“They’re Both Going To Play A Ton”

July 22nd, 2024

Receiver Trey Palmer with head coach Todd Bowles.

Not much of a competition for the No. 3 receiver slot at One Buc Palace.

On paper, sure, second-year man Trey Palmer (39 catches) and rookie third-round pick Jalen McMillan are locked in a battle. But that’s not really reality, explained new Bucs offensive coordinator Liam Coen.

“Less off a [competition], more of their roles within that position; they’re both going to play a ton,” Coen told The Sick Podcast — Pirate Parlay. “So yeah, it’s a competition because who’s going to walk out there Day 1 and play the Z position, yes, but they’re both going to play. They’re both going to have roles. Now they do some things differently, but both can stretch the field … Both can run some different routes. I don’t know if I look at it as a true comp.”

Forget the competition, Joe’s impressed that Coen already believes rookie McMillan will play “a ton.” That means he truly opened eyes in the spring and talk of that wasn’t just rhetoric.

I’m getting the sense that Coen fully understands Baker as a QB and is putting the type of offense together that will benefit him and maximize his abilities. Baker is clearly the leader of this team and has the confidence and backing of his teammates. Baker is now in better shape and has an excellent corps of receivers. If the O line can hang on while gelling and improving for the first few games and Coen can make something of the running game, the Mayfield/Coen relationship may indeed prove to be the combination that makes Baker Mayfield our version of Drew Brees.

I see that happening. I hope I’m right.

  2. Dave Pear Says:

Really it’s just a smoke screen to fool defenses into anticipating pass, and Liam will cross them up with runs up the right gut.

    Canalwater will be proud.

  3. GoneGator Says:

Love hearing this from Coen. I think we may have found a winner at OC. Time will tell but I’m psyched about the O! Would be criminal to not use Jmac and Tre. Just CATCH the ball!

I think the O- line is going to make or break us offensively this year.
Not having significant improvement in that area seems to me to be the most likely reason the offense might struggle.

    Let’s go Liam!

  4. Hodad Says:

I keep saying J Mac wasn’t drafted to replace Godwin, or Palmer, or anyone else. McMillan was brought in, drafted, because he’s a heck of a talent that adds, doesn’t replace anyone. The more good players you add, the better.

  5. Dude Says:

I like like Palmer & JMac, but I really wanna see Rakim Jarrett push both of those guys.

  6. Pewter Power Says:

Likely translation McMillan is the better route runner but Palmer is the speedster

  7. Tom Says:

Compared to leftwich, canales brought a sense of stability and leadership to the offense. That said, canales was not a good play caller and his insistence on trying to run the ball exclusively on first downs and utilizing multiple ineffective TEs on running plays only bunched the D near the line of scrimmage making it even harder to be productive. Baker saved a lot of games by his scrambling ability and completing passes that were not well designed. Canales was a good qb coach but not a good OC

  8. FIRETHECANNONS Says:

I remember when canales was hired. We had phone conferences in his newly bought home – many things with the pen and mic club… Coen has, at least to my unobservant azz been quite the opposite. I hope that translates better from an OC standpoint. I get a feeling it that he is a more talk less – prove more kinda guy and I really like that.

  9. Bucswin! Says:

    Weapons for Baker! Go BUCS!

“Coen has, at least to my unobservant azz been quite the opposite”

Coach and like 4-5 others Bucs just had their first children. Partly why I’m not sweating Wirfs because he’s a new dad too

  11. Rod Says:

Canales was not as good an OC as Super Bowl winning OC Byron Leftwich.
Look at the stats on both and see for yourself.
