Gene Deckerhoff Returns As Bucs Radio Voice

June 20th, 2024

Back for 2024.

By golly, he’s still with us.

A year ago there was some doubt whether the radio voice of the Bucs, Gene Deckerhoff, was going to return to the team. He had retired as the football and basketball voice of Florida State and doubt crept into the minds of several at One Buc Palace whether Deckerhoff would go full-blown retirement.

The door was left open for him last year. If he wanted the job, it was his. Not only did Deckerhoff stay with the Bucs, he’s coming back for 2024!

This season will mark Deckerhoff’s 36th year as radio play-by-play man of the Bucs. He will be joined by his long-time partner in the booth, analyst and former Bucs tight end Dave Moore, heard on the Buccaneers Radio Network.

Also announced by the Bucs, WFLA-TV Channel 8 will continue to be the preseason TV home of the Bucs. Same booth, too, Chris Myers will call the play-by-play and Pro Football Hall of Fame cornerback/safety Rondé Barber will be alongside Myers as the game analyst.

There will be no changes overall in the radio broadcasts or preseason TV broadcasts. Same homes, same voices.

Joe doesn’t understand how weird it will be someday to hear a Bucs radio broadcast and not hear Deckerhoff. Joe’s happy he’s back.

Fire the cannons!

Gene is up there with Dickie V & Chick Hearn in my opinion

  3. Knothead71 Says:

OUTSTANDING! I’ve always enjoyed listening to football and baseball games on the radio more than watching them on tv. Not many things make me more happy than hearing Mr. Deckerhoff yell “fire them cannons!”
I’m really going to miss Mr. Deckerhoff when he retires.
Also it’s very cool to read Pro Football Hall of Fame cornerback/safety, Ronde’ Barber.

  6. KABucs Says:

His voice is all over every huge Bucs play.
    Love that guy!

  7. PSL Bob Says:

I greatly respect the man and his accomplishments, but it’s time to retire. If you had to listen to Bucs games on the radio as often as I do, you would understand. He just can’t keep up with the plays, get’s player names wrong, and without the help of his sidekick, Dave Moore, you’d never know what’s going on until the play is well over. Love his iconic voice, but it’s time to pass the torch.

  8. Fred McNeil Says:

Yanno, I can’t remember anybody else who ever did play by play. I looked it up. He’s been on the job since 1989. No wonder I don’t remember his predecessor. I’ve listened to blacked out BUCS games on the radio since 1982, but Gene is on his 35th year.

  9. Cobraboy Says:

    Fire them Cannons!

  10. Fred McNeil Says:

PSL, as far as I’m concerned he can stay forever.

  11. Pelsbuc61 Says:

    Fire the cannons! Great news.

  12. Buc4evr Says:

Great news. He is 79? So maybe he will go a few more years as the Bucs voice.

  13. Brian in St Pete Says:

As someone who has listened to the radio while watching the TV (especially since home games used to be blacked out) since Gene arrived, I am thrilled. It’s going to be a sad day when this legend rides into the sunset.

  14. Crickett Baker Says:

PSL, as a long-time radio listener, I know exactly what you mean. But he is still loveable and corrects his numerous mistakes (or Dave does) pretty quickly. 🙂

  15. BUCS TRUCKIN Says:

Gene should definitely be in the ring of honor Now.

Awesome news. People in Tallahassee and others who listen to the Noles sports radio network already miss him. Glad he is back for another season.

  19. Crotchety McGee Says:

Packers ball at their own forty and are gonna punt this one away. Jacquez Green deep to receive with his toes on let’s call it the 15 yard-line. There’s the snap and kick is away… hiiiiii spiraling punt. Quez steps back and fields it at the 13, makes a tackler miss, he’s to the 20, cuts upfield to the 25-30….35-40…. He’s got a wall of blockers!! Across midfield! He’s to the 45-40… 35-30… 25-20… he could go all the way!!!! 10-5-3-2-1….. TOUCHDOWN TAMPA BAYYYY!!! Fire them cannons!! Jacquez Green takes it to the house. An 87 yard punt return and the Bucs are on the board!…. Hold everything. There’s a market down. Are you kidding me Mr Refereee?? This is comin’all the way back. Holding on the Bucs and it will be 1st and 10 way back inside our own 10 yard-line.

  20. Crotchety McGee Says:

Absolute legend, Gene!!! Welcome back again, my friend

  21. SenileSenior Says:

  26. Dave Pear Says:

    Gene is a great American.

  27. Proudbucsfan Says:

I don’t care what anyone says even if Gene Deckerhoff is still with us at 105yo and he has to get corrected after every play he should be aloud to stay with the Bucs until he says it’s time to go. IMO he is the greatest voice in all of sports radio ever.

  28. longtimebucsfan Says:

Awesome. Love to have such a great Gator back doing Buc radio

  29. ModHairKen Says:

    ROH Mean Gene

  32. Bucs33Saints14! Says:

There is a certain excitement when listening to the Bucs on the radio because you don’t really know the outcome of the play until Dave Moore confirms if it was a caught ball, dropped ball or interception by the bad guys.

  33. adam from ny Says:

as the younger generation might say:

    “gene is a vibe”

  34. dls5492 Says:

When Gene says “toe meets leather” all seems right in Buc land.

    “Touchdown Tampa Bay!”….”Fire The Cannons!”

    Go Bucs!

  38. Razor Ramone Says:

Mark Champion and Jesse ( The Body)Ventura. Sidenote, I wonder why Ronde isn’t on national TV anymore? He was always prepared and did a solid job I thought.

  39. D-Rok Says:

Gene has such a unique and iconic voice. I can just hear a quick snippet of his voice on the radio and know exactly who it is.

    Glad he’s back! Go Bucs ! ! !

  40. BigBucsFan Says:

Love you Gene, thanks for sticking around. Truly won’t be the same without you. The little fun fact about me, I will watch the games on TV but the TV is on mute while the radio is turned up listening to Gene call the plays usually while on the grill. Appreciate the energy the passion and a camaraderie of being a fan.

  41. Half_Sac Says:

I’m sorry but he needs to retire. He’s a legend but now he’s too old. He can’t see what’s happening a lot of the time and constantly stumbles his sentences and slurs his words. It’s hard to listen too now. AAALLLSSSTTTOOOTTT up the gut!!!

  42. itzok Says:

    Chris Myers is the worst.

  43. FairMinded Says:

Gene we love you man. Legendary voice and play by play. Agree with others about Ring of Honor if he isn’t already in

  44. Rod Munch Says:

    Awesome!

I wish someone, somewhere, would post full games from his first year with Jesse Ventura. As a kid, I loved that stuff – you had the guy from the WWF and movies with Mean Jean calling the Bucs games. I have no idea if it holds up or not, but it would be fun to hear.
