Todd Bowles Names Six Training Camp Standouts

July 31st, 2024

New Bucs left guard Ben Bredeson.

So the Bucs were in pads for the first time this summer on Monday.

That means after practice, head coach Todd Bowles got to dissect the film and decide who looked good playing real football, not flag football.

Bowles visited the Ira Kaufman Podcast before last night’s practice and Joe asked Bowles to tell fans who popped on film during Day 1 in pads.

“Defensively, between YaYa [Diaby] and Zyon McCollum, they’ve been having an outstanding camp thus far,” Bowles said. “Offensively, Baker [Mayfield]; I like the way [Jalen] McMillan’s been looking at wide receiver. [Graham] Barton’s coming along. [Ben] Bredeson’s been doing some very good things at guard.”

Man, Joe was fired up to hear Barton’s name come out of Bowles’ mouth. The Bucs desperately need him, their first-round draft pick, to hit the ground running. And it’s icing on the cake that Bredeson is impressing early.

Joe also asked Bowles to say how many players are having a rough training camp.

Coach paused and said, “If any, maybe one.”

Enjoy all of Coach’s 14-minute segment in the podcast.

  1. Hodad Says:

Watched Barton’s presser yesterday. He mentioned Bredeson as someone who’s been helping him along. If I had to guess I’d say Ben will be the starting LG. Having watched clips of Barton at camp, it’s obvious he’s our starting center, and he’s been looking good in that position.

  2. BucU Says:

And knock on wood no serious injuries so far.

  3. DoooshLaRue Says:

I wonder who that “one” is?

  4. SB~LV Says:

    One =
    Trask

  5. CJBucsFan Says:

My guess for that one would be Gregory

  6. Dave Pear Says:

Naa – Todd is just continuing to lie about Baker because he’d rather lose than play the far superior QB. He’d rather be fired than let the Simple Jacks “see what we have” in Trask.

    Makes perfect sense.

  7. Mostly Peaceful Trask Fan Says:

Mayfield hasn’t had a stellar camp. He doesn’t need to, but still it’s been meh – like the guy is just getting the work in.

    This is all hype.

  8. Mike Says:

Not sure what you been reading or hearing mostly peace Trask fan but Mayfield has been making plays all camp and has been looking sharp of course your going to throw ints as a QB but overalls he’s been good.

  9. Mike Says:

All the news coming out of Bucs camp has been very positive and I’m excited to see these guys play come preseason!

  10. Capt Jimbo Neal Says:

Don’t know what you gals are reading but based on Joe’s camp notes Baker and Wolford aren’t looking sharp at all – especially Wolford – and Trask has been sharp except for one bad day.

  11. BA’s Red Pen Says:

My first thought was Gregory as well.

  12. BA’s Red Pen Says:

Mike, that’s why she’s referred to mostly stupid Trask fan by everyone.

  13. Lord Cornelius Says:

I haven’t even thought of the possibility that Bredeson or someone else could step in and excel at LG. I figured it’d be a stop gap type thing until we can draft the next guy.

    That’d be a huge win.

It’ll be good to get into preseason to get an idea of how much is bad o line or good pass rush

  14. Booger Says:

My first thought was Gregory as well, but why is it that Trask seems to only throw to TE’s and RB’s like 90% of the time???

  15. ThatAintRight! Says:

You make a very good point Booger. Like in all honesty he got paid and did his thing he’s banging some hot chick he graduated and lives in FL. He’s on his way to becoming an electrician or something probably very soon. Lol. He’s not gonna do much if baker goes down. It’s very important the protection is there for baker and he handles his health well this year in advance. Let’s Go Bucs.

As for throwing to TEs and RBs well I think his lack of confidence is a big part of it. They raved about his long arm I remember coming out of college idk what happened. I’ve never seen him do nothing. Not even in preseason.

  16. Dave Pear Says:

Traskophiles are accusing Bowles of downright incompetence. These Simple Jacks should be putting forward a petition to have Bowles and Licht fired for purposely lying about Baker in order to keep the best player off of the field, so as to reduce the Bucs chances of winning.

These morons that say Bowles is just spewing hype are hilarious. There’s a lot more to what the QBs need to do to pick up Coen’s new offense than complete passes. That’s a part of it for sure but lots more to it.

Never go full retard. Use a few Joe notes to conclude Trashk is once again having the superior camp, and is being suppressed by the great and stupid conspiracy.

  17. JimBobBuc Says:

It’s interesting that Bowles mentioned two IOL guys. In the practice notes, the running game seems better and even some of the runs up the middle are productive. VV and Kancey haven’t been mentioned much in practice notes, so it’s not like they are dominating the IOL.

When I went to one practice session last week, I saw Barton off to the side working on shotgun snaps and he was inconsistent IMO. Something for Joe to watch is Barton’s shotgun snap quality.

  18. Crickett Baker Says:

I just hope Barton plays better than he speaks. He says “you know” about every 5 words and I can hardly listen to him.

  19. Capt Jimbo Neal Says:

Booger Says: “My first thought was Gregory as well, but why is it that Trask seems to only throw to TE’s and RB’s like 90% of the time???”

Because the top receivers – Evans, Godwin – play mostly with Baker?

  20. Joe Says:

Because the top receivers – Evans, Godwin – play mostly with Baker?

    Ding.

Hence, first-team, second-team, third-team. In other words starters (first team), immediate backups (second-team), bubble players, camp meat (third-team).

  21. gofortheface30 Says:

Dave Pear – loving the Tropic Thunder references. Back when society appreciated comedy more than movies made for the stupid masses (thanks marvel)

  22. bucnjim Says:

I believe Barton is just dealing with some nervousness and anxiety. You can hear it in his voice and see it in the shotgun snaps. He’ll be settled in and ready to go in a few weeks. Of course game day is a completely different animal.

  23. SlyPirate Says:

Did y’all know Bucky wants more reps so Trask has been hanging out after practice to review the playbook and run routes?

    Kinda cool.

  24. LaughingGuy Says:

Buc fans are hilarious. You all had Baker take you to the playoffs and you are still screaming for Trask.

Is your stupidity a learned behavior or inherited?

  25. jarrett Says:

    Hey Joe

I think it might be possible we might be a better team than last year.

    Maybe we shall see

  26. Dave Pear Says:

Nice note about Kyle and Bucky, Sly. No questioning his ethics or heart. He’s a real feel good story.

  27. Mike Says:

WOW. The Trask haters and lovers are thick on this one. The one who is not having a good camp is one of the updraft guys struggling to keep pace. I can’t remember who it was. I just remember an article about the struggles. All 3 QBs are having their ups and downs. It is just best to know that the injuries are minimal to none. Let’s just hope these guys make it through preseason unskaved. I do hope Trask gets the backup roll. But if he doesn’t the man will be fine.

  28. Fred McNeil Says:

I would almost guarantee we will be a good bit better.

  29. GoneGator Says:

“Nice note about Kyle and Bucky, Sly. No questioning his ethics or heart. He’s a real feel good story.”

I agree. Bucky says Kyle also does audio tapes of all the play calls for him to listen to 😊.
    I friggin love that.

Sounds like the only real division is with the fans..The team itself seems Uber united.

  30. Ol' Boy Says:

How many picks has Baker thrown so far? Obviously there will be a pick here and there, even Brady had a couple although he would question the recipient as to what he saw to make it happen. Now, let’s not compare baker and Brady but how about Winston? Did he also have any unusually high amount of int’s in camp?
I don’t see how Baker is on this particular list of coach Bowles’. He should be on the other list..

  31. SlyPirate Says:

Super curious how many UDFA might make the team?

    Kameron Johnson – WR
    Tyrek Funderburk – DB
    Kalen DeLoach – LB

These guys are killing it. So are former UDFA and late picks: Jose Ramirez, Markeez Watts, Devin Culp, and Sean Tucker.

Going to be some tough cuts.

  32. Rod Munch Says:

I like seeing the name Ben Bredeson – that guy should be everyone’s favorite player. He said the thing he hates most in the world are people who drive slow in the fast lane. Now that is something everyone who isn’t a cupcake can get behind. People driving slow in the fast lane are literally gutter trash, and like all trash, they should be removed and throw into a pit to rot while covered in dirt. So he’s a guy everyone should rally behind!

  33. Buchen61 Says:

I have serious reservations that half of you all even know what a football looks like

  34. Usfbuc Says:

I thought I would come back and see how the comments were going and I see it’s the same as it was Baker vs Trask fans. Just give it a rest, Baker fans stop attacking and making fun of Trask fans and they will probably stop posting. Trask fans just accept that Baker is the starter and he did decent last year. Bring the torches and pitchforks if he stinks up the place during the season.

  35. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Faker fangirls are such cupcakes. Even when no one mentions his name they will always find a way to drag Trask into the convo. Better watch out Baker cheer leaders your feeble brains might break down if you stop thinking and day dreaming about your man crush. Pear Bottom Dave it’s crazy a moron has the nerve to call other people morons. Reading you fangirls just sorting each other is so cute. Your crush is on his 7th year so why is he struggling so much? It’s gonna be a prelude to how he will be during the season. No wonder he’s on his 4th team

  36. Buddy Says:

    Randy Gregory Is the one

  37. Anonymous Says:

No way the “one” is Gregory. He’s not counting him. Doubtful Bowles even considers him as existing as a player in the league. He was never here…

  38. GoneGator Says:

” I like seeing the name Ben Bredeson”

Well Rod, you’re going to see it a lot – that’s our new starter @LG

  39. Dave Pear Says:

FatGirl99 – I use performance based data, facts and reality as my basis

You have a single agenda – anoint Trashk so you can finish crusting up the poster over your bed. If you don’t like how the pros who get paid $million$ a year decide who starts, call the Glazers.

Your boy sucks because you suck.

  40. Rod Munch Says:

Nevermind what I said – I’m an idiot. I was talking about the kid we drafted Elijah Klein in the 6th round. I got all excited that perhaps Licht made another homerun offensive lineman pick – then topped with his hatred of people driving in the slow lane, that I failed to realize I was talking about the wrong person.

I sincerely apologize with complete and total sincerity that I’ll make sure it never, ever, ever, never happens again.

  41. garro Says:

I’m most excited to hear Bredeson’s name from Bowles. If true that bodes well for us. Barton is gonna be the guy regardless and I would not expect Todd to say anything less than he did.

    Go Bucs!
