Bucky Irving And Sean Tucker Find Success

August 10th, 2024

Rookie running back Bucky Irving.

So the preseason opener arrived tonight and something came long with it: a Buccaaneers rushing attack.

How sweet it is/was.

Many Buccaneers fans got their first taste of rookie Bucky Irving and saw the quick feet Joe’s been watching in training camp, especially on the turf of the Bengals’ stadium. He hits the hole more quickly than Bucs fans are used to seeing and he’s got juice and shiftiness, and fights and falls forward.

Irving finished with 6 carries for 28 yards with a 5-yard touchdown run (video below). And how about rookie Graham Barton helping blow up the hole for Irving and finishing the play!

Up next was Sean Tucker. The second-year running back out of Syracuse rode the bench last season and struggled when he played. But tonight he carried his solid 2024 training camp into a real game under the lights.

As Rachaad White had the night off, Tucker led the way with 10 carries for 68 yards including a 26-yard scamper.

The duo of Tucker and Irving combined to average 5.3 yards per carry in the first half.

Joe has to go back and watch the replay, but this was damn encouraging. Joe almost forgot what a dominant rushing performance felt like. It’s been a while  since Ronald Jones averaged 5.0 yards per carry during the 2020 season.

It actually looks like they schemed up a running game from a blocking perspective, way different from last year.

    Bucky Irving > Rashad White

There is hope in Tampa for a run game!!! 😎

    We got this!
    LFG!!!!

  5. Rod Munch Says:

Bucs win a SB throwing the ball, lead the league in passing, one of the most fun offenses in the game — and people are celebrating running it up the middle like it’s 1970.

No thanks, I’ll take a modern pass-first offense any day of the week.

  6. J Says:

Our rushing attack looked like it made sense for once. Really enjoyable to watch.

  7. BucVoyager Says:

Coen looks like a massive upgrade.

  8. Mike Says:

Rod munch you truly are a very special and complicated man lol we had Tom brady as qb when you have that man as your qb you don’t need no damn running game lol

  9. BigMacAttack Says:

I think they all played well especially the RB’s and O line to start game

  10. Tbbucs3 Says:

Impressive showing by Coen, doesnt look like it’s gonna be a learning on the job for the first 8 weeks like it was with Canales….but never know till real football starts.

Give the Winston Bucs a defense for more than half a season, and a kicker who doesn’t lose multiple games, and that team would have also been in the playoffs. Cause here’s the golden rule of football … you win by scoring more points than the other team, and the easiest way to score since about 1981 has been throwing the football.

  12. Tbbucs3 Says:

Rod prefers his 30 interceptions over a 28-10 ratio.

  13. Mveal2006 Says:

If we have an nfl average running game this year, then our draft/coaching change/ was a success.

    Small sample prize

  14. Zoocomics Says:

Nice to see Tucker perform well. Really shouldn’t come at a great shock given the school he played at and the numbers he put up there. The kid was projected 3rd/4th Round last season before the heart issue was flagged. Overall, this team will be better thanks to Coen calling plays.

  15. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

    Very pleased overall!

Rod – you’re better than that man. Balance – it’s about balance.

  16. Oz Len Says:

Couldn’t watch the game up here in Ohio but looking at the box score looks like Wolford out played Trask.

  17. infomeplease Says:

Rod, yes you win thru the air! But if that’s all you got , defensive coordinators kill you. You need to have an effective run game too. This slows down the pass rush and it keeps the other teams offense off the field. You don’t need a fifty-fifty balance, you just need to run well enough to keep the other team guessing. That makes the pass game more effective too.

  18. Pink Says:

    @Rod
Didn’t you watch the 2022 season? Even if you have Tom Brady you cannot win if you’re asking him to throw the ball 50+ times every game!

  19. Tbbucs3 Says:

Excellent point Pink, the Bucs in 2022 lead the league in pass attempts by a mile and the offense was bottom 5.

  20. Idroolpewter&red Says:

As impressed as I was with the run game I was even more impressed by the depth at a variety of positions on defense. It’s only 1 preseason game, but I’m really feeling better about predicting 10+ wins. I’m thinking floor of 9 wins, ceiling of 12 wins at this point.

  21. Matt_PcAfee Says:

Remember the winless Lions had a preseason record of 4-0. Hold your horses

  22. adam from ny Says:

anybody have an idea of how to stream a replay of this preseason game ???

  23. MadMax Says:

    My man Bucky knows how!!!!!!!

  24. lambchop Says:

I really don’t like the fact that we rested starters with a new OC. Most other teams are playing their starters that aren’t already injured. A player can get hurt at any given point. At least give the starters a series to get acclimated to the new playbook.

  25. Beeejt5 Says:

Bucs had the ball 36.5 minutes, I’ll take that

  26. Dude Says:

It’s not about the win, it’s about evaluating the players. Can’t even really gleam too much from these games schematically as the personnel and capability of the overall talent changes with the starters. This is base X & O football, no team is show the concept beaters they have in the preseason everything is pretty much learning level stuff league-wide.

Saw a Bucs reporter tweet “excellent play calling by Coen” like what? And that’s how I know digital brown-nosing is a thing lol somebody wants another interview. Keep your dignity Joe

  27. Saskbucs Says:

Real encouraging night. Barton and Brederson look like they can get some push. Let’s see what White can do behind this new unit before we anoint Irving the guy. Loved some playcalling that I saw tonight. The play action, the crossing routes … OL opening some holes. Not going to over react to the first preseason game but some very nice signs. Stay healthy stay humble … go Bucs.

  28. Bobby Says:

Lets see Tucker with 10 plus touches and a 1st team Offensive Line in front of him. After tonight, if Tucker does not make the 53 squad. I think another team will pick him up quickly and we may see that guy blowing up for 130plus rudh yards this season. Be careful Jason Licht when considering Sean Tucker. I think He is potentially a future solid RB. This franchise does not need another Legarrette Blount mistake or Steve Young or etc… be careful Bucs management.

  29. Booger Says:

Not a fan of running the ball on 3rd and long to setup a 51yd FG that we missed… IF, you’re going to do THAT, then it should’ve already been predetermined that you’re going for it on 4th. THROW THE BALL. It’s just waaaayy too conservative. And, the ‘play-calling’ (calling a run play, then BURNING 30-seconds off the clock) after the 2:00 Minute Warning DOWN 14-10, was inexcusable. Mind. Blowing. THEN, wasting one of your THREE (much needed to at least give yourself a chance, typically) remaining ‘time-outs’ on top of it… Makes absolutely NO sense, whatsoever… ZERO. They just happened to get very lucky to get ‘bailed-out’ with that PI call. Gotta do better than that, during the ‘real’ season… MUCH Better. Also, I do not want to see 30+ Run Plays per game either, UNLESS we’re just gashin’ ‘em (&/or) it’s in the 4th Quarter with a big lead against a tired defense. That is all.

  30. Booger Says:

If that’s the case, then we’ll be in LOTS of these 17-14 ugly-looking nailbiters week in and week out, just like last year. SURELY, it’ll look a lot different with Mike, Chris, White, & JMac in there, tho… We’ll see. Burrow didn’t have any trouble at all, & it was the same deal as last season… Couldn’t get off the field on 3rd Down. If not for such a plss poor effort on that would be tackle on the Higgins’ score, they would’ve had the ball for 7:00+ on their opening drive.

  31. heyjude Says:

So impressed last night with the Bucs. Got to say, Go Bucky Go!

Thank you Joe for bringing us all the rookie information for months. It was great to know a lot of what to expect and it didn’t disappoint! Great game!

  32. Oneilbuc Says:

Tbbuc3. So Jamies was the only quarterback that should have won without a running game lol 😆😆? Man this is what I be talking about you guys pick and choose who you give excuses to. So let me get this straight it was because of the running game why Brady and Baker struggled because they had to throw over 40 times a game. But it was Jamies fault because Dirk Kooter and BA had him throwing over 40 times a game? Ok man you can’t make this stuff up!!

  33. Swashbuckler Says:

Seeing Sean Tucker hit that big run with the 3rd string offensive line was definitely encouraging. I think he has more juice than Irving rushing wise. I’d like to see him with 10-15 carries and few screens schemed up. He seems like he just needs reps and to get into a rhythm
Rachaad White is good in the passing game, but his rushing efficiency is dog water. Tucker could be an all-around weapon if they helped him develop his pass blocking, and scheme him up better. Would really like to see him get a shot considering his college resume and work ethic. Kid is a little beast. He reminds me of Doug Martin, but with speed.

  34. Dave Pear Says:

Otard once again proving that an eggplant has more awareness.

  35. bucsince79 aka bumaneer Says:

The whole team seemed to be dialed in… No one really tanked or looked sloppy… Kudos to OC Liam… Bucs looked good Off Def & Special Teams…

  36. Buckeyebuckchuck Says:

Good to see the Rod Muncher came out of hibernation. He sort of disappeared during the playoffs. Leaving the fungus-ridden cellar of Munchdom, this team is sneaky good. Coen is much better than Canales. Mayfield will not regress, last year was basically what he was before getting injured with CLE and struggling with CAR ( the norm for the Pathetic Panthers). ME and CG are still the main WRs, the OLine got upgraded, and the D won’t fall apart. This team can go toe to toe with anybody in the NFL

  37. Oneilbuc Says:

Buckey. So is it NFC Championship or bust then since you have have so much confidence in Baker and the team ??

  38. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

Clearly Irving has exceptional vision. As a smaller running back running up the middle, in the nfl that’s a huge plus. Something about Darwin’s theory on evolution….Hopefully, the coaches recognize that Buckys periphery is really good, and it looks like he can take a hit too. Lions and tigers and bears oh my!

To be determined at a later pre-season game. This is why they have preseason games. To find them thar gems.

  39. BigBucsFan Says:

I thought we looked a lot more neopolitan ratherthan that vanilla offense we ran last year. I agree it’s like we have somebody who’s graduated with high degrees versus a student of the game. Can’t wait to see the starting group with Baker,Rashad White and the rest of the running back group run together on this.

  40. BigBucsFan Says:

I would go as far as put a guarantee that Rashad white would have had a better season last year Sean Tucker would have actually had a season last year if it wasn’t for the inexperience learning on the job stubborn running it straight up the middle like it’s 1970 type football the running game could still be prevalent in today’s NFL and is basically a must to help have a good pass game. But you got to be smart clever savvy about it. My opinion we looked a lot more like a real NFL offense last night in the first preseason game with practically none of our starters in that was our rookies in our position battle guys

  41. Donald G Says:

Mr. Munch To win a game one must try to even the amount of runs and pass. This is football 101.How old are you exactly? Just sayin You must be mid 20s
