Bucs Dodge Crisis?

August 20th, 2024

Gave Bucs a scare.

So early in Bucs practice the team has individual drills and then team drills and walk-throughs. Nothing serious. Little to no hitting.

So as the Bucs were going through an offensive team drill, Joe noticed Tristan Wirfs was on the ground. He was sitting up, but was sitting for some time. Weird.

This happened maybe two or three minutes after the portion of practice when video and still photography was closed to media. So Joe wasn’t able to get any documentation of it.

Joe broke out his binoculars and noticed Wirfs and a trainer were working on his left ankle briefly. The trainer also had a second pair of shoes with him. Then Joe noticed the trainer was taping up the left shoe.

Four Bucs staffers surrounded Wirfs, including assistant general manager John Spytek.

Then Joe saw Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht walk over to monitor what was going on. That’s a helluva lot of VIP team people gathered around a player on the ground who is only changing shoes.

Joe didn’t notice Wirfs limping. Shortly after he got up, he was back practicing.

It easily could be nothing. But Joe couldn’t help but remember former Bucs guard and current popular sports radio personality Ian Beckles said his experience once you get a sprained ankle playing offensive line, the injury lingers and really doesn’t go away. It’s also easier to get another sprain, Beckles noted.

He also predicted Wirfs, who also has had issues with sprained ankles, will be dealing with this the rest of his career.

(Joe last year relayed Beckles’ words to Wirfs about ankle injuries and Wirfs didn’t disagree.)

So could Wirfs have simply had a rock in his shoe? Yeah, but the five Bucs staffers including the top two personnel men in the organization hovering over Wirfs sure didn’t look good.

Football is definitely a next man up kind of sport, I hope we have been preparing for that eventuality all around.

ankle sprains stretch the tendons and we know he tore tendons in one of his ankles a couple seasons ago… do we know if he had them repaired? If not his ankle is less stable than before and will roll more easily. Similar situation for the other ankle that had a serious high ankle sprain. Do we know if he’s had tight rope procedures done?

    YOU WANT A CRISIS?
CK is a crisis. I heard he destroyed the OL in 1-1s today. He got around preseason darling Klien without being touched! He later got around Mauch even with a hold.

Keep Logan the Oaf far away from everyone. Good golly.

That’s the problem with investing all your cap on just a few players.

As a former high school and collegiate soccer player who both sprained his ankles several times and broke my foot in 4 places, I concur. Doesn’t matter which sport (apart from maybe golf), once those tendons get stretched they need constant attention before each practice and game. I’m not surprised at all that Wirfs got all that attention even if he just broke a cleat.

A scare would be for Dean Tryon & Logan to be waking up every morning & wondering if they’re gonna end up getting replaced.

@zzbucs – You forgot about his appetite , too ! I remember Ian and Steve , the big dog, and all they talked about was food.

This is the last preseason game…playsafe…no heroics rendering
you out of the season…as far as YaYa…next man up, don’t put
your eggs in that basket, next man up for him, no such thing as
the next up isn’t capable…you’re sent in “tackle ” your sent in “catch”
…no one is irreplaceable…backups should be ultimately as good as
    starters…are you not observing?

What about Wolford? Is he OK? He got injured last preseason too in the Jets game. Maybe his size is a factor in his injuries?

  12. Bojim Says:

Yeah I had two of them. First one really bad. Second one came easy cuz I tripped on a sprinkler head. What? Took me months to get right. Couldn’t have really recovered if I played a contact sport. I played baseball so it wasn’t that much of a hindrance. But football? Basketball?]
