Tristan Wirfs Back To Being The Best?

June 10th, 2024

Impressive stats.

UPDATED: One reason — it wasn’t the main reason — that “this Joe” was not down with the Bucs flipping Tristan Wirfs from right tackle to left last season was Wirfs’ legacy.

Joe believed Wirfs was on a Hall of Fame trajectory. He was that dominant at right tackle, head and shoulders better than any other right tackle. So had he remained there, Wirfs was damn near shoo-in for a Hall of Fame bust in Canton.

Alas, the Bucs did move him to left tackle. He was good, don’t get Joe wrong. But Joe didn’t think he fully owned people like he did at right tackle.

Did that change late last year?

If you believe the numbers from the PFF tribe — not their dumb grades, but their stats — Wirfs turned in a dominant postseason.

Per the tribe, Wirfs didn’t allow one defender to get anywhere near Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield in two playoff games. And it wasn’t like Wirfs was facing complete jokes. The Philadelphia defensive front was damn stout. The Lions pass rush and pass defense was subpar but not embarrassing.

And yet neither team did anything against Wirfs, if you believe the tribe. Not a thing at all. Wirfs just owned people.

Was that a sign Wirfs figured out left tackle and was back to being his brick wall standard that he set at right tackle?

I think if they switched him to Safety he would find a way to outplay AWJ.

Okay …a slight exaggeration….but only slight. This dude is a champion.

    🙂

    Go Bucs!

  2. teacherman1983 Says:

4-5 tackles were taken before this Adonis!

    What were they thinking????

Proves that most GM’s are MORONS.

  3. Capt.Tim Says:

Except in the last 20 years, only Left tackles get voted into the hall.
How many modern age Right tackles are in the Hall?
    Exactly.

Because the great Tackles get moved to the left side.

  4. JC Says:

More important for him, LTs get PAID.

  5. Hodad Says:

I was hoping when first looking at Wirfs picture he signed a new deal. Any word on that front Joe?

  6. Beeej Says:

Munoz is the last great right tackle I can think of

  7. BA’s Red Pen Says:

Wait a minute, Wirfs was dominant against the Eagles in the playoffs? That’s impossible the Eagles had Hassan Reddick last season! lol

  8. BucsFan Says:

Wirfs is going to be the highest paid tackle in football and deservedly so.

  9. NutterBuccer Says:

And all the sacks he gave up in regular season came after his injury I’m pretty sure.

  10. Dave Pear Says:

Too bad he had a string of Matadors to his right.

  11. A Bucs Fan Says:

Mike Greenberg is on record saying there was no timeline for Wirfs deal.

He’s a great player. I just hope he stays healthy and learns to finish in the run blocking better. He’d be a HOF if he improve on those two areas.

  12. gotbbucs Says:

It’s about what’s best for the team, not Hall of Fame “trajectory”.

  13. Capt.Tim Says:

Anthony Munoz was a Left Tackle.
Played at USC then 13 years for the Bengals.
    But a left Tackle

  14. Lol Says:

Great Decision and great execution by the Bucs. In Hindsight and in the moment the move to left tackle was a NO BRAINER

  15. Brian in St Pete Says:

Tough for a RT to get in the hall, no matter how dominant.

  17. Britton Says:

Wasn’t he grading out as the best left tackle in the league before his injury mid season?
