Unfinished Strength Evaluation For Cody Mauch

July 28th, 2024

Right guard Cody Mauch.

So it’s well known that right guard Cody Mauch added about 15 pounds this offseason.

Mauch has described it as an organic effort: more plates on the bars and extra protein shakes here and there. Nothing fancy. No consult with Tom Brady.

So how does it feel? Mauch was asked. The second-year player interestingly said he can’t tell too much without pads on. Tomorrow, Monday, will be the first Bucs real-football, padded practice of the season.

“It’s tough to say without shoulder pads on if [the extra weight has] really helped much with like an anchor in pass protection or anything,” Mauch said. ‘But I feel great out there so, I mean, hopefully it translates well once we get the pads on here.”

“… You’d think putting on a little bit of weight might slow you down a little bit. I haven’t noticed anything like that.”

Head coach Todd Bowles was counting on Mauch to add weight this offseason. Bowles went there back in March. It was an element of Bowles’ quest to have a bigger offensive line this season.

Physicality was a major issue for Bowles last season on the O-line. Former Bucs offensive coordinator Dave Canales gave a telling glimpse into that in March.

So much changes once those pads come on when it comes to building this year’s Bucs. Thankfully, the long wait is almost over.

I still want a big LG! So big he blocks out the sun. Maybe next draft. Can’t wait to watch Klien in preseason. Hope we can develop him into a starter.

  2. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

If you watch Baker highlights’23 – you can see Hainsey and the IOL getting knocked back consistently. That should be a big change this year. Need to knock the snot out of people. Be more physical and win the trenches.

  3. BootyLover Says:

I recall reading scouts thought Mauch had already maxed out his weight from his tight end conversion. I don’t know if there’s any truth to that, but if true, we can’t expect him to turn into a mountain in an offseason. His arms look a little bigger than last year. Still, he’s not a big Guard.

I don’t find him to be as good as I hoped he would be. Ugh maybe he still has some time to show up. I didn’t like the RT Luke Goedeke either. So maybe he can turn into something better. Run blocking has been hard for Tampa because well we don’t really run the ball anymore. We have really diverted away from skilled RBs and power backs to scat backs and receiving H-backs.

I personally think a lot of guys also just aren’t big anymore these days. Most guys aren’t 5-9 to 5-11 225Lbs+ pure muscle, 4.4 speed and can bench 225 20x or more. That being said no run game in TB no good run blocking grades. Simple as that, new OC and new rules now though so hopefully he likes to run but even then we prob won’t see it this year. Unless you’re a Rashaad White fan. I like him as our 3rd down back, to me he’s not lead back material and I also think his pass blocking could use some work. Especially since we don’t have any really skilled TEs on the team.

That’s another thing that hurts the entire O-line and offense because not enough skilled pass blocking TEs and RBs. Have to be able to have everyone you get be able to block. Ko Kieft FB/TE can block and can play ST so he’s useful. I can’t really say that about a lot of guys.

Again this is all just an opinion. I mean I’m not some football recruiter or pro scout, I just like what I like. I’ve played and watched enough football to know what works and doesn’t work. Without these added non skilled positions the defense is able to see that after awhile and then the D coordinator is gonna blitz 8 in the box and force pressure on us constantly. Need that clean pocket. The Qb should never see the ground. That’s the sign of a truly great OL. I’ve seen some rare occasions of a truly remarkable OL in this league over the years.
I think TB could have one the next year or two potentially. .

    @74 Bucs Fan –

I agree. Need some improvement there still clearly. To truly get where we need though it’s gonna take a little bit more time. Another year to master this OLs true potential. It’s so gonna be worth the wait though so get ready guys. Fun is coming back to Tampa. Unfortunately imo this year an at best 9-8 seasons is looking to come their way. Idk even 10-7 would be a quite remarkable feat.

As for right now I still think right now it makes the most sense to put Graham Barton at LG then by next offseason start C. I think he’s a real mauler. Quick and fast with strong upper body, back , and legs. Really does remind me a lot of Quinten Nelson. Idk why. Just seems like a true road grader power house OL. His style seems so effortless. Robert Hainsey sadly might be already ready to go at C and might not be as good at G, but he also may be our best option at G. It’s kind of tough.

  6. ThatAintRight! Says:

Cody’s Arms and shoulders upper body did look way better. That probably really helps him out going forward. Hope he has an all pro season in year 2.
    LETS GO TB BUCS!!!

  7. Gipper Says:

Not sold on the entire right side of the O line. Hope Mauch is better this year. Goedke got pushed around pretty well last year. Maybe both settle in better this year?

  8. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Muscle mass is heavier than fat mass. If he added muscle mass it will translate on the field because he will be stronger, but if it’s fat then he’ll be worse because d line guys will be stronger than last year

  9. Rod Munch Says:

Great to hear. His biggest issue last year was his playing strength as he was getting pushed around a bit, which isn’t unexpected for a rookie coming from a small school. But Licht likes taking those college tackles because they can generally add a lot of strength to their frames, so hopefully he did just that.

So, in that case Baker picks up the blitz, audibles out of the play and drops a quick pass over the middle to JMc or Trey.

  11. Rod Munch Says:

Citrus County – You’re assuming that Bowles hasn’t banned slants.

Also, with Bakers accuracy issues past 10 yards downfield, I’d just run screens to White all day in that situation.

Muscle mass is heavier than fat mass.
    >

If talking about “heaviness” of a mass, they are the same.
i.e. a pound of muscle mass and a pound of fat mass are the same heaviness. They both weigh a pound.

While excess body fat can impact agility, it’s not a definitive factor. In his offseason workout he could have gained strength (thru muscle building), mass (thru muscle and fat), and agility (through essential agility training – many times very different than strength training).

Some work out warriors talk all day about strength and have very poor agility.

And ultimately, Newton’s 2nd law of physics clearly states it is harder to move 315lbs than 300lbs.

  13. Fred McNeil Says:

I was curious Geno, so I looked it up. True a pound is a pound. Muscle is little bit denser so a pound of fat tales up a little more room.

  14. Fred McNeil Says:

And also, Geno, it lakes a little more energy to move 315 lbs compared to 300. Fay, though stores a little energy but doesn’t contribute to the motive force. Muscle adds more force, but it needs more energy. Guzzle some Gatorade.

Measured by volume, muscle has greater mass.

You know what he meant, brainiac.

  16. Badbucs Says:

DL and OL are still works in progress. OL more so. We are scrounging through the next two years with 50 mil per year in dead cap baggage. The scrubs we brought in on the left and the picks on the right are stop gap measures. Baker will still be dodging some bullets and White will do what he can. It still should be an improvement on both sides of the ball. Barton looks for real. Jury still out on Mauch, Klein, and the FA’S. It sure looks like they’re all working on making it better. Go Bucs!
