Todd Bowles Lauds “Fresh Ideas”

July 18th, 2024

Joe has long been intrigued by the little-known hire of the Bucs’ passing game coordinator.

Josh Grizzard signed with Tampa Bay this offseason after seven years with the Dolphins. That means he stuck in Miami through three head coaches. That’s not easy to do. And the guy just turned 34 years old.

So is Grizzard some sort of emerging offensive wizard? Joe can’t go that far, but Grizzard, who was a receivers coach in Miami and worked in quality control, did play and coach at Yale. And Todd Bowles seems to think he’s already made a mark.

“Griz, the passing coordinator from Miami, has a bunch of fresh ideas so we don’t stay stale, and he does a good job,” Bowles told The Sick Podcast — Pirate Parlay this week.

The Dolphins offense has been special under their head coach of the past two seasons, Mike McDaniel. So Joe suspects Grizzard has brought quality concepts to Tampa, in addition to his own football acumen.

Joe’s very intrigued by the new Bucs offensive staff as a whole. Whether they’re any good, well, that’ll be clear in a three or four months.

Fresh ideas and Todd Bowles are as different as a President and the truth

  2. Todd Says:

I’m going to miss running behind the left guard on every 1st down.

  3. dls5492 Says:

    Gizzard the Wizard!

  4. Dave Pear Says:

Hopefully this Gizzard and Coen mesh well. And Todd must stay true to his word and insist that the number one metric for measuring the offense is points scored, not number of runs up the middle behind three matadors, or time of possession absent any consideration for game situation.

Look for the Bucs to open it up. More quick slants, Rachaad darts out of the backfield.

  5. Dude Says:

Started his career working for David Cutcliffe at Duke.

Got Waddle to set records as a rookie for receptions.

And last season the Dolphins were one of the best offenses in all of football, so I’ll take him

  6. Dave Pear Says:

Why did the Dolphins let Gizzard go?

  7. Rod Munch Says:

Turns out… and get this… you don’t have to run up the middle on 1st down. There’s nothing in the rule book about it! Turns out you can run off tackle as well. Can’t believe I never knew that – and this will really open things up.

  8. Dave Pear Says:

    Damn the autocorrect.

  9. Dude Says:

“Why did the Dolphins let Gizzard go?”

No clue, but Grizzard played for McDaniels at Yale and it can be as simple as McDaniels allowed him to go so he can grow professionally.

Same for Kirby Smart letting McClendon jump to the league.

  10. GoneGator Says:

I’d asked about this guy in another comment awhile back…. Thought he might be a hidden gem among the coaching hires.

I can definitely see our personnel running some of the Miami pass game.

As @Dave Pear said it’s very important Grizzard and Coen “mesh well”.

Coen has what he’s always wanted… To be top offensive dog for an NFL team. I hope he’s ready to roll and brings proven concepts that fit our personnel AND some creativity and innovation.

Pretty sure even I could design an explosive top 10 or top 5 offense with the players we have IF we could solve the IOL issues.

    LFG Bucs!

Don’t STAY stale? Interesting way to say it.

  12. JimBobBuc Says:

Not sure who hired Grizzard, but I love the hire. I just hope that Coen listens, and uses, the ideas Grizzard brings from Miami.

  13. Defense Rules Says:

Dave Pear … ‘Look for the Bucs to open it up. More quick slants, Rachaad darts out of the backfield.’

Wholeheartedly agree with you that the Bucs will look to ‘open it up’ this year. Bucs seemed to use fewer quick slants than almost any other team I watched over the past several years, but hopefully Coen sees the value in them. Not exactly sure what ‘Rachaad darts out of the backfield’ means, but if it means seeing a hole quickly & hitting it with authority, then I’m all for it. Notice BTW that he’s been used very little for around-the-end plays.

  14. Fred McNeil Says:

Well, he did come from an excellent coaching staff in Miami. What is it? Three or four weeks till we have a “game”. I think the week after that is joint practices but I don’t remember who.

  15. heyjude Says:

Wow, this was a great hire. Agree with Dude, Dave Pear, and others, don’t care why he left the Dolphins. it sounds like we are very lucky to have him as the passing game coordinator. Coach McDaniels seems like a great guy, so it sounds like we did get a gem as GoneGator mentioned.

  16. Hodad Says:

Why did the Dolphins let him go? Did you ever think maybe he wanted out?

  17. Stanglassman Says:

Looks like he left the Dolphins because he wanted a bigger role in the offense.

    From a yahoo article.

“When Mike McDaniel arrived in South Florida and brought Wes Welker with him, Grizzard moved back to quality control for 2022-23.

Now, he’ll have the opportunity to take on a larger role with the Buccaneers as their pass-game coordinator.”

  18. SlyPirate Says:

    SO SO SO INTERESTING …

YEAR 1: Bowles wants a conservative offense with Leftwich.
Doesn’t work. Shifted to heavy pass by EOY to make the playoffs.
    Leftwich fired.

YEAR 2: Bowles wants a conservative offense with Canales.
Doesn’t work. Shifted to heavy pass by EOY to make the playoffs.
    Canales leaves.

YEAR 3: Has Bowles learned this is a passing league and his best players on WR? Did Licht tell Bowles open it up? Either way, it would be a huge improvement. The Bucs would win more games. We may have an OC that makes it to year 2.

    Fingers crossed!!!!

  19. Daniel Hammond Says:

I think he is going to end up being a great coach for us hopefully Liam coen will listen to all the coaches around him and take their ideas too hopefully it’s one of those kind of coaches

  20. Tony Says:

Fresh ideas for him? For what? Restaurants to go to?

  21. Dude Says:

Good find Stanglassman, professional growth, it’s gone undermnetioned but the league as a whole has gotten younger the last 2-3 seasons on the field and especially on the sidelines.

  22. SenileSenior Says:

The article says Bowles lauds fresh ideas. Some of his critics need to read this article. His mind is not closed

    Go Bucs!

  23. SenileSenior Says:

I hate the autocorrect too! 😒

  24. Buddha Says:

    Good hire.

  25. Dave Pear Says:

“Rachaad darts out of the backfield” should have read “Rachaad CATCHES darts out of the backfield.” Ya, after two years of 3 something YPC it would be a mystery what the first sentence meant. Hopefully Coen and GRizzard (beat the autocorrect) team up to find some cool hybrid blend between West Coast slants, seam routes, and ME once again feasting deep. And when they run it, the opponent will be favoring the pass, making it less stressful for our untested OL group to run block.

Thank for this cool information. Great to know Bowles is looking to improve. I didn’t realize we hired this gentleman any fresh ideas are always a good thing in all businesses.

Thank you for researching. All sounds good!
