Making Tacklers Miss

July 12th, 2024

Does he have the magic elixir?

Last summer, Joe remembers asking then-Bucs offensive coordinator Dave Canales an important question.

In 2022, the Bucs were downright turrible with yards after contact. Of course, the people who love to holler about the offensive line immediately blamed the offensive line (how original) for running backs’ production.

As Joe has said time and again, unless NFL strongman Roger Goodell and his henchman Kaiser Richie McKay changed rules that Joe is unaware of, running backs are actually allowed and encouraged to make tacklers miss and get yards after being hit.

Joe is unfamiliar with any NFL rule that requires running backs to hit the dirt the moment they are touched by a defender.

So Joe asked Canales what is the best way to improve a team’s YAC (yards after contact). Keep running the ball, Canales replied.

Well, Canales sure was a man of his word. He kept running. Unfortunately, that didn’t solve the issue.

So Joe is eager to see if new offensive coordinator Liam Coen can somehow coach up Rachaad White to follow holes. It baffles Joe how excellent White is making people miss in the passing game but inept making guys miss in the running game.

Sometimes, Joe wonders if an imposter is wearing White’s No. 1 on run plays.

Well if he don’t maybe Bucky does.

We need to swipe a browns assistant scout for running backs. Hopefully Bucky and White can get it together.

  3. Tony Says:

Yeah it would be nice if WE COULD MAKE TACKLERS MISS & NOT THAT WE’RE THE ONES MISSING TACKLES.

When your three interior O-linemen are waving capes instead of blocking, it’s tough to make someone miss while you’re taking the handoff and not fumbling. Compounding that defect are the data showing how Canalwater was determined to run Alstott up the gut all the time…..except it wasn’t Alstott.

Better IOL and an OC who wants to score rather than just pound the A-gap, should help.

Instead of running the ball to the right maybe they can mix it up and run left too. I’m sure White missed some holes and could’ve broken a few more tackles. But what I remember seeing over and over is run calls up the middle on 1st down every play when everyone knew it was coming. White got hit as he was getting the handoff. If he was so concerned about making someone miss as he secures the ball he fumbled then people would be upset at that. The blame should be equally placed on the predictable play call, the poor blocking by the interior OL and White. This year Baker wI’ll have the ability to check into a better play if he looks up and sees an 8 man box on an interior run play.

Let’s see, can make tacklers miss after catching the football and cannot make tacklers miss while being handed the football. What changes? Well, there are a number of variables for sure . And since I’m one of the holler’ers Joe alludes to, I would be amiss if I didn’t point out that in the catching the pass scenario in which he is able to make defenders miss, he isn’t relying on the blocking of the offensive line. It’s all him and his slippery skills. In the running scenarios, he is dependant on shoes favorite interior linemen which invariable get blown up and shoved around creating a non slippery situation. Time and time and time again.
    Skills are there… What changes.

@Joe drive your car with no wheels. Is it the engines fault or the lack of tires & rims?

  9. OR Buc Says:

Well at least he’s on a rookie contract and we didn’t hang onto playoff Lenny.

    Replacement now in waiting

Ol’ Boy — bravo. Way to nail it.

Interesting stats. Agree with Hodad too, thinking Bucky is going to be really good and make it happen. Go Bucky Go!

Disappointed seeing Leonards’s stats. He still hasn’t gotten a landing spot. Maybe the Cowboys… Noticed Dalvin Cook’s stats on the Twitter snippet. I didn’t realize he was on the Ravens now for 2024. Good for him and that could be the right fit for him.

    Watch Bucky!

All the running backs averaged about the same yards per carry. If one averaged significantly more than the other I would agree with your opinion of Whites running.

  15. ATLBUC Says:

As crazy as this might sound, White could learn some evasive running techniques from Irving

  16. ATLBUC Says:

As I remember last season White did a remarkable job making it to the 3 yard average that he had. There was contact in the backfield most of the time
