A New Level For Chris Godwin?

July 25th, 2024

Chris Godwin getting a lot of post-practice work in yesterday.

Joe often is asked the simplest of simple questions. What struck you most about Day 1 of training camp?

It’s usually a difficult answer, but the C-level executives at JoeBucsFan.com world headquarters found a fast consensus yesterday. Chris Godwin looked fantastic. (In second place was Kyle Trask struggling a lot compared to smooth-looking No. 3 QB John Wolford.)

Godwin’s movement was that of a younger version of himself, and he was just sharp.

And Godwin stayed after practice for a long time catching balls from the Jugs machine (photo above) while many players were enjoying a break, mingling with family or already in the locker room.

Godwin is riding a run of three consecutive 1,000-yards-plus seasons. And now he’s entering his third season following major knee surgery in January of 2022.

If the Bucs are getting a fully healthy, happy and motivated Godwin in a contract year, NFC South defenses should be shredded routinely.

We can only Hope he shreds defenses….. he was under utilized last season …. between him and White offenses should be having nightmares of the short dump off pass….

  2. ATLBuc Says:

Lets hope Liam puts him back in the slot.

Evans might be the big play receiver for our offense but Godwin keeps the wheels turning. When he’s healthy and being used correctly he is an absolute 3rd down machine! Can’t wait to see how this all comes together.

  4. BucU Says:

Another core player who will be firing on all cylinders this season. I like this team.

  5. Defense Rules Says:

The media always seems to assume that Chris has a lot to prove, virtually every year. Maybe it’s because they view him as playing in the shadow of Mike Evans? Nothing could be farther from the truth IMO; they’re 2 totally different receivers, and they complement each other perfectly. That said however, there will be a LOT of competition for targets in this year’s offense, and the hot hand always seems to get the most.

Gut feel is that Todd Bowles & Liam Coen will be content with a more ‘plodding offense’ that scores points (of course) but that uses the clock as it does so. Too many 3-and-outs are detrimental to the defense. Last year’s 41.5% 3rd down conversion rate was a LOT better than 2022’s 37.4% conversion rate, but not nearly as good as say the 49ers’ 47.5% 3rd down conversion rate. Makes a huge difference in TOP (as do takeaways?).

Tend to think that this year we’ll see a slightly higher run-pass ratio than we saw last year (41.9%) IF the running game finally comes alive, and that MIGHT mean slightly fewer passing plays. Plus can see more competition for the ball this year with Evans, Godwin, Palmer, McMillan, Shephard, Otton plus 3 RBs with very good hands. What a nice problem to have.

Solid breakdown DR. As usual. I agree with your analysis. With a little more creativity in the run game and some solid run blocking this total offense could be fun to watch. Go Bucs!

This offense will be better than last year. I hope the new playbook sinks in fast. If the new offense comes together quickly, this season could be epic. LFG!

  8. teacherman1983 Says:

    This Man deserves his name.

He is a true Bucs legend.

We will resign him with the same deal Mike got.

Godwin is a ring of honor Bucs hero.

God bless Christopher Godwin. The Pisces Warrior of Love.

  9. Buc Bucs Bucs ! Says:

ATL BUC: Yeah, I think Liam is putting Godwin back into the slot, like you said. But are Palmer and McMillan good in the outside roles?

Another area where I feel Canales shït the bed. Really did not utilize Chris the way he needs to be utilized and Chris’ wife let ‘em know about it. Really thinking Carolina did us a favor and Cohen is going to show us what a true OC can do.

  11. Fred McNeil Says:

I certainly did notice Godwin’s name popping up in yesterday’s report. Haven’t read today’s yet.
