Bucs Make O-Line Change, Claim Packers Guard/Tackle

August 28th, 2024

A late-fourth-round pick of the Green Bay Packers in 2021 is now a Tampa Bay Buccaneer.

And just like that longtime Bucs backup tackle Brandon Walton, the pride of Seminole High School, was booted from the 53-man roster after making Tampa Bay’s 53-man roster on Tuesday.

Today the Bucs were awarded Royce Newman after claiming him on waivers. The Packers launched him earlier this week.

Newman has experience in 51 career games with 24 starts. Most of his time on the field was at right guard, but he’s also played tackle and right guard. In college, he was a four-year player for Ole Miss.

The stats crowd will tell you Newman is a strong pass blocker and stinks against the run. The Packers’ front office would say he’s just not good enough for them.

Joe likes the pickup. If Buccaneers Ring of Honor general manager Jason Licht saw enough from Newman in the preseason to give him a job, that’s good enough for Joe.

Newman has not missed a game in his NFL career.

Jason Licht knows oline guys…I’m good with it.

  2. Buc4evr Says:

Sorry for Walton, hope he can get on the practice squad or another team.

Now, how about an edge rusher Jason?

  3. matthew a veal Says:

we have more invested in baker, evans and godwin, sounds like pass protection would be priority if over guys that cant do both

  4. Capt.Tim Says:

When your starting guards are Ben Bredeson and Cody Mauch, you better do something.
Hes Better than Hainsey. Hes probably better than Bredeson and Mauch.
He aint great, but he will probably be a starter by Mid season.
To have such fantastic tackles, and a fantastic talent at Center, its still so strange that all of our Guards are backups at best. Frankly, they are lousy. Giants dumped Bredeson. Packers dumped Newmen. Not traded. Just dumped. Hit the bricks.
Not even good enough to be a backup- despite both having starting experience.

Its almost INTENTIONALLY sabotaging the running game.
Worst in the NFL two years in a row isnt sucky enough?

  5. Scott Says:

The run game will be fine this year.

  6. Fernando Says:

    Reallly Capt Tim?
I can tell you are well versed on Oline play
    NOT!!!!

  7. HC Grover Says:

    Sounds ok

  8. Beeej Says:

Mauch will kill it this year, can’t speak to Bredeson

  9. Saskbucs Says:

Seems like a good move. Packers like the Eagles have had stout OLs for seemingly forever. Walton clearly didn’t have a great camp or he would still be here. Sounds like this Newman character checks the versatile box the Bucs are always going for. Much more starting experience than our other back ups not named Hainsey. OL is gonna be a strength this year.

  10. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

Capt Tim – take a breath Bro – the O line is much improved and the scheme will open holes. Bucky will do well.

  11. Bucswin! Says:

I noticed Walton struggling in preseason, surprised he made original 53. Is it Sept 8th yet? Go BUCS!

  12. SenileSenior Says:

In Licht I trust when it comes to the OL.

    Go Bucs!!

  13. SlyPirate Says:

Versatile depth. Lots of experience. Seems like a good move.

  14. infomeplease Says:

Walton was flagged for way too many false starts during pre season. This was not his year.

  15. infomeplease Says:

I see the Bucs signed to the practice squad just about every pre season stand out!! That’s bodes well for team depth.

  16. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

Walton played himself off the team unfortunately.

  17. Capt.Tim Says:

    74 Buc fan,
Yeah, once the season starts, Im done talking about personel moves.
By then, you got what you got
Our tackles are incredible. Our Center will be great.
Somehow, we got worse at guard, than the nightmare we had last year.

We’ll see how our running game does. We would be such a good offense if we had the threat of a running game.

Crossing my fingers. Yeah. Im done. Nobody believed it last year either.
    Until we starting losing games.
One more week buddy. Go Bucs

  18. Beeej Says:

Joe needs to start a pool on the Bucs average yards per rush for the season, work out some sort of prize for the winner(s)

  19. Conner50 Says:

I like the pickup, he’s gotta be better than Walton if we jumped on him like we did. Hopefully our guards do well this year, not sold on Bredeson. He was dumped by the giants for lousy play, he looks like a liability as a starter. Too bad we lost Opeta, he probably would have been a really good starter but we won’t know now. Makes you wish we stilll had Marpet, too bad he retired early

  20. Buc4evr Says:

It was only preseason but I thought Bredeson played really well and opened up some holes. Will reserve judgement until I see how he does in the new scheme against Washington. Same for Mauch.

  21. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Really, how can you not trust Licht on an online pickup?

  22. Obvious Says:

For me it’s not the ability to pick great o line guys. No, not at all. Where Licht seems to SUCK is at figuring out that we ACTUALLY NEED PEOPLE IN CERTAIN PLACES AND ESPECIALLY “WHEN” TO PICK THEM UP!

For instance the reason why Tom Brady said GOOD BYE….. Jason Licht SCREWED THAT O LINE SITUATION BIG TIME! He didn’t bring in even one proven o lineman that year! Where was that genius then??? NO WHERE! No help and it almost seemed as if he was TRYING to get Brady hurt! He could have easily brought in SOMEBODY but he figured everything was just fine after losing 3 major pieces of that line at the same time!

Two words and I made Strong comments at the time….. POOR FORM! And here’s two more….. NOT COOL!

I still believe he’s the best GM we’ve ever ever had but he’s NOT walking on water….
Love the guy but he HAS made some bone headed decisions. Sorry but THAT’S on him! And what about this year with NO PASS RUSH ESTABLISHED but just like the last year before Brady RAN AWAY no action from the GM when it CLEARLY would be a GREAT IDEA to have a veteran presence OTHER THAN our vet Joe Try Again. And we have A LOT of money to work with. I guess we’re saving the money for the after we lose the play off’s party…

    Just saying….

  23. Beeej Says:

There was NO money, much less any linemen worth spending it in. That guy Tretter(?) Never played another down in the NFL

  24. Leopold Stotch Says:

Oh no, I just heard about this guy on local radio. They were very happy he got cut. He’s like Donovan Smith. Lots of penalties

  25. Bucs Bucs Bucs! Says:

Capt. Tim- O totally disagree with you. The O-Line is much improved. Better Center, Mauch has a year of experience and growth after being thrown into the fire, and Bredeson looks far better than expected. Liam Coen’s scheme is light years better than Canales’s. Our O Line is going to be excellent.
You’re being unnecessarily critical. Go Bucs!

  26. Bucs Bucs Bucs! Says:

Obvious- Are you aware that the Bucs salary cap situation was the WORST in the NFL by far last year? Licht couldn’t get premier players because we simply didn’t have the money. To get into the playoffs was a testament to our staff and coaching. SMH.

  27. Pewter Power Says:

From what I hear Brandon Walton got abused all summer sooo I’m surprised he made the 53. The new guy has starter experience so good pickup

  28. Usfbuc Says:

The o line will be better this year. I would have liked for the Bucs to signed the younger G/C who played in Miami last year but I can see why we would also pass too. Other than that what other o linemen have just been laying around for him to go sign?

  29. Cobraboy Says:

    Radio Morris

  30. Gipper Says:

Mauch has looked good in preseason this year. Really like the way he is getting downfield in the run game and looking for secondary blocks. Expect he will be much improved this year with more upper body strength.

  31. Capt.Tim Says:

Everyone thought I was being critical 2 years ago.
Then Fornette repeately got dropped behind the line.
    Last in Rushing

Must be former ProBowler Fournettes fault. He forgot how torun
    We cut him

Everyone thought I was too critical last year.
Until White got dropped behind the line over and over.
    Last in Rushing
    Kid cant see a hole.
    We draft A New RB.

    Everyone thinks Im being to critical . . . . . .

  32. Rod Munch Says:

Imagine wanting to throw the football in 2024 instead of running up the middle — what a stupid idea that would be.

  33. BoricuaBucFan Says:

I’m sure he is an upgrade over Walton and Skule

  34. Ed McSherry Says:

Go to YouTube. Pat McAfee show:
“Bill Belichick’s Brutally honest assessment of the kick-off.”

23 minutes in Belichick talks about O-lines, and especially the importance of the Center. Really good comments the O-line in general though.

  35. Stanglassman Says:

“Most of his time on the field was at right guard, but he’s also played tackle and right guard.“
Was this supposed to say left guard or has he only played RG twice?

“The stats crowd will tell you Newman is a strong pass blocker and stinks against the run.“

Would they? Or would they say he struggles to Run Block. Maybe he plays some DL too?

  36. heyjude Says:

Let’s see what Royce does on the Bucs. Maybe he wasn’t a good fit with the Packers. You never know. We have had players that didn’t do well here and then went somewhere else and looked like a superstar.

  37. RustyRhinos Says:

“Joe needs to start a pool on the Bucs average yards per rush for the season, work out some sort of prize for the winner(s)”

This long-time JBF wonders why the Joe’s and Ira don’t have a merch page…

A JBF T-shirt with the Logo at the top Left of the Title bar, and “if you can’t find me I am at JoeBucsFan.com” on the back, A coffee cup, A beer glass, A shot glass set, A cooler, A Yeti type drinking cup, A beer coozy… Many, Many Idea$ over here Joe’s & Ira…

It is a good problem to have “more experienced O-linemen”.

Hey CaptTim, You longing for the days of Gilkey, and Cousins, Maybe another few games of multiple holding calls on Youngblood? I like our O-Line as it sits currently. We do have a solid young O-Line, that should only get better. There are several good to great O-linemen on our starting 5, some even rookies. Yeah we could have done this or that, and we could have done that or this, yet the GM did not. Do you have your NFL, USFL, Arena League, NCAA, GM paid position yet to go with your Captain Bars?

    GO!!!!!BUCS!!!!!
Not sure why you are so down on our O-line…

    Hello NEWMAN 👋🏼

  39. garro Says:

    Wait… Newman plays Tackle too?

    Cool

I was thinking he only played Guard and that we could be in trouble at Tackle.

    Go Bucs!

    *Newman*

  41. Bucfan1988 Says:

Yeah, Brandon Walton played like total a$$ in preseason.
Whether he was being called for a penalty or letting dudes blow right past him.

I kept making comments watching the games this summer on how bad he looked.

It was as if he forgot his technique entirely.

Glad to see Bucs cut this guy.
Hopefully Newman will be a step up for us.
