Energy Orders For The Defense

July 6th, 2024

So Todd Bowles and his crew not only are good with defensive celebrations, they’re sometimes demanded.

This was a topic when manbeast defensive tackle Vita Vea joined the Green Light podcast. Vea recalled being scolded for not giving fans what the love — and apparently what teammates need.

“Coach Larry Foote, he yelled at me one game because I got a sack and I didn’t celebrate. He was like  ‘Vita, we need that fuc*’n energy. [Get] started swimming again.’ I was like, ‘Alright.'”

So Foote, who has coached Bucs inside and outside linebackers, wants as much jack’em-up energy as he can get on the field. Interesting.

Devin White won’t be around this season to ride his pretend horse on the field. And trash-talking Carlton Davis is now in Detroit. Those are two guys who brought that kind of energy. ( Yes, Joe realizes one could argue White brought negative energy last year, too.) Departed Bucs sacks king Shaq Barrett loved an old school celebration, and teammates loved and rallied around him.

So given what Foote had to say, Joe wonders what Bucs will be encouraged to bring maximum celebration on the field this season.

Perhaps Calijah Kancey and Yaya Diaby will be encouraged to step out of their rookie shells and release their emotions more. And Joe firmly expects more than a few rib-rattling hits from safety Jordan Whitehead to rile up the defense.

Best way to keep the D fresh is to keep them off the field.

JW, or keep them from scoring every drive cause I suck in desperation mode.

BM, Winston has a point, so do I.

    KT, thats cause yall sucl.

I love it when Vita runs the lawnmower after a sack.

My money’s on Ya Ya after listening to him on the Bucs’ site when he was mic’d up during a recent practice. He never stops talking.

If Kancey and Yaya take the next step then lookout

I hate the celebrations – especially for one play when a team is otherwise getting their ass handed to them.

I personally despise all the antics that go on after a score. Really hate them after a routine play. Celebrations are fine. All the clown show stuff? Not my cup of tea. Would not have been in that mess at all when I was playing. A few fist pumps for sure. Jump up and down? Yup. Choreograph a skit? Not a chance! I have forgoten what coach said this but I have remembered it for many years “act like you”ve been there before”!

More intensity during actual game play? That would be wonderful!

    Go Bucs!

Khyree Jackson a tall rangy 6’4″ CB drafted by the Vikings in the 4th round and who several local Bucs commentators/mock drafters had the Bucs taking in the 4th round was killed today in a car crash.

    RIP – Khyree Jackson

The energy should come from the sack, not the celebration.

One of the reasons that Mike Evans is my favorite Buc of all time is how he goes about his busines. Super humble… scores a touchdown and just hands the ball to a fan. He’s been doing celebration BS more and more recently and now I am wondering if coaches have been requesting it.

I love the lawnmower action and would be great to see the Bucs do more of those subtle celebrations. It energizes everyone, especially we fans too. Many teams and players spend time on choreographing different celebrations in the red zone and on their own plays. Cody could improvise driving a tractor, combine harvester! Yes, show us the emotions.

On the other hand, I agree with Greg ^^. My favorite player is Mike Evans too. Love it that he scopes out the areas for whom he will hand off the TD ball to ahead of time. That is the kind of guy he is. Not all players need to show us their celebrations. That would be too much in one game.

Agree with Scott mack celebrations are great but don’t do.it when you are down 28 points with 3 minutes left in the game

Adding Whitehead is going to be a huge shot in the arm for the D. That other Safety from last season was TERRIBLE.

  14. Dave Pear Says:

BA’s Red Pen referred to “that other safety from last year.”

LOL! I have such PTSD from that stump I won’t say his name anymore either! He should be immediately forgotten……but he was so bad it’s impossible to totally delete the imprint.

Think the defense needs a big mouth leader that backs up his words. Think Warren Sapp.
