Gentle Bucs Treatment Of Baker Mayfield

July 15th, 2024

“Hey, Bake, it’s always all good.”

Hey, Baker Mayfield, “Do you ever wish, like, Bruce Arians would walk through that door and chew me out, just like call me a dumb motherfuc*er?”

Mayfield was hit with that question this week.

It came during his visit to Pardon My Take.

“A good ass-chewing is good for everybody every once in a while. Everybody needs one,” Mayfield replied. “You might not like it but you need it.”

Interesting to Joe, Mayfield was asked when he last got ripped into by coaches. Mayfield paused as if he couldn’t think of a time and then didn’t reference last season. Instead, he wanted more clarification as to the extreme nature of getting chewed out by coaches.

Eventually, Mayfield talked about a jarring teardown he got as a rookie in Cleveland from then-offensive coordinator Todd Haley.

Mayfield spoke about 2023 Bucs offensive coordinator Dave Canales was ridiculoulsly optimistic at all times. So Joe is sure Canales never chewed out Mayfield, and Joe finds it hard to believe Todd Bowles would have done that last season.

In fact, Mayfield said Bowles isn’t a yeller but does have “sly sh*t-talking behind the scenes.”

Mayfield said his reaction to Canales, among other teammates’, was that Canales was not being genuine because he was 100 percent upbeat. But since Canales never wavered, Mayfield said, players respected Canales deeply and the style worked.

New Bucs offensive coordinator Liam Coen is a different cat altogether. How Mayfield will be handled this season will be different and that could be better — or worse.

Regardless, Mayfield seems to want to have his ass chewed out once in a while when he screws up, and there’s a great chance Coen or Bowles go there at some point this season.

If not, perhaps someone indeed willc all Arians and ask him to do the honors. Joe is sure Arians would be happy to oblige. Or maybe Tom Moore has one last freakout in him.

Awesome article, Joes. Cue the stooges from The Club to derf all over it.

    Learned a Lot Today …

    1. “A good ass-chewing is good for everybody”

    2. “Mayfield seems to want to have his ass chewed out once in a while when he screws”

    3. “Canales never chewed out Mayfield”

… You wrote it, not me.

  3. Dave Pear Says:

Seeing old Tom Moore have a freak out would be epic. I sure hope someone rolls a camera if it happens.

  4. KABucs Says:

If Moore freaks too much, better have a paramedic nearby.

  5. KABucs Says:

85 year olds need to take it easy

  6. Craig Says:

Canales sure got a lot of mileage out of Baker, without chewing him a new one. Maybe Baker is talking big, but will butt heads with Cohen.

That will be hard on the Bucs because hot Toddie is in love with Baker and may create other waves against Cohen.

Too early to tell but we will soon see all the drama of a Bucs season. It is getting closer daily.

Dave Pear, your constant bashing of Trask is awfully childish. Did he take your lunch money or something?

Canales is the next Tony Robbins. He’s a positivity life coach that rich bimbos buy. (Man) ” Dave, what’s your philosophy?” ( Dave) Pete taught me to smile.” (Man) ” Dave the Bucs have been losing (Dave) ” Pete at the Seahawks said losing is a teacher. Pete would hug us and hold hands. Thats whay Pete taught me.” (Man).” Let’s just talk Bucs.” (Dave) ” Hard to talk Bucs without remembering Pete, and what the Seahawks organization taught me. Pete is really the reason why I mention the Bucs on occasion.

Very interesting that the players were a bit suspicious of Canales early on. Canales seemed genuine to me from his first press conference but it’s a different thing to be around it hours every day. I’ve been in locker rooms with guys I didn’t like right away. Too upbeat at all times, but unless they are a fool or a dic*, you do get used to them and start to respect it. It’s not easy to be positive everyday.

  10. David Says:

You can respect Canales, but to say it worked is massively overstating it. The O was atrocious the vast majority of the year. They were lucky to be a horrible Carolina team at the end of the season and make the playoffs

  11. Dave Pear Says:

To the emergent member of the club with the too long name — I don’t bash Trashk. I bash the tards that goo all over themselves about him being the rightful Bucs starter. LOL

    @Craig says

What are you even talking about? Baker has worked with Cohen before in St.Louis and was asked how he felt about Cohen being OC with Baker giving the Bucs front office the thumbs up. Do some research bud.

  13. Defense Rules Says:

    Dave Pear … ‘I don’t bash Trashk.’

If you’re NOT bashing him, then spell his name properly Dave. Only 9 starting QBs made it through all 17 games last year; and yes, Baker was 1 of them. Still, there’s a very good chance that we’ll be needing Kyle before this season’s over.

  14. Defense Rules Says:

KABucs … ’85 year olds need to take it easy’.

I’d be willing to bet that Tom Moore has forgotten more about football than any of us will ever know. Last year was his 45th year coaching in the NFL, 5 of those with the Bucs. Looks like he’s the last man standing from BA’s original offensive coaches. What a treasure to have on our coaching staff.

This was a great article. Baker said a lot. See, Bowles may be quiet but he is the sly silent guy to watch for. We all know someone like that we may have worked with or for. I don’t want to use the word manipulative; but maybe crafty, tricky, influential…

Drunkinybor says: “Canales is the next Tony Robbins.” Thank you so much for the laugh this morning! All in all, it sounds like a good balance of coaches. But sort of like when you are young and you go to dad instead of mom because you know dad will say yes when mom already said no.

Yes, let’s see what Moore and Coen say and do this season. It’s going to be a fun year!
