Bucs Training Camp Practice Notes, Day 1

July 24th, 2024

Rookie running back Bucky Irving works on blocking against Sean Tucker today — the first day of Bucs training camp 2024. Bucs RBs coach Skip Peete looks on.

Alright, the first day of Bucs Training Camp 2024 is in the books. Still underwear football and it will be until Monday — at least the pads are scheduled to come on Monday. So please keep in mind that in underwear football, there is no hitting of any sort.

This is the very first play of 11-on-11 drills and Joe is confident all Bucs fans want to see a lot of this come September: Baker Mayfield hits Mike Evans deep down the left sideline and the crowd at One Buc Palace roars.

* A sign for the defense that Bucs fans want to see: Chase Edmonds tries to run left and he is met by a swarm of defenders for maybe a three-yard loss.

* Talk about a mismatch: Mayfield throws to Evans who is right in front of Chris Braswell short and to the left. Welcome to the NFL, rook.

* Bucky Irving busts through the left side and does a Doug Martin where he continues his run to the goal line.

* Kyle Trask had the worst practice Joe has seen since Byron Leftwich was the Bucs offensive coordinator. Early on he threw into a crowd along the left sideline and Josh Hayes jumped the route but couldn’t haul it in. Yeah, it’s just the first practice but Joe was disappointed that Trask, entering his fourth season, thought throwing into double-coverage along the sideline was the best option.

* Sean Tucker runs up the middle to the right. Somewhere, Dave Canales is smiling.

* Joe doesn’t want to see any Bucs player do badly, but if he makes a bonehead play, Joe wants to see tough love and see him be held accountable. Brandon Walton learned the latter. Playing right guard, Walton jumped backward into pass protection way before the ball was snapped. He immediately was pulled off the field. Refreshing.

* Nearly picked: Trask threw to Cade Otton short right and Bryce Hall jumped the route and Joe thought sure he had a pick. Somehow the ball got through Hall’s arms and Otton was able to haul the pass in. The crowd went crazy, hollering and yelling. Not sure what Joe should type about that play, that Trask was crazy for trying to squeeze a pass through Hall or that Otton had excellent concentration to be able to catch it. Or that Hall blew a chance at a can of corn pick.

* Rookie free agent receiver Latreal Jones (Southern Miss) made a nice catch crossing over the middle, coming back to catch an errant John Wolford pass that was behind Jones. He dove to bring in the pass. Very nice.

* Mayfield is flushed up the middle and dumps the ball off to Chris Godwin over the middle, just before Mayfield reached the line of scrimmage.

* Mayfield tried to throw the ball down the right seam and veteran free agent corner Tavierre Thomas reached out and knocked the ball away with one hand.

* Mayfield in back-to-back plays hits Godwin down the right sideline and Evans over the middle. This, for Bucs fans, is winning football.

* FUMBLE! Bad snap in the exchange between Graham Barton and Trask. You pick who was at fault. Barton logged snaps with both the first- and second-teams.

* Trask throws short right to Sean Tucker and the second-year running back turns upfield and runs right smack into the backside of his blocker. No yards after contact on this play.

* Mayfield threads the needle to Trey Palmer over the middle and it’s lift off at NASA. Palmer turns on the rocket boosters and away he goes.

* Lavonte David vs. Godwin: As good as David is, always take a Pro Bowl receiver against a linebacker. Godwin wins this match as he catches a Mayfield pass maybe 10-15 yards downfield to the right.

* On the next play, Mayfield leads Godwin a bit too far on the left side. Godwin was open.

* Godwin is getting the offseason rust shaken off today. He catches a pass from Mayfield to the left.

* Trask hits Bucky Irving in the right flat and Irving weaves his way through defenders for a decent gain.

* PICK-SIX: Trask looks to complete a pass to Sterling Shepard to the left. The ball was high and Shepard tipped the ball in the air and it fell in the hands of Thomas who housed the pick down the right sideline.

* Wolford connects with Tucker near the left sideline and a good thing for Tucker’s future as a human being it is underwear football. Rookie free agent Shaun Peterson (UCF) had a clean beeline to Tucker and would have beheaded the Syracuse product if there was hitting allowed.

* Jalen McMillan pulls in a short Mayfield pass on the left side.

* Evans skies in a crowd near the left sideline to bring in a Mayfield pass. The fans holler their approval.

* Godwin goes low to reel in a pass from Mayfield.

* Edmonds jump cuts a run up the middle for a nice gain.

* Irving makes a shifty wiggle to dodge a defender in the backfield. Joe heard a fan exclaim, “OMG he’s got moves!”

* Wolford fakes a handoff to Irving and throws short to undrafted free agent Kameron Johnson (Graham Barton College) on the right side.

* Mayfield is flushed right and tosses a short pass to Otton.

* Mayfield throws a short pass to Rachaad White to the left and White, as he is wont to do in the passing game, dodges defenders for a nice little gain.

* Mayfield throws to the right to Evans with Zyon McCollum draped all over him. McCollum tries to punch the ball out but like so many NFL defenders found out the hard way over the years, it was a lost cause. Palmer seemed more pumped than Evans about the play and ran over to slap skin with the future Hall of Fame receiver.

* Trask tosses a pass to the right for McMillan. Then, McMillan shows why folks are so high on his NFL prospects. He breaks a couple of ankles, gets loose and has a big gain.

* Shepard comes back for a pass in the left flat from Trask.

* Payne Durham brings in a pass along the left sideline from Trask.

* Running Kyle: Trask gets flushed out of the pocket and he runs straight up the middle for about 15 yards.

* BOMB: Wolford rares back and heaves a pass down the left side for Johnson for six.

* Wolford throws and hits free agent rookie Tanner Knue (Eastern Michigan) down the left seam.

* Warning: If you come out to training camp and see a No. 9 fielding punts, don’t freak out wondering why Joe Tryon-Shoyinka is returning punts. Knue also wears No. 9. JTS isn’t about to be the next Karl “The Truth” Williams.

* Speaking of punts, Joe isn’t sure if this was spontaneous or planned. But on one punt (in special teams warmups) the punt team ran around in a tight circle presnap and once the ball was punted, the punt team broke from the running in a circle and raced downfield. Joe wasn’t sure if this was just some method to help a return man focus on the task at hand and follow the ball, or if guys were just doing something neat to spice up an otherwise mundane practice.

Thank you Mike Noblin. You have a nice summer home. Wouldn’t want to be there in the winter, though.

Glad Joe could bring a little bit of home in Florida to you in Montana.

  18. Joe Says:

Surprised they went 11×11 on the first day.

Not the whole practice, but much of it.

Remember: It’s still underwear football. No pads until Monday (subject to change). Wasn’t like a full-blown scrimamge.

  19. BakerFan Says:

Where are the “Baker Sucks” crowd?

  20. JimBobBuc Says:

    Thanks Joe!

Good to hear White with some impressive runs. Seems like Wolford came out on fire and Trask was lethargic. Start the battle for QB2.

  21. Buccaneer rick Says:

Love all of it keep reporting please

  22. J Says:

@Joes… these training camp notes were some of the most exciting I’ve read in years! Well, it was at least as exciting as the Brady notes from our SB year. That being said, fantastic notes! Sounds like we’re off to a winning start! Go Bucs! Go Joes!

  23. Simen4HOF Says:

  24. Simeon4HOF Says:

Ty Joe. Your camp notes are always the best. So good to hear Godwin getting so much work in the Offense, signs of very nice things to come

  25. Simeon4HOF Says:

    Evans in mid-season form

  26. Joe Says:

Good to hear White with some impressive runs.

    Didn’t see one.

  27. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

OH EM GEE !!! TRASK HAS WON THE TRAINING CAMP ALREADY!!! START HIM NOW!!! HA HA HA HA !!!!😅🤣😂

  28. Oneilbuc Says:

The season is almost here so all you Baker boys get your excuses ready it’s a new offense. He has a new OC he don’t have a running game it’s Todd Bowles fault. And as far as Trask goes I would have asked to be traded my second year once I saw they were even trying to develop me . And yes last he was better than Baker and we all know it. That’s why y’all love to hear him throw a bad pass. Trask is another quarterback that the bucs has destroyed so this is really a bad look for the bucs. The reason why no one respect the bucs is because of our quarterback. To win with Baker he must be a game manager but this team is going to do the same thing the Browns did with him and that’s make him be the reason why we win games. It’s NFC Championship or bust no excuses!!

  29. 727BUC Says:

Well done Joe 👏 👍….. I too felt like I was there. Can’t wait for the season to start! Go Bucs!!!!!

  30. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

“trying to squeeze a pass through” – Trask

    “threads the needle” Mayfield

Just curious…how is one different from the other? Both were successful?

  31. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Okay, I finished reading all the notes.

“Kyle Trask had the worst practice Joe has seen…”

Was there something outside of the notes that gave this impression? I mean, other than the fumble from center to QB, I saw a bunch of completed passes listed.

  32. Tb bolts Says:

Joe stirring the pot hoping this year will be as active as last year as far as Trask vs Baker. Baker is the solidified paid starter now so that wont be the case until he starts playing poorly or gets banged up and sits a game or two. Excited to see what Trask does in preseason. Bucs will have a solid season at least and there wont be as much drama this time around.

  33. heyjude Says:

I may be still overthinking the notes, but could Wolford and Trask be in a competition for Bakers number one backup? Wolford did work with Coen at the Rams so there is a relationship.

  34. nick houllis Says:

Karl THE TRUTH Williams made me forget all about Danny NO FAIR CATCH Reese!

  35. TDTB Says:

Sounds like Trask isn’t comfortable in the new offense yet. Probably thinking too much. He better put some off-field time in or he’s likely trade material.

  36. go dawgs Says:

    go wolford!! new QB2

  37. JD Still Says:

Buccaneer Bonzai : you noticed that too, lol! I think Joe has drank the Mayfield kool aid, Trask didn’t “ try to thread the needle”, on that pass , and he wasn’t crazy and he did make the throw, but when Mayfield throws into a crowd ,” the crowd roars their approval “ add to that the many times Mayfield “ is flushed”gets nothing on the runs , Trask is flushed once and runs for a nice 15 yard gain, nothing to see here. Different year , same o, same o.

  38. SlyPirate Says:

    Awesome Stuff!!!

Sounds like the offense is clicking. New OC is fitting in.

  39. JD Still Says:

Oneilbuc: you are right , a lesser man would have probably asked for a trade , but Kyle is loyal to a fault to whatever organization he plays for and does what he’s asked to do, it is a pity , Kyle is probably destined to follow in the footsteps of Steve Young, Doug Williams , and Trent Dilfer , in leading other teams to SuperBowls after leaving Tampa , meanwhile the Bucs continue with their league leading record of furnishing SuperBowl Winning quarterbacks for other teams.

  40. Dave Pear Says:

Otard really should just move to Cleveland and STFU.

  41. infomeplease Says:

Bucs Bon, there was the interception over thrown to SS by KT. Just sayin’

  42. siant141 Says:

You Kyle Trask guys kill me. I’m laughing so hard. I’m going to say this in here one more time. Kyle Trask never even started a game in HIGH SCHOOL. Without some really lucky circumstances he wouldn’t have played in college. He did great and made a lot of that opportunity, bit all those coaches from high school to the pros can’t be wrong.

  43. JD Still Says:

siant141: Well bless your little hearts ! Us Kyle Trask supporters are so happy that We put a smile on you Mayfield Minions faces, that will make it easier for us to bare when whatever Halleucinagenic you guys are smoking during your pipe dreams wears off and fades away and the realization that a sub.500 career win , journeyman quarterback is not going to lead you to the football promised land sinks in and you crash and burn in your disappointment and despair , we will at least find solice in the knowledge that for a few brief moments , you had some moments of joy and hope brought to you by us.
