Tristan Wirfs Dominant (Again)

July 15th, 2024

Still a large presence.

This is almost mind-blowing to Joe.

A guy who hadn’t played left tackle since he was a freshman at Iowa and who was so freaked out about being moved from right tackle to left tackle he had to seek counseling, completely kicked ass at pass blocking in his new position.

Tristan Wirfs was a red brick wall playing left tackle. In fact, the PFF tribe charted from where came pressures on Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield.

Turns out Wirfs was tied with San Francisco veteran Trent Williams for the lowest percentage of dropback snaps allowing pressure. Imagine what Wirfs might be like this year now that he’s learned how to play backwards (as in before at right tackle he used his individual hands and legs in opposite ways, like learning to play guitar left-handed).

(Oh, and ssssshhhhh… Joe doesn’t want you to get in trouble. Don’t speak in public Robert Hainsey’s low numbers in this chart. You are not allowed to say anything good about Hainsey. Remember, he is the root evil of our society and he is responsible for every bad thing that happens in our republic from climate change to the Ebola virus to insecure borders. Never, ever say anything positive about Hainsey or the mob will carry you away.)

I would expect Goedke to improve this year after having a year of experience at RT. “Bookends” for years to come anyone?

  2. Eric Says:

    Btw Joe,

His # isn’t that low compared to most of his peers lol. There’s 35 qbs and he only best 10 out of 35. Which puts him lower than worse than I’ve 70% of the league. It appears only low because compared to other positions apparently centers are pressured less almost always.

  3. Eric Says:

What surprises me just based on that chart is why we dint gave competition for Mauch when he had the worst rate at rg of anyone. TERRIBLE

  4. BucsFan Says:

The sooner Bucs ink up Tristan the cheaper it will be. Just give him 200 million for 7 years with a large signing bonus and be done with it, Bucs have to do it , so get it done.

  5. Hodad Says:

Joe, Hainsey is so good the Bucs used their first pick in the draft to replace him. No Hainsey is not the root of all things wrong with the Bucs. He’s a servicable center average at best. Joe shouldn’t be shocked if our run game improves, and Baker has a solid pocket to step into, becuase Hainsey will be watching from the sideline while Barton gets the job done. We went from average at center, to perhaps someone very special.

    @Eric

Because they used a 2nd round pick on Mauch and moved him from college left tackle to NFL right guard. They aren’t going to just throw that investment of time and resources away. C’mon.

Wirfs with a 12% and Donnie Smith with a 28%. Still think we should have kept Wirfs at right tackle and re-uped Donnie’s contract?

  7. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

An interesting question to me is what was Goedeke’s pressure rate at LG in 2023?

  8. Eckwood Says:

Is D Smith still unsigned ??

  9. BucsFan55 Says:

    RESIGN HIM ASAP

So, this was the biggest stat all season/offseason against Hainsey.

The Bucs ever since Arians brought in coach Joe Gilbert excelled at pass blocking.

Hainsey a 3rd year player with the team, his 2nd starting was 23rd in allowing pressures. We all know how piss poor he was blocking on 3rd or 4th and short.

I will give Mauch a 1-year pass, but Hainsey is proven to be horrible again.

  11. CallTheSaltTruck Says:

Joe’s post on Hainsey is once again misleading. His number is low compared to the other people on the Bucs line, but that is because he is the center. The Center is usually the ‘swingman’ on the line, moving to double whichever guard needs help, or getting help from a guard. Note that ALL centers have comparably low numbers and that 16%, as indicated by the color grade, is BAD for a center, compared to his peers.

Getting 16% when the league average is 12-13% means yes, you are sub-par.

Wirfs is a monster having a pressure rate that low at left tackle after switching sides.

  12. Dave Pear Says:

Hainsey sucked, sucks, and will suck, especially against the run. But at least he can play Matador at multiple positions.

    Stud!

  14. BucU Says:

Hainsey is a great guy but we can’t get to where we wanna go with him.
Simple as that. As far as Tristan WIRFS is concerned see BucsFan above.

  15. Saskbucs Says:

I think we are looking to get those percentages down to 15 or better across the line and I wanna believe that is attainable through the new guys and 1 more year of experience at the positions for LT, RG and RT.

  16. Defense Rules Says:

Hainsey’s an adequate backup Center, but he MIGHT prove to be considerably better at Left Guard. Plenty of competition for that opening in our OLine.

BTW Joe, looking at that chart, the Titans’ OLine must’ve been truly horrible last year. Their LT position was tagged with 43% pressures, and their 2 QBs took a total of 60 sacks (Levis 28 & Tannehill 32). They had a total of 8 Tackles log snaps at either LT or RT. Wow.

  17. BucVoyager Says:

I’d like to see Hainsey replaced as a backup that’s how terrible he was last year. Nothing like needing a yard and having the line blow up right over the QB. Happened way too many time last year.

  18. gotbbucs Says:

Yep, Joe, you’re right. Hainsey is at the very best somewhere around the 20th best pass blocking center in the NFL. Surely there’s a running blocking chart somewhere that says he’s in the bottom 3rd of that list too. No need to panic, I’m sure in another three or four years he’ll develop up into the middle of the pack.

People who’s livelihood depends on their ability to judge the roster decided it best to use our 1st round pick on a rookie center. Too bad they didn’t ask your opinion first. The hills that you choose to die on are sure interesting.
