After Graham Barton Worry, It Was Robert Hainsey With A Bad Snap
August 12th, 2024So much was made of rookie center Graham Barton’s snapping troubles in practice over the past couple of weeks.
In Saturday’s glorious preseason opener — Bucs tackle football returned! — Barton was smooth at center and it was returning starter Robert Hainsey who botched a snap low and left to Kyle Trask early in the second quarter.
The 2nd-and-10 flub in shotgun formation was controlled by quarterback Kyle Trask after it hit the ground. Trask juked a defender and cut back inside to keep it to a two-yard loss.
A play later, Trask threw his ugly interception of the night. Joe gives the assist to Hainsey. Not only did he set up the miserable down-and-distance situation. Trask might have been a tiny bit rattled from taking a hit.
Bucs coaches and officials talk about players thriving when the lights come on and how preseason games are a little more important than practice.
On this night, Joe is confident, Barton 100 percent locked down the starting center job.

Look at those stick legs they get zero push on the line

A worthless game that is glorious.
OK. Why not. Todd has stated multiple value points for these games, “this Joe” calls it “glorious” and watched and rewatched at least once.
“Other Joe” keeps using 2020 as proof of worthlessness. The fact that fans have to pay full price for these games is the issue. The NFL deep state is set up almost like a monopoly, so I get the beef with the NFL over these games.
Other Joe finds them worthless, but the NFL, coaches, players, and fans see value in them.
Different horses for different courses.
Meanwhile, Hainsey provides versatile depth. As a starter, he sucks, unless he blows snaps. Then he just blows.

While Robert Hainsey has yet to prove he is a reliable center, I think he’ll be fine as a descent backup .

Depth is so critical to winning in the NFL. Guys get hurt. You need reliable backups to keep you competitive. I’m happy to have Hainsey, a 2 year starter, coming off the bench.

There’s never been a question in my mind Barton would be our starting center day one, after he was drafted day one. We replaced Igor, with Frankenstein. Barton is a monster in the middle.

If Barton performs as expected Hainsey will always be the back up center until he leaves or another developmental center is drafted. He will not play any other position on the line because the Bucs try to guard against injury by dedicating someone as the back up each season.

Hainsey is a nice guy. Too light in the azz though. Barton is clearly an improvement.
August 12th, 2024 at 11:45 am
Yes, I’m going to lose countless nights of sleep because Hainsey, who I don’t remember having trouble with snaps during the entire last season, had one bad one in a preseason game. Give me a break.
August 12th, 2024 at 11:46 am
Dave, Joe doesn’t like preseason…. and that is ok.
August 12th, 2024 at 11:47 am
If Trask gets that rattled from a bad snap that he throws an INT, he doesn’t belong in the NFL, which is my thought anyway.

After re-watching the pre-season game and looking at Baldinger’s analysis (thanks, Joe(s)!), I agree that Barton has locked down the Center position, even at this early stage. Barton has good fundamentals, which will only improve with time and experience. Barton also looks more like a natural Center. He gets into his stance by bending more at the knees, whereas Hainsey tends to bends more at the waist. On shotgun formations, Barton snaps the ball quickly in a straight line into the QB’s hands and does a great job in getting into position to block his man. Trask looked a little surprised to get the ball that quickly. I’m rooting for Barton, and I look forward to seeing the Bucs this week at the open practices in Jacksonville and the game! Go Bucs!

In all fairness it was JBF that stated many times that Hainsey at center was not a problem.
Joe didn’t think Carlton Davis was a “problem,” either. Always room for teams to try and upgrade. That’s why there’s an offseason. –Joe
While many fans and even one credible national source (prickly Pete Prisco, I think it was) was saying otherwise. Barton did look good on Saturday night and barring any meltdowns is destined to be the opening day starter.

Hainsey was the anchor of the “Matador 3” last season and was a huge problem.
Better he is depth on the bench.

Maybe this is the other Joe describing the preseason game as glorious.
The Joes need to do an article describing the differences between the Joes.
You can tell somewhat from the Ira podcasts…..there is a reasonable Joe…and then, there is the other one.
(and, if the shoe fits)

I thought that was Hainsey. #70 was definitely on the field. Still, stuff happens. No big deal this early.
August 12th, 2024 at 12:41 pm
No offense meant, but I don’t really care if one of the Joe’s really hates preseason or not as long as they cover the games well. For me, I enjoy the BUCS preseason so I can see what the rookies and scrubs can do. It’s kind of relaxing not to have to fret about the score for a change.

The O sputtered with Hainsey at Center.
August 12th, 2024 at 1:10 pm
The Bucs still have four scrimmages and two preseason games to finalize the OL. Sure, Barton is very likely the starter, but he didn’t play against any starters. I’ll be listening to Joe tell us about the JAX scrimmage results against the Jags 1st team DL. When will the starter be named and get the vast majority of snaps? I’m betting it will be right after the JAX scrimmages and game.

Dave,
All I can say is…
“OLE!!”
August 12th, 2024 at 2:31 pm
Offense was significantly worse with Hainsey at Center. I saw the Trask snap and was like woah wtf? Saw it was Hainsey and was like oh. Barton came back next series and it was much smoother.
August 12th, 2024 at 2:43 pm
@Joe
Not sure what you mean by “Joe didn’t think Carlton Davis was a “problem,” either”
CDlll has been a big time problem his last 2 years as a Buc, is just a matter of watching the tape.
Trading him for 3 erd rounder was one of the several accomplishment by our GM…. Just Brilliant
August 12th, 2024 at 2:53 pm
Barton didn’t play against starters but Hainsey was not great against backups. I’ve seen all I need to.
August 12th, 2024 at 3:28 pm
KABucs – LOL! Much more fun to watch maulers in action than cape wielders.
August 12th, 2024 at 3:44 pm
Barton looks like a beast already lol just eating people up out there

I’ll second that, Dave-
OLE!!

That last touchdown was just pure brute strength and will . If the Bucs average 130-140 rushing ypg lookout. The offense could be downright dangerous .
