Bill Belichick Puts Bucs Among Teams With A Distinct Advantage

August 27th, 2024

So Bill Belicheat, the free agent head coaching legend, joined the media ranks after the Patriots ousted him and Joe has been entertained ever since.

Belicheat live at the NFL Draft on The Pat McAfee Show was tremendous learning and fun.

There’s no hot-take side to Belicheat, it seems, but there’s no BS, either.

Belicheat was back on the air with McAfee this week talking about the sham that is preseason football. He very much detailed how a quarterback cannot be properly evaluated in preseason games and that practice is a much better gauge.

The greatest NFL head coach in history also explained that veteran defensive teams with continuity on the defensive coaching staff have a big advantage early in the season. He says they can do so much more to confuse offenses in the first month of a season than a defense that’s not only tackling for the first time all summer but is figuring out a new system and the critical real-time communication that accompanies with it.

Belicheat used the Saints as an example, citing their veteran players and what a great job head coach Dennis Allen does with the defense he’s coached for nine full seasons.

Belicheat noted those established defenses can play faster, and he pointed to the Ravens losing their defensive coordinator to Seattle as very significant.

That triggered Joe’s mind from a betting perspective, especially as the slimy Saints host the Panthers and 2023 deer-in-the-headlights quarterback Bryce Young on opening day.

But more important, it got Joe thinking about Todd Bowles entering his sixth year coaching up the Bucs defense. And Bowles is likely to have just one rookie playing a ton on defense early in the season, nickel cornerback/safety Tykee Smith.

Man, talk about no excuses for opening day. The Bucs should be better than overhauled Washington in so many ways.

With all the recent success the past few years if the Bucs pull a Tennessee-ready game like they did with Marcus Mariota during his first game my fandom may break.

I have CJ stroud’s Texans game in my head too since that was Todd’s defense.

  2. AL121976 Says:

That “Tennessee ready” is such a bad memory

  3. SlyPirate Says:

    EXACTLY WHY ATL STRUGGLES
The coaching staff new to the team AND new to coaching. The OC and DC have only been assistant coaches at the pro level. BIG learning curve.

I see the NFCS finishing 1) Tampa, 2) NO, 3) ATL, 4) CAR

  4. Bucngator Says:

I watched Belichick on McAfee yesterday and he was fantastic. He truly tells it like it is and his insights are tremendous. I just kept thinking about how I could listen to him talk about football for hours.

  5. CallTheSaltTruck Says:

@SlyPirate- Yup. The Eagles are gonna struggle early for the exact same reason, IMO. Hopefully that translates to an advantage when we play the Eagles and Falcons weeks 4 and 5.

  6. Bee Says:

Tennessee ready. Lol…I remember being so hyped then the game was over by the 2nd quarter.

  7. rrsrq Says:

I hope this team is Washington ready, that is a new team with a new coach and a QB who can beat you with his feet. I’m not ready to bet the farm on game 1, unless Vita spends time in the QB’s face and JTS can tackle

  8. Dave Pear Says:

Belichick – the next Bucs head coach after Todd’s defense gives up the most yards passing in the league.

  9. PSL Bob Says:

If the Bucs start out strong against the Commandos like they did in the final preseason game, this could get out of hand quickly. In a good way!

  10. Fan of the South Says:

Bucs better be some kind of ready come week 1.
Commanders are going to be competitive in 2024. Dan Quinn will certainly have his Defense ready. Kliff Kingsbury who hand a hand in the developing of Case Keenum, Johnny Manziel, Baker Mayfield, Patrick Mahomes, Kyler Murray, and Caleb Williams will have the Offense and his Rookie QB ready too. KK’s arly College Career can boast an average 50 Points a game and 600 yards of Offense. Had he not jumped straight from college to a head coaching Gig he would have been a great OC and this year he will prove it.

When Austin Ekeler is RB2 then you can expect a good dose of the Run game and a huge risk of some injuries to the Front 7 and Corners due to not have been doing much real tackling.

Game 1 is going to be far from an Easy A and if an L goes up on the Bucs side the Bronco’s will be smelling blood in the water on week 3.

I remember both those games only two well. It wasn’t the offense that let us down in those games but the prevent yourself from winning defenses that were used on the final drives. You can throw the Redskins game in there as well when Kurt “You like that” Cousin shreded us to pieces on his final drive.

  12. orlbucfan Says:

Hey Pear, go shove it regarding Belicheat coaching here. What’s your problem: water on the brain? Belicheat has been focused on the Bucs since Dungy days when he took videos of Dungy’s team, especially the defense, during preseason (god forbid, joes). Belicheat got caught doing it, too. Where do you think his nickname came from? Bucs will be ready for DC. Go Bucs!

  13. stpetebucfan Says:

Dave Pear I enjoy your posts but I’m with orlbucfan on this one.

I’m literally stunned that Belichek has made such a splash in broadcasting given his total lack of personality.

Bottom line for me however is that without Brady Belicheat was a LOSING coach.
He has a horrid record without Brady. He’s old and over the hill.

Hiring Belicheat to coach the Bucs would be the ONE move I can think of that would make me desert the Bucs.

Sometimes I feel lucky I was born in 1980 and only knew we sucked and sucked and sucked some more. Because every win is glorious and I know I’m a true fan because we literally couldn’t have sucked more growing up. Well thanks Rod for 0-16. So I’ll be here next season and next season no matter what happens. So when I see people say they.might not root for the Bucs anymore if A.B. or C. Happens I just shake my head and remember all the commercials and jokes and jokes and jokes that were made at our expense and give a fu** yeah we ain’t the Jets.

  15. unbelievable Says:

Who are our starting OLBs on opening day if YaYa is out?

And even if he’s back, who is starting opposite from him?

    That’s my concern.

I remember a movie where this kid was playing an old handheld football game and told his opponent “hey what are you doing ? You don’t kick on first down . Even Tampa Bay doesn’t do that “.
I think the movie was called warlock or something like that.
