Minicamp Practice Notes Day 3

June 13th, 2024

Baker Mayfield takes a snap during drills Thursday as offensive line coach Kevin Carberry (far right) observes. It was the final minicamp practice of the offseason.

The phrase of the day often tossed out and heard at One Buc Palace this morning was, “Last day of school.”

Today was the final day of minicamp practice and it isn’t a stretch to say that by the time you read this here post, some player or several Bucs players may already have boarded a plane at TPA headed somewhere across the globe to enjoy the precious weeks of freedom until training camp begins in late July.

Bucs coach Todd Bowles kept it brief. It was maybe an hour of practice, at least half was position drills. In fact, Joe did not see Baker Mayfield or the No. 1 offense take a snap in 7-on-7 drills or 11-on-11.

Instead, the vast majority of snaps were taken by Kyle Trask. Wave those orange and blue flags!

As Joe noted this morning, veteran team leader, franchise icon and oft-suspended pass rusher Randy Gregory was not at minicamp practice today (again), which meant he fully blew off mandatory minicamp.

This guy Gregory has averaged less sacks a season this decade than Joe Tryon-Shoyinka. That is, when the NFL has allowed him on the field. Enough. Turn the page. Give the snaps to someone who may have a future with the team and equally important, wants to play like Markees Watts or weekday warrior José Ramirez.

So here are some brief highlights on a brief practice, with a lot of throws from Trask:

* Interesting defensive line drill. The defensive linemen slam a blocking dummy, shed the “block” and then sky to either catch a volleyball or throw it back in the “quarterback’s” face. Why use a volleyball? Why not a football? Dudes aren’t trying to pick off volleyballs on Sundays.

* Rakim Jarrett hauls in a Trask pass over the middle.

* Kyle Vick! Dropping back to pass Trask sets up in the pocket, sees no one open and bolts up the middle for a first down.

* Sean Tucker alert! Orange Nation celebrates as Tucker takes a handoff, runs left, turns up field near the sideline and maybe gets six yards.

* Nimble Trask: Trask takes a handoff, rolls right two or three steps, then jumps and floats a short, rainbow pass to Sterling Shepard down the right seam. Looks like something Slingin’ Sammy Baugh or Sid Luckman or (gasp!) Tim Tebow would throw.

* Jarrett comes across the middle from the left side, hauls in a Trask pass and somersaults after catching the pass. No, it was not on purpose. Field looked to be slightly damp from the morning dew.

* Trask fires to the left sideline for Devin Culp and either Culp ran the route too short or Trask led him a step too far. Culp skies for the pass but it’s just over his fingertips.

* Running back D.J. Williams (Arizona) catches a pass in the left flat and runs for maybe four or five yards.

* Trask fires into a crowd and squeezes the ball between defenders hitting Jarrett along the right sideline. Linebacker Vi Jones (North Carolina State) jumped the route and missed allowing Jarrett to make a nice gain. Big gain, actually.

* And… your 2024 minicamp comes to a welcomed end with Trask completing a pass to Shepard over the middle.

See ya’ at training camp.

    Thanks Joe!

“Kyle Vick!…. bolts up the middle for a first down.” LOL – Nice

Sounds like Jarrett intends to try and force the Bucs to keep 6 receivers on the active roster this year….

    Go Trask Go

  3. AL121976 Says:

Seems like Trask will be the first drafted QB to sign a second contact

  4. Joe Says:

Have seen no mention of Wolford in these practices. Is he on another field?

Joe honestly takes a break when the third team scrubs are on the field. The general interest in Amazon drivers and Jiffy Lube oil change specialists and UFL players just isn’t there.

  5. ^^mtn^^ Says:

Great to see no RW mentions or quotes.

Bad enough I have to skip over all the articles on him 🙂

  6. BillyBucco Says:

In other news, Atlanta was found GUILTY of tampering and ONLY lost a 5th round pick and measly fines. Way to set an example Roger. SMDH

  7. Joe Says:

Great to see no RW mentions or quotes.

    “RW?” Rachaad White? Richard Williamson?

If it’s White, hard to type up any notes on the guy since the first team offense didn’t take any snaps.

  8. BillyBucco Says:

So in your opinion, Tyrek Funderburk and Kalen Deloach and CO. won’t be a part of this team?

  9. Biff Barker Says:

    Thanks Joe.

Spot on about Gregory. He’s got more baggage than Delta!

  10. Booger Says:

I guess the volleyball doesn’t hurt like a football would since you’re throwing it at your QB’s face!?

Even JOE (either one) should be able to figure out there’s no Richard Williamson articles to skip over 🙂

Maybe the “quarterback” — eerrr, assistant coach — should be wearing a helmet with a lineman’s face mask. LOL

But you are right, NFL footballs are rock hard.

When you use only abbreviations for names, you leave it open for guessing. And if Joe has to guess, it means it is not obvious.

    Ha!

  15. StickinUp4Centers Says:

Oh you didn’t hear? With the new kickoff rules, onside kicks are now 11 on 11 volleyball sets.

  16. Funderstruck Says:

I’m genuinely interested in Funderburk, but I don’t expect Joe to be! His last name is nearly identical to my own, so unless you paid attention to Ohio State basketball in the early ‘90s (or NC State ball about a decade ago), that opportunity just doesn’t happen! If he makes the team, he will have at least one jersey sale that isn’t to his actual family!

  17. Joe Says:

Joe was a big fan of Lawrence Funderburke. 🙂

See if anyone knows his story? He was a big influence on this here very website. No joke!

    @ Joe

    Where is Robert Hainsey?

Has he been working at LG at all?

    Joe Says:
Why use a volleyball? Why not a football?

Perhaps some very astute coach has determined that under those circumstances it would be more difficult to catch a volleyball due to it’s design. Footballs are designed to be caught.

If that’s the case, maybe coaching has taken a step forward.

    ^^^^^^^
Sure…He was the backup in high school, wasn’t he?

  24. Booger Says:

Ohhh, okay LoL, gotcha Joe! That’s funny. I was gonna say… I could really ‘picture it’ – DLinemen gettin’ out and slingin’ volleyballs at Trask’s dome and then watching them clank off of his face mask, or a football thrown just perfectly, where it sticks there, right between his eyes LoL. I thought Lord, those footballs are really ‘pointy’ and hard as a rock… That sounds kinda dangerous, especially if one of them was p’ed-off real good and had a grudge or bone to pick Haha.

  25. heyjude Says:

Thank you for the practice notes, Joe.

Loved this – too funny! “Jarrett comes across the middle from the left side, hauls in a Trask pass and somersaults after catching the pass. No, it was not on purpose. Field looked to be slightly damp from the morning dew.”

@Boss – No to Trask being the starter. We have our starter, Baker Mayfield.

  26. Booger Says:

I remember Ol’ Lawrence very well, Funderstruck!

  27. Booger Says:

Huge big-time recruit. It was WILD. Seemed like a day didn’t go by without there being an article written about him in the Louisville paper, & Lexington, for awhile! Wow, tho… Now, that’s a name/blast from the past!

  28. Crickett Baker Says:

I heard from another site that Wolford was there and did make a pass which was pretty good. Hainsey played yesterday and was even the center for a play or two.

    TYSM for these notes, Joe

  29. Mostly Peaceful Trask Fan Says:

Nice to see Trask get reps with the junior squad, and it’s good to have a backup you think can play, but Baker got the contract he’s the guy.

Trask will suit up for this and be ready if he’s needed. I think everyone’s default assumption is unless something drastic happens, Trask will be a pro and do what is expected of him and then on 2025 seek out an opportunity where he can start.

  30. Dave Pear Says:

Trashk proves his MVP caliber clipboard skills today . Rejoice!

Can’t wait for the “Trashk outplayed Mayfield” yammer.

  31. stpetebucfan Says:

There doesn’t need to be a QB controversy!!! Mayfield is the starter and Trask is his backup. That’s not necessarily a slam on Trask. Only if people believe Mayfield sucks which clearly is not the case.

There is no shame for Trask paying his dues! Aaron Rodgers sat for three years before he started. Yes Mayfield is no Favre but then again Trask is no Rodgers!

Both Buc QB’s have talent! Mayfield has shown his under the big lights, Trask hasn’t had the chance YET.

  32. Joe Says:

Joe: Didn’t Funderburke start off at Indiana as a hotshot recruit?

Yes! In the middle of the season, freshman year if memory serves, quit. He later transferred to Ohio State after nearly ending up at Missouri.

Thinking that recruiting class with Funderburke ended up as Knight’s last Final Four team.

  33. Noo Joisy Boy Says:

stpetebucfan Says: “Yes Mayfield is no Favre but then again Trask is no Rodgers!”

You’re half right. We have plenty of playing evidence that Mayfield is no Favre. But, we have no real playing evidence what Trask is, so he cannot legitimately be compared to Rodgers or anyone else with years of playing stats. That said, if you insist on it, when Rodgers, from the bench, had thrown only 16 passes, he had a passer rating of 39.8; when Trask, from the bench, had thrown only 9 passes, he had a passer rating of 42.4. What say you?

  34. Brandonbucc Says:

It’s practice. Can’t tell a thing until they compete.

  35. stpetebucfan Says:

    Noo Joisy Boy

I say not nearly enough stats to make any real conclusions.

BTW I’m sure you’re younger than me, everybody is, so Jersey Boys to me are the 4 Seasons. However I certainly respected Southside Johnny and his far more famous Asbury Park successor Bruce Springsteen and I was also a big fan of yet another “Jersey boy” Jon Bon Jovi.

Gotta give up to the Garden State for growing plenty of awesome rockers!!!

  36. Dave Pear Says:

Another idiot saying “we have no evidence” about #2.

Unless you collect a paycheck from the Buccaneers, that’s exactly right.

The people paid to evaluate him have deemed him 3rd string caliber. With millions of dollars and jobs at stake, no one is keeping a superior player on the bench.

Stop the tarded conspiracy nonsense, maroons.

  37. Joe Says:

Huge big-time recruit. It was WILD. Seemed like a day didn’t go by without there being an article written about him in the Louisville paper, & Lexington, for awhile! Wow, tho… Now, that’s a name/blast from the past!

Now that was smart! And those two papers are actually still doing well, considering…

Joe was working for a suburban Kansas City paper at the time. Kansas City, if you believe the locals, is the hotbed of college basketball. When Funderburke bolted Indiana and showed up on Norm Stewart’s front door, people freaked.

Joe, in the winter months was a copy editor, ran two stories in the heat of the “controversy.” When Joe planned for a third straight day with a Funderburke story, Joe’s editor nixed it said Joe was spending too much time on Funderburke.

Joe argued there was nothing folks were more interested in than that. (This was pre-internet, pre-Rivals, etc.). Didn’t do any good. Editor put the kibosh on future Funderburke stories.

Joe thought that was idiotic at the time and still does. And indirectly, this site proves Joe’s news sense was much better than three higher-ups who all got laid off from newspapers and the only guy still in journalism is working for an agriculture magazine writing about soybeans.

Yet, JoeBucsFan is a powerhouse in NFL circles.

  38. SAL Says:

    @ Dave Pear

The Bucs “have deemed Trask 3rd string caliber”? Is that why he was #2 all last season and is #2 right now in camp with Wolford on a distant field playing with truck drivers? LMAO. What a frikin’ idiot.

  39. Hodad Says:

Receivers sometimes practice catching tennis balls?

  40. unbelievable Says:

    “Kyle Vick!” lmao.

    Thanks for the notes Joe!

  41. realistic-optimistic Says:

Aaron Rodgers sat for three years before he started. Yes Mayfield is no Favre but then again Trask is no Rodgers!

Interesting comparison, @stpetebuc. Not sure if you remember, but people were not universally sold on Rodgers coming out of Cal. He was coached there by Jeff Tedford, who did not have a good reputation for producing quality NFL QBs (despite several picked in round 1).

Remember Dilfer? Akili Smith? How about David Carr, Joey Harrington, and Kyle Boller? All were sent into the league by Tedford. All sporting that stupid high-elbow posture. All were trash. Rodgers also had that stupid throwing posture. If I were a betting man, I would have bet on him failing just like Tedford’s other pupils (glad I didn’t bet! lol).

My point? How do you know the quality of a player if they never play?

Truth be told, I don’t think Trask is even half the player Rodgers was/is. But, we won’t definitively know until he leaves Tampa and somebody gives him a bite of the apple.

  42. stpetebucfan Says:

    R-O

I was aware that Rodgers dropped dramatically in the draft and wasn’t viewed as a particularly exciting prospect. I did not know the reason. THX for the explantion.

Agree that we won’t know until Trask gets a chance and I do hope it’s with another team, since if he plays well here there WILL be a QB controversy. It would also mean Baker went down due to injury.

  43. realistic-optimistic Says:

I seriously think GB spent those 3 years fixing his idiotic throwing posture. Watch his Cal highlights, then watch his first NFL season as a starter. Totally different posture.

  44. Oneilbuc Says:

If Pete Carol was the HC Trask would have been the starter last year because he believes in the players should play. He believes in real competition and that’s why coaches like Bowles will always be losers being a HC . Bowles is a DC not a good HC . But I know in 3 months it will be he Bowles fault, he has a new OC or he don’t have a running game and he don’t have a O line watch and see lol 🤣🤣

  45. Joe in Michigan Says:

Oneilbuc: Pete Carroll would play the guy that gave him the best chance at winning, which is exactly what Bowles did last year with Mayfield.

  46. NCBuc Says:

Rejoice Baker Bois! All unite now! That damn Trask couldn’t outplay our savior and leader Baker Mayfield! There, I got it started for you! Minus the fact I don’t a spit about Trask

  47. NCBuc Says:

Pearless….. that was just for you

  48. Craig Says:

Trask will play well enough to be able to move on. Maybe he will be a starter elsewhere next season, and will haunt Bowles forever.

  49. Joe in Michigan Says:

Ah Craig, living in his little fantasy world…Trask is the MVP who’ll get Bowles fired…That’s the best fantasy you can come up with, Craig? 🤔

  50. Dave Pear Says:

So, all you Trashk lovers – explain the conspiracy.

Why keep the best player down? Why would Jason and Todd conspire to mute a great quarterback?

    Go ahead. Non-idiots are listening.

  51. Booger Says:

Haha. Wow. That’s an awesome story! That editor must not have had a clue. Crazy. That was quite a recruiting battle. There wasn’t a day that went by, when there wasn’t something new and crazy going on. It seriously, DOMINATED the news… At least in in that middle part of the country anyway. I really liked Norm Stewart, when I was a kid. They had something on him a little while back (maybe during COVID) on SECnetwork… It was nice. I really enjoyed it and seeing that he was still alive! But, you had all those schools up there going to WAR over that kid… A different rumor everyday, & some VERY hard feelings. Wow, it was bitterrrrr. Front page story almost everyday (at least the sports page), in both Lexington AND Louisville. Louisville Fans HATE Indiana worse than UK Fans do, I believe.

  52. Bucben61 Says:

“If Pete Carol was the HC Trask would have been the starter last year because he believes in the players should play*

Why do so many Baker haters believe last year was a failure.

  53. Oneilbuc Says:

Buc61. I don’t think it was a failure for a quarterback like Baker it was his best season. But his best season is below average for great quarterbacks . And yes we have the proof from last training camp and you know it. Baker was gifted the staring job he didn’t earn it. You would have chosen Matt Flynn over Russell Wilson. Pete Carroll chose Wilson over Flynn and the Seahawks traded for Flynn and paid him . But Pete Carroll chose Russell Wilson because he out played Matt Flynn in training camp he played the guy who was better in camp and preseason. Baker didn’t play much at all last year because he was named the starter according to IRA and Baker had 8 picks with the starters to Kyle Trask 1 pick with the starters. That’s why till this day no one has came out and said Baker was better than Trask the coaches and the front office. I don’t know what kind of quarterback Trask would be as a starter but he was better than Baker and I think that’s why people say what they say about Trask in camp last year. But mainly what do that tell you about Baker who’s been in the NFL for 6 years as a starter ? Baker had some great teams in Cleveland the year you guys keep talking about Baker had 2 good runningbacks

  54. Oneilbuc Says:

And with a good receiver core and a good TE. Not to mention he had one of the best offensive line in the NFL that year. He was in a perfect situation and please stop bringing up those 2 bad seasons Cleveland had because Hue Jackson sused the Cleveland Browns because they paid him extra money to tank those 2 seasons . And every body knows that I also believe he sused the NFL as well.

  55. garro Says:

Thanks for yet another outsatnding recap of worthless preseason underwear football. Bucs style.

Interesting to me that Trask threw a jump pass (‘a la Tebow). Was that the play call or an improv? Would be interesting to know if that was in the play book. Seriously.

    Go Bucs!

  56. Shane Callahan Says:

Way to go Trask! Certainly makes me feel a tiny bit better if Baker gets hurt.

  57. Shane Callahan Says:

Also heard that one of Trask’s jobs is to audio record playcalls to help the offensive players learn the new offense during off-hours. Way to go Trask! What a teammate!
