Gerald McCoy: Bet On Baker Mayfield

June 19th, 2024

Bullish on Baker Mayfield, Bucs.

Maybe it is Sooners brotherhood that has former Bucs great Gerald McCoy so enthusiastic about a certain Heisman Trophy winner currently leading the Bucs? Either way, GMC is picking the Bucs to four-peat as NFC South champs.

And unlike so many of the national #NFLMedia that are picking the Bucs to suck because of Baker Mayfield, GMC said it is because of Mayfield that the Bucs will advance to their fifth postseason appearance in as many years.

Appearing last night on “The Insiders,” seen weeknights on NFL Network, GMC, who is part of the NFL Network family as co-host on NFL GameDay Morning, was clearly stoked talking about the Tampa Bay. And GMC pretty much said, ‘watch out haters, here comes Mayfield.’

GMC claimed that Mayfield was hurt in 2022 (when he last played for current Bucs offensive coordinator Liam Coen in Los Angeles) and spent most of the 2023 offseason rehabbing.

GMC said rehabbing and training are two very different things. This offseason, GMC said, Mayfield was training, not rehabbing, and Bucs fans and the NFL will see the difference come September.

“People don’t understand the difference between rehabbing and training,” GMC said. “When you train, it is a different mindset.”

Now that Mayfield and his Bucs teammates have settled in and know each other after a full season together, McCoy said, there is ample reason to expect the Bucs to pick up right where they left off.

“I was down there … and I talked to Baker Mayfield,” GMC said. “I’m telling you guys right now Baker Mayfield is the wrong guy to get the confidence that he’s down there with.

“He is so relaxed and comfortable with where he is at. But he still has that chip on his shoulder because people are thinking, ‘Maybe, it was a fluke?'”

Then, GMC basically hollered to the rest of the NFC South that the division goes through Tampa Bay — and the slimy Saints, the Dixie Chicks and the Stinking Panthers will just have to settle on battling for a wild card berth.

Joe hopes GMC is right on about Mayfield. The two have known each other for years. So GMC is offering key insight here.

Last I saw, it’s the only division we HAVE

  3. Buc4evr Says:

GMC was a great player and good to hear he is helping the youth in the inner city.

  4. Boss Says:

Does anyone need more proof I am right about bake?

  5. RamblingRhino Says:

    Oh What might
have been, McCoy and Jordan LVD…

  6. Jmarkbuc Says:

I can’t stand hearing him talk. He’s trying so hard to be relevant.

Can someone do a wellness check on Dooosh?

How many times last year did Mayfield face a pass rush up the middle? That won’t be the case this year. Give him a cleaner pocket with Evans and Godwin getting into their routes? Less pressure on 2nd and 3rd downs because they may pick up 4 or 5 yards on 1st down.

Baker can put up MVP numbers for the stat clowns.

    6-2 after first 8 games.

  8. Dude Says:

I don’t wanna hear from GMC, I wanna hear what Jeff Christensen has to say about Mayfields’ offseason and whether the two have worked together recently.

  9. Gerald Says:

I notice any time any1 says anything positive about Mayfield there’s 3 or 4 bozo the clown wana be Trass Clowns talking out they assss. Yall mad because you were DEAD wrong about Bake. Eat your hearts out Trasskies 😆.

Guy left our Bucs to go play for the Panties. He’s been a kiss ass since Brady arrived, trying to weasel his way into the Ring of Honor

Idiotic take. Bruce Arians didn’t re-sign him, which basically means he was fired, so he found a job. If you lost a job at whatever oil change place you work at, would you have a problem working at the oil change place across the street?

He’s not a kiss ass; he’s said several times he’s always been a Bucs fan.

  12. Usfbuc Says:

Improved oline and another year around the same players should improve his game which is why I am excited for this season. Connor Williams is reportedly ready to go and talking to teams, I would love for the Bucs to bring him in to compete, if he is fully recovered he is better than anyone we currently have at guard.

  13. Dave Pear Says:

Glad to have GMC as a Bucs fan. Ecstatic that BA packed him off and signed the real #93, Suh.

    Suh.

    Suh.

But Gerald is a smart guy, good listen when he talks. Entertaining. He doesn’t be,one in the Ring of Honor, but he’d be great in the booth with Gene D’s replacement.

  14. StormyInFl Says:

Some of you people need to move on from your GMC hate. Did his style irritate me (sorry Ben)? Yes.

But I don’t hold playing for the Panthers against him. Didn’t hurt the Bucs at all and the man is entitled to make a living. He didn’t quit on the Bucs – Arians launched him.

I’m glad he is involved and a fan. You guys would be complaining just as hard if he dogged the team, too.

  15. Buddha Says:

4,000 yd for a team that insisted on running the ball is never a fluke.

  16. SlyPirate Says:

    WHOA!!!!

GMC wasn’t the dominant force we hoped for BUT …

    He’s a really good dude!

    He’s always positive!

    He loves the Bucs!

    He’s LVD’s bestie!

    Stop the hate.

  17. heyjude Says:

We all know that Gerald McCoy doesn’t say something unless he really believes it. A another good point from him was comparing rehab and training. Yes, definitely different with a another type of mindset.

Love McCoy’s t-shirt on the X video. “Teenage daughter survivor!” So true. Kudos to him for the youth camp too! Miss all his Marvel superhero stuff. Always fun to see.

  18. Dave Pear Says:

    Suh >>>>> McCoy.

We don’t win the SB with McCoy in a 3-4.

  19. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

I have no problem at all with GMC. He was able to play a game that anyone on here can only fantasize about. And he is definitely right about one thing: the division goes through Tampa.

  20. Buc4evr Says:

Stop with the GMC hate. He was put in an impossible situation with a pathetic D. At times he was the only lineman getting any kind of push and could be double teamed, because no one else was doing anything. Put Suh or Vea in the same situation and you will get a similar result. I think the guy had 60 sacks and went to the pro bowl 6 times. What have you haters done?

  21. BakerBucs says duh Says:

Buc4ever what they do e hate & hate som mo

  22. Oneilbuc Says:

Bakerbucs . I don’t think you even seen one game of McCoy with a name like Bakerbucs I have to ask how long have you been a bucs fan? But to your point I do agree they hate every payer the bucs drafted that left do to contract or the team didn’t resign them. McCoy was a 6 time pro bowler and a 2 time all pro on a bad team. Watch if Evans leave they’re going to bash him to!! Lol 🤣🤣

  23. D-Rome Says:

I think GMC is very good on TV.

  24. unbelievable Says:

@Joseph C Simmons – well done on that correction, sir. People make up the weirdest things to justify their hatred.

GMC has always been vocal about being a lifelong Bucs fan, even after BA didn’t resign him.

So he didn’t end up being the 2nd coming of Warren Sapp. Ok? That’s not really his fault. You can criticize some things about his play and/or his passion to destroy the opponent, but at the end of the day he was still one of the better DTs in the league, despite never playing next to an even decent DE for his entire career outside of one year with Michael Bennet. He’s a good dude and sets a good example for younger folks.

And yes, Suh was obviously a much better player. Both things can be true.

  26. Dave Pear Says:

With a name like Oswueeltard and the hate for Tom Brady and Baker Mayfield while insisting we stick with JaMiss the turnover machine, it’s obvious who the one who doesn’t watch games is – it’s the Saints soon to be Browns fan.

McCoy was a nice guy. Not a great player. Good maybe.

I love McCoy but please spare me the McCoy opinions.

Another version of Beckless only Beckless is more of an asshat. I don’t care a thing about either ones opininions on the Bucs. He’s just another Ex player who somehow got on TV.

    Go Bucs
