score from the judges.

*Free agent cornerback Tavierre Thomas, who has found his share of picks in camp, has a bad drop in warmups with nobody around him.

*Sure felt like like there was extended play-install time today. Offense vs. defense action on the field began at 9:22 a.m after an 8:30 start to practice.

11-on-11 kicks off with a run up the gut by Rachaad White. Useless for Joe to assess in underwear football.

*Baker Mayfield to Mike Evans is incomplete over the middle. Ball was overthrown but it looked like Evans was running at 80 percent speed.

*Mayfield rolls right and hits tight end Cade Otton with K.J. Britt in coverage. Slight dive by Otton for the 12-yard gain. Great start to a strong day by Otton.

*Another run up the gut. Joe yawns.

*Lots of defensive substitutions but the first-team offense remains. Mayfield complete to wide open Otton in front of Thomas for about 13 yards.

*Pitch left to Bucky Irving …

*No. 2 QB Kyle Trask enters and fires deep behind the defense to Cody Thompson for about 35 yards. Undrafted rookie safety Marcus Banks was a step and a half behind.

*Handoff left. (Yawn)

*Trask executes a screen to running back Sean Tucker.

*Play-action for No. 3 QB John Wolford to undrafted rookie RB D.J. Williams on a crossing route. Williams has some wheels.

Red zone work starts with Mike Evans catching a zipped pass from from Mayfield in between two defenders. The crowd wakes up with a big cheer. Even bigger is the next play; Mayfield hits Godwin in the back of the end zone on the left side in full stride. Lots of touch on that ball traveling about 30 yards in the air.

*Mayfield complete for about 10 yards to Otton.

*A Mayfield dumpoff complete.

*Mayfield fires a fastball to Otton for an eight-yard gain just short of the goal line. Ball was a little behind Otton. He’s showing great hands today.

*Trask enters and dumps the ball off to Tucker.

*Trask with a quick throw to the outstretched hands of rookie TD Devin Culp. It’s complete! Fellow rookie, linebacker Kalen DeLoach, was all over him.

*Trask rolls out and throws ball away.

*Joe Tryon-Shoyinka seen working during the break with a trainer on a separate field.

*Film Study! Luke Goedeke is so often seen with his tablet during breaks watching snaps of the prior series. (See photo above)

11-on-11 is back and Mayfield completes to Evans for a 10 yard pass with a lot of green grass in front of him. Evans was way too open with Jamel Dean in coverage.

*White runs up the gut.

*White runs wide right and is tackled. Hey, no tackling. Joe couldn’t see who was the aggressive defender.

*Incomplete deep shot from Mayfield to Godwin left with Tykee Smith covering. Rare deep shot sent in the direction of No. 14.

*Now the wind really kicks up with dark clouds moving in.

*Mayfield to Otton underneath. Seemed like the whistle blew as Mayfield released, signaling play is dead because he was in the pocket too long for it to be realistic. But hey, little is realistic in underwear football.

*Veteran newcomer cornerback Bryce Hall has a nice pass breakup on Godwin.

*Wolford completes a 10-yard out to undrafted rookie receiver Tanner Knue.

*The Bucs’ lightning detection equipment sounds the alarm and fans and players are told practice will be relocated immediately into the Glazer Shed.

*Mayfield comes out with a sharp throw outside to Evans for 10 yards. It was kind of a mock quick throw to set up a field goal.

*Trask comes out sharp with a 40-yard shot to a camp-meat receiver who had his jersey pulled up so his number barely could be seen. Joe is told it’s Cody Thompson.

*Mayfield fires deep to Trey Palmer over middle behind the defense. He was open by two strides. Palmer celebrates touchdown by throwing ball in the stands.

*Trask complets deep middle to Knue. And then goes back to Knue short and over the middle.

*Thompson shows he can block, too, and engages a defnesive back with a nice block to spring Irving on a wide run.

*INTERCEPTION! Trask picked by safety Kaevon Merriweather on an overthrow over the middle. Nice diving grab as he went to the turf.

*Another pick!! Shining rookie cornerback Tyrek Funderburk snags a floater to the right side from Wolford on a 15-yard pass to apparently nobody in particular.

*Wolford is blitzed and fires out of bounds.

*Sliding diving catch on a Wolford rollout by Knue. Nice grab. More impressive considering Antoine Winfield Jr. was in coverage.

*Wolford play-acton right to Knue for 1 yard. Nothing open.

*Zyon McCollum breaks up Wolford to Thompson and waves/wags a Dikembe Mutumbo finger.

*Christian Izien with blitz up the gut that would have sacked Mayfield.

*White puts a stiff arm in the face of Izien (?) which generates some after whistle extras. Some discussion whether it was No. 29 Izien or No. 39 Banks.

*Mayfield throws an out route for eight yards to Palmer. Mayfield seems to have tweaked an ankle/foot. Looked like he stepped on someone. He kind of pounds his toe on the ground a bit and doesn’t come out.

*Vita Vea absolutely pancakes Graham Barton. Palmer got off balance after a quick getoff to his chest and Vea kept coming. Joe suspects Barton will hear about it in the film room.

*A Bucky Irving run. Dude sure looks extra quick on turf. Especially noticable after the first part of practice was outdoors.

*Mayfield takes a deep shot to receiver Ryan Miller. It’s overthrown with second-year defensive back Josh Hayes in coverage.

*Irving shows extra-quick feet on another run. Almost a jump cut.

*Trask throws a little behind Culp, who can’t hold on. Catchable, though.

*Ball now placed on 2 yard line for this session. And it starts with a Mayfield touchdown over the middle to Mike Evans with Tykee Smith in coverage. Smith slapped the ball away but a little too late. Evans clearly had possession.

*Mayfield rolls left and hits McMillan, who so often seems slippery and open on short to medium underneath routes.

*Mayfield thumbgate is a big nothing.

*Trask run is followed by a Trask PICK by Hayes over the middle. That can’t happen, Kyle. And Trask’s reaction concurs.

*Practice is over!

*Cameron Brate and Ali Marpet are seen mingling after practice.

*A downpour was outside the Glazer Shed after practice and most players walked 150 yards or so back to headquarters. Not Winfield. The dude must not like rain. After talking to Joe, Winfield put on his helmet and said he was going to sprint the distance. And dammit, that’s what Winfield did.

Great place to watch the game, and good fun will be had!

Hey Joe, can you talk about Barton more?
Heard he is struggling. Any truth to that? Thanks.
He’s had bad snaps. His balance isn’t always tight. Bucs say he’s picking up the offense extremely well and doing well overall. It’s hard to say. Joe has seen good and bad. Anyone making definitive statements about Barton’s play is probably not being fair. Opening day is a month away. –Joe

  2. Defense Rules Says:

Joe … ‘Play-action for No. 3 QB John Wolford to undrafted rookie RB D.J. Williams on a crossing route. Williams has some wheels.’

DJ seems to be having a very good camp. I’m really hoping that they keep him because we need a bigger back for the short yardage & goal line stuff. Still, the Bucs will probably only keep 4 backs on the 53-man roster, and probably only dress 3 per game. Obviously White & Irving are keepers, so I guess it’ll come down to keeping 2 RBs out of Edmonds, Tucker & Williams. That’s a tough choice.

  3. Capt Jimbo Neal Says:

Joe, seems like they have Trask throwing a lot of deep balls … 35 yards … 40 yards … deep middle … or is that him making the decision to go deep?

  4. Saskbucs Says:

Defense Rules, I would be inclined to keep the young pups. Potential there… I don’t mind Edmonds but he’s been around the block, his peak is in the past. Keep the hungry youngsters unless one of them doesn’t have the head on his shoulders required for the room. Sounds like Baker had a great day today.

  5. Dave Pear Says:

Obviously Trashk is outplaying everyone in the league and the Bucs coaches and management are maroons.

    Oh wait.

    Mike Glennon >> Trashk

    Thank you, Joe!

So glad that on military appreciation day that 75% of the seats were filled!

All of it sounds good. Too funny “Mayfield thumbgate.” Good for Winfield in the rain. Love the Rock Riley video of YaYa.

  7. Rod Munch Says:

“The youngster got annoyed and defiantly refused an ice pop.”

Poor kid, will never know what it’s like to go to UT in the 90s and see a field full of future HOF’ers who are talking trash with the crowd, putting on a show for the people even though it’s just a practice.

But kid, don’t let the lack of manliness screw you out a treat. Keep in mind every day of your life is downhill from here, and when you grow up and pick your gender and apply to get your lab grown baby and you take them to the cyberfootball practice dome, you’ll think back to this moment in 2024 as the good old days.

  8. Rod Munch Says:

    Another excellent write-up Joe!

  9. NCBuc Says:

There goes Davie Pearless spewing tripe out of his finger tips again. For a guy to claim to be right about all things football….. Why is it that you refuse to acknowledge that your take on Wolford was dead off? Oh wait…. I get it now! You said you were a UF grad or something to that effect. So Trask really did steal your lunch money? Maybe took your girl from you? I won’t go on for your sake. I just know that all the smoke you bring about Trask being the worst is now obsolete. You swore Wolford would be the QB 2. Anyone in their right mind who has watched anything on him would know he’s Trashk! Now every word your little finger tips type are Trashk! Go ahead and use your other screen name now to spew more gibberish about the guy that took your lunch. BA’s red swollen limp pen

  10. NCBuc Says:

Oh BTW…. Thanks for the notes and tidbits Joes! You guys keep getting better every year! Been around about 10 of them. Keep it up!

  11. JimBobBuc Says:

” Mayfield hits Godwin in the back of the end zone on the left side in full stride. Lots of touch on that ball traveling about 30 yards in the air.” Good news – the touch throws and deep throws are where Bake needs to raise his game.

” Trask rolls out an throws ball away.” Really? It’s practice, try to make a play!

” Mayfield fires deep to Trey Palmer over middle behind the defense. He was open by two strides. Palmer celebrates touchdown by throwing ball in the stands.” I’d love to see the players give the ball to a kid (or a vet today).

” Vita Vea absolutely pancakes Graham Barton. Palmer got off balance after a quick getoff to his chest and Vea kept coming. Joe suspects Barton will hear about it in the film room. ” Good to hear Vita making plays. Barton is smart and will learn from it, and don’t forget all the Vita’s pancakes could keep IHOP going for a while.

  12. Joe Says:

Joe, seems like they have Trask throwing a lot of deep balls … 35 yards … 40 yards … deep middle … or is that him making the decision to go deep?

Not. Sure. Thinking he’s making the “right” reads per Bowles.

  13. Kenton Smith Says:

We’ll definitely have a QB 2 competition throughout this preseason. Too important a position not to.

  14. NJBUCS Says:

Joe, do you know when Sirius is coming to Tampa for the training camp tour?

  15. Permanently Moderated Says:

    Pretty funny, Rod Munch. 😆

  16. Oxycondomns Says:

    trask the poor mans jameis

  17. firethecannons Says:

Joe you wrote this: “parked in the covered bleachers sitting next to a 1st-grader who keeps asking his parents why nobody tackles anyone. Underwear football, kid. Welcome to training camp when the team wears shorts and vows not to play real football. The youngster got annoyed and defiantly refused an ice pop.” Lol! Joe, you write really well, you could write a book–fiction. It is easy to read this, I can completely visualize this. Love it Joe!

  18. firethecannons Says:

Rod Munch well said, its a scary situation were in no doubt. choose wisely everyone.

  19. garro Says:

I don’t blame the kid! Although I might have taken the Ice Pop. LOL

“I wanna see number 50 knock someone on there butt!” 🙂

    Perfect Joe!

    Go Bucs!

  20. SlyPirate Says:

    2 QUESTIONS
    1. Does SirVocea Dennis make the team?
Injured last year. Injured this year. With Deloach coming on, I think Dennis will be moved to IR, Practice Squad, or simply cut.

    2. Does Chase Edmonds make the team?
I’d be disappointed to see Chase take a spot from Tucker. Sounds like he’s killing it.
