If Calijah Kancey Plays The Full Season

July 22nd, 2024

Impressive rookie stats.

In football, a stuff isn’t a giant burrito you get from a neighborhood watering hole after a night of pounding beers.

No, in football, a “stuff” is a stat where a defender tackles a ballcarrier at or behind the line of scrimmage. Last year as a rookie, Bucs defensive tackle Calijah Kancey proved to be one of the better stuffers in the league.

Based on the research by Sharp Football Analysis, Kancey was surprisingly strong.

A first-round pick last year, Calijah Kancey immediately contributed as a rookie, grabbing 11 run stuffs and 4 sacks.

Kancey recorded a stuff on 5.8% of his run defense snaps, which would have ranked 7th among defensive linemen if he played the 10 more snaps against the run needed to qualify.

So last year Kancey had 10 tackles for loss. For rookies, that was only second to YaYa Diaby’s 12, which led the NFL for rookies.

When Kancey came out of Pitt, all Joe heard was that he was mainly a pass rusher. Last year, missing virtually all of training camp with a calf injury, Kancey proved he can play run defense after a slow start.

Joe’s telling ya’ right now, this Kancey is going to be a beast.

WELL, as long as you’re BACK there (beHIND the line of scrimmage)…

Shhh! Joe! He is gonna be our secret weapon! Hope the flacons are not here.

    Go Bucs!

Normally it takes DT’s a couple of years to become dominant. Kancey is on that assent. The scary part is he has an edge rusher YaYa to develop with, not to mention Braswell, and Tykee Smith. A lot of good young up, and coming talent on this football team. Can’t wait for it to begin.

We have almost always had the horses to win.
The mindset (primarily) and the coaching (close second) have always been our downfall.
We definitely have the horses this year, and the mindset appears to be good as well. I’m on the fence on the coaching but very optimistic about the whole picture.
Can’t wait for the first snap!

Search Kancey film breakdown on YouTube and watch some of the really good videos. It’s not all great. Some are concerned about his run defense but all are really impressed by his hand usage, his quick first step and pass rush moves. It’s good to get some unbiased non Bucs fan analysis sometimes.

    100% Correct

    Gap-shooter was somewhere in there

    Kancey gives me the warms.

It’s going to be interesting to watch DEs Trice (Huskies, Falcons 3rd round pick)vs Braswell develop and see who looks better. I thought going into the draft that the Bucs would take Trice in the 2nd or 3rd round. I had Trice ahead of Braswell. Not by much but I loved Trice’s FBIQ, production, speed to power and his relentless motor. I like what I’m hearing so far from OTAs about Braswell’s Heavy hands and power so far. I really hope the Bucs got this pick right.
People were too busy laughing at ATL’s first pick to realize they had a really good draft. Have too many good Qbs is never a bad idea. Who know how well Cousins comes back from that injury. Jets show everyone last year how quickly things can go south at that crucial position.

I read more than a few reports on his 1st step quickness and football IQ in manipulating blockers and then shedding them to get to the ball carrier and QB. His ability to break down film and desire to be the best is something that can’t be taught.

  12. ballwasher61 Says:

And I agree that we have a young up and coming team that contend as they grow.

Just read Shaq Barrett is retiring today, guess our front office knows what they’re doing.
