Fight Talk From Todd Bowles

July 24th, 2024

Linebacker K.J. Britt

Day 1 of training camp today is still underwear football with hitting not permitted, but Todd Bowles seemed to see something this morning that makes him think a firestorm is coming very soon.

Asked about starting inside linebacker K.J. Britt, the man who replaced Devin White late last season and will be the Day 1 starter in September, Bowles talked about Britt’s leadership.

It’s loud. It’s intense. It’s nonstop. And Joe suspects Britt has cranked up the volume and intensity now that he’s the unquestioned vocal leader of the defense.

“He’s probably the most talkative guy on the field,” Bowles said. “Hopefully, and I hope this never happens in camp, if they get into a fight, I’m pretty sure it’s probably going to be him because he does most of the talking about it. And we got to keep a good eye on that.”

Joe’s been around the NFL a long time and doesn’t recall a head coach sort of predicting a fight involving a specific player on Day 1 of training camp.

Joe suspects Bowles absolutely loves how Britt is bringing a lot of juice and is sure to inflame those around him.

The head coach will be happy to dance that line as long as nobody gets hurt.

Enjoy hearing about Coach Bowles talking about the players. It sounds like Britt will hold other players accountable. Bowles saying they will have to keep a good eye on it made me laugh. Wait until the season begins! Could be some turbulence there. Loving it!

More physical and meaner OL and now the same thing is true in the LB room as well? Gotta love the way this team is shaping up. My biggest fear now is injuries but if Trask is half as good as his “boys” here suggest the Bucs should be all right.

Dude is beefy, if he can get his coverage skills better, watch out

I thought that the 2021 was a travesty. Said it at the time. Seemed like Licht was so caught up in bringing all the SB roster back that he drafted for special teams. (IMO you draft for potential starters and put them on STs).

Britt stood out as the poster child of that strategy. His scouting report tells of a smart, aggressive leader with severe athletic deficiencies. Projected as an average backup, unable to stay with running backs, and best used if at all on early downs.

Now look at him. Still smart. Very aggressive. A talkative leader. But ability is on the low end. We all hope he does well, to use joes favorite word. But we aren’t blind, and we are concerned.

Wonderful if he can produce on all three downs. History and experience say we should look for more talent.

Hardy Nickerson v the late mr. Mccants.

No disrespect intended, this is a serious business.

If it’s jts or some of the other underachieving guys involved theire. I want em to grow, not go backwards from whatever happens.

Looks like Tristan Wirfs has been practicing today too which is great! So much for the hold out

  9. David Says:

Love it!! Just worried about his speed when necessary to go beyond the tackles.

  10. Rod Munch Says:

I just hope Britt spent all summer on speed and agility drills.

  11. Stanglassman Says:

Lou-the good news is that they are already on the team. SirVocea Dennis will rotate in on long 3rd downs in Britt has problems. JJ Russel is a heck of a good player. Deloach is going to be exciting to watch this camp to see how well his skills translate to the NFL.

    @Stanglassman

The 4-2-5 look with a guy like Tykee/Izien playing the money back role like we tried with Deon Buchannon back in 2019, we’ve yet to find that player. I think we have several guys on the roster who aren’t starters that can potentially fill that role, question is are the smart & physical enough to give it legs. It’d be a dope wrinkle to see, and it’d make it easier to switch into our dime w/o subbing, and the blitz opportunities/looks would be endless.

It could be my imagination but aren’t TB’s press conferences more interesting these days? I absolutely loved what he said in the meeting about how he didn’t want players just attempting to get on the team. He told them he wanted players who would do their best FOR the team. He even said some other great “fight” words. He sounds stoked, to me, instead of drab. GO BUCS!

Britt had a 4.76 40 and LVD had a 4.65 40. Britt was also similar splits in 20 yard shuttle and 3-cone vs LVD. He isn’t THAT much slower

  15. John Cecilia Says:

That’s what we need, some toughness, finally beat down the 29ers

  16. Ian Hart Says:

@Dude by far the most intriguing thing to see going into the regular season for me is the versatility on defense. With Whitehead, Winfield and yet another swiss army knife player like Tykee, they can do whatever the hell they want from blitz packages in the secondary on either side of the ball and if they’re smart about calling the defensive plays offenses sliding protection from one side to the other won’t mean a damn thing

  17. garro Says:

I will hope that Todd secretly does not want any players who will not be in the middle of the first fight of camp. I’m hoping it will involve Tyreek Hill and some of his Dolpins buddies against our entire team. Jets would be fine too but I hope it’s Thug reek.

    Go Bucs!
