“Looking Sideways At Some Of The Older Guys”

July 27th, 2024

Bucs general manager Jason Licht (lefts) chats with assistant GM Mike Greenberg.

Telling stuff from Buccaneers Ring of Honor general manager Jason Licht.

(For those new to this website, Licht is not in the Ring of Honor. However, the guy won three consecutive division titles after winning a Super Bowl while playing with a lot less Monopoly money than his peers. That’s historic success and Joe thinks Team Glazer should wake up.)

Today, the Bucs released a very cool Hard Knocks-style video documentary focused on their scouting team. It pulls back the curtain a bit on how the Buccaneers make draft picks, including clips of predraft interviews with current rookies Graham Barton and Tykee Smith.

Most of the footage was shot at the NFL Scouting Combine in late February.

In a meeting at One Buc Palace around that time frame, Licht addressed his front office team.

“Your draft last year [in 2023] was unbelievable. Set the tone. These guys are going to be unbelievable leaders,” Licht said.

Then Licht dropped a gem about his 2023 class — and the men around them.

“You know, you probably already heard the stories. Some of the [2023 rookies] how they kind of were already looking sideways at some of the older guys that weren’t doing the right thing,” Licht said. “And they already know. If we can do that again …”

So which “older guys” on the Bucs’ last year “weren’t doing the right thing?” Are they still on the roster?

Joe wonders whether not “doing the right thing”refers to minor work habits kinds of things or major infractions.

Joe smells Devin White, and possibly a former member of the secondary, among a few others. But it certainly could be more. So much goes on behind the scenes with an NFL team.

And keep in mind the Bucs were a rather unified club that stuck together through very tough times last season.

    Is Licht 6′ 7″ or is Greenberg 5′ 3″?

  2. Anonymous Says:

My first thought was White as well and maybe Vita from Kancey

And this is why GMs and HCs and other coaches don’t like to be too candid with the media … they read far too much into a casual comment. JL is probably still shaking his head asking himself ‘Why did I open my mouth on that one?’

Joe disagrees. Teams practically beg fans — and media — to live and breathe the team 24/7. That’s what drives revenue to the clubs and builds fan bases that can’t get enough of everything. It’s the fuel that pays all the big salaries, Licht’s included. Licht gets this. So what if fans and media dissect a comment. Doesn’t change Licht’s world at all –Joe

You noted Devin White and ‘possibly a former member of the Secondary’. Kinda seems like the only 2 former members of the 2023 Secondary Joe are (1) Carlton Davis and (2) Ryan Neal. Since your statement was singular, I’m assuming it was one or the other. My money’s on Ryan Neal, but it sure would be nice to unpack this & provide a few details.

Consistent , inconsistency , in performance whether it be during practices or games, and consistently finishing barely above .500 season after season , is not and cannot be the goal for consistent contenders for conference championships and beyond, being consistently consistent is the key, know what I mean?

Maybe Logan hall and jts and guys that been here before them

  6. SenileSenior Says:

Just as Evans and David are beginning to get some recognition for their accomplishments, so is Licht. We who watch closely see the excellence shown over time.

    Go Bucs!

  7. Drunkinybor Says:

I just watched that and it has to be about devin stinking white. Because they were just talking about how great a leader YaYa has turned out to be.

JL and his people definitely have the formula for producing success through the draft! And he’s doing the right thing to unload the dead weight- going along for the ride type players! This season should be exciting!

  9. Badbucs Says:

Did they get rid of them all?

  10. Pickgrin Says:

I think you have zeroed in on the correct culprits Joe – which is why they are no longer on the team.

Between Diva White’s selfish lack of concern for his team and teammates – Neal being gifted a starting spot without merit and Davis appearing high as a kite every time you see him – there were probably a few rookies last year thinking to themselves – “WTF is this BS?”

  11. Saskbucs Says:

Great video behind the scenes of the draft. Who is the south Florida UFA they really wanted at the end of the video? He mentioned DB… Deloach is Florida but LB… Funderbunk?

Fantastic video! This is what it is about. Re-watching Graham, Braswell, and others again on draft night was heartwarming and exhilarating. Love seeing these kids get their NFL dreams fulfilled. Their emotions say it all along with One Buc Place enjoyment. Sounds like Bowles and the coaches aren’t going to put up with non-functional players this season by Licht’s comment.

  13. Eckwood Says:

Kinda sounds like they are hoping college kids can fix a Coaching / Leadership problem ?

Joe is spot on. If one reads closely and reads between the lines and listens closely and (figuratively speaking) listens between the lines. People will tell you things they don’t even realize.
