Todd Bowles Jumps On The YaYa Diaby Bandwagon

July 31st, 2024

Please don’t hide Yaya Diaby.

Back in November when the Bucs traveled to the 49ers, the Bucs didn’t exactly get destroyed, losing by two touchdowns.

San Francisco pulled away from Tampa Bay in the third quarter outscoring the Bucs 14-0. In that game, Bucs edge rusher YaYa Diaby had two sacks of Brock Purdy despite Diaby being off the field for a major chunk of the game.

Joe was outraged. Why wasn’t Diaby on the field more? He only logged 21 snaps of 60 possible snaps. Appalling!

Well, the very next game at Indianapolis, Diaby got his first NFL start. He got 48 snaps, 66 percent of the Colts’ snaps. That was much better.

It seems Diaby has come a long way in Bucs coach Todd Bowles’ eyes — from not trusting him against the 49ers to now raving about the second-year pass rusher from Louisville.

Last night at the Glazer Shed, the Bucs’ pass rush came alive in practice, led by Diaby. And Bowles crowed about Diaby’s performance through six training camp days.

“He’s playing well,” Bowles said of Diaby. “He’s playing strong, he’s playing fast, he’s playing intelligent football right now.

“Since [training] camp has started, he’s had a hell of a camp.”

When Bowles says this, you know a player is balling out.

It’s still July, just for a few hours. Joe has seen plenty of players go from having a dynamite July to being difficult to find in September and beyond.

Joe cannot express how much Joe wants to see Diaby blow up when the real bullets are flying this fall.

YaYa, just watching him play, has the looks of something special. Obviously it’s a lazy comparison since we just saw him – but he really does remind me a lot of JPP. He’s not quite as big and lanky, but just the play style and swagger is there.

Also, how is JPP only 35 years old? I thought he was older than that. Bring him back, even as a part-time mentor he’d be a great add. They should have some money freed up when they cut Randy Gregory.

Two things that must happen within hours.

    1. Wirfs is locked up long term.

    2. Gregory is sent to a Cannabis Camp in Montana, far far away from everyone.

Give him a case of Bootysweat and some Bustanut bars to keep him nourished.

    Suh.

Yes watching Bowles keeping Ya Ya on the side line was maddening. Glad he’s a starter now. Hopefully we’ll need fewer blitzes this year to get to the qb

Yeah, but they don’t need a roster filler on the defensive line. But at LB … that depth chart is scary, and you could absolutely ‘waste’ a roster spot on someone like JPP, even if he never or rarely played, and he did play last year and looked good in limited snaps when he was healthy (at least that’s what I recall).
