“Joe Tryon Was Supposed To Be A Lot Better”

June 20th, 2024

Too many snaps, too little production.

It’s been the story of Joe Tryon-Shoyinka’s career. He’s super durable and looks the part, but he just doesn’t get the job done. In three seasons since the Bucs made him their first-round pick, JTS has a whopping 2,100 career snaps and just 14 sacks. That includes the postseason.

Todd Bowles’ friend Pat Kirwan, the former Jets linebackers coach and personnel executive, sort of threw his hands in the air about Tryon-Shoyinka during his SiriusXM NFL Radio show today.

“Joe Tryon was supposed to be a lot better. … Joe, you gottta be able to go better than this,” Kirwan said. “

Kirwan seems a bit flummoxed by JTS because he considers Bowles to be a great defensive coach and he likes the effort from JTS. Per Kirwan, another year of workaround is coming because Bowles “will recognize this” weakness at edge rusher and “the pressure will come from everywhere.”

Joe wonders how much Tryon-Shoyinka will see the field. He played about 35 percent of the postseason snaps in January, and the Bucs didn’t draft Chris Braswell in Round 2 to see if he likes to watching the action.

Yeah, Bowles says Tryon-Shoyinka is a wildly versatile and valuable piece. But Joe is confident Bowles would prefer to stop playing so much chess and play more checkers, aka having four guys effectively rush the passer without getting creative to cover for weaknesses.

In all, Kirwan gave Bucs edge rushers a “12” grade out of 20, largely because he likes their depth and respects their tackles for loss totals.

For an OLB, JTS is extremely weak. He has absolutely no power to his game. It’s odd that after 3 years he hasn’t seemed to gain an ounce of strength or an extra pound of muscle

  2. Guzzie55 Says:

Some guys just look like tarzan plays like jane, and that wont fly when everyone looks like tarzan

  3. Buc4evr Says:

Can’t get to the QB, can’t set the Edge, can’t get by a single blocker, but is very athletic and runs around a lot. Always seems to get to the QB a second late. Nothing will change. No contract after this season.

  4. FrontFour Says:

Spot on Guzzie55… same with OJ Howard.

  5. Bobby Says:

Isn’t JPP is still available??? Bet he has something left even though he is older in NFL years. He definitely would do better than JTS and Logan Hall. Bring JPP back for one more season, come on Jason. JPP Vea,Kancey, and Yaya. I like the sound of that 4 man front.

  6. Pickgrin Says:

If JTS is not looking greatly improved – then Braswell, Watts and Ramirez will all get their chances to shine.

We only need 1 of those 4 players to break out of the pack and prove himself a worthy starter.

I’m not that worried about our pass rush this year. Believe it will be greatly improved. Partly because I’m thinking Kancey is ready to show why the Aaron Donald comparisons are valid……

  7. SenileSenior Says:

Bowles “playing checkers” would please some his critics here.😳 Oh well. ☺️

  8. Mark Says:

Dude had a first ballot Hall of Fame DT for 7 seasons and had a top 10 defense only one of those years

  9. dmatt Says:

Com on man…let’s call it for what it is, JTS is a bust. He has speed with no power n no football intelligence. KJ Britt has no speed but he has power n football intelligence. JTS is still trying to learn how to play on the nfl level, won’t happen and can’t happen because he doesn’t have the will nor ability to make it happen. Whenever he makes a play it’s the result of his teammate pressuring the qb into his arms. I’m sorry but I’ve watch too many plays where he’s playing like a lost kid. I’ll take Markee Watts over him any day.

  10. Todd Rolls Says:

When he added shoyinka I knew he was a bust

  11. kgh4life Says:

JTS is a speed rusher only, so he’s one trick pony. When a pass rusher isn’t multi faceted in his approach he’s easy to defend.

  12. Larrd Says:

    Amen, Todd Roles!

    LOL

  13. Pelsbuc61 Says:

Hopefully trade him and Hall for a cup of coffee.

  14. Beeej Says:

I never hear about him gaining 15 pounds of muscle weight

  15. dmatt Says:

I never hear about him gaining 15 ounces of muscle memory.

  16. Beeej Says:

I just see him bounce off tackles like a pinball, no change in 3 years

  17. Jarrett Says:

I wish we would trade up in the draft for a dominant edge rusher.

Also, Chase Young was available ?

Just don’t get why we won’t go after big name guys like Chase Young or even Jadevon Clowney when they are on the open market.

It’s so many guys you can name the Bucs don’t go after in free agency that could make a difference for this team

    Esp for Edge Rush

    Make it make sense

  18. Jarrett Says:

I guess we were too busy making Winfield Jr the highest paid to sign a guy that was just in the Super Bowl like Chase Young.

I don’t care if Winfield balled out, the Bucs secondary was still shaky and the Lions Running back toasted him for a touchdown in the playoffs.

Similar to how Cooper Kupp absolutely TOASTED Winfield the year we lost to the Rams.

Winfield should’ve just played this year on the franchise tag. We had other holes on this roster to fill.

    It’s a Bucs Life.

  19. Crickett Baker Says:

The way the draft room cheered when we got him made me expect great things. I guess he has disappointed everyone.

  20. Dave Pear Says:

The headless chicken will be marketing facial cosmetics for men in about nine months.

  21. kgh4life Says:

    @Jarrett

What has Chase Young actually done in the NFL? Except getting injured. He’s in the same situation like JTS. All hype no results.

  22. Crunchbuc76 Says:

I said he was a bust his first season. He is what I knew he was.

  23. Scott Says:

He is still our highest graded edge rusher. That says a lot.

  24. August1976Buc Says:

JTS Looks like Tarzan plays like Jane.
He is a known commodity, time to upgrade. He is not the answer.

Just like Carlton Davis and the secondary. As long as Carlton was here, we saw their ceiling, the Bucs were never going to improve. The Secondary has underwhelmed for a long time. If you do not make changes, than you are guaranteed to stay the same or decrease, and will not get better.

The same with JTS, we have seen his ceiling long ago, and it is not up to par by any means.

How much longer will JTS be here?

NFL- Not For Long with him.

GO BUCS… cut the drift wood loose, and sail on.

  25. Florida made me Says:

    You can’t tell

  26. Olly Says:

Every time a Semenhole fan says we should not have drafted 2021 2nd round pick Kyle Trask and taken a defensive player instead, I think of 2021 1st round bust JTS. Get it? LMAO.

  27. Bubby Says:

JTS never should have been drafted. He opted out of his senior year due to Covid. No fire in the belly. Just move on.

  28. Dude Says:

“Just don’t get why we won’t go after big name guys like Chase Young or even Jadevon Clowney when they are on the open market.”

Chase Young has been labeled a serial loafer, no thanks.

Clowney is a glass cannon at this point in his career.

  29. Michael Says:

Maybe they should just move him to inside LB and let him learn from LD before he retires. He will loose more and more snaps on the outside.

  30. Dave Pear Says:

JTS looks like Jane as well as plays like Jane. He’s done. He shouldn’t even make the team, but he will.

  31. BucsfaninOregon Says:

I’ve been ragging on this guy for 2 seasons now. Sick of hearing things like, “He had a great Bear game so let’s ride with him.” He did nothing the second half of the season. Actually that’s wrong– -he took a roster spot.

  32. D-Rok Says:

Oh man, I had to turn off the radio right as the Bucs segment came on. 12/20…that’s prolly a fair grade.

But Joe, I am interested to learn how Kirwan graded the other 3 teams in our division. Got any intel on that?? Thanks in advance.

  33. Mike Says:

I’m an eternal optimist and even I hold out little hope for JTS to turn things around.

  34. My Momma Says:

All you have to do is read though JTS’ s social media to get an idea of where his heads at.

  35. SlyPirate Says:

    NICE! ANOTHER JTS SUCKS ARTICLE?

    Stale. Boring. Dead horse.

The Bucs announced they’ve moved on when they drafted Braswell. We should do the same.

    LET’S TALK BRASWELL

There is so much great content here …

    >Best pure rusher in the draft? CB has a higher pass rush rating than Dallas Turner, Chop Robinson, and is tied with Latu. Verse was the best Edge in the draft (hate that we didn’t get him) but Braswell is tied for #2.

    But is he? …

    >Miscount = Steal? The NCAA mistakenly recorded CB with 8 sacks. PFF watches all the tape and said CB clearly had 11. 11!!!! Same number as Dallas Turner (17th pick) with 100 less snaps. If CB had been awarded 11, he would have gone in the first.

    >Those Arms!!!! CB knows how to his long arms to gain space from the OT and then explode into the play. Watch his highlights. Goedeke is a solid OT. I’m hoping to hear CB gives Goedeke problems in camp.

    >Perfect Scheme Fit. Alabama needed Dallas to play a 4-3 edge. He’s bigger better equipped for it. CB is a 3-4 OLB. He can rush but he can also drop. CB has several splash plays (Pick 6 and Scoop and Score) from the OLB position. He’s the perfect fit in Bowles’ D.

    >Pro Comparable (combine)
    CB: 6’3, 253lbs, 33″ arms, 4.6-40, 1.59-10 yard split
    Yaya: 6’3, 260lbs, 33″ arms, 4.5-40, 1.56-10 yard split

Are you kidding? 2xYayas plus CK and Vea. Wow! Should be fun!

  36. GP Says:

I wonder, who on this thread, would actually admit to, and eat their words, if JTS has a breakout year and gets double digit sacks?

  37. Toad bowels Says:

I would. So would Jason Lite and Bruce Aryans.

  38. Mike Johnson Says:

Bowles loves this guy. But us fans knew after 2 seasons he was a bust. And guess what? He will only be slightly better..And I say that with one eye closed..which equates to a notch below average this upcoming season. Sorry harry, you to much weight to carry. Been past time to move on from this guy.

  39. Drunk Bucs Fan Says:

What’s a bit different with JTS is nothing says he isn’t trying, studying, etc. Never heard a bad thing about him as a person and seems like a good teammate. All the criticism comes from the fact that he just isn’t very good at his job.

If by some miracle he becomes what we hope he could be I think the fanbase would turn around and show him the love. Trust me, we really want him to be good.

  40. Dave Pear Says:

Trying hard is a great attribute.

Sucking after trying hard seals the deal.

Facial foundation and blush….for men….from Jane Trieshard Showinski (Gene D called him Showinski on a broadcast, LOL).
