Payback Planned

Jamel Dean

So soon after starting cornerback Jamel Dean pulled down an interception yesterday following a tipped pass, he absorbed a bit of public humiliation from his head coach.

Todd Bowles, who has been very close with Dean since he was drafted in 2019, playfully told media that he’d have to get dean drug tested.

It was sarcastic nod toward Dean’s streak of 29 consecutive games without an interception.

Today, Joe asked Dean if he knew what Bowles said. “I heard about right after Bowles said it,” Dean replied, shaking his head. “I’ll give it back to Bowles in a meeting when he makes a mistake.”

Yes, word travels fast at One Buc Palace. Players often know what coaches say in the media.

Joe didn’t talk to Dean about his dubious streak, but Joe knows other players are aware of it and he gets needled about it at times.

It’s going to one fired up Bucs sideline this season when/if Dean breaks the streak.

Whatever he tests positive for, give him more!

  2. SB~LV Says:

Dean will have 3 picks this year

As long as this doesn’t turn into Dean actually getting tested and popped for something lol, I’m all about the trash talking motivation.

Watts was interviewed and he absolutely gushed about the speed of the defense. He said they are so much faster, it’s almost incomparable to last year’s team.

You all remember when our defense had RIDICULOUS speed (2002).

BTW, I’m really starting to like Watts. Hard worker, dedicated father, bleeds pewter and crimson. I hope he breaks out.

He’ll get’em, but I will say part of that streak is due to QBs somewhat avoiding Dean, but they’ll throw those screens in front of him and I always cringe for the WR

3 INT range for Dean this year sounds about right. He’s capable of getting more. The stellar picks he had off of Rodgers, Dean attributed to good film study. Does Dean underestimate opponents and take weeks off in his film study? What level of commitment does Dean put towards his film?

Unfortunately, I don’t think you just magically wake up one morning at 27 years old and suddenly you can cleanly catch footballs.

  8. Paratrooper Buc Says:

Let’s hope it’s a positive sign for things to come from Dean. He has grown as a CB but he needs to get INT or pick 6’s to scare opponents.

  9. Big Red Says:

Rooting for Dean but I suspect we will feel a significant void in our secondary unless our pass rush improves substantially.
