Bucs Training Camp 2024: Day 9 Practice Notes

August 3rd, 2024

Continues to shine.

Roasting at a Bucs training camp practice is a given. Unless it rains, you expect to feel like a hot dog on a grill. Today, it didn’t rain yet it was, well, damn near comfortable.

With the approaching tropical storm to the area, as a front naturally begins to move in, it becomes breezy. Today, as practice wore on, it became windier and windier and the last 45 minutes of practice, it was actually comfortable.

As for the Bucs, the quarterbacks were generally less than accurate, especially in the early going. A projected starting center continues to have some issues snapping the ball in shotgun formation. And a guy pretty much given up on by Bucs fans made the play of the day. This and more in Joe’s practice notes.

* The Bucs had a half-underwear football practice. They wore shoulder pads (“shells”) and of course helmets with those Great Gazoo things that look ridiculous. Whenever Joe sees players wearing those things, the first thing that pops in Joe’s head is the Great Gazoo from “The Flintstones.” Then Joe can hear Jack Woltz in “The Godfather” scream at Tom Hagen, “A man in my position cannot afford to be made to look ridiculous!”

Goal line

* Baker Mayfield’s pass just off the hands of Trey Palmer in the left near corner of the end zone. Ball was thrown a little too short.

* This would have been a coverage sack. Mayfield dodges traffic and buys time in the pocket and tries to hit Palmer in the back of the end zone but the throw is a bit wide.

* Mayfield tries for Jalen McMillan in the left far corner of the end zone but Mayfield’s throw was a bit too long and the ball was off McMillan’s hands. Joe thought Christian Izien got away with interference.

* Izien was doing a strong job of coverage all practice long.

* Yes, there were referees at practice again Saturday.

* Mayfield tries for Rakim Jarrett down the right side but Izien’s defense was too good.

* John Wolford throws to Rachaad White in the left near corner of the end zone for a score.

* Overall the Bucs defense was very stingy in the goal line drill.

11-on-11

* Mayfield tries for Chris Godwin on the left side and the pass is a bit short.

* White up the middle for about four yards. Dave Canales lives!

* Mayfield throws to Bucky Irving who is wide-ass open on the left side. Big gain.

* Irving tries running up the middle and there is too much traffic. So he bounces to the left and is able to fight for three yards.

* Trask throws to Jarrett on the left side for a decent gain.

* Sean Tucker up the middle for two.

* Trask fakes a handoff and has Devin Culp wide-ass open over the middle and throws too long for the Washington product.

* White up the middle for about 20 yards. CanalesBall.

* Play-action by Mayfield and he has Palmer down the left sideline open but the ball is overthrown.

* Another play-action and Mayfield has Cade Otton wide-ass open down the right side. The ball is a little off mark and Otton slides to secure it.

* Mayfield connects with Jarrett deep down the left side but hold up! There was a flag. Illegal procedure. Bucs beating Bucs.

* Bad Kyle!: Joe doesn’t know where Trask was throwing but one thing was clear: He didn’t see Logan Hall or thought he could throw a pass through Hall. The third-year defensive tackle dropped back two or three steps at the snap of the ball and Trask threw it right to him, though Hall had to jump a bit to secure the ball. Hall returned the pick for six.

* Trask tries to connect with Jarrett deep down the left side but cannot connect. Why? Because Izien got a hand in Jarrett’s chest and swatted the ball away.

* Mayfield throws to McMillian deep down the right side.

* Mayfield rifles a ball to White on a short pattern to the left.

* Wolford has been really struggling the past week or so to the point Joe wondered whether he will be on the roster come September. That doesn’t mean the former Wake Forest signal-caller doesn’t occasionally have his moments. Ko Kieft was in a crowd down the left sideline and Wolford threads the needle for about a 12-15 yard gain.

* Palmer looked as if he just turned the corner on a look-in pass and Mayfield hit him short and to the right.

* McMillan is Mayfield’s target over the middle and the pass was short.

* Robert Hainsey is logging some snaps with the first team currently.

* Irving tries to run up the middle and there are too many bodies. So Irving cuts right and turns the run into a nice gain.

* White catches a short Mayfield pass in the right flat. Naturally, White weaves through traffic for good production.

* White runs up the middle between Graham Barton and Ben Bredeson and there’s a huge hole that even White can read — that was a major issue Joe had with White last year was that he couldn’t (wouldn’t?) read his blockers and didn’t hit the holes that sometimes were there.

* Mayfield tries to connect with Palmer down the middle and Jamel Dean won’t have it as he knocks the ball away.

Two-minute drill

* Mayfield to Otton on the right side.

* Mayfield throws for Jarrett and Joe doesn’t know if the pass was off or Jarrett didn’t run a crisp route. Jarrett tried diving for the ball but Izien’s defense was too good not allowing Jarrett to haul the ball in.

* Mayfield saves a play as a bad snap high and to Mayfield’s left is fielded by Mayfield and he quickly threw over the middle for McMillan for a touchdown.

* Chris Godwin on a crossing pattern from the left can’t make the connections from Mayfield as the pass was short.

* This time it’s a low snap from Barton but Mayfield digs it up and still is able to throw a touchdown to Palmer on the right side.

* Perhaps the Bucs need to bring in Mike Norvell for a day to help show Barton how to long snap?

* Trask throws to Raleigh Webb to the right sideline for a couple.

* Trask throws to Sean Tucker for a short pass to the right.

* Ryan Miller and Trask connect down the left sideline.

* Trask on a play-action to David Wells down the left seam.

* D.J. Williams with a good run to the right.

* Trask bobbles a (clean) snap and still hits Cody Thompson down the right sideline. Thompson cuts inside and gains a few extra yards.

* Really pretty play: Trask throws down the left sideline and hits Latreal Jones in stride for a big gain.

* Trask goes to the well one too many times. Tries to hit Jones deep down the left sideline and the pass is too long.

Red zone

Mayfield hits White on the left side who is wide-ass open. White walks to the goal line, takes a step over the goal line, plops down on the ground and while sitting on the goal line, Palmer joins him and the two do the Jason Pierre-Paul row-your-boat routine.

* Trask tries to throw to Miller in the far left corner of the end zone but Izien is on Miller like stink on sh!t and bats the ball off course. But the ball hung up enough that Miller, as he was going out of bounds, bobbled the ball but couldn’t gain control.

* Mayfield to McMillan in the back of the end zone as McMillan ran along the back line with Tyrek Funderburk guarding.

* Mayfield would have had a coverage sack if tackling was allowed. He instead ran up the middle for a touchdown. But again, had tackling been allowed in this half-underwear football practice, it looked like Kalen DeLoach would have stopped Mayfield near the goal line.

* Trask tries to connect with Miller at the goal line but DeLoach bats it away.

That’s it for Joe’s notes. No practice on Sunday or Monday. Bucs return to practice Tuesday.

Baker was off today, especially on the deep throws. That needs to be monitored.

  2. NCBuc Says:

Not worried about Baker or Trask. Baker is the starter and Trask is the backup. I’m more worried about the feelings of Davie Pearless, who also goes by BA’s Red Limp Pen, and the Private Tim who like to claim Wolford was the #2 because he was in Corn’s corner in the past. Really scared for Private Tim that once said he knew more about football than anyone on this here site. Hope you guys are ok! I mean really, I absolutely hope you’re ok!

    Hey Joe,

Some articles like Ira’s you can read them all in sequence.

I would love if you created the same think for your training camp notes.
    Day 1, 2, etc.

It’s only a matter of time until we start seeing those Great Gazoo embarrassments in games, and have to listen toe very woke idiot on sport talk radio tell everyone how brave and wonderful they are.

You’re getting paid millions of dollars for my entertainment, and I’m not entertained by you looking like an idiot and turning the game into flag football.

Actually I am entertained by them looking like an idiot, so I retract they, pointing and laughing is always fun. But it’s the flag football part that is sickening.

  5. JimBobBuc Says:

Thanks Joe for another great write up!

    * Mayfield to McMillan in the back of the end zone as McMillan ran along the back line with Tyrek Funderburk guarding.

    ———-

I thought you made that name up, but I googled it, and sure enough there really is a Funderburk on the Bucs.

  7. Rod Munch Says:

Great notes as always Joe, well done.

  8. Alexandre Nascimento Says:

Izien is not giving up on his position…

  9. GoneGator Says:

    @NCBuc and @Rod Munch

What the hell are y’all talking about? And what does it have to do with today’s “Practice Notes”? You know, the subject/topic of the post. 🤔🙄

I’m not stoned (enough) to understand what the hell you’re even trying to say 🤣🤣🤣

  10. lambchop Says:

Up the middle for 4, Canales stlye > Up the middle for no gain, Koetter style.

  11. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Mayfield sounded horrible today. Trask sounded only slightly better.

    Not a good sign.

  12. Saskbucs Says:

Sounds like a tough day for Baker. I am not overly concerned about the ball snapping from Barton yet. Guy hasn’t played C in awhile and its basically the first week in pads still.

He seems like the type to work overtime and get that down before the season. Plenty of practice reps left to get that right.

  13. Rod Munch Says:

GoneGator – Fat, high, and stupid is no way to go through life, son.

  14. Rod Munch Says:

Baker notes just sounds like Baker, he was very inaccurate last year once you got more than about 10 yards down the field.

Also, this is a new offense. Even if it has similar origins, it’s still different and guys are still learning it. Meanwhile, you got a veteran defense that has played the same base scheme for a while. So I wouldn’t be too worried, it’s perfectly normal for defense to be ahead of offenses at this time of the year. Plus, maybe the defense is just that good, something clicked, you never know until gameday.

  15. GoneGator Says:

“GoneGator – Fat, high, and stupid is no way to go through life, son.”

Sure it is, isn’t it? It’s one way..
I can think of a lot worse ways actually – lol

Thanks again for the notes Joe

  16. Fred McNeil Says:

Iizein aint giving up without a fight.

  17. Buc king Says:

Sounds like a really bad showing for the offense

  18. heyjude Says:

Another excellent synopsis about training camp. Thank you!

Izien sounds good with coverage consistently. Mayfield and Trask had some setbacks and are still doing well. Unsure about Wolford. Was hoping the best for him. White up the middle again, again, and again. He is still going strong, really like him. Tyrek Funderburk, say that 3 times! Loving what we are hearing about him too.

  19. Marcus Nerone Says:

What’s with Rick Stroud? I’ve never seen him say one good thing about Kyle Trask. He’s over on X mocking Trask’s pick to Logan Hall. Don’t see Stroud mocking Baker’s sub-average performances this camp.

  20. ChiBuc Says:

Joe- the first thing that pops in Joe’s head is the Great Gazoo from “The Flintstones.”

My first think… Dark Helmet from Spaceballs. Maybe it’s just because of the color. Looking stupid sure beats becoming stupid (see AB)

  21. Ira's Bannana Says:

Sounds like Izien isn’t going to fold to Tykee.

  22. Joe Says:

Sounds like Izien isn’t going to fold to Tykee.

    No, sir.
