How Much Better Can Tristan Wirfs Be?

July 19th, 2024

Left tackle Tristan Wirfs.

Did Tristan Wirfs start all over as an NFL player last year? If so, look out.

Despite “this Joe” howling in protest, the Bucs decided to play with matches and moved the game’s best right tackle and a guy who seemed headed for the Pro Football Hall of Fame to left tackle, where Wirfs hadn’t played since he was a freshman at Iowa.

The move so freaked out Wirfs he admitted to seeking counseling.

But Wirfs proved to be just fine and Joe was able to breathe again. Depending on who you talk to or what source you have for offensive linemen, Wirfs played his best ball last year in the final few games and into the playoffs.

That seems reasonable since he had to learn how to do everything backward with the position change. By the time Thanksgiving came around, Wirfs apparently had left tackle down. He was dominating. Again.

So since Wirfs found the sweet spot in his game, that ought to carry over to this season, no? Will the best of Wirfs be seen this year?

It will help to have actual football players to his right blocking with him, instead of El Matadors Grande’ waving their capes desperately at the raging bulls. It’s hard to play your best when you hear three guys to your right all yell “Ole’ !” In unison.

If the Bucs go deep in the playoffs, it will be mainly because of the revamped OLine and Secondary.

I expect Wirfs to break the bank with his play in 2024…

It would serve the FO well to get a new deal completed ASAP & not wait until 2024 plays out.

I expect something close to 6yrs/$155M w/ $75 in practical guarantees with an out after 3yrs…Get Wirfs/Bucs marriage locked up until his age 29 season at minimum…Age 32 if he completes full contract – which is assuming he plays like Trent Williams over that the stretch.

Wirfs is the best player on the team. Simple as that.

His ceiling is best offensive lineman in football – and he’s almost already there. Just think last year when he got injured and had a couple of so-so games by his standards – remove those and he’s probably already the top rated offensive lineman in football. Even the dopes at ESPN had him as the #4 tackle in football (left or right), and they don’t care two cent about the Bucs unless Brady is here, so that’s telling.

That’s why I don’t get the Bucs not locking him up already. He’s never going to go down in price, so the longer you wait to resign him, the more expensive he’s going be. It was the same thing with Winfield – you should lock up your future HOF’ers as soon as you can since the price on them never goes down (early-mind career).
