Bucs Training Camp 2024: Day 12 Practice Notes

August 8th, 2024

Continues to impress.

It appears the end of early morning practices may be finished until next summer.

The Bucs finished their fourth series of three practices in a row on Thursday. No practice tomorrow as the Bucs fly to Cincinnati for their first worthless preseason game of the year.

Yes, it’s game week.

The bleachers were still up today at One Buc Palace but there were no fans. As Joe left the practice fields, workers were preparing to take the bleachers down until next July.

Practices open to the public came to a close yesterday.

Not counting byes and the open Labor Day Weekend, the Bucs will have a game each weekend until the first weekend of January and perhaps beyond.

The next practice for the Bucs is Monday afternoon. So here are some of today’s highlights for the 12th practice of training camp.

* Baker Mayfield tries for Trey Palmer on a short pass down the right side but the pass is incomplete.

* Kyle Trask is flushed up the middle by Jose Ramirez.

* PICK! Trask tries to throw to the right side and Christian Izien came down with the ball.

* Stay away from this man Kyle: Trask tries another pass to the right testing Izien and this time he breaks up the pass. Izien is having a solid camp. He’s not playing much with the first team defense but he easily is the second-team’s best defensive back.

* Mayfield connects with Palmer down the right sideline.

* Rachaad White takes a pitch from Mayfield and runs left for a nice gain.

* Mayfield dumps off to Bucky Irving.

* Veteran free agent receiver Cody Thompson got a bunch of work today with both the second team and first team. On this play, Trask throws deep for Thompson down the left hashmark and the duo couldn’t connect. Jamel Dean provided tight defense.

* Palmer catches a Mayfield pass along the left sideline.

* Jalen McMillan gets just a little space between him and Dean on the left side and Mayfield puts the ball right in McMillan’s bread basket.

* White takes a pass from Mayfield in the left flat and houses the ball for six. White had a convoy of Cade Otton and Chris Godwin blocking for him way downfield.

* Irving takes a short pass from Mayfield

* Mayfield overthrows Thompson on the left side. Josh Hayes had tight coverage.

* Trask goes deep for Thompson down the right sideline and the pass is good as Thompson outfought Keenan Isaac for the ball.

* Trask to D.J. Williams along the right sideline.

* UDFA running back Ramon Jefferson barrels up the middle toward the left side for a nice run.

* Take your pick: With John Wolford in at quarterback, the Bucs either got a sack or it was a coverage sack with no receivers open.

* PICK! Mayfield tries to go to Cade Otton down the middle about 15-20 yards downfield but Chris Braswell had inside leverage on Otton for the pick.

* Trask hits Devin Culp at the goal line for a score. Isaac was in coverage.

* Pocket collapses on Trask and he throws it up to White who made a sensational attempt to catch the ball while skying high but the ball was just over his fingertips. The play sort of reminded Joe of the pass that Tom Brady threw for Mike Evans in a home game in 2021 against Buffalo and Brady got the ball just inches over a defensive back’s hand and Evans high-pointed the ball as if he was going up for a rebound. That pass was complete. This wasn’t.

* McMillan runs right. You read that right. Per Bucs training camp reporting protocol, Joe cannot go into any more detail about this play.

Two-minute offense

* Strong catch by McMillan along the right sideline from Mayfield. McMillan was running towards the sideline. The pass was high and outside. McMillan skied to catch the ball, was able to get two feet down for the catch as he fell out of bounds.

* Godwin hauls in a pass from Mayfield along the right sideline.

* Well, this is different: Payne Durham catches a deep ball from Mayfield down the middle. Didn’t think the big guy could stretch the field like this.

* Otton receives a pass from Mayfield short and to the right.

* Mayfield is flushed to the right and he dumps off a pass, maybe five or six yards at most to Godwin over the middle.

* Look what McMillan started: Rookie UDFA receiver Latreal Jones (Southern Miss) goes deep down the right sideline and Trask hits him as Jones gets two feet inbounds and falls out of bounds.

* Rookie UDFA receiver Tanner Knue (Eastern Michigan) catches a Trask pass on the left side.

* It’s bombs away from Trask as he aims for Thompson way down the right sideline but the ball sails over Thompson’s head.

* Ryan Miller catches a 15-yard pass from Trask on the left side. Nice pass by Trask as he threaded the needle between three defenders.

* Otton from Trask down the left sideline. The Bucs are mixing and matching a lot of guys from the first- and second-teams.

* Rakim Jarrett catches a Trask pass over the middle.

* Trask tries to connect with McMillan on a short pass to the right but the double-coverage on McMillan is too tight.

* Mayfield threads the needle for Palmer over the middle. Mayfield squeezed the ball between two defenders.

As Joe stated earlier, next Bucs practice is Monday afternoon.

    SATURDAY! SATURDAY! SATURDAY!
Even if you think it’s just a preseason meaningless game (Joe) … IDGA*: It’s Bucs football! It’s time for our young guns and UDFA to shine. It’s time to see a glimpse of Coen’s offense. It’s time to see Sean Tucker and Bucky Irving break off runs. It’s time to see all our DBs and OLB do some damage! I am so so EXCITED. Even better, it means there are only 2 more preseason games until SUNDAY! SUNDAY! SUNDAY!

    GO BUCS!

    Thanks as always Joe(s)!

    One question:

    * Strong catch by McMillan along the right sideline from Mayfield. Palmer was running towards the sideline. The pass was high and outside. Palmer skied to catch the ball, was able to get two feet down for the catch as he fell out of bounds.

Palmer, or McMillan? I believe you meant to refer to McMillan in all instances but wasn’t sure, FYI

“* McMillan runs right. You read that right. Per Bucs training camp reporting protocol, Joe cannot go into any more detail about this play.”

Guy in motion grabs the snap?

  5. Bee Says:

    Great notes as always!

Looking forward to finally seeing some Bucs football!

  6. IrishTony Says:

This may be the best camp ever including the Brady years. We’re going to be “real good” this year.

  7. BakerFan Says:

Who starts on Saturday, Trask or Wolford?

  8. Beeej Says:

Just read Russell Gage signed with Ravens, hope the guy can go a season

  9. Joe Says:

    Palmer, or McMillan?

McMillan. The nights of four-hours sleep and getting up at 5 a.m. to get to practice finally caught up with Joe.

  10. Rod Munch Says:

    Great recap as always Joe!

  11. Defense Rules Says:

Looking over the current 90-man roster (if you count Gregory, but why would you?), it’s fairly easy to pick out at least the first 45 players who’ll make the team. Leaves only about 8 spots that are questionable, and even several of those are pretty easy to guess at (yes, Funderburk will make the team IMO).

    OFFENSE
o 3 QB (Mayfield, Trask, Wolford)
    o 4 RB (White, Irving, Tucker +1)
o 6 WR (Evans, Godwin, Palmer, McMillan, Shepard +1)
o 3 TE (Otton, Durham, Culp)
o 9 OL (Wirfs, Bredeson, Barton, Mauch, Goedeke, Hainsey, Skule +2)

    DEFENSE
o 6 DL (Vea, Gaines, Kancey, Hall, Gholston +1)
    o 4 ILB (LVD, Britt, Dennis +1)
o 5 OLB (Diaby, Braswell, Nelson, JTS +1)
o 5 CB (Dean, McCollum, Hall, Thomas +1)
o 5 S (Winfield, Whitehead, Izien, Smith, Meriweather)

    SPECIAL TEAMS
    o P (Camarda)
    o K (McLaughlin)
    o LS (Triner)

We’ve got a fairly tough schedule, but if we can stay reasonably healthy, Bucs look to have a pretty good shot at repeating as NFC South champs.

Thank you for the notes, Joe. Sounding like Trask is doing well too.

    DR – Great breakdown.

    Looking good! Go Bucs!

  13. garro Says:

    Good stuff Joe!
I suspect Trask will get nearly all the snaps against at Cincy.

The mix and match stuff will continue in the game Joe?

    Go Bucs!

  14. BucU Says:

A successful training camp practice = No injuries.

  15. PSL Bob Says:

Preseason games are not worthless. They just don’t count.

  16. orlbucfan Says:

Hey Joe, I don’t do off-season football. Is Jordan Whitehead back with the Bucs?? Or are my eyes deceiving me? Did he get fed up with the Jets?

  17. Jeagan1999 Says:

orlbucfan…yes…JordanWhitehead is back home with our Bucs!

Good run down of roster Defense. Any guess on the lucky 8

I bet their are at least 30 players and 10 or more coaches who don’t think preseason is worthless!!

  21. Dave Pear Says:

Anyone named Harold is hated by his parents.

Then to come on a site where you get to choose a name and chooses that….

  22. Mike Alstott Jr. Says:

    what happened to wolford?

  23. Crickett Baker Says:

DR left Klein out unless I misread.

  24. D-Rok Says:

So our rookie defensive end recorded 2 picks recently??? DE’s getting a pick has to be extremely rare, correct?

DR left Klein out unless I misread.

I do not think Klein is a given. 40 percent make the team, 50 percent practice squad. 10 percent somewhere else.

  26. orlbucfan Says:

Thanks you all. I checked the roster. Man, something bad must have happened between Whitehead and the Jets. They paid him some serious $$$ to get him away from Tampa. He’s always been one of my faves.
