Day 2 Of Training Camp

July 25th, 2024

Joe’s got plenty coming from Day 2 of Bucs training camp. Practice wraps up before 11.

  1. Citrus County Says:

To all the Baker haters; You are now watching our Baker Mayfield transform into a Drew Brees variant. It is unlikely that Baker will get the 15 or 16 year benefit of having the same coach but it is my belief that if he can stay paired with Coen for his 3 year contract he will excel. If that happens then they will call the shots and that could lead to further longevity and the career comparisons with Brees.

  2. gofortheface30 Says:

Citrus – Even if he does become the franchise quarterback the Bucs have never had in it’s entire history, people will still complain. There is no pleasing everyone. It could be year 7 of Baker with 4k passing yards, and you’ll see comments from Gator fans about Kyle Trask not getting a fair shot, and under the illusion (delusion) that he should still be starting

  3. Couch Fan Says:

Baker has done nothing. He played poorly a majority of the season, ended the season terribly and now has 1 Training camp practice under his belt and he’s turning into Brees? It’s more likely the only thing we are watching is the Baker Cult setting Mayfield up for a hard fall.

  4. Couch Fan Says:

And the Baker Cult still talking about the back up. The guy lives rent free in your heads LMAO

  5. geno711 Says:

I tend to rate QB’s of different eras by where they ended up in passer rating compared to their peers of that era.

Passer rating Brees by the year:
    2001 48th
    2002 24
    2003 28
    2004 3
    2005 10
    2006 3
    2007 11
    2008 4
    2009 1

    2018 Brees was 1st, Baker a rookie was 19th.

    Again Baker passer rating:

    2018 19th
    2019 31
    2020 15
    2021 27
    2022 29
    2023 9

So, it looks like Baker came in a little bit stronger but Brees was stronger clearly by his 4th year. Not seeing the Brees comparison. Feels like rose colored glasses.

  6. JD Still Says:

Citrus County:LOL! That’s a really lofty goal! Maybe You should start with something a bit more down to earth for Mayfield, like bringing his career win-loss record up to .500 , then you can start dreaming about catching up to Drew Brees.

  7. geno711 Says:

By the way, in 2001 Brees started 1 game, so should not have been included

  8. Dude Says:

“To all the Baker haters; You are now watching our Baker Mayfield transform into a Drew Brees variant.”

Citrus, the only thing they have in common is they’re short and play QB in the NFL. Brees made his career by being extremely efficient & consistent(which led to ridiculous HOF worthy production) and Mayfield has struggled with both his consistency and efficiency from the pocket in his 6 years as a pro QB.

If I have to be labeled a “hater” because media & fans are telling me the Honda Accord I’m looking at handles like a RR Cullinan and I say “BS” than so be it, but that’s a terrible comparison.

  9. Chad Says:

Couch and dude, you all can hate on baker all you want but wouldn’t be more fun to get behind him and root for him and the team. Baker is your qb for now and the future so get in line and quit hating. Enjoy the season and root for another division title and a deep playoff run. Or be negative all season hoping for bakers downfall.

  10. heyjude Says:

Can’t wait to see and hear more. Loving the picture of our QB – Baker Mayfield! Also great to see young kids there having fun too.

  11. Lol Says:

I really was not excited about this group last year. (it was obvious they weren’t winning a SB) I actually was worried that they might perform just well enough to keep this group together. They did just that, but the end of the season run has completely changed my viewpoint of this team/staff.

This year is a different story. With all the growth from last season, I am actually feeling excited

  12. Dude Says:

“Couch and dude, you all can hate on baker all you want but wouldn’t be more fun to get behind him and root for him and the team.”

Fans will dog JTS, because he’s not living up to his 32nd overall draft status.

Those same fans will also make a folk hero out of a QB drafted 1st overall who’s yet to live up to his draft status.

Nobody is confusing JTS with Simeon Rice, but I’m supposed to believe Baker Mayfield is on his way to being Drew fricking Brees?

I can cheer for the Bucs and not be thrilled about who our QB is. Same as I did with Freeman, Glennon, McCown, & Fitz-Winston because that’s my right as an objective Bucs fan.

I disagree. Throw the passer rating out the window. There are too many variables involved to make a head to head comparison. I am making an overall comparison with regard to the beginning of each career followed by a move to a new team.

Both were seemingly written off and discarded prematurely.
Injuries and circumstance played a big role early on.
    Both are “undersized”.

Full comparisons can’t be made yet as Baker is just now where Brees was when his N.O. era started.

Baker is now comfortable and really exhibiting “Franchise Quarterback” characteristics.

If he is fortunate enough to get a 10 year run, he will (in my opinion) be “our version” of Brees. I am not implying a head to head stat comparison. That remains to be seen. But I believe Baker is the QB the Bucs have always needed and now have.

Baker and Brees both share a certain character, will, and desire.
Years 8-16 were Brees best seasons.
This is year 8 for Baker.

Don’t forget, Baker has something Brees never had : a Heisman and 1st overall pick status. Brees was a second round pick and overcame a rough start to his career to become one of the best NFL QB’s ever.

Who says Baker can’t do the same ?

  14. Dude Says:

“Who says Baker can’t do the same ?”

    Bakers play on the field.

“Don’t forget, Baker has something Brees never had : a Heisman and 1st overall pick status.”

Johnny Manziel, Tim Tebow, Vince Young, RG3, Troy Smith, & Matt Leinhart can all make comparable claims and none of them lasted in the league for long.

    C’mon man

  15. Citrus County Says:

In every post I have made about Baker/Brees I clearly stated “OUR VERSION”. Pay attention and read carefully.

Like My Cousin Vinny said; “Are you sure about that?”.

Maybe he is…maybe he isn’t. Time will tell.

I wasn’t thrilled by any of the above either.
But I am thrilled with Baker.
Get behind him and give him a chance.

If Baker Mayfield excels then Liam Cohen will probably get plucked away from us like Canales did

  19. Citrus County Says:

For all you guys that need a remedial ; I only post what are my observations. I never get into player/position analysis. I’ll leave the footwork, hand position, skillset analysis to those who know about such things. I only know what I observe as a fan and only comment on what my life’s experience can back up.

Dude feels that his rights have been violated because I make honest comparisons to the career starts of Baker/Brees. He’s angry and implies that I am insisting or demanding that he believe the same way I do.

If you don’t like what I have to say Dude, make your case.
I really don’t care what you believe.

  20. SlyPirate Says:

BAKER MAYFIELD = DREW BREES = ARE YOUR SERIOUS?

Sure, Baker and Drew are short, white QBs. That’s where the similarities. Stop.

Baker is a gunslinging risk taker, head-first takes hits and plays through injuries tough guy, uber-charismatic leader, with a big arm. Drew was none of these things.

Baker is Maverick. Drew was Ice Man.

If you have to compare Baker to a HOF (which is ridiculous), it’s Favre.

  21. ATLBUC Says:

    Both are “undersized”.

If Drew Brees was being written off it wasn’t because of his play on the field, but because of a serious shoulder injury. Baker was being written off because of his poor performances on the field

  22. RASH Says:

Stats are for losers who never played anything but soccer…football is a team game played by grown men. Baker appears to be a leader. You same statclowns roasted Trent Dilfer he had a horrible defensive minded head coach with 4 hall of fame defenders ,won nothing. ..He came back next year after leaving and won Super Bowl right here in Tampa. Went to Indy for 11 years with leagues most talented arm won once. The only thing holding Mayfield back is Toilet Bowles stating”we dont want to lose then we try to win” mentallity and play calls horrific.

  23. JimBobBuc Says:

Joe I can’t see your notes but here are mine. The player of the day was
Zyon. He had two great PBUs intended for ME13, one on the other side where
Dean normally is. Impressive. Offensively, Jmac was impressive with two redzone TDs and Shephard got wide open a couple times with at least 1
TD. I liked DJ Williams tape and today he caught the ball naturally. A fun morning!

Thank you. You just made my case. The Bucs have never had a franchise QB until now. They picked up a guy that had been written off and now we have a “gunslinging risk taker, head-first takes hits and plays through injuries tough guy, uber-charismatic leader, with a big arm”.

Baker will do for the Bucs what Brees did for N.O.

Once again you made my case. The Bucs picked up Baker after he was written off just like Brees. We picked through the scrap pile ignoring all the franchise saving draft pick QBs with statistically low odds for success and found the next Bret Favre. I’ll take that all day.

  26. Dude Says:

“Dude feels that his rights have been violated because I make honest comparisons to the career starts of Baker/Brees.”

In no way shape or form have I taken your comparison of Baker Mayfield being the next Drew Brees personally, but I will acknowledge the only thing that’s “honest” about it is that it’s honestly just your opinion. Say that in most football circles whether it be to causal fans, die hards, or whomever else in between and you’d likely be laughed out of that circle for making that statement with conviction.

Nobody with a set of eyes that can still see are confusing Baker Mayfield for Drew Brees lol

  27. Kenton Smith Says:

Cleveland Browns 2015-2017. Four wins Forty Four losses. 2018 Baker Mayfield throws for NFL all time rookie touchdown record. 2018 thru 2020 Browns. Twenty four wins twenty four losses. Beats ass off Rothlesberger at Pittsburgh 1st round playoff game. Should’ve beaten Super Bowl champions Chiefs the next round. 2021 Stefanski listens to Baker and waits for left shoulder surgery until after season. Couldn’t throw running laterally which is one of his strengths. Only 8 wins and Baker recovering from shoulder surgery after the season and finds out Watson signs 250 million guaranteed. Asks for release goes to Panthers. Game One 2022 season. Browns at Panthers. Mayfield drives Panthers down field under a minute Touchdown! Browns kick 57 yarder though to win. Only inconsistent play I’ve seen from Baker in his career (including college) is none. I’m sure Bowles and Licht will get the most out of Mayfield. Stefanski and Berry (ClevelandGM) got blown out by the Texans last year first round after being murdered in mentioned Watson trade. Maybe Baker throws a few picks but I’ve seen more than a few NFL receivers have his throws bounce off chests and face masks into opponents hands. He asked for release from Panthers and helped the Rams while Stafford was hurt and never intended to stay as the backup. He’s no journeyman and he’s the opposite of inconsistent. I may be an Okie but I’m tired of some of these comments. I recognize talent and leadership and we Buc fans(new and old) are about to have a season to remember

Yes I said that. That is my biggest concern. Even if Coen gets away, we still have a franchise QB. That is something many teams don’t have and is the only thing that could keep us from circling the drain. The aint’s were circling down the drain before Peyton had the wisdom to get Brees. Brees saved them and made them relevant for 15 years. Baker can do that for us, but perpetual coaching changes would certainly interfere.

    Take that Dude !

  37. Citrus County Says:

Maybe I should have been comparing Baker to Steve Young. What an oversight on my part.

    Thanks kaimaru.

  38. Kenton Smith Says:

Mayfield skeptics say he’s in footballs worst division and barely plays.500 football. NFC s infamous black and blue division. Lions, Bears, Packers and Vikings. Bucs beat ass off all but Lions last year. Outplayed Cousins and Jordan Love. NFC South- slaughters Eagles in playoffs. Outplays Hurts not even in the same league. I watched both at OU. We’re just getting towards Mayfields prime. I prefer facts over stats every time

  39. Defense Rules Says:

Comparing today’s QBs with those of bygone eras is meaningless IMO. Different rules, different supporting casts, different strategies & tactics, etc. Even the size of the players has changed tremendously.

In the 1960s, the average offensive lineman was the same size as today’s linebackers, 6-foot-3, 251 pounds. The average weight of starting offensive linemen grew to 254.3 pounds in 1970, then jumped to 276.9 by 1990. Still, the largest increase in poundage would come in the following 10 years, when the average O-line starter checked in at 309.4 pounds. And that was just by the turn of the century. The average OT in 2022 weighed in at 318 lbs; the average OG at 315 lbs; the average OC at 302 lbs. It’s a much different game today.

  46. Oneilbuc Says:

Man it is what it is Baker is not better than Jalyen Hurts and especially not better than Steve Young who’s a hall of famer. If you put Hurts with the Cleveland Browns team Baker played with they would have went to the Superbowl or at least the AFC championship. Baker had 3 all pro offensive lineman and 2 pro bowlers on that offensive line with a all pro runningback with a good defense. Baker still couldn’t do much with them but he was a young quarterback at the time. I get some of y’all love Baker so much but you have to take off your rose color glasses off . The season is almost here no more excuses for Baker it’s NFC Championship or bust for the bucs!!!

  47. Matt_PcAfee Says:

Baker brings the excitement of Americas Groper but with waaaay less interceptions.

  48. Gipper Says:

    Citrus County,

This 2024 is year 7 for Baker Mayfield. Not sure why you say year 8? Nevertheless, Baker will have an extraordinary year if the rebuilt O line can keep him upright. Last year there was too much defensive push up the middle leaving the running game ineffective and passing game to hurried to work through downfield progressions. Miraculous that Baker played as well as he did with that kind of pressure. Brady would have demanded changes and not allowed himself to be a sitting duck in the pocket.

  49. Citrus County Says:

    Well excuse me.

  50. Shane Callahan Says:

    @Chad and others: Thank you!

@Baker Haters have got to go. You most recent Baker haters are simply filling the shoes of much more intelligent Baker haters that have gone silent because he already proved them wrong. Go Bucs!

I’ve been thinking about this all afternoon. That’s not a ridiculous comparison at all. AND, you made it.

So the Bucs find a QB with Favre like talent and sign him instead of rolling the dice on a draft pick. (ex. #1 draft pick Jaboo)

We now have the face of the franchise that can make and keep us relevant and in contention for a decade.

That sounds a lot like what Sean Peyton did when he brought in Drew Brees. How did that work out ?

  57. Kenton Smith Says:

Oneilbuc did you watch the Bucs stomp the Eagles 6 months ago? Hurts is a good player. But his body language telegraphed what was about to commence at kickoff. Looked like he and his teammates didn’t like each other. Exact opposite vibes coming from Mayfield and the Bucs. I’m an Okie who studied Mayfield, Hurts, and Kyler Murray in their OU careers. Not only is Hurts not better than Mayfield but he’s not as good as Murray either. And although Mayfield may not be as physically gifted as these two guys I can count on Baker to have a positive impact on his team offense, defense, and special teams. Every snap. Never complains. And with this Bucs team from management on down he’s more than capable of winning. I’m sure of it. Championships around the corner and Baker’s best in the clutch. Just sayin’.

  58. Oneilbuc Says:

Kenton. They caught the eagles on a 6 game losing streak so yes my bucs dominated the eagles. But at the same time Hurts played in a super bowl and Baker hasn’t. Baker haven’t even played in a championship game Baker season last year is a average season for elite quarterbacks. Baker is a game manager and that’s the only way the bucs can win with Baker at quarterback. If they try to make Baker be the main reason why the bucs win then we will not make the playoffs. He will have some flashes but that’s about it in the playoffs he choked on that last drive on his second throw. Baker still has to get better but it’s to many people on here is speaking like if Baker is a elite quarterback and that’s just not true.

  59. Oneilbuc Says:

Kenton. I know you are only here because of Baker Mayfield so you will be blind to his bad play he has to play better than last year.

  60. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Bakerslurpers unite that’s all that you post

  61. Kenton Smith Says:

So Baker choked up in Detroit huh? I retired last year and decided to travel to the motor city to watch my new favorite team. The Bucs. Damn those tickets were pricey! They had these big screens at each end of the stadium that showed decibel levels. All game long about 130. Crowd on their feet the entire game. Tie ballgame early in the fourth. If you’re a Bucs fan you’re in awe at the road teams grit. 31-24 Lions. Detroit controlled time of possession 4th qtr. exposing our pass defense. Oh yeah 31-23. Why’d we go for 2? Let’s not do that again Coach. But oneilbuc none of that team was blaming the pass defense or the coaches or Baker. And nobody choked. Detroit had the niners beat the next week but coaching blunders derailed them. Super Bowl goes overtime. We were that close. Nobody choked. They’ve just worked to get better.
