Bucs Training Camp 2024: Practice 17 Notes

August 20th, 2024

Several carries.

Not a bunch to type about in this practice.

The way the Bucs had practice set up today, the offensive players not on the field stood behind the offense on the field and the assigned media viewing area creating a wall of white jerseys. You can get a glimpse of what Joe was looking at here.

So to suggest Joe was screened on the practice field is an understatement. As a result, the notes won’t be that long in this here missive.

* Bucs offensive coordinator Liam Coen is a hands-on coach. How much so? Well, in team drills early in practice, Coen called a play in the huddle. When the huddle clapped and broke, Joe could hear Coen yell, “Let’s go.” Then, Coen lined up at wide receiver.

* Tristan Wirfs either had a bum ankle or he was taking his good ol’ time changing shoes. Either way, the optics were bad when Wirfs was on the ground, grabbing/massaging his ankle and five Bucs staffers stood over him including Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht and assistant general manager John Spytek.

* Yes, unfortunately, the Bucs today were holding an underwear football practice. So no hitting and not tackling to the ground.

* Baker Mayfield tries for Jalen McMillan deep over the middle and the pass was overthrown.

* A Dave Canales special: Rachaad White up the middle, this time for a good gain.

* Mayfield to Evans along the left sideline for a big gain.

* Bucky Irving with a big run down the left sideline.

* Irving with a big run down the left sideline,

* Mayfield with a looping pass to Chris Godwin down the right sideline.

* Sean Tucker runs left.

* Kyle Trask fakes a handoff to D.J. Williams and then hits Williams in the left flat.

* Trask throws to Williams on the left side.

* Ramon Jefferson runs left, cuts right and maybe gets two yards.

* Jefferson powers his run to the left a good gain. Joe heard someone on the defense holler “OMG!,”

* Trask rolls right and hits Jefferson down the right seam.

* Trask pitches to Tucker to the right.

* Trask connects with Cephus Johnson III over the middle for a big gain.

* Jefferson runs up the middle.

* Rachaad White runs to the left for a good gain. When White finds open space he is dangerous.

* White runs to the right and finds nothing but traffic.

* There is a lot of running in today’s practice.

* White is very dangerous in the backfield when he gets outside and finds space. That happened very few times last year.

* Godwin hauls in a pass from Mayfield on the right side.

* Irving runs left then cuts up the middle.

* Bryce Hall knocks down a Mayfield pass over the middle. Hall is very pleased with himself.

* Godwin goes low to catch a slant pass coming in from the left side over the middle.

* Mayfield puts some mustard on his fastball and rifles a pass to Jalen McMillan down the left seam. Really good throw.

* Did Trask learn this pass at Florida? Trask takes two steps to the right and then jumps to get a pass to Cody Thompson on the right side.

* Some defender gets under Luke Goedeke’s skin and he is unloading (verbally) on the culprit. The Bucs go to a water break and Goedeke walks back on the field during the break to continue his verbal assault. Almost looked like he wanted to throw down. He is not a happy camper.

* Cade Otton hauls in a short and low Mayfield pass to the left side.

* Marcus Banks drops what looked like a potential pick-six from Mayfield.

* Latreal Jones catches a short Trask pass on the left side.

* Tanner Knue catches a pass from Trask on a crossing pattern from the right.

* Reason you are seeing a lot of camp meat receivers catching passes from Trask is that John Wolford is still on floppy hat patrol so the Bucs have only two arms throwing today. So Mayfield and Trask are the only active quarterbacks in practice.

* Rookie UDFA corner Chris McDonald (Toledo) gets a pick. Joe couldn’t tell who threw it as the wall of offensive players is getting very intrusive.

* Mayfield rolls right and his pass is tipped at the line.

* Mayfield throws to Kameron Johnson on a slant from the right and Johnson pulls in the low pass.

* White runs left and is stopped for a loss. The defense hoots and hollers in celebration.

* White catches a pass from the right side from Mayfield.

* UDFA defensive tackle C.J. Brewer (Coastal Carolina) flushes Trask to the right.

* Johnson catches a Trask pass over the middle.

Tomorrow morning the Bucs host the Dolphins in a joint practice. That will mark the final 2024 training camp practice.

Has RB turned into a position of depth for this team? If so, and coupled with an improved line, this offense could be top 10. And there may be some Bowles haters here but he can lead us to the promise land with a top 10 offense.

  2. Crickett Baker Says:

    Thanks

Zone blocking scheme and O-Line blocking downhill is gonna be a major change from last year. When Barton is in, the O-Line has just been different.

  4. A Bucs Fan Says:

Two biggest things I want to see Friday is how Rachaad White runs on Friday and the starting pass rush minus Yaya.

  5. Fred McNeil Says:

Sounded like a good day for the offense.
    Tomorrow should be interesting.

  6. JimBobBuc Says:

Let Wirfs sit vs the Fins.

I wonder if someone was down around Goedeke’s knees or something like that?

Sounds like fewer drops today, nothing gets under my skin more than drops!

Baker and Trask still throwing lots of low and high passes. They need to go back to footwork school and do drills morning and night.

Thank you for the notes! Read the earlier post too about Wirfs possible injury. We all think the worse scenario with everyone standing over him while he massages his ankle. Hope it’s a nothing burger. Good for Coen going all in. Looking like Trask will be the number backup for Baker again.

  8. GoneGator Says:

Getting good vibes, for what that’s worth, from Coen.

Looking forward to our work against Miami. Hoping we can tighten up in the secondary – the dolphins backs and receivers should make it interesting

  9. Dave Pear Says:

Keep The Oaf away from everyone. Goedeke was probably yelling at him.

  10. Rod Munch Says:

I’ve never heard of such a camp like this where they are practicing so little and not tackling or anything. Does Bowles know the season starts in 2 1/2 weeks? If so when does he plan on getting his team into gameday shape?

Joe, if you see this and I’m completely wrong, please let me know. This seems like an incredibly light practice schedule so far when you consider how little tackling and full practices there have been. At least that’s my impression of things.

  11. SlyPirate Says:

Read today Vita Vea dominated Xavier Delgado in 1-1.

I seriously doubt XD (329 lbs) has ever gone against someone bigger than him (345)

  12. Mike C Says:

Joe needs to get proficient in the use of stilts

    Won’t be long now! 😎

    ^^^ this!

Not really much different than last year. A day off after three days of practice is different.

  16. Scotty Mack Says:

NFL Rule per the current collective bargaining agreement: “During the period between the mandatory reporting date for veteran players and the final day of preseason training camp, no Club may hold more than a total of sixteen padded practices.”

  17. Ol' Boy Says:

Love these soft practices and see them getting even softer as the NFL moves to an 18-30 game schedule. Which means we as fans will see a quality game of football by game 5;of the NFL season. Games 1-4 will be the necessary training camp but on the fans and advertisers dime. The worthless preseason is just moved to the start of the money faucet, you see.

Last year it seems like White hardly ever bounced to the outside when the middle was clogged up. He must have learned that from Buck and Tuck

    Joe,

    Nice Tebow reference!

    That stinking ankle!

Knew he was having trouble with it & was hoping they’d minimizing the amount of running he was doing last year with run blocking

  21. My Momma Says:

Thank you, Joe! My Momma looks forward to these notes every year.

  22. garro Says:

    I want a hat like your’s Ira!

Joe I guess It’s a good thing you didn’t have to pay for those seats. Wow that is almost disrespectful Joe! Any reason given why they do that? On whose orders?

    Geez!

Thanks again for all your hard (hot) work Joe. It is much appreciated by this far away fan. Even if the Bucs brass apparently despise you press people.

    Go Bucs!

Man, I don’t remember it being this soft with so many non-tackling practices. Thanks for answering – maybe I just didn’t pay as much attention in the past.
