“Safety Blanket”

June 21st, 2024

Rachaad White, in past years, has talked about wanting to run routes as a receiver and be more like Le’Veon Bell in his prime when it comes to his usage.

So Joe thought White not going there was noteworthy.

Appearing on The Jim Rome Show this week, the Bucs’ No. 1 running back was asked about how he’ll be used in the new Tampa Bay offense run by Liam Coen and what he thinks of it. White somewhat dodged the question and talked about getting a good share of checkdowns.

White talked about Mike Evans drawing more double teams than anyone in the NFL and Chris Godwin pulling attention, which should lead to him to being free for Baker Mayfield and ready to break tackles.

“Just see me, man, and be a safety blanket,” White said, noting how he takes pride in turning a short pass into a long one.

Interestingly, White talked about Godwin playing “outside.”

It’s been said by Coen that Godwin will play primarily in the slot this season, but like in past years, that still means Godwin will be seen as an outside receiver at least 20 percent of the time.

bake can not see anything inside of 20 yards over the middle….even if he did, he does not have the touch to make the throw.

someone posts some stats/charts to prove me wrong………

  2. Dude Says:

This infatuation of where Chris Godwin lines up at this point in his career as if we haven’t seen him line up at X, Y, Z in his career with multiple QBs and in numerous offensive systems is kind of weird. At this point as Bucs fans we should all know, just line Chris up and let him cook.

White to me is fine as a runner, should improve there with better movement from the IOL and to me his ability as a threat as a reciever out of the backfield scream “Matt Forte” who was a pretty dynamite RB for a long enough time to put up crazy numbers.

Boss give it a rest. Baker is taller than Drew Brees

I am as tall as Charles Barkley but that don’t mean Jack Squat.

  5. Boss Says:

    @beej

They need to get bake some platform cleats

  6. Gipper Says:

    Boss,
Just noise from you. Baker competed 22 straight passes in a 5TD Cleveland game versus Cinci circa 2020. He had a similar game for Rams in 2022 when he was 24 out of 28. Baker had a very high completion rate at Oklahoma which is one of reasons SI named him the best college QB since 2000. If Baker gets time to throw, he is highly accurate. When the new O line gets settled in, Baker will have an outstanding 2024. No QB can complete passes when he is under constant pressure. Bucs management is making a big investment in improving O line this year.

  7. LANshark Says:

The most misunderstood aspect of last season’s criticism of Baker was to do with the collapse of the interior pocket. Pocket’s are designed so that the tackles are supposed to ‘run the end around the corner’ – ie, push them outside and upfield.

The interior line, on the other hand, is supposed to ‘hold their ground’ – ie NOT be pushed backwards into the QB. When they ARE (which happened a LOT last season) the QB cannot step up into his throw, and has a much harder time seeing the field. And last season at times, Hainsey looked like he was on roller skates. So, the problem with an interior pocket collapse causes 2 effects: 1) it makes for more batted passes at the line, and 2) accuracy on longer passes drops because the QB cannot step into his throw properly.

So, just NOT collapsing should improve the passing.

  8. J Says:

Boss, Baker had 60 completions that were 20+ yards. Out of the top 10 QB’s, he had just as many if not more completions in that category. (There are a few honorable mentions that were further down the list, but no one really outside of the top 10 QB’s had as many completions in this category, so it holds value.) Take Bkaers “Yards gained per pass completion’ which was 11.1, so most of those completions occurred inside of 20 yards. To me it looks like he was successful with intermediate passes. I will agree that he could have had more completions if he hadn’t rifled the ball at times, but you could say that to just about every QB.

Watch some video, Boss. Like Mayfield highlights or the Bucs’ best plays of 2023. It may just rock your world.

  11. Biff Barker Says:

I’m very optimistic as our team gets younger! Our last three drafts have been better.
But temper expectations. New OC and so many new players and coaches! Expect second half of season we’ll be much better,

  13. unbelievable Says:

Baker’s completion & is way higher on short and intermediate throws compared to long throws, but “Boss” wouldn’t know that because he’s a total moron.

  14. unbelievable Says:

^ And with all that said, he still ranked 5th in the league for most air yards per attempt, and had the 2nd most TD passes on throws over 20 yards.

So if that completion % improves on the long throws, everyone should watch out.

  15. Boss Says:

“5th in the league for most air yards per attempt”

egggzacry….bake could not complete a 10 yard throw over the middle with a step stool

touch is the word you are seeking.

  16. SlyPirate Says:

    THE POINT HERE …

Coen wants to get White the ball out in space in one-on-ones.

    That is …
    1. BRILLIANT! REFRESHING! COMPITENT!
    2. What we were all screaming for the 2nd half of the season.
    3. Where White is one of the best in the league.
    4. Another example of how Canales was lacking as an OC.

  17. bucs bucs bucs Says:

The biggest question that I have is how deeply and quickly can Baker and the offense adapts abd begins to thrive with a new Offensive Coordinator? We have a tough schedule.

  18. stpetebucfan Says:

    Boss

Here are the only ‘stats” that matter.

9-8 last season 1-1 in the playoffs on a team that sucked the year before with an over the hill GOAT. A team that had a ROOKIE OC who clearly was learning the job with OJT not any past success and it showed in his game schemes and play calling!!

Close to .500 with the crappiest franchise in the league with all due respect to the Jets and Panthers. The Brownies have an idiot owner and a record of futility that preceded Baker who was the ONLY QB in recent year to turn the Browns into a team that actually won a playoff game on the road against arch rival Pittsburgh.

2nd in Rookie of the year balloting Mayfield set the NFL rookie quarterback record for passing touchdowns during his first season, along with ending a 19-game winless streak for the Browns in his debut. His most successful season was in 2020 when he led the Browns to their first playoff appearance since 2002 and first playoff victory since 1994.

On the annual Top 100 Players list for 2019, Mayfield’s PEERS named him the 50th best.

Sorry Boss but the opinion of actual NFL players always trumps that of a whiny negative weasel shooting his keyboard off on a sports blog!!!

Does 99 fatty have a football point or just trying to be an Internet fat guy?

  20. Captain Dan Lawrence Says:

  21. garro Says:

White needs to focus on running the plays that are in the Coen’s play book for running back. Maybe he can make 1000 yards like he said a week or so ago.

Do yourself a favor Rachaad. Stay off TV and focus on your day job. Rome ain’t doing you any favors young man.

    Go Bucs!

  22. heyjude Says:

Interesting information from Rachaad. Some good tidbits about Godwin in what he said. Loved him saying “Mike Evans drawing more double teams than anyone in the NFL.” Words to respect.

@Boss – Mayfield has had eight coaches and only four teams. He was on the Panthers which have been unstable. He was on the Browns and they ditched him for Watson. Big error in judgement and a huge waste of money. Mayfield did really well last season. Being the 2nd season with the Bucs, he will do even better. He is also familiar with Coen. Which is even better too.

Baker is 6’1″. Jalen Hurts is the same. Russell Wilson 5’11”. Drew Brees, Kyler Murray, Doug Flutie, Michael Vick, Joe Theismann, Fran Tarkenton,… All shorter QBs. So Baker is in with a great group of QBs!

  23. RustyRhinos Says:

LANshark And when the interior of the Oline is pushed back int the backfield what also happens? Will there be any room for any running game to be successful?

Watching the Rams highlights for the past 4 seasons, I see a good rushing and passing attack. I hope White and Irving each get over 600 yards rushing, Edmonds 400, and Tucker, Williams, and Jefferson get another 500 combined. We need to have a rushing attack that has the punch to get 2+ yards at any time.

I do not see any issues with our passing game except, that there is only ONE ball..

Wut? His completion rate was remarkably higher on short to intermediate throws.

I don’t think your brain works very well.

  29. Shane Callahan Says:

Boss, you’re still a moron. Baker can see the entire field and make every throw if he has more than 1 second to make his reads. You know nothing about him or his career, so please stop pretending like you do. And that goes for the rest of ya.

  30. Shane Callahan Says:

Baker is a shorter more athletic version of Dan Marino who has been stuck on some really crappy teams. If he was on the Chiefs, they would be talking about him like folks are talking about Mahomes. There’s a reason why #1 draft picks are busts. Get a clue haters.

  31. Oneilbuc Says:

Shane. You see this is why I push back on these Baker Mayfield statements and then you guys love to call it hate. When y’all start comparing him to legends like Dan Marino. Man you can’t compare Baker Mayfield to Dan Marino or any other hall of famer but maybe 1 and that’s Bret Favre.

  32. #99 the big fella Says:
