Mike Evans And Chris Godwin

July 20th, 2024

Joe came across a stat-geeky graphic this summer that blew Joe’s mind.

This data was cobbled together by the PFF tribe so, there’s a built-in element of BS here. But hey, play along, eh?

Since 2010, that would be 14 years of data, Bucs receivers Mike Evans and Chris Godwin have been lethal. Very few receivers were better at not just getting first downs, but getting chunks of yards, too.

From 2014-2021 the Bucs largely had a dangerous offense. From 2016-2021 the Bucs had coaches that believed in pushing the ball downfield with long passes, too. Coincidence? Hardly.

In the final year of currently unemployed Byron Leftwich’s reign of terror at offensive coordinator, and last year under former offensive coordinator Dave Canales, only once in a while did the Bucs offense look dangerous.

Of course, last year in the few times Canales unleashed the offense, it was damn potent. The wins over Green Bay and Philadelphia spring to mind.

Could it be as simple as much of the last two years, the Bucs simply were not playing to their strengths? Evans and Godwin, just based on the intel in the graphic below, were built to race souped-up Ford Mustangs.

If the Bucs want to score points, instead of handing the ball off constantly to one of the league’s worst running backs the past two seasons, try unleashing the hounds more and getting the ball to Evans and Godwin downfield as often as possible.

That is, if the Bucs value points.

I’m neither pro nor negative Canalas. IMO the verdict is still out. He was successful last year but as successful as possible? He did some good things and he did some bad things and this thread points out his most glaring error.

Why did Canalas feel the need to experiment so much with CG14? Why did he need Mrs Godwin to remind him what an effective weapon her hubby is? I can’t really lay that on Baker. He didn’t move CG around and design the route trees for these guys.

I have a strong feeling that Coen is going to be an upgrade, as is the OL, and the D seems to be getting stronger as well as younger. Let’s see how the Bucs use their “dynamic duo” this season. They might put up some amazing numbers.

Canals said he had ALWAYS wanted to be an OC and call plays but he jumped ship for money before he even stuck his toe in the water. Then he snatched some of our players and coaches for a life raft. I will never forgive him.

    14 years of data Koala

After re-watching the Green Bay game, Coen needs to set up the run by passing first, to Godwin, not Evans. Pass first to Godwin in the slot and run off that.

    14 years of data Koala

    ^^^^

It’s a 14-year data review. Koala was saying Evans has only played 10 years, so other players on that list have more data on length of play (ie Julio Jones).

    IT’S AVERAGES
10 years or 14 years doesn’t matter in this study. If it did, Puka Nacua and other 1-2 year players wouldn’t make the list. If you look at the X and Y, it’s basing on averages. The study is kind a garbage. Puka was a rookie. Defenses will adjust for him next year. The vets in the upper righthand corner are impressive, though. I knew Calvin Johnson was a stud but Michael Thomas? Too bad he was always injured.

  8. Mickman Says:

10 years of data, rally, so now puke Nadia has ten years of stats…one year does not mean jack, and Calvin Johnson has been out of the league for what 4 years?

    What a bs report

I thought this was an article about wide receivers?
You almost made it thru without dumping on Rachaad again.
We get it Joe, you think Rachaad sucks as a running back – 😂.

Shaq Barrett just announced his retirement.

That chart is impossible to read on my phone.

Agree Fred difficult to read and some stats are questionable. Antonio Brown up there.

Vincent Jackson was special glad I was able to see him play in Tama.

  15. Oddball Says:

Looks like the state of Virginia with little tiny football helmets scattered about. And apparently Chesapeake Bay has been renamed Mike Evans among others. Who knew…

  16. TampabayDJ Says:

This is a garbage stat for nerds.. Give me real stats that actually count. Go Bucs

Unsure about Canales since he was only OC one year. Plus, now hearing more about him on here and revealing statements from some team members, he was more of a rah rah guy than aggressive about the plays. Mike and Chris have so much talent and Coen will use them to their maximum strengths. Can’t wait!

Amen! He deserves a lot of credit too for this stat streak as a very close third Buccaneer on this chart.

  20. Dave Pear Says:

Canalwater was really bad. Did some things well with the QB – but stuck with the things that didn’t work way too long and didn’t stick with what was working. Puzzling.

Whelp. That’s Carolina’s problem now, where nothing worked and won’t work.

The Bucs put out a graphic back in 2021 I believe about Mike Evans, and one of the remarkable lesser know things was the number / % of receptions for a 1st down. Pretty sure he had been 1st or 2nd in the league for a few years at that.

Dude is a stud. So is Godwin. Super dependable and does the dirty work. LFG
