Bucs Training Camp Day 4 Practice Notes

July 28th, 2024

Baker Mayfield tosses a pitch Sunday morning at Bucs training camp.

Jamel Dean gets a rare pick, Jalen McMillan continues to impress and Zyon McCollum is growing up before our very eyes. This and more in today’s practice notes typed up by Joe.

And do remember that this is underwear football practice. Tomorrow morning, Monday, the Bucs will finally put the pads on. This means Joe won’t have to qualify every decent play as “but it’s underwear football.”

11-on-11

* Baker Mayfield throws a short pass to Rachaad White in the right flat and White does what he does best zig-zagging through defenders. He is so damn good at this.

* Look, Joe is not one of the people who constantly rag on Jamel Dean for his lack of picks. If the dude could catch, he’d be a receiver. Sorry, but Joe is just not hung up on takeaways but is very much hung up on forcing three-and-outs. Punts are turnovers too. But Bucs coach Todd Bowles is a takeaway kind of guy. He gets irked because Dean doesn’t get picks. So when Mayfield scanned the field and chose to throw short over the middle for Jalen McMillan, Dean picked off the tipped pass and Joe thought Bowles was going to pull a Bobby Knight. When Knight coached the 1984 Olympics hoops team, he got on Wayman Tisdale constantly for playing lousy defense. All the time. In a scrimmage at an Indiana high school, Tisdale took a charge. Knight called a timeout, ran onto the court with a Sharpie, and wrote an X on the court where Tisdale stood tall with the words, “On this date Wayman Tisdale played defense.” Joe thought Bowles was going to spray paint on the field, “On this date 7/28/24 Jamel Dean got a pick.”

* Bucky Irving runs behind and to the inside of Tristan Wirfs. Nice gain. Why hasn’t someone figured this out before?

* But Sean Tucker gives fans a flashback to last year by running up the middle.

* Kyle Trask throws deep down the right sideline for Ryan Miller and it’s too long. Not a terrible throw but too far for Miller who tried to reach for the ball.

* Trask to Sterling Shepard short left.

* UDFA rookie RB Ramon Jefferson runs to the inside of Wirfs. This ought to be a thing this fall.

* Veteran free agent Cody Thompson on a crossing pattern from the left dives for a John Wolford pass and secures the ball.

* YaYa is hunting: Mayfield is flushed right and the play is blown dead. If hitting was allowed, YaYa Diaby would have gotten Mayfield.

* Ah yes, the ol’ Dave Canales Special: Rachaad White up the middle.

* Mayfield hits Cade Otton on the right side with a medium-range pass.

* Irving runs wide right.

* Tucker runs left. Joe saw a lot of runs to the left side for the first team this morning. Wonder why?

* Tucker carries again, this time right up the gut.

* McMillan is open in the right flat and Mayfield delivers the ball on the mark.

* Mayfield pumps right and connects with Otton on the left side. The third-year tight end got behind a pair of defenders.

* UDFA OLB Daniel Grzesiak (Cincinnati) jumps offsides.

* Mayfield goes deep for Mike Evans down the right sideline. Yes, it was complete.

* Trey Palmer gets behind the defense so badly he was wide-ass open. Touchdown from Mayfield!

* Trask his Jefferson in stride down the right seam.

* Trask, in shotgun, handles a high snap and rifles the ball to Shepard on the left side.

* With Christian Izien draped all over him, Miller dives for a Trask offering and was able to scoop the pass up on the left side.

* Trask throws right to Raleigh Webb. Nice play design as Webb caught the ball behind two blockers.

Red Zone

* With Chris Godwin cutting across the field, Mayfield hits him near the right hashmark. Godwin turns it upfield for the score.

* Pretty: Mayfield lofts the ball to Godwin as he neared the right sideline in the end zone. Godwin pulled the ball in and got two feet down for six.

* Pretty much the same play for Mike Evans. He was not able to come down with the ball.

* Irving runs to the right side and comes up short.

* Graham Barton (center), Sua Opeta (left guard) and McMillan (receiver) are all on the field with the first team in this series of snaps for the first team.

* Mayfield lollipops a pass to Evans near the right sideline in the end zone and this time Evans was able to control the ball for a touchdown.

* PICK! Trask throws to the left side and SirVocea Dennis reads the play like a book, firing to the ball, grabbing it and returning the ball 25-30 yards down the left sideline.

* Trask steps up in the pocket to avoid the rush and dumps the ball off short to rookie TE Devin Culp on the right side.

* Jefferson runs up the middle to the left of center. He had a nice hole to run through.

* A Rakim Jarrett sighting! Wolford throws into a crowd and Jarrett skies between a pair of defenders to bring the pass in. Might have been picked if Jarrett didn’t outjump defenders.

11-on-11

Mayfield tries to hook up with Evans on a slant pass from the left but can’t connect.

* Mayfield tries to link up with McMillan over the middle but the pass was incomplete.

* Anthony Nelson flies in from the left side which nearly chases Mayfield right into the arms of Joe Tryon-Shoyinka.

* This was the crazy good Zyon McCollum pick. Mayfield pumps left and throws right to seemingly nobody. McCollum looked as if he played receiver and broke free at the line. He raced under the pass and hauled it in after bobbling it.

* Mayfield goes deep for McMillan and it was just a bit too long.

* Palmer catches a short pass on the right side from Trask.

* Mayfield tries to complete a long pass for McMillan but it was too long.

* Palmer catches a short pass from Mayfield on the right side.

* Tight end Sal Cannella the intended target down the right seam. But the ball sailed close enough for Kaevon Merriweather to try to dive to get a pick. He came up empty. Merriweather was so disgusted by the play he booted the football.

* Trask with a short pass to Culp to the right.

* This time Trask hits Cannella down the right seam.

* Trask connects with UDFA Kameron Johnson (Graham Barton College) who skies in a crowd down the right seam.

More Red Zone

* Whoops: Diaby jumps offside.

* Mayfield, in back-to-back plays, connects with White on the right side and Evans to the left. Both were short passes.

* Mayfield backpedals to his left from the rush. Throws incomplete. Would have been a sack if this were real football.

* Irving starts running to his left, buries his pivot foot and bursts right up the middle for a nice gain. That was Irving’s bread-and-butter running play at Oregon.

* Another catch by McMillan, this time down the right seam from Mayfield.

* Trask aims for White in the left flat but Trask’s pass is wide left.

* Spinning Kyle: The Bucs have greatly emphasized yards after contact from their running backs this summer. Enter Trask. He was flushed out of the pocket and ran up the middle. Then he put a spin move on two defenders to continue his run. Nice.

* Shepard on a crossing pattern from the right catches a Trask pass near the right hashmarks. He cuts upfield and wills himself to get a few YAC yards.

* In shotgun, Trask fields a high snap and throws to Cephus Johnson to the right side for a touchdown.

OK, folks, that’s it for today’s notes. Tomorrow the pads come on! Should be fun.

Kind of forget about Dennis, but I hope he can step it up this year, maybe give David a few plays off to hopefully keep him healthy.

Go Bucs. Sounds like both sides of the ball are sharpening their tools.

  8. Kgh4life Says:

Mayfield seems to be having trouble connecting on the deep throws, maybe Joe should ask the coaching staff if it’s a concern?

  9. Irishmist Says:

Was that Barton with the high snaps or Hainsey?

  10. Marine Buc Says:

Can’t wait for the pads to be put on…

I’m very curious if our D-line and O-line has progressed at all.

  11. Fred McNeil Says:

Thank you Joe. Last year SirVocea started off with a few early picks too, IIRC. Maybe they all can carry it into opening day.

Hey, Joe, don’t they start off in “shells” tomorrow?

“Go ahead and delete it! What are you waiting for??”

    Bro, STFU.

I don’t know why Joe gives you a$$clowns so much leeway. I’d have banned you for being a troll by now.

  25. GoneGator Says:

And thanks Joe for the report!

Sounds like coaches are pleased and we may be ahead of the curve compared to last year.

And thanks Joe for the report!

Appreciate it. And you are welcome!

  27. Joe Says:

Hey, Joe, don’t they start off in “shells” tomorrow?

Usually that’s the way to go for the first day in pads and they probably will. You can still hit in shells, just not low.

  28. Dave Pear Says:

ATLoser at it again. A celery stalk has more sense.

  29. JimBobBuc Says:

In the photo above, it looks like Bake is pitching to DJ. I love the pitch plays, and it’s interesting that DJ was getting reps with Bake.

  30. Joe Says:

Are Durham and Kieft getting reps? If so, with which team?

Durham a few with first team. Kieft has made some touchdown catches with second team.

  31. Joe Says:

Fantastic coverage, Joe. I’m wondering if you spotted Myron Lewis out there…

    LOL

  32. Joe Says:

Mayfield seems to be having trouble connecting on the deep throws, maybe Joe should ask the coaching staff if it’s a concern?

    Nah, he’s the starter.

  33. Dave Pear Says:

Surely, Trashk is outplaying Baker but Todd doesn’t want to play the best player because he doesn’t care about winning.

That, in a nutshell, is the Trashkophile conclusion.

  34. heyjude Says:

Thank you so much for the practice notes. It always feels like being there. Great to hear Barton, McMillan, and Opeta are on the field with the first team.

This is the time to work on mistakes. Looking forward to the next set of notes with the pads.

  35. CJBucsFan Says:

@ ATLBUC. You are a delusional idiot.

  36. ChanEpic Says:

Practice notes posts like this is why JBF is such a staple in my daily routine this time of year. Thanks so much Joe(s).

  37. BigBucsFan Says:

Glad may feel it back for another strong year, and hopefully Trask can eventually prove he’s not going to be NFL trash. Good and exciting college players don’t always translate to the NFL but he’s getting so much grooming time he should be a decent backup at least. What have seen of him

  38. Robbie Says:

    Ty for the notes Joe!!
