Tribal Confusion In NFC South

June 16th, 2024

Bucs GM Jason Licht

Bucs general manager Jason Licht’s team of receipt-keeping interns might need to call the boss for guidance on this one.

Joe often refers to the ProFootballFocus.com team as the PFF Tribe. The tribe has visible spokespeople but too much of their work grading and analyzing players and teams is shrouded in mystery, yet so much of the NFL fan and media community swallows their work whole and asks for more. Strange.

Anyway, Tribe leader Sam Monson took to YouTube recently and discussed grades of the Bucs’ offseason, along with grades for every other NFL team’s winter and spring.

Rather than give his own grades, he engaged in dissecting the grades passed out by his colleague and PFF Tribe draft guru Trevor Sikkema. And there was lots of disagreement. Joe found that funny because the Tribe sells player grades to fans and treats them as gospel, yet they’re disagreeing on their grades publicly?

Sikkema, a former Bucs beat writer, gave the Bucs an “A” grade for their offseason and Monson disagreed calling it a “stretch.”

Predictably, Monson blasted his colleague for giving the Falcons a “C-” grade for their offseason. Monson agrees with the slobbering of so many over the Falcons. Why? Because they added injured quarterback Kirk Cousins.

Monson scolded Sikkema without him being present. “Trevor, you are wrong and you’re hating on the Falcons and I’ve had enough of it. It ends now,” he said.

Again, Joe finds if funny that the Tribe is disagreeing on precious their grades.

What we have idiot PFF Tribe leading idiots. So, what’s new with that, NOTHING.

  2. realistic-optimistic Says:

Sikkema’s a smart guy, and I agree with a lot of his takes. That said, he’s a FL boy, and he has a slight bias toward the Bucs. I think reality lies somewhere between those two grades.

  3. BigMacAttack Says:

Sorry Joe, I appreciate your hard work but I don’t care what anyone says about our team now who isn’t in 1BP. They’re just flapping and yapping. I listen to DB55, Ronde, Sapp, Bill Polian, Sapp and players with real credibility. Too many NFL reporter shills don’t really study the Bucs and everyone who isn’t here has hated on our team for decades. Being underrated and underestimated is a good thing. Maybe not so much for the Glazers’ coffers but they’ll go as the team goes. No worries here.

  4. KABucs Says:

Sounds like Monson wants to be a future beat writer for the Falcons. How can so many people basically hand them the division while everyone’s playing underwear football and the Falcons universally got a “D” or lower grade on their draft from just about everybody. Could have gotten a projected stud defender with that first pick and instead got a second quarterback who’s possibly injury prone. The quarterback they just paid a.fortune to hasn’t done crap in the playoffs… ever. Plus he’s coming off a pretty serious injuru of his own. If both of their quarterbacks get reinjured, they will be fully wrecked.

  5. SenileSenior Says:

Of course Sikkimese is somewhat biased, but he can brutally honest at times (from what I have seen of him). I respect his take on the potential of this year’s Bucs.

  6. ModHairKen Says:

What is this PFF? Were they on the t stage next to Goodell handing out the trophy? No? Yeah. That’s right. They are just phony scientists.

  7. Pickgrin Says:

PFF is lucky to have Sikkema – one of the bright young minds when it comes to journalism and football evaluation.

Monson would be wise not to call him out publicly like that very often….

Sounds like Monson is a closet Dirty Birds fan – and he’s drinking the Radio Raheem/Kirk Cousins kool-aid spiked with PGA….

  8. Citrus County Says:

Politics, Atlanta, a certain Fulton County DA, the prosecution of a certain individual…It all adds up to me. That’s why in my opinion the dirty birds are so favored

  9. Addb Says:

Sikkema has always backed up his claims. I’ll take his word even if he may have a slight homer bias

  10. Bucnjim Says:

Sweep the division. Do what Tom Brady did for years in the AFC East. That will solve just about everything including the division title

  11. Fred McNeil Says:

Sikkema used to write for pew ter report for years. Of course he loves the Bucs and disses the Falcons.

  12. Fred McNeil Says:

Bucnjim, Amen to that! Sweep the division and we will be sitting pretty. Even 5 out of 6 if we sweep Atlanta.

  13. Rod Munch Says:

Well Trevor is a Bucs fan – and I very very very much agree that the Bucs don’t get an A for their offseason. They lost 3 defense starters, and locked themselves into a multi-year deal with a middling QB, to go with an already middling HC.

I think, overall, that Licht did well considering the cap and draft position, it’s just not an A.

The entire NFC South has improved and I don’t think it’s going to be the cakewalk that it was last year when you just had to show-up to win the division.

Of course it doesn’t matter what I think, it matters what they do on the field, and I hope I’m wrong like I was last year. Although, with that said, I’m not anywhere near as down on the team this offseason as I was last offseason – but I don’t get the people who think the Bucs already have the division locked up, like nothing has changed – because a lot has changed.

  14. geno711 Says:

PFF asks Joe’s across the country to help them with their grading system.

I am sure some Joe’s are better than others.

What I find interesting is that these Joe’s take Warren Sharps grades as gospel.

“… so much of the NFL fan and media community swallows their work whole and asks for more.”

Isn’t this exactly what Joe does with Warren Sharp.

  15. Fred McNeil Says:

Hey, Rod, I’d say signing Baker for two years at $30 mil each and a third year at $40 not guaranteed is worth an A right off the bat. Landing Barton is bound to help our online. Adding Whitehead is a huge improvement over Neal. Bryce Hall is solid depth. Several players look likely to emerge. I’d give that an A.

  16. SenileSenior Says:

I give the Bucs an A-for every aspect of free agency and the draft in 2024. ‘This rating is just an opinion and my way of saying “Under the circumstances Licht and staff did quit well.”.

    I am biased. Go Bucs!

  17. BigMacAttack Says:

The Bucs traded away overpaid Carlton Davis. He was not consistent as a starting QB and often injured. Devin White was done, and played terrible last season. Shaw Barrett was a great guy but also had a bad a season. The Bucs saying goodbye to these 3 players was an upgrade all the way around, and it saved tons of cash. So I can’t agree with the esteemed Mr. Munch on this one.

  18. BAKERSBucs says Says:

Nobody agrees with the moron rod munchkin

  19. BigMacAttack Says:

Maybe not BAKERSBucs but he’s been commenting on JBF since day 1 with a few of us so he’s a Bucs Fan and loves the Bucs. Maybe not everyone who’s come and gone at 1BP, but he’ll come around when they start kicking butts this year.

    ……………………………

So you think we’d be a BETTER team with Shaq and DW?

  21. Dave Pear Says:

This roster is good enough for 11 or 12 wins. Todd seems to be grasping the gaping defects from the last two years and moving to make impactful changes. It’s all anyone could ask right now.

I’m looking forward to hosting a smoked crow barbecue at a tailgate next January.

    LFG

  22. Buccos Says:

Bucs look like strong contenders this year. Getting Whitehead back in the fold was HUGE! LFG Bucs!!

  23. MadMax Says:

F the haters we got this

  24. garro Says:

BS is always BS no matter how you spin it Joe. Trev has lost his way me thinks the other dude never had one.

    Go Bucs!

  25. PowerOfPewter Says:

Last season the Falcons were a pretty good team, that just lacked a good QB. They addressed that with an injured veteran FA and a draft pick that was a stretch. There was also big turnover in the coaching staff. Best case scenario: it takes them 1/2 the season to get the kinks worked out and everybody on the same page and contend for a title in a weak division. Worst case scenario: the wheels come off. Either way, they have to get past the defending NFC South champs Bucs, who by all appearances should be a bit improved. While I don’t completely write off the Falcons, I think it’s pretty foolish to award them the division title before training camp even begins.

  26. heyjude Says:

Our draft picks, keeping Evans/Baker, and so much more gives us a deserved “A” and accolades. Cousins is a wild card and may be replaced by Penix mid-season. It isn’t all about Cousins injury though. He has never won a Super Bowl. He has played on three teams including the Falcons, and has only won 1 playoff game. He is a nice guy, but those stats don’t lie.

  27. Hodad Says:

Before the draft Sikkema had Bucky Irving as one of his favorite sleeper players. He just raved about him. So when the Bucs drafted him a long with, Barton, Braswell, Smith, McMillan, why wouldn’t you give the Bucs an A grade?

  28. BucsFan55 Says:

Trevor is the only guy i listen to from PFF

  29. Oneilbuc Says:

The bucs has to dominate the NFC south this year if they want more respect .

  30. BucBored Says:

Of course, it’s fun and way too easy to criticize sportswriters’ opinions. That’s why 99% of sportswriters give the others a bad name.

  31. Dave Pear Says:

Osqueeltard opens her sausage hole again. What the Bucs need to do is win at least 10 games. All by one point if that’s what it takes. Let the naysayers (that means Saints fans like Osqueeltard) respect whoever they want.

Just win, baby. Maybe the squealer should go to Cleveland and get dominated by JaMiss.

  32. Towered Says:

Stats are hard. Let’s just keep making every decision from the gut like John Wayne. There. I feel so much safer now.

  33. ^^mtn^^ Says:

There’s a reason they’re called the dirty birds.

Sweeping the division sounds great, but blowing them out by 30+ points and pulling Baker 4th quarter for Trask would shut the critics up.

Would be nice if Bowles could get the team fired up enough to do that, I think they play both games in the same month IIRC
