Calijah Kancey Taps Into Warren Sapp’s Wisdom

July 26th, 2024

Calijah Kancey and Warren Sapp unite.

So just before the Fourth of July, Von Miller, along with Maxx Crosby, hosted Miller’s Sack Summit in Las Vegas. The annual clinic is just for pass rushers, by pass rushers, to get dudes get paid.

The way Miller sees it, the more he can help other pass rushers get paid, the more money all pass rushers will get paid. Sort of like a rising tide lifts all boats.

(Greg Olsen, former Bears and Stinking Panthers tight end and current FOX NFL analyst, has a similar camp for tight ends with the same goal in mind: Getting tight ends paid.)

One instructor for this summer’s Sack Summit was former Bucs great and Hall of Famer Warren Sapp. And yes, the Bucs were represented at the Sack Summit besides Sapp. Bucs defensive tackle Calijah Kancey attended.

So Joe wondered what Kancey may have learned from Sapp. Joe asked Kancey yesterday as he was headed to a scheduled lifting session.

“Oh, he was just giving me keys and tips and things to work on going into Year 2,” Kancey said. “He said that’s when he made his significant jump.”

And that’s true. Sapp became one of the league’s greatest forces in his second season with the Bucs, 1996. It was Sapp’s first season playing for Father Dungy, Monte Kiffin and Rod Marinelli. Sapp tripled the number of sacks he had from his rookie season (three).

If Kancey could duplicate Sapp’s progress from his rookie season to his second season, Kancey would have 12 sacks this fall.

Surely, Joe thought, Sapp gave Kancey a breakdown on what he saw in Kancey’s game.

“He liked my quickness and how I play with my pad level,” Kancey said.

So Joe asked Kancey what Sapp thought of him playing for the Bucs. Kancey busted out laughing.

“Yeah, he loves it!”

Warren was a great player, but is a notoriously awful human. I hope Calijah doesn’t pickup too much from 99.

  2. SlyPirate Says:

12 Sacks for CK … Joe’s prediction. Write it down. I think he’s right on the money +/-2.

  3. BakerFan Says:

joe…. chumming for the Trask Cult today, all the Uncle Rico types.

  4. stpetebucfan Says:

I both Calijah and YaYa go off what does that mean for Vita? The new slimmer improved Vea will feast. And trying to account for those three will be a nightmare for OC’s and OL’s. Imagine the opportunties that will create for Gholston, Gaines and Logan Hall even JTS should be able to clean up some opportunities created by the push of Vea, Calijah and pressure from YaYa!

sorry posted on the wrong thread.

  6. Travis Says:

I’d be really happy with 8-10 sacks with 15 tfl. I think that’s doable for him he flashed greatness as a rookie so it’s hard to not have high hopes.

  7. Crickett Baker Says:

I think Sapp cleaned up his act a few years ago. He seems like a better person now.

  8. a-bomb Says:

He broke out to be a good player in 1996. But in 1997, he became a force. That first game against the 49ers is etched in my mind as Sapp’s announcement that he was going to rule the league. He almost singlehandedly dismantled the 49ers.

  9. Dude Says:

There’s a Max Crosby interview of Sapp, so Max asks Sapp how’s it feel to be able to pass knowledge on the new gen pass rushers. Sapp says “Actually I’m here to steal” in reference of gathering intel to bring back to the kids back in Boulder lol

Max also asked who Sapp would cut, start, and bench out of the 3 organizers of the Summit and w/o hesitation Sapp said he’d cut Cam Jordan lol

Just read an article where Sapp blew the $40M he made, is in debt $7M and owes back child support and alimony to 4 different women. Let’s hope Calijah can listen to someone else.

Any Player on 2 all decade teams like Sapp is well worth learning from.

Yes Sapp could be a jerk if you walked up to him and tried to say hello or whatever like some people found out.

But that does not change his HOF level of play for one of the better defenses in the history of the NFL. GO BUCS!!!!

  12. Rod Munch Says:

Listen to Sapp, kid. He knows his stuff, there’s literally never been anyone better.

  13. Citrus County Says:

Just think of what this defense could be with the addition of HR.

  14. JimBobBuc Says:

What camps did JTS and Hall go to?

  15. TampabayDJ Says:

Sapp might have been an azz off of the field, but he was the greatest DT I’ve ever had the privilege of watching. Especially in our Bucs uniform. Who cares what he was like off the field ? He never hurt my feelings, and never could. Go Bucs

  16. Rod Munch Says:

Lots of ‘words hurt’ cupcakes around here, it’s really embarrassing that they get triggered because someone tells them not to bother him while he’s eating. Also the media hated Sapp because he was ‘mean’ to them – when I think it’s been proven over and over again, no one is too mean to the media (not you Joe, you’re a blogger, not the media – which is a compliment).

Anywho, Sapp is my favorite Bucs player all time and I learned all sorts of wisdom from him that I use every day in my life. For example, I never walk around outside without keeping my head on a swivel.

  17. Oneilbuc Says:

I hope he becomes a dominant player I have a lot of confidence in him if he stays healthy.

  18. Oneilbuc Says:

I always loved Sapp and I miss players like Sapp the NFL need to go back when players looked at the opposing as the enemy and not after every game they’re swopping jersey.

  19. Oneilbuc Says:

I hate these sensitive players and fans now days !!

After Mike Sherman confronted Sapp at the end of the ‘head on a swivel’ game, Sapp said this post game — and this will never ever happen in the limp wristed NFL today…

    From ESPN…

Sapp responded afterward by suggesting Sherman cursed at him and then termed the Packers coach “a lying, (manure)-eating hound. … If I was 25 years old and didn’t have a kid and a conscience, I would have given him an ass-kicking right there at the 30-yard line.”

  21. Rod Munch Says:

Oh man this article is great – it continues…

Sapp did not deny that he hunted Clifton out on the play.

“Yeah, I was a heat-seeking missile,” Sapp said. “Boom. Boom. Boom. And I hit him.”

Packers officials announced that Clifton suffered a hip injury and Sherman said he would remain in a local hospital overnight while the club’s medical staff “investigated some other (physical) things, too.”

Most of the players and coaches from both teams, and much of the media which had assembled on the field for the last few minutes of the game, were unaware of the Sherman-Sapp incident. During the incident, an unidentified Packers staffer was shoved by Sapp, then functionaries from both franchises stepped into the fray.

At one point in the shouting match, Sapp screamed at Sherman: “If you think you’re so tough, why don’t you put on a uniform?”

Sherman was shaken by the incident, but appeared to have calmed down by the time he addressed the media. “It bothers me,” he said. “And I think the game of football … well, it should bother the game of football as well.”

The confrontation is certain to draw the scrutiny of league officials and both Sherman and Sapp could be subject to NFL discipline.

This is fantastic, it’s why Sapp is my favorite player ever. Also I was at this game, and what Sapp was saying to Sherman is nothing compared to what I was yelling at all the Packers fans.

  22. drdneast Says:

Logan Hall needed to get his flabby ass to this camp.

  23. Proudbucsfan Says:

I remember that packer game very well. I agreed with everything Sapp said and did, it’s football and the game is supposed to be played that way, it creates the cream to rise to the top. I almost can’t stand the way football has become so soft. Soon there going to outlaw hitting all together and play with flags.
