The Difference Between Bucs’ Evals And #NFLMedia Evals

July 7th, 2024

Studying Bucs’ under-25 players.

When the Bucs look at their roster, they see a young team that has played a lot of snaps and will take the next step this season to make the Bucs a stronger club.

National #NFLMedia look at the same roster and see the likes of Joe Tryon-Shoyinka and Logan Hall, and hold their stomachs in order not to yack and ask, “What are the Bucs talking about?”

This is why you read and hear so many national #NFLMedia mocking the Bucs roster while praising its stars, slapping Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht for not being more aggressive in free agency for proven production.

Licht trusts his young players. National pundits do not.

In typing for BSPN about teams that have the best under-25 players, Aaron Schatz, the inventor of DVOA and the founder of Football Outsiders (RIP), is one of those guys not fond of the young Bucs.

Schatz had the Bucs’ under-25 players ranked at No. 21. This is sort of a trick ranking. For example, Schatz listed the young Bucs players who are now 25 or older: Tristan Wirfs, Luke Goedeke, Rachaad White, Cody Mauch, Yaya Diaby, Cade Otton and JTS.

Schatz really, really likes Bucs defensive tackle Calijah Kancey and says he flashes rare skills but Kancey can’t elevate others under-25.

Joe its obvious we have the talent evaluators, to draft good players and the coaching staff was just upgraded IMO. So it comes down to the individual player wanting it…. How do we get them highly motivated, is the multi million dollar question…

  2. Proudbucsfan Says:

We will prove all the media idiots wrong again this year. 11-6 or 12-5 this season I was very skeptical of Baker last year and he won me over. I believe he is going to be even better than he was last season, no regression only more improvement. Can’t wait go Bucs 🍻

  3. Pickgrin Says:

    Graham Barton
    Chris Braswell
    Kalen DeLoach
    Sirvocea Dennis
    Payne Durham
Tyrek Funderburk (don’t laugh – dudes a player)
    Bucky Irving
    Christian Izien
    Rakim Jarrett
    Calijah Kancey
    Jalen McMillan
    Kaevon Merriweather
    Trey Palmer
    Tykee Smith
    Sean Tucker
    Marquis Watts

Thats quite a bit of “under 25” talent.

now lets add the 25 year olds just for fun…

    KJ Britt
    Jake Camarda
    YaYa Diaby
    Luke Goedeke
    Mike Green
    Robert Hainsey
    Josh Hayes
    Cody Mauch
    Zyon McCollum
    Cade Otten
    Jose Ramirez
    JJ Russell
    Joe Tryon Shoyinka
    Rachaad White
    Antoine Winfield Jr

Now scan that entire list again of 25 and under players – and try to tell me the Buccaneers do not have the most young talent of any team in the NFL…..

  4. tampabaybucfan Says:

We need production out of our top draft picks……JTS, Hall, Kancey, Graham, Mauch, Braswell, Goedeke……

These are the 1st & 2nd round picks recently…..not impressed so far with JTS or Hall.

  5. Irishmist Says:

In order of importance, these are the young guys who need to step up if we are to succeed: McCollum, Braswell/Watts, Barton, Kancey, McMillan and Durham. If they play well, we have a good chance to make the playoffs again.

  6. ModHairKen Says:

I want to know what they are doing to prepare for the new KO rules. Laugh if you think it’s unimportant. But watch and see how many games it changes this season.

  7. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

Impressed with all listed except Hall and JTS. Didn’t see much on college tape of them either and didn’t like the picks as they looked like developmental guys. Can they develop? We’ll be watching gents – it’s time to show that you have learned some new moves and have grown. Otherwise, enjoy the bench and get your resumes ready.

  8. Fred McNeil Says:

Honestly, last year’s team was assembled out of UDFAs and el-cheapo free agents along with our draft picks. We’ve been making the playoffs lately so our draft position has been kinda crappy. With Brady and Jenson retiring we’ve dealt with massive dead cap hits. Yet, here we are looking at a very possible (probable) division championship. We have an obvious improvement in several positions. Yet, here we are giving credence to the uninformed musings of an aptly named kAarron Schatz. Gotta love the thumb-twiddlin’ part of the NFL season.

  9. Alanbucsfan Says:

Put Whitehead, Braswell and Smith on last year’s Bucs Defense
Put Barton , McMillan and Irving on last year’s Bucs Offense
Good chance Bucs would’ve been in NFC Championship Game
Bucs may be most improved team in NFC

  10. Defense Rules Says:

Joe … ‘Licht trusts his young players. National pundits do not because they don’t believe the younger players have produced enough to be given the benefit of the doubt.’

Spot on Joe. Then again, it’s not like we have the spare cash to afford big-name FAs either. Also interesting that no one ever mentions how well this coaching staff has DEVELOPED our young talent ov er the past 5 years.

  11. JimBobBuc Says:

I haven’t looked at the list, but considering we won the division and didn’t have the top draft positions, Licht has done very well. The non-player press over-weights flashy positions like QB, WR, and Edge. Keep building the trenches and avoid picking guys like Hall and JTS.

  12. ballwasher61 Says:

Both Hall & JTS have flashed and were late 1st early 2nd picks from playoff teams. I think both will be fine, I do like Hall though. I believe Bucs have done outstanding in drafts and coaching young talent, I also like how the vet’s have kept the Brady effect rolling, smart and attentive young men that work hard will pay the dividends this fall I believe. Barring injuries I really can see us going going 13-4 and solidifying homefield through the playoff’s. I think this team is mature beyond it’s years and Jason & Co. draft these types of guys. Go Bucs.

  13. ballwasher61 Says:

All I wanna hear when they introduce our team on the field is the Darth Vader theme.

  14. Dave Pear Says:

    “I am your father!”

  15. ballwasher61 Says:

    “That’s IMPOSSIBLE’.

  16. Jason Says:

Hall and JTS are the reason Licht stopped drafting Gumby to rush the passer. Now he drafts smart dogs. Love are last two drats.

  17. PowerOfPewter Says:

If Licht signs big dollar FAs, it means Bucs can’t re-sign Evans and David. Or sign Mayfield. Bucs had to clear dead cap money from Brady’s and Jensen’s contracts. All that will be cleared following this season, and JTS and Hall won’t be getting big money. Even with paying new contracts for Wirfs and Godwin, Bucs should have the cap space to sign a FA or 2 next year. Add in a good draft, and the Bucs should be pretty dang solid.

  18. garro Says:

So according to the wingnut writers around the NFL… The rest of our roster. The over 25 crowd is crap as well as Hall an JTS?

Bottom line is that they never do their due diligence on our roster and it shows up glaringly in most all of their posts. These stat geeks really need to actually watch some football me thinks.

Do we have holes? Absolutely! So does every team in the league.

    Go Bucs!

    Graham Barton
    Chris Braswell
    Kalen DeLoach

    Payne Durham…..

Wow Pickgrin! thanks! That is as uplifting a post as I have seen from anyone in a long time! That is a lot of truth revealed. Not sure that is allowed here from our cheap seats as amateur GMS. LOL

    Go Bucs!

  20. Rod Munch Says:

Something interesting this year, that broke from previous years, was Licht taking a bunch of older players. He generally drafted guys who were really young (for example, Ronald Jones who feels like he’s been around forever is still just 26 years old). This year, meanwhile he took guys like Smith who are 23 already, old by NFL rookie standards.

Generally you draft older guys because they need to play early, and Licht is betting on draft picks to step in on day one. Generally that’s a very very risky thing to do, but his track record lately is quite good.

  21. TampabayDJ Says:

Oh they do their homework on our Bucs. They just can’t bring themselves to admit that they were wrong about last year. Remember when Evans, Baker, and LD were supposed to hit free agency ? Evans was the best WR the NFL has had on the FA market in years ! They said he was going to Houston, or KC and going to put whatever team he played for in the Super Bowl. As soon as he resigned with his Bucs , he’s back to being a good but not great, over 30 year old WR . Baker was supposedly going back to Carolina, or the Falcons, and was going to put them into the playoffs. As soon as he resigned with our Bucs , he is back to being an average QB that is going to regress this season because Canales is not here , lmfao..

  22. TampabayDJ Says:

My point is that they are still upset that our Bucs made all the so called gurus look like amateurs last year when they ALL said Bucs were going to win 4- 5 games at most. They love to hate our Bucs, even when Brady arrived and we win the Super Bowl, we had no respect the next year, but ended up winning 13 games and should have won another Super Bowl if not for the AINTS Bounty Gate 2.0 game with Sean “PunchableLips” Payton knowing it was his last year with the cap hell AINTS. Took out 5 starters in that game, including Godwin’s knee , Gronks ribs, Lenny, S.M.B. , and Ali Marpet
