Is Haason Reddick Available Again?

June 6th, 2024

Haason Reddick isn’t embracing his new shade of green.

Up at New York Jets spring practices, general manager/QB Aaron Rodgers is impressing folks with his arm talent and movement.

But beastly pass rusher Haason Reddick, who was set to join Rodgers after an offseason trade, has yet to be seen — and apparently heard.

Reddick had 27 sacks over the past two seasons with the Eagles. And that sacks total jumps to a whopping 50 1/2 over the last four seasons, which included his final season in Arizona and a 2021  stop with the Panthers.

Reddick, 29, is a premier edger rusher with a heck of a story. Bucco Bruce Arians made him a first-round pick in Arizona and said at at the time he was a better prospect than Patrick Mahomes and other quarterbacks in that 2017 draft, and then Arians didn’t use Reddick much at outside linebacker.

Later Cardinals regimes didn’t either, primarily because Reddick is undersized, but Reddick finally got his way in 2020 and was dominant off the edge.

The rest his history but now Reddick is icing out his new team. New York media and Jets fans are in freakout mode because Reddick hasn’t attended spring practices and credible reports say he isn’t talking to the new coaching staff.

ESPN says Reddick wants a new contract.

Joe brings this all up because the Bucs are aching — or should be — for a better and scary edge rush. It’s why they just drafted Chris Braswell in Round 2. Joe wanted Reddick in Tampa, but the Bucs weren’t dealing and he went to the Jets on April 1.

Joe gets it. It was a Bucs front office decision. And perhaps the Eagles had no interest in trading Reddick to Tampa Bay, the team that obliterated them in the playoffs. And maybe Reddick hates Florida.

But maybe, just maybe, there’s a new opening now for the Bucs to get Reddick. If Buccaneers Ring of Honor general manager Jason Licht gets Tristan Wirfs’ new deal done, then he likely would have salary cap flexibility to take on a fat Reddick contract.

Perhaps the Jets would be willing to take Joe Tryon-Shoyinka and then go out and sign veteran pass rusher Emmanuel Ogbah or Yannick Ngakoue off the street?

Yeah, Joe’s a dreamer, but a pass rush is always worth fantasizing. It’s often the difference between playing in January and playing February.

    Oh, this again?

  2. Lt. Dan Says:

Dang it Joe! I thought / hoped that the “always worth fantasizing” link was going to take me a to a picture of the very fetching “Rachel the swashbuckler”, your favorite crush, and not a pic of a business like Todd Bowles. You baited and switched me.

  3. George R Says:

Joe this is a reason the Bucs were not interested in Reddick. He might be a locker room cancer. He hasn’t played one down for his new team and he wants a new contract. He held many times in his career.

  4. Mord Says:

Part of me is just here to have a comment under Mort’s

The other part, hard to imagine him being available (via trade or cut) even in these circumstances

  5. OrlandoBucFAn Says:

Isn’t this the same Joe who thinks hope is a dirty word, but loves to fantasize? I get it. There is no hope for Kate Upton, but you can always dream.

  6. Booger Says:

Saw this yesterday. That’s a hard pass. Unless, maybe a deadline move if 7-1/6-2 and a major contender.

  7. Dude Says:

    Pipe dream.

  8. SB~LV Says:

If I recall the Bucs FO and the Jets Jets Jets have a working relationship a touch more personal than with most other teams.
    Hmmmmm….

  9. The Truth be Told Says:

Never going to happen. Who was the last Big Name Free Agent the Bucs signed TB12? It is just not their SOP these days. Home grown and resign. Let’s get Baked! Go Bucs.

  10. BakerFan Says:

You got it right, you are a dreamer.

  11. heyjude Says:

Wow, that would be great. However, the OTAs are not mandatory so it could be nothing. But we can dream. Sort of like playing the lottery and dreaming of hitting it.

  12. Brian in St Pete Says:

4 teams since 2020 and a no show at his new stop? Not a great look. IMO I’d rather roll with the guys we have and hope one of them develops into a game wrecker. Watts has “Shaq Barrett 2.0” written all over him.

  13. The Truth be Told Says:

Joe I am surprised that you think this is a Real Possibility. This team has gone out of its way to keep their current players happy. Bringing in an Outsider and redoing his deal that would be having him making more money than everyone else is not something that is likely to happen based on recent history. Would he be a great addition? Yes of course-but not likely at all. You are Dreaming.

  14. SlyPirate Says:

    FAITH VS CAUTIOUS OPTIMISM …
Licht has faith this team can win. Fans have faith the team can win. But … It’s not the 2020 level of faith. It’s not a push all your chips in for shot at the ring type of faith.

    AT LEAST NOT YET …
If the Bucs start strong and look like a contender, Licht could trade for a pass rusher. He knows JPP, Suh, and Shaq won the SB as much as TB12.

    MY PREFERENCE …
Khalil Mack. If SD stumbles out of the gate, KM will be available.

  15. Alanbucsfan Says:

Haason Reddick goes in the Devin White category of he’s past his prime and is no longer worth a lofty investment

  16. gbobucsfan Says:

Khalil Mack to the Bucs in Week 4

  17. gofortheface30 Says:

Oh hell yea brother lets give a soon to be 30yr old Edge Rusher a massive contract. Those are prime NBA Superstar years but not the NFL. The Lavonte Davids of the world are the exception, not the norm.

  18. John Sinclear Says:

Joe – While you’re dreaming, think you can dream up about $20 million in loose cash to make your dream come true. Maybe just go back to dreaming about Rachael Watson?

  19. A Bucs Fan Says:

I get it Joe, but OLB is not a strictly pass rushing position in Bowles defense. His OLB’s must be able to drop and play zone coverage to get on the field to allow his exotic secondary blitz’s to work. It’s like he tries to rush the passer from the back 7 just as much or more than the front four at times.

All that said I don’t see Reddick as a fit for the Bucs even though it appears they would benefit from another veteran pass rusher.

  20. Jake been there since the beginning Says:

I don’t know, could be nice but what kinda message would all the guys we have now get from signing him ?? I think people will get a surprise when the pads come on. Go Bucs!!!!

  21. Defense Rules Says:

Joe … ‘If Buccaneers Ring of Honor general manager Jason Licht gets Tristan Wirfs’ new deal done, then he likely would have salary cap flexibility to take on a fat Reddick contract.’

That’s the kind of thinking Joe that got us into CAP he11, and HOPEFULLY Licht has learned his lesson & not repeat that same mistake. You can only push so much salary CAP to the future because ultimately you’ve gotta pay the piper. We spent last year paying for stocking up for Tom Brady in 2022 & all it got us was an 8-9 record. And yes Bucs were fortunate IMO to go 9-8 last season (could’ve just as easily been 8-9 or less if not for last-second saves).

Tristan is on-the-books right now for $18.6 mil CAP Hit. Bucs are doing good with $9.8 mil CAP space (ranked #22) with only Barton & Braswell yet to sign. That’ll still leave us a little wiggle room to maybe pick up 1 or even 2 vets IF we need to prior to Game 1. Wirfs will probably be getting $25-$30 mil when he finally does do a new contract, and pushing too much of that to future years would not bode well for 2025 or 2026 (we’ve already pushed a BUNCH to those years with Mayfield, Winfield & Evans contracts (plus we’ll still have to pay off $29 mil in 2025 CAP hit for Shaq & Jensen).

But then again, why be concerned about it; that’s Licht’s problem not ours. Of course, I don’t see Jason standing at the front of the line to sign Reddick like Joe would be.

  22. The Fighting Schianoes Says:

Not gonna happen Joe. He’s obviously not a “Buccaneer Man”. They look for character. This guy seems like a cancer.

  23. Matt_PcAfee Says:

I would love to see a Chandler Jones article, haven’t seen one in a year or so

  24. Durango 95 Says:

    Flashback to Antonio Brown 2020.

    “He’s a locker room cancer.”

“Don’t want him anywhere near this team.”

    “Hard pass.”

    One Super Bowl victory later.

  25. Dude Says:

We don’t have a Tom Brady on the team vouching for Reddick tho and that’s the difference in this scenario.

  26. Dude Says:

Joe you had the NY part right, but wrong team wrong side of the ball. Sterling Shepard is a Buccaneer now. Sh!t is gettin real

  27. Show Me the TDs Says:

    Reddick for Godwin, straight up.

  28. Tom Edrington Says:

JOE is TOTALLY OBSESSED with this guy….stop it!!!

  29. ^^mtn^^ Says:

Haasan wanted a new contract which is what initiated trade IIRC.

    Trade for JTS? Really? LOL

JTS may just stay with the Bucs.

Even if he never lives up to his draft status, he may get a back up salary contract

Speaking of the Eagles, Devin White just wants to have fun:

Jason trades for Reddick the same day that Rachel Watson delivers 6 pizzas and a keg of Big Storm to JBF world headquarters.

Please. It is a long day still. No need to tease Joe like this. 🙂

  33. Dave Pear Says:

Hey, Joe — insider information! LOL.

  34. stpetebucfan Says:

Wow just wow Joe. This team is riding high with a GREAT locker room and team chemistry. I don’t care how great Reddick might be the team doesn’t need another head case in the locker room.

He’s not the final piece to an SB team. In order for the Bucs to even dream of reaching the SB they have to dream that Calijah, YaYa, and Braswell turn out to be the real deal. If they are the Bucs do not need Reddick.

  35. Joe Says:

Wow just wow Joe. This team is riding high with a GREAT locker room and team chemistry. I don’t care how great Reddick might be the team doesn’t need another head case in the locker room.

Does the name “Randy Gregory” ring a bell with you? “Team chemistry” ship has sailed. ***If*** Haason Reddick is a headcase, at least he produces.

  36. MelvinJunior Says:

I’m not sure Reddick is a “cancer.” I don’t know about all that. I think he just wants some ‘guaranteed’ money is all, since I heard yesterday, that he doesn’t have any at all, even for this upcoming season. Like, NONE of it is guaranteed. I don’t know how accurate that is, because I haven’t had enough interest to research it whatsoever, at all… It is just what I heard. It’s interesting tho, that when asked, Saleh said that they haven’t spoken a single word to each other, since the TRADE. So, I would have to chalk that up to just pure negligence. And, something else called… J.E.T.S. I mean, you trade for a guy giving up valuable ASSETS, & you haven’t even SPOKEN!? Shew. Anyway, these $25-$30-MIL per year ‘multi-year’ contracts (plus trading away assets) to players 30+ years old, are the exact deals that can destroy a franchise and landing them in BIG trouble down the road. The Bucs currently, are in a good enough position that they should try avoiding such, at all cost.

    ——-
We don’t have Reddick stripping to the waist and doing jumping jacks in the middle of a game in NYC. How silly do you want to make this. This is an apple and that is an orange. Your turn.

  38. Darin Says:

Let him sit out a year and he’ll see how much he makes. I wish more teams would take a stand. Let them play for the contract they signed already or don’t show up and get paid at all. Most of us call that Life

  39. stpetebucfan Says:

“Does the name “Randy Gregory” ring a bell with you? “Team chemistry” ship has sailed.”

Yes and I certainly take your point. I would simply respond that Gregory is not in a position to become a “head case” this year. If he is wildly successful and puts up a half dozen sacks then we’ll find out if he goes all swaggy on us.

As you point out Reddick HAS been successful which is part of what is driving him.
He wants to play “show me the money”. Not even sure what a “prove it” contract looks like for a guy who has already proven “it” big time.

BTW are we sure that Gregory will make the final roster if JTS and Hall play up to their potential or beyond. IE Is his contract guaranteed I do not recall.

  40. Brandonbucc Says:

    He’s a head case… no thanks

  41. Bobby Says:

If the Bucs have a great pass rush this season then we are talking super bowl contender. Go get Reddick, go get him Jason Licht.

  42. Rock Says:

He’s not a cancer. But he is an aging pash rusher, albeit a highly productive one, entering his 30s. He was dealt by Howie precisely because he wants a new contract, has been grumbling about it for over a year, and because they signed Huff early in FA. I’m absolutely baffled that Joe Douglas would trade for him without agreeing to terms prior to the trade. Jets gonna Jet.

  43. drdneast Says:

Reddick would be nice but lets remember the Bucs shut him out the both times they played him last season. It also sounds like Reddick wants the second kind of contract you give an OLB, not his third when he is getting up in age.

  44. Dave Pear Says:

The point made above is so solid – if you signed a contract, HONOR THE DAMN CONTRACT.

    Done yelling. Sorry.

  45. Dave Pear Says:

Props to Darin, I forgot who made the contract point. Thank you.

  46. garro Says:

    Dream on Joe! LOL

Besides do we want a guy who won’t show up?

    Go Bucs!

  47. Marc Dub Says:

This might be the single most dumbest article I’ve ever read in my entire life. Absolute click bait & unfortunately we all fell for it smh. This guy really believes the Jets would trade a player that they literally just traded for just because he didn’t show up to VOLUNTARY OTAs??? You’re delusional

  48. CTBucs Says:

Joe just stop. Put in on your wishlist for Santa and bring it up again. If i had a dollar for every time I read edgerusher here…
