Kind Request For Liam Coen: More Points, Please

June 6th, 2024

Bucs OC Liam Coen.

Jo may have found the source of national disrespect for the Bucs.

It’s a thorn in the side for Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht that folks outside the Tampa Bay area consider his team a step above the Stinking Panthers. Joe had believed it directly goes to the respect, or lack thereof, for quarterback Baker Mayfield.

You know, it’s all about the quarterback?

Well, it may be something slightly bigger. It’s all about points.

Per Rich Hribar, typing for Sharp Football Analysis, did a regular season breakdown of the Bucs prior to the playoffs. Per Hribar, the Bucs were the most punchless offense in the postseason.

Tampa Bay led for only 33.8% of their offensive snaps this season, 17th in the league and the lowest rate of any NFC team in the playoffs.

Joe has never been a keep-it-close kind of guy. Those who aim to keep the game close with the option of putting a team away late in the game are wielding a double-edged sword.

Teams that keep a game close also keep the other team in the game.

Joe wants to bury opponents, not keep them on life support. Put your foot on their neck.

Will the Bucs revert to the Bucco Bruce Arians’ model of offense and light up the scoreboard? Unlikely. That’s not Todd Bowles.

But Joe hopes at least new offensive coordinator Liam Coen pumps more life in offense than running a subpar running back up the middle time and again.

It’s only June and Joe already has me fired up!!! He’s already going all Conan the Barbarian and I for one love it!

“What is best in life? Conan: To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women.”

I don’t need to hear the lamentations of their women, lol, but I’d love to see the Saints driven before us and CRUSHED!!!

The problem with the offense was a serious lack of a run game… hopefully our revamped offensive line remedies that

  3. realistic-optimistic Says:

More points would be amazing. I’m not holding my breath that The Chihuahua can regularly sustain drives and score points. At least there’s plenty of room for improvement in our run game. The OL upgrades are promising.

  4. Lt. Dan Says:

@ realistic-optimistic: I assume by “The Chihuahua” you were referring to baker Mayfield’s size?

    Baker Mayfield: 6′ 5/8″ and 215 pounds.

    Dree Brees: 6’0 / 210 pounds. Soon to be a HOF’er.

    Just stop please.

  5. realistic-optimistic Says:

Size is only part of it. He also likes to bark like he’s tha man (he isn’t). Hence chihuahua.

  6. BillyBucco Says:

This directly correlates to not scoring on the 1st drive and in the 1st quarter. We really couldn’t ever TAKE CHANCES on defense because of it. It all works together when you START strong. Im betting the Bucs score a TD on 4 or 5 opening drives this year and we lead early because of it. Give this defense a lead and we are gonna win some important games.

  7. Dude Says:

“Give this defense a lead and we are gonna win some important games.”

Yup! You get the pass rush reps Joe & other buc fans have been dying to see, because you can’t rush the passer if the opposing offense is up 7-10 points on you coming out of halftime. They’re going to run the ball, and even if you get your offense the ball back(like we’ve seen) if they can’t cut into a score, guess what? That opposing offense is going to come back and run the ball at you some more to eat clock and try to close the game out.

  8. heyjude Says:

I am excited about the new OC and looking forward to the season more and more.

Chihuahua’s are tough dogs. Ask any delivery person and they will tell you. They fear them more. Look out for Baker this year, his 2nd year with us.

  9. Tbbucs3 Says:

If the Bucs have another lousy running attack then at some point we’ll have to stop blaming the OCs and blame Jason Lichts subpar history when it comes to drafting RBs….

Im still puzzled that when the Bucs clearly needed to add power, we draft another slow RB from the Pac 12 whos very undersized.

Bucky has crazy YAC numbers – and I wouldn’t call him slow. 40 yard dash numbers don’t mean a whole lot. Barry Sanders and Emmit Smith were not 40 yard clock fast, as example, but we’re very hard to get a clean shot on and bring down. Both did fairly well. Lol

    St. Pete,

Brother you better go back and watch Conan again because you got it wrong…

He doesn’t say anything about “their women”. That’s NOT how Conan rolled my man. What he DID say was the lamentations of “THE” women…..

Just keeping it real and keeping it tight and overall keeping it “real tight”.

Now with all of that cleared up I’d like to address Joe and the lack of appreciation for our current lead running back.

And here it is. Joe Doesn’t like him as the lead back. And that’s putting it nicely. What Joe wants is a phenom. That’s just how Joe is built. I can’t say that I disagree in wanting a Super Stud as our numerous one.

We haven’t had us another Cadillac Williams in a thousand years. And who knows how far Williams would have taken us if he didn’t get busted up. But I get it. Why settle for average to good when it seems a REAL DIFFERENCE MAKER comes through the draft each year? Because the truth is it’s maybe once every 3 or 4 years and maybe more that a Peterson, Zeke, Barkley etc. line up VS our “needs” and we are not such a position that we can actually take that phenom high (1st round) in the draft and add a TRUE “Barry Sanders” to our weapons array. It just has lined up that we’ve been able to FINALLY get OUR true GAME CHANGING weapon on the ground. The “Spear Tip” rather than the spear handle.

We ARE fortunate that we have a “running back” with SUCH GIFTED hands. But I get where Joe is coming from with his comments and desires.

HE’S THE KIND OF GUY THAT LOVES A “TRUE RUNNING” WEAPON. And he craves one BADLY. Well, so do I. Heck, I’ve got Caddy Williams autographed helmet in my man cave! I LOVE A TRUE RUNNING WEAPON TO! There’s just something about a guy that can make A LOT of guys look like confused monkeys as he teleports all over the field and runs it in for the touched down AGAIN AND AGAIN….. UNSTOPPABLE

    ^^^^^^^^
Will you please provide instances of Mayfield “barking like he’s tha man”? This reminds me of the clown that called him “Baker the Faker”, I asked how he was a “Faker”, other than it rhymes with Baker, and I never heard back.

  13. Ugo Says:

    Realistic-optimistic,

    Baker took a 1-31 browns team back to relevance;

    Took the Browns to the playoffs in 2020 (breaking a long streak of nit making the post-season), won a playoff game against a division rival and would have likely won the game against KC if not for an illegal helmet to helmet hit that was blatant foul yet not called;
    He jolted the injured Rams back to life;
He took the projected 5-6 win Bucs team to the playoffs and won one against the former season’s SB contenders

This chihuhua appears to be a medium to large sized dog. Does Baker waking up feeling dangerous make you upset?! Are you mad he succeeded Brady successfully when most others would have failed miserably?

  14. ^^mtn^^ Says:

With an expected improved running game & more WC short passes in Coen’s offense, about 25 pt/ game average should make the Bucs not only competitive, but respected.

A top 15 offense & top 10 defense would go a long way, maybe all the way

  15. realistic-optimistic Says:

Will you please provide instances of Mayfield “barking like he’s tha man”?

Maybe you should watch his Mic’d up sessions. “Get yer weight up” ring a bell? Wiping “slime” off his upper lip? Getting aroused because a WR broke free?

How about we take the words of his teammate, Jordan Whitehead:

Whitehead explained Mayfield is not a likeable guy among defensive players.

“He’s going to be competitive, like try to run you over, talk smack … [he’s] one of those quarterbacks that when you’re playing against him, you want to hate him,” Whitehead said.

    Okay, maybe you’re right.

  17. Dave Pear Says:

This is on the head coach, who yearns for 1974 football. It’s that simple. And that’s not going to change no matter how much better Coen is than Canales was.

Unless Jason lets Todd know in no uncertain terms, this is the real prove it year. No more excuses about cap, post Brady depression, whatever. Just win – and that happens best by the philosophy of outscoring the opponent (attack minded) versus keeping the opponent from scoring more than you (turtle minded). Of course you try to do both but it’s a matter of the strategy and emphasis that goes into gameplanning.

C’mon, Todd – you can evolve! Do it.

  18. stpetebucfan Says:

    Obvious

I appreciate your desire for accuracy and never mind being corrected. However I went back to the google machine and all the quotes referred to “their women”.

Having said that the quote you propose doesn’t really make a lot of sense…lamentation of the women…whose women? ALL the women even those on Conan’s side?

    R.O.

Again the most misuse of a name here on JBF. You’re neither “realistic” nor “optimistic”.

Just look at the quote you provided….“He’s going to be competitive, like try to run you over, talk smack” Is being competitive a bad thing or a sign of RESPECT from an opponent. You’re not real and you are certainly FAR from Optimistic. You post like a tool…er troll!

You don’t look at the half full/half empty glass as half full, you see 3/4 empty if it’s the Bucs and specifically Mayfield!

BTW as I suspect you know…”fan” is short for fanatic. Fanatic according to the Oxford Dictionary….Fanatic – a person filled with excessive and single-minded zeal. Notice it says NOTHING about room for objectivity.

Some people like to post their opinions based on their perceived football “expertise”. They wish to appear as objective even if they’re mistaken. I cool with that. I’m not a football expert, but I can see the OBVIOUS! As in you are NOT realistic and your misuse of the word “optimistic” is just absurd!!!

Again some help from the Oxford dictionary.
Optimistic – hopeful and confident about the future.

it’s 100% “their women” because after defeating your enemy taking your opponents women sounds more braggadocios then going back home to your old lady/ladies lol. I’m all for anybody that makes Conan references been watching that movie since the only college game you’d see on tv was Notre Dame

Hey realistic-optimistic, That “chihuahua” really Won the NFC South Division got us another Brady Banner. 3rd a row, He is enthusiastically in Tampa at OTA’s working toward a 4th! That same “chihuahua” lead our team to a Playoff Victory over the Eagles, and we were in it just about to the end against the Lions. Did you not see and watch these things happen in Real time or their Highlights? That “chihuahua” was also a Pro Bowl player for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers!
WHY ALL THE NEGATIVITY? Against Baker, I really wonder if you are a bucs fan. I am optimistic that you are.. yet your Realist-Optimist post show for what they are…

    GO!!!!!BUCS!!!!!

  24. drdneast Says:

That stat is what mystifies me about all the hand wringing being done by national sports columnists about Dave Canales’ departure.
Was he better than Lefto? Yes, of course. But you could say the same thing about my Golden Retriever.
There were just to many times and to long of stretches where Canales looked like the first year play caller that he was. Oftentimes it looked like he thought Bowles was standing behind him watching and listening to him calling plays.
During the home Saints game I was grinding my teeth due to the play calling.
Hopefully Coen can do much better. It certainly won’t take much.

  25. garro Says:

I am not sure Todd understands that if he can play with a lead it will make it far easier for him and his defense. Particularly if we are up by two scores or more.

Last year it was almost like we did not want to score early.

    Go Bucs!

  26. Drunkinybor Says:

That why Gruden won and Dungy could not. His whole philosophy was keep it close, grind it out, boring Buc ball. I just watched a Falcons game back in the 2000s and wow Shaun King was a horrible q.b. A top 20 q.b. could have won us super bowls back then. Our defense was amazing. Marcus Jones had 10 sacks at that time, Sapp had 10.5, we were leading the league in sacks. I watched 3 sacks in a row until Chris Chandler was knocked out of the game. But a punchless offense got what it deserved in the end. To go home early and watch another team take the crown.

  27. Dave Pear Says:

Applause to the last string of posts.

Todd must evolve to this vision or he will be opening a chain of sports fitness academies in March of 2025.
