Giants Seemed To Really Like Graham Barton And Tykee Smith

July 31st, 2024

Big Blue liked Tykee Smith, too.

Well, this is why “Hard Knocks” can be excellent TV — if teams use their noggins.

So the “Hard Knocks” currently running on HBO focuses on the Giants offseason.

In one scene, it showed how the Giants color coded certain draft picks. The color codes, per Warren Sharp by way of @Doug_Analytics, have specific meanings.

Blue: all-around good leader, teammate, person
Red: medical concerns
Purple: character concerns
Pink: undersized/measurement concern
Grey: multiple positions

So of the Bucs’ draft picks, only two had blue labels, per the Giants’ personnel staff. They were Graham Barton and Tykee Smith.

That seems to fit. Barton is a high-character guy. And fans saw in the recent edition of the Bucs’ “In the Current” that Bucs’ senior Bucs personnel executive Byron Kiefer made a passionate defense of Smith for having all the qualities teams crave in a team-first guy.

So what the Giants thought of those two backs why the Bucs were so high on both players.

It’s good to know other teams though that highly of Barton and Smith’s character, too.

    That episode of the current was really good. We have a great group of scouts. How Spytek isn’t a GM somewhere is beyond me. We struck gold with those two picks. Having watched both their pressers the last couple of day’s I’m even more impressed with these two. Add in Irving, JMac this, and last year are the kind of drafts that make championships.

    @Hodad

    Yep hope so. I would’ve considered both of them. I was torn on McMillan because both him & I think Ed’s son (Christian’s brother) Luke was still available, too! I would’ve considered either one. Culp was another I would’ve considered, too! I knew who Klein was just never really watched alot of him. Knew the LB from there (Knight).

    Am I not seeing gray next to Smith?? Either way, Go Bucs !

    Giants is an organization I would not put much faith in player personnel evaluation. Drafted and overpaid Daniel Jones…. that organization is one big pile of mess. Will finish with another losing record this year.

    @Joe

    Smith name is grey. They thought he was undersized.

  6. Conte Piscatelli Says:

    So perhaps worth noting that McMillan wasn’t flagged as injury concern. I was lead to believe he slipped because of his injury history

    Smith = gray = multiple positions.
    Probably meaning he can play safety but possibly corner in certain defenses. Like if he plays nickel for Bowles D, that needs a player who’s tough and can tackle as well as cover. I think he’s probably the perfect guy to draft for that position in thatnepund for the Bucs.

  8. Rod Munch Says:

    Yeah, Smith is tagged gray. I assume because he could be a safety or nickel.

    But these are the same people that thought Daniel Jones was a franchise QB, so I don’t really put much stock into their opinion.

  9. Dude Says:

    Yea, if the Giants were actually good at drafting I’d give this more credit, but they let Jerry Reese & Dave Gettleman set that team back 2 years with every draft they respectively presided over. They’ve been rebuilding their OL since Coughlin & Manning were still there.

    How much you wanna bet in every year since 2018 they had Baker Mayfield tagged in pink as well???🫢🫢🫢
