“Fat” Mike Evans Learned A Lesson

July 29th, 2024

Mike Evans’ rookie look.

So in addition to re-sharing yesterday how his wife might have saved Bucs fandom from a deep depression, Mike Evans also talked about a great and painful lesson he learned working against former Bucs cornerback Mike Jenkins.

Evans was on NFL Network after practice with retired six-time Pro Bowl Bucs star Gerald McCoy and Sara Walsh from One Buc Palace. McCoy recalled his surprise to see that Evans was “fat” as a rookie arriving in Tampa.

McCoy recalled being stunned that a fat receiver was the same guy who tore up college football during the 2013 season.

Evans laughed and agreed with McCoy. Evans said he had money in his pocket as a new NFL player and loved to eat — and it caught up to him in a hurry.

Per Evans, at his first spring practice with the Bucs, in his first rep on the field, he ran a route against Jenkins and tore his hamstring “the worst I ever did in my whole career.” I was out like six or seven weeks.

“I learned to take care of my body after that,” Evans said.

Evans added that he was up over 240 pounds as a rookie. That was following weighing in at 231 at the NFL Scouting Combine.

I knew Mike was a big dude, but not that big. What a career!

  2. A Bucs Fan Says:

Bucs were close to Kelvin Benjamin 2.0

Never had really noticed extra weight on Evans. Possibly because he is so tall and has done so well throughout.

It sounds like the whole team has learned to take care of their bodies. Better for on the field and better for their own future off the field.

Mike might be less than 231 now.

Would like to see him duplicate Jerry’s workout.
Would make for a good tv story

A Bucs Fan – thats a pretty good comparison. Benjamin was really good his first few yrs too, especially his first yr altho Evans I think is quite a bit more fluid and athletic naturally and still has really good long speed, better leaper, more of those fast twitch muscles. Benjamin was always kind of a plodder from the jump and was super stiff, but yeah no way Evans has the career he has if remained on the dough boy side

    Yeah, now he’s phat.

I’m looking forward to the Bucs proving the National prognosticators all wrong AGAIN, with another NFC South title and make a deep run in post season.

Dang I don’t remember him starting his career injured, But that’s probAbly the same hammy that has given him problems for years!

In Mike’s rookie year, I honestly thought they’d eventually move him to TE, because rarely do guys get into better shape when they age – and I thought he might ballon up to like 260. If he did, I wonder what would have happened? He’s got the frame, in terms of size, to be huge. Just think of Mike was a monster TE who is just beating people up.

Anywho, last year, Evans looked the best I’ve ever seen him. I thought he looked faster and quicker and slimmer than ever. Not sure if that’s true, but it was really impressive, and it’s why I’m annoyed they only resigned Mike for a couple of years. I think he’s going to be lite for another 4-years before finally falling off a bit. I’d have given him a full 5-year deal to lower that year cap – then be really happen when he’s still getting 1200 yards and 12 TDs in 3 years.

Go back to Evans as a rookie, he looks big, really big. I wouldn’t be shocked if he was over 240 at some points that year. He never looked out of shape or anything, to be sure, he just looked almost like a TE out there at times. It’s not a knock at all, to be sure.

Give me a “fat” Mike Evans any day of the week! That ain’t fat, that’s muscle! I’m 6’3″ and weigh 205, and no one calls me fat because I ain’t. Mike is in “lean and don’t mess with me” shape 💪
