Jamel Dean Breaks Interception Streak; Todd Bowles Finds The Humor

July 28th, 2024

Cornerback Jamel Dean.

So Jamel Dean picked off Baker Mayfield at practice today.

It appeared to be a pass deflected by Lavonte David and Dean flashed strong awareness and hands.

The latter isn’t common for the sixth-year corner who is riding a 29-game streak without an interception.

Todd Bowles’ reaction after practice? He suggested foul play.

“I’m going to get Dean drug tested because he usually doesn’t catch them,” Bowles said. “So we’re going to see if he’s been on that stuff or not.”

Bowles got serious and added that Dean and fellow starting cornerback Zyon McCollum came to training camp in great shape and Bowles praised them consistently after each play reviewing what they’ve seen.

It’s a critical season ahead for Dean. It’s his first as a true No. 1 cornerback and the Bucs will lose patience with Dean quickly if he can’t step up his game to match his huge salary.

Still think about the Lions game where he dropped a pick 6

  2. Hodad Says:

Wow 29 games without a pick. How’s he still a starting corner in the NFL?

I’m curious Joe. Other than Winfield, do you ever see the DBs working the jugs or playing catch after/during practice? You’d think, after a 29 game streak with NO ints, that a light bulb might turn on

  4. JimBobBuc Says:

Dean should hang with the McCollums and hit their JUGGS machine every night.

What a very relaxed, humorous and out of character comment for Bowles to make. If Bowles feels this good…….

Dean has been our best corner despite not having INTs . He breaks up many passes.
But , I don’t blame it on Dean or any other CB for our Bucs. If you watch them play , they never turn their heads to play the ball . That’s coaching 101.. Go back and watch Ronde play. He ALWAYS turned his head and played the ball as if it were thrown to him. Don’t understand why these corners are taught to run in stride without finding the ball in the air.
    Hopefully that changes. Go Bucs

Has anyone ever played the way Ronde played. He is pretty much a unicorn in his successful style of play.

That’s actually a funny line by Bowles! Who knew he had any sort of personality!?!

TampabayDJ – Barber is a HOF player. No one thinks Dean is anywhere close to that level.

Also, pretty much everyone on those greatest of all time Bucs defenses played that way. That came down from Dungy and Monte, that the defense wasn’t just there to stop the other offense from scoring, but to score points themselves, and they were aggressive about it. That’s why you’d see things like Sapp lateralling the ball to Brooks after a turnover. The defense was always looking to score.

Which is amazing since it was mostly a zone defense, yet incredibly aggressive without blitzing. Bowles defenses are aggressive in terms of play calling (well, used to be when Arians was here) but don’t really have a killer attitude in terms of trying to score. If someone gets a turnover, half the time they just take a knee the second anyone gets close to them. That’s from the head coach, more worried about screwing up than making plays.

But, with that said, those late 90s and early 00s, those were literally some of the all-time greatest NFL defenses ever, and the 2002 defense is absolutely the best passing defense in the history of the league, and an extremely strong case can be made it’s the best defense ever. So comparing that to today, it’s a bit much.
