The Baker Mayfield Slaps Keep Coming

July 30th, 2024

“I’m getting sick of this, Cade.”

Life feels great inside the bubble of Bucs training camp, but as Joe shared all through the spring and into summer, Tampa Bay continues to be slapped around across the country.

In a deep breakdown yesterday of NFL team rankings for ESPN, former defensive end and current analyst Chris Long, who is very Bucs-friendly on his popular podcast, had no problem ranking the Bucs as the 18th-best team in the NFL.

For those who don’t want to do the math, that means Long sees Tampa Bay as missing the playoffs and finishing with a sub-.500 record.

Brad Hopkins also got on the Bucs-aren’t-that-good train. The longtime Titans left tackle and former Pro Bowler is one of the more chill and reasoned voices on SiriusXM NFL Radio.

Hopkins calmly explained to listeners this weekend how Baker Mayfield is Gardner Minshew, and vice versa. Per Hopkins, he likes how Mayfield and Minshew, two quarterbacks with losing records as starters, make players around them better, but they’re similar players because neither has enough talent to make a team a serious contender.

Joe is convinced this kind of chatter won’t subside for a while unless the Bucs open with a 3-1 record. Their first four games are against Washington, Denver and Philadelphia at home, and a road game at Detroit.

To the NFL world we’re a dumpster-fire where everybody panics.

Meanwhile this may have been the smoothest off-season and training camp (so far) we had in ages.

I mean I got last year, because it very much was chaos, but this is just so weird right now. What are they even complaining about?

  2. Zoocomics Says:

So I’m not in a total disagreement with Hopkins on this one. I think he’s better than Minshew, but the eye test tells me that Baker Mayfield is overrated. He’s Jeff Garcia, he’s scrapper that will give up his body to get you the first down in short yardage with his legs, and he’ll make a few really nice throws throughout the the season, but his skill players make him look better, and not the other way around. I don’t think he wins us a championship. Void of talent, Baker is a JAG. Also, I still find it so amazing how fans are so forgiving for Baker choking on the last drive against the Lions when the defense, which had struggled all game, gave them a chance with time on the clock and a time out, to drive down the field and tie it. Instead, JBF, and others on here will obsess about how Bowles didn’t take the last time out in hopes of a missed field goal and a miracle Hail Mary. smh. Yet no articles written on Baker given a chance to have a Brady greatness moment where he had a clean pocket to advance the ball, he makes a poor throw into coverage and yes, he choked in that moment, and yes, we don’t necessarily have to forgive him for that. Do you think the Lions would have been so forgiving with Goff if the roles were reversed? He’s just like Baker, drafted in the first to be the face of the franchise, and had since failed to meet expectations for one reason or another, but Goff at least has an NFC and Superbowl runner up on his resume.

For those that don’t think one throw, one play should make a difference in a football game, than you haven’t been paying attention to NFL history.

I’m not a Baker hater, I’m rooting for the kid heading into his 8th season, and I’m hoping with Coen, a revamped Oline, and an improved running game that he’s the right guy we just signed for $30M per. But we will see.

  3. Jeff Says:

Washington will be their biggest test. Not sure Bowles’ defense can handle a running QB. I’m worried the Bucs will be Tennessee Ready for this game.

  4. Capt Jimbo Neal Says:

“Long sees Tampa Bay as missing the playoffs and finishing with a sub-.500 record.”

    Let’s see…

    – Last year we barely made the playoffs with a 9-0 (3 field goals) win over a terrible Panthers team in game 17.
    – This year we have substantially the same team.
    – This year we have a tougher schedule.

Long is not short on reason.

  5. Bee Says:

    Zoocomics

I’ve been saying the same thing all off-season. Bakers last pass was a pick in the playoffs but the media calls him clutch. This isn’t hate, just the truth. I hope he plays better this year but we’ll probably get more of the same. We’ll see….

  6. Drunk Bucs Fan Says:

The hard part about saying if a qb is good enough to win a ring is how that isn’t based off anything but opinion. The fact right now is there is no evidence there are more than two in the league right now capable of winning it all.

It’s a no brainer to say Marino was better than Brad Johnson or Nick Foles, but here we are. Why does anyone think today’s 15 or so qb’s we think are better than Baker is someone that can win a ring? Like Dak, you like Lamar? Think they can win it all?

  7. Greg Says:

I think Zoocomic’s take is pretty spot on. Baker wasn’t great in that game vs. Detroit and I don’t think any of us were shocked when he threw that last pick.

BUT…we also shouldn’t forget he was coming off being the most prolific bucs QB in playoff history. Back to back +300 yds, 3 td games.

So, I’m also rooting for the kid. He’s not Gardner Minshew. He can make the players around him better (Mike most TDs in a year, Godwin +1000 yds playing out of position…).

Hopefully, with a better running game…
Hopefully with a creative and prolific offense from Coen…

But my worry, as Zoo points out, is that if we NEED Baker to be the guy to carry us to victory (by overcoming our weaknesses) then we could be in trouble.

But I think if you give us last years production on both sides of the ball and add to that just a league average run game we’re a very competitive team.

  8. Dude Says:

Zoocomics saying the quiet part out loud, but it’s the truth. Timeouts and INTs are harped on more than the 2 INTs in a 1 score game we lost.

  9. Beeej Says:

You throw enough passes, there will be picks. When they don’t have to respect the run, it’s even more likely

  10. Wyoming Joe Says:

Great to see that the Baker Haters are out in force. On one hand they say that they’re rooting for him, but on the other they call him a choker. Hilarious.

    What a ship of fools.

  11. Mostly Peaceful Trask Fan Says:

Bucs coasted on the fact that the NFC South is terrible.

Ask yourself this – does Mayfield get the contract if any other team in the division wins 10 games last year?

Mayfield had workable stats last year, and was aided by a short year end scoring streak, but up until that Jags game he was who we said he was – captain checkdown who struggled to hit 200 YPG. Even when he wasn’t that it was always a first half struggle with < 10 points. Mayfield getting yards in bunches against prevent defenses late in the game.

This year Bucs need to win 10+ games. If they don't – both Mayfield and Bowles will be jettisoned. Nobody likes the NFL purgatory of mediocrity.

Well maybe Bucs fans do? Some fans danced in the streets at 9-8.

  12. 727BUC Says:

Drunk bucs fan hit it pretty square on the nose. Good take bud. Takes all 52 guys plus some coaching/play calling to win a SB. Anyone who says Baker will never win us a super bowl is absolutely correct tho…. it will take a complete team effort. Just like it has for every other team, every other year. No QB has ever lined up on defense soooooooo. I like our chances and can’t wait to watch this team! Go Bucs!!!

  13. 727BUC Says:

*side note “that’s why we play the game”

  14. UGotRobbed Says:

They’re going to have to hang another bulletin board to able to hold all the negative stuff being thrown at them…lol!
    Keep bringing it!!

  15. infomeplease Says:

If the Bucs can produce a solid run game ( that would indicate a stronger OL), this offense will put up points. Bring on September!

  16. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Jose, practice has started. Maybe we can let go of the opinions of nobodies and concentrate on what we see with our own eyes. Meaning your eyes since I’m 90 miles away.

  17. JK Says:

Zoocomics: He’s entering his 7th, not 8th, season
He’s 2/6 leading his team to the playoffs, and winning playoff games in each conference. Pushing each opponent to the maximum in the divisional rounds.
    He’s plenty good enough
    And he’s getting better
I expect him to be a strong MVP candidate this season

  18. Crickett Baker Says:

I remember all the interceptions that Brady threw and our defense saved the games. He even threw 3 in one game and we still won.

  19. Scotty Mack Says:

I just roll my eyes reading most of these comments. Mayfield is a bargain for what he signed for. Besides, who do people think was a better option for the Bucs this year – someone who was actually available and that they could afford? I sure hope their answer isn’t Kyle Trask, a QB who has ZERO trade value and who would be extremely lucky to get ANY team other than the Bucks to sign him next year.

  20. Zoocomics Says:

@JK…my bad on the seasons, I missed that his stats were split in the same year of 2022 which I gave him another year for. Regarding MVP considerations…from your lips to god’s ears from friend. Go Bucs.

  21. D Cone Says:

Mayfield MVP Odds 2024 75:1 @ +7500. If that is strong place your bets.

  22. JustVisiting Says:

Posters who seem to think any season a team (and its starting quarterback) don’t win the Superbowl is a failure crack me up. It’s a 32-team league, folks; Lombardi Trophies are kinda hard to come by.

  23. Robbie Says:

So Joe, who are we going to lose to in those 1st four games?

  24. Dave Pear Says:

    Idjuts

  25. PowerOfPewter Says:

IDK why people give any attention to self-proclaimed pundits. On offense, Bucs improved at OLine, WR, RB, and coordinator; stayed pat at QB and TE. On defense, Bucs improved at OLB and secondary, held the same at DL and ILB. There’s no reason to infer the Bucs will do worse than last season, the floor is probably 10 wins and the ceiling is 12. ATL has to improve by 2 wins just to match Buc’s total from last season. The NFC South title will be decided on the field, not the blogosphere. Bucs are the 2023 defending div champions, have improved for this year, and are still the champions until knocked off.

  26. Eric phelps Says:

Let’s talk about all those 1st down 1 yard plays. How much practice did Baker get with 2nd and short. Let’s see him play with time, then we can judge

  27. Couch Fan Says:

Posters who seem to think any season a team (and its starting quarterback) don’t win the Superbowl is a failure crack me up. It’s a 32-team league, folks; Lombardi Trophies are kinda hard to come by.
    ——

Thats exactly what it is. A failure. You play to win the Lombardi do you not? Isn’t that the goal of every team? You can puff up your excuses all you want but nobody is playing to be 2nd best. Clearly though some fans are content with just shaking their pom poms while others actually want their team to be the best. Shocking!

  28. Bradley Brown Says:

Hey joe, you forgot to mention that the Buccaneers general manager loves AC/DC. Has he changed his mind?
And since the NFL is the epitome of a what have you done for me lately league, Baker Mayfield led the Buccaneers to a playoff appearance, a playoff victory, and a down to the wire division game.
Since we’re all about opinions here, I can’t think of a better quarterback to follow the legendary Tom Brady for the Buccaneers.

  29. CJBucsFan Says:

“Washington will be there biggest test” Besides rookie qbs putting work on Bowles defenses I see no logic in your comment. Washington blows and we have Detroit on the road. Maybe you missed that, De-freakin-troit! You know, the team that sent us home last year. Anyways, be better, Jeff.

  30. Dave Pear Says:

    Maroons

  31. Brassmky Says:

People amuse me on here, I believe the team is better, less turmoil and the division is mostly the same.

Canales, was a first time play caller, that’s has a horrible running scheme but a above average pass game. Took the team to mid season to even find footing.

We will see what happens this year with OC, I like the movement and we have better O line, this will hopefully translate to better offense play overall

Bowles, for all his faults is a good DC, and I think the defense has more tows for him to be creative with. I think we have a 9-10 win season and that’s considering a #1 schedule

  32. Paratrooper Buc Says:

Baker has positives like leadership, toughness, determination but he definitely needs a supporting cast to shine. Last year he had Mike, Godwin, White, and others but the Oline was rough. If the Oline is better than he should be better. As far as negative comments, even if Baker had a great year and the Bucs are 10+ and get to NFC championship, they would still trash him because short of winning a Super Bowl he is not good enough in their eyes.

  33. Jake been there since the beginning Says:

If you build it they will come, it’s close to being built really, now the coaches gotta coach em up. Let’s Go Bucs!!!!

Zoocomics if you think Mayfield choked at Detroit

    ————

He literally had the ball in his hands with 2 minutes left, needing to score, in the biggest moment of his career, in front of the biggest TV crowd to ever see him play – and he immediately choked.

Hopefully that doesn’t destroy and he can improve on a very middlingly 2023 and can get into a situation where he can redeem himself and comes through next time.

  37. CallTheSaltTruck Says:

@Zoocomics- Two better comparisons for me would be Trevor Lawrence and Jordan Love.

Lawrence’s stats are substantially worse in his first three seasons, including the playoffs, than Baker was in his first three seasons, including the playoffs. Both dealt with pretty poor coaching early, but bounced back to lead their team to the playoffs.

Love had a nearly identical season to Baker this year, with slightly better numbers, and an identical ending- a pick thrown in the clutch, a problem he had a few times last year.

Both of these QBs received MASSIVE contracts this year. Both get a lot of respect from analysts, respect Mayfield has never gotten. But when you ask players on the field, people like Tyreek Hill, or Josh Allen- they see Mayfield as dangerous and underrated.

How many games do you think the Bucs would've won with Trask starting last year? All Of them?

Rod, top 10 in the NFL yards, TDS and Passer Rating will never be middling, no matter how much you want it to be.

  40. Kenton Smith Says:

I’ve commented before on the Detroit game. I was fortunate enough to get to see the game. 135 decibals every time we snapped the ball. I swear 90 percent of those fans on their feet the whole game. Evans looked like a stallion flying for that game tying td in the fourth qtr. Our defense then got thrashed. A damn good defense. Goff is damn good. Those fans were great. Coaches unexplainably go for two after our last TD- Mayfields third td pass. Mayfield, coaches or defense did not choke!l 31-24. We’ll lose more games this year. But not many.

  41. Gipper Says:

Just nonsense. RodMunch wants to revive the interception vs Detroit monologue. Again, there is clear evidence that Otton ran the wrong pattern nearly running into Godwin who was crossing from the left. Otton tried to cross from the right and they almost collided. Otton was supposed to be much shallower sitting down in front of Detroit zone defense. Doesn’t matter because Baker is going to have a terrific 2024 season which is why Licht locked him up for 3 years. Just have a feeling the Licht knows more about Mayfield than Rod Munch and Chris Long. Meanwhile every training camp incompletion or interception will be fodder for more ridiculous criticism about a guy who Sports Illustrated rated the best college QB of this century.

  42. Andy Says:

Just keep listening to the media fans..you people are starting to remind me of why I quit cheering for the Browns when they dumped Baker for that trashWatson..and now..he proved you and everyone else wrong…again..and you all still fail to trust him..very disappointing..very..but..as in the past..you will all be eating your words again…smh…GO BAKER !!!

    …..

  43. GoneGator Says:

Clickbait title Joe (you know your audience -lol)… Anything with Baker or Kyle in the subject line is guaranteed to to keep the click$ coming while we bicker about the QBs.

Kyle has been/is everything you could ask for as a teammate and, for now, as a backup to Baker.

Baker is the starter. It’s his team, like it or not. The front office, coaches, offense and defense, young and old, and the vast majority of fans have spoken. Baker is our guy and we believe in him.

Aside from talking heads trotting out the same arguments based on stats alone or well worn narratives (Bakers been inconsistent year to year…monkey see monkey do reporting) the only people who really believe Baker is going to fail, or who will be rooting for him to suck, are delusional fans of our back up or ?.

Baker is better (arm talent, smarts, leadership, hunger, etc etc) than Goff, Tua, Goldilocks, etc. and we’ve got him on a bargain basement contract. After this season that’s all the monkeys will be talking about. To not consider the circumstances he’s been in, when comparing him to other QBs, is just lazy assed reporting or opinions.

Baker has a good chance, IMO, to be the 1st successful “franchise QB” the Bucs have had. Some of y’all are going to miss the bus if you don’t wake up soon 🤣

Btw – to me TB12 was a mercenary, a hired gun. I never looked at him as a real Buc. It was always a short term thing and more about him than the team. He needed/wanted to prove he didn’t need Belicheck to win a SB. 😳

  44. Kenton Smith Says:

I’ll give the pundits the credit that their credentials bring them. But I’ll trust the truth. An ESPN pundit a few weeks ago rationalized Baker “choking” by pointing out in his college football playoff defeat to the University of Georgia he’d coughed up a 31-14 lead. That champion Georgia team had allowed under 8 points per game to the best of the SEC that year. Mayfield carved them up. So our defense blew it. Although Baker wouldn’t ever blame them. He’d blame himself and be pissed that anybody would blame any of his teammates or coaches. I didn’t too much mind that one pundits opinion. But two other “pundits”sat nodding heads as number one pundit talked. So I’ve decided not to give the pundits the credit their credentials bring them anymore. I may highly respect the individual but its gotta be tough to fill up all those punditry minutes.

Even when he wasn’t that it was always a first half struggle with 1 minute to go, we could have won 11 games last year.

Winning 10 games is quite doable with the current roster. I have us winning 11 myself, and I think we might honestly beat that. The fact that we are again underestimated at 7.5 games by the media and Vegas is the laughable part.

  46. Joe Says:

Hope so! Joe’s copy editor professors who worked for the Chicago Tribune before teaching journalism and copy editing, who had Joe as a student before Al Gore invented the internet, taught Joe that “Headlines are supposed to grab your attention and pull you into the story.”

So if the headlines on this here site aren’t “bait” to get people to read, then Joe is failing to do his job.

  47. Joe in Michigan Says:

You can surely trust someone with “Trask” in their JBF handle to give you a factual, unbiased opinion. Right?

  48. Ex-Browns02 Says:

Not making the Super Bowl does not equal failure. The Bucs had multiple challenges last season with inconsistency on both sides of the ball, but brought it all together sufficiently to make a playoff run.

Biggest relief for this fan is that Canales is no longer here to bungle first-half play calling. I pulled out a lot of hair during the first half of our games last year. It’s difficult for an offense to succeed when hamstrung for half of a game.

Liam Coen is not going to cause hair loss. I’m confident that he’s concocted the right recipes for Mayfield to Bake!

  49. Drunk Bucs Fan Says:

LOL! He was “top 10” in a year where literally only 9 QBs started every game.

He was 18th in QBR, 20th in scoring, and 8th out of 9 in scoring and yards among those 9 QBs that started all 17 games, just barely edging out Sam Howell on that list.

Ooo, QBR the black box stat that thinks Gardner Minshew was better than CJ Stroud. Forgive me if I don’t treat it or anyone who quotes it as serious.

Your stats are a joke, as are your opinions. It’s hilarious that you list 20th in scoring like the bad rushing game is his fault. It’s also hilarious that you quote one of 9 guys to play all 17 like it’s a bad thing. Best ability is availability. For the record, he was 11th in ANY/A and as mentioned 9th in passer rating. Seems like playing those extra games just reflected his good play.

9th best TD percentage, 10th best Int Percentage, of those 9 QBs who started 17 he was 5th in Yards, 6th in TDs, and 3rd best in INTs.

like they’re shifting gears. Yaya, SirVocea, Braswell will tear it up!!
Our secondary looks top tier to these eyes
Our O-Line is far improved. Last year, we started a Patchwork line, due to injuries and retirements, and we were in salary cap hell. Cody Mauch was thrown into the fire and survived. He’ll be way better this year. Same as Goedeke. Bucky Irving will be a big help to White.
Naysayers GO AWAY.This Buc Train is going FULL STEAM THIS YEAR!!!

  57. Richard Says:

All the talk is about the 50 million plus a year quarterbacks right now and Baker is being ignored. There is also a lot of talk from the Bucs about how Baker is the heart of the team. If they somehow manage 11 or 12 wins Baker is definitely in the running for MVP based on expectations and making him the focus of the team.

Joe, don’t be a Homer. The Bucs are a middle-of-the-pack team. Baker is a gamer, he’s just not super talented. Definitely not the force multiplier like this team needs. Having lost Canales, I feel like they will regress a bit this year, so I think Long is spot on.

  61. Kenton Smith Says:

Oh yeah. Canales is a good guy. Great positive attitude. Checked alot of the boxes. But good riddance to him-we’ll be alot better than last year.

  62. BucFanforLife Says:

Maybe Baker and our Bucs are great, maybe they aren’t. We will only know for sure once the games are played. These desk jocks know as much as we know. If the Bucs end up stinking again, then oh well I’ve been through it before. Beer will still be served, football will still be played, and canons will still be fired (or at least I hope so). All I gotta say is GO BUCS!! Tammmmmmmpa… Baaaaaaaaay!
