CBS: Bucs Are “Firmly In Quarterback Purgatory”

June 3rd, 2024

Counted out by rightsholder.

Joe is trying to figure out what Baker Mayfield did to hack off #NFLMedia.

Despite Mayfield leading the Bucs to the divisional round last year, having the Bucs tied with the mightly Lions in the fourth quarter on the road with virtually no run game, folks who type about the NFL for a living simply cannot bring themselves to give the Bucs quarterback his just due.

In fact, many of the same outlets who think the Bucs are a garbage team point to Mayfield as to why. Is that because they made up their minds about the guy when he was in an awful no-support organization like Carolina?

Add Douglas Clawson to the list of Mayfield non-believers. Because of Mayfield, Clawson is convinced the Bucs will stink unless or until they find a true quarterback the team can lean on. You know, someone like Quinn Ewers who Clawson’s colleague at CBS, Ryan Wilson, suggested the Bucs select when they pick at No. 12 next spring.

In short, Clawson believes last season is the Bucs’ high water mark until they get a franchise quarterback.

Baker Mayfield signed a three-year deal worth $100 million to stay in Tampa Bay after leading the Bucs to a playoff win last year. Given Mayfield’s up-and-down career, his mostly average season in 2023 before breakout performances down the stretch and in the postseason, I’d say the Buccaneers are firmly in QB purgatory.

The way out? Well, Tom Brady isn’t coming out of retirement and neither is the 2002 Buccaneers defense, so I think this Tampa Bay team has probably hit its ceiling. For what it’s worth, Ryan Wilson has them drafting Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers in his way-too-early 2025 mock draft.

Well, Joe certainly isn’t throwing in the towel on Mayfield or the Bucs this fall.

Is it possible Mayfield regresses from his career year last season? Sure, but that doesn’t mean he’s going to suck. Just that he may not toss 28 touchdowns and instead throw 26. Or, he may not throw for 4,000 yards but 3,900 instead.

The Baker Hate in the Fourth Estate is very real, folks.

    What’s Funnier? …

The media LOVES, LOVES, LOVES Atlanta because they signed Cousins. Cousins is 1-4 in the playoffs and has ONE Divisional title.

  2. BillyBucco Says:

Queue the motorcycles and the Chips theme.
    Is that too dated?

  3. Lt. Dan Says:

Baker’s crime is being a Buc. The usual lack of respect from the football Gods. Whatever…winning is the best medicine.

  4. Jp09 Says:

I get Baker is our Qb and you want to defend him but until Baker proves consistency the take is warranted. All Baker and the Bucs have to do is win games and the narrative will change. They have a great opportunity this year with the schedule, if you want to be considered elite you have to beat the elite.

  5. BucsfaninOregon Says:

    I’ll take Mayfield over Cousins.

  6. Dude Says:

“The Baker Hate in the Fourth Estate is very real, folks.”

If that’s what you wanna call it, but how’s about looking at ALL the data?

Can’t have 5 games where you don’t pass for > 200 yards, people might think you stink.

Can’t have 6 games where you struggle to score >18 points either, or people might think you stink.

Can’t throw INTs in 10 of 17 games, you’re not Josh Allen in terms of mobility and arm talent-so tighten up or else, people might think you stink.

No too far from regression tbh, especially considering the fact as far as QB play goes at the NFL level Mayfield is the model of consistently inconsistent play and only he can change that

  7. Biff Barker Says:

The media dutifully sticks to the BS story.

  8. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Give Mayfield a stronger interior oline….a 3rd WR…..another RB…..better OC

And let’s see what he can do.

  9. Show Me the TDs Says:

The “Dude” abides. I don’t think Baker stinks, but he is mediocre, as evidenced by the data. I still think the Bucs will win 10 game this year, because we are a better all-around team.

  10. Joe Says:

Queue the motorcycles and the Chips theme.
    Is that too dated?

Just remember the blonde dispatcher (?) who worked back at HQ. 🙂

  11. 1sparkybuc Says:

Three FGs against Carolina is not impressive.

Plant HS could have beat the Fleagles in the playoffs.

Another season will determine what we have in Mayfield.

  12. realistic-optimistic Says:

It must be a very difficult offseason for you, Joe. Everybody keeps picking on your favorite QB.

Only HE can change the narrative, but pedestrian seasons like the last one are not going to do it.

  13. Joe Says:

Only HE can change the narrative, but pedestrian seasons like the last one are not going to do it.

Joe has stated several times already that Mayfield is going to have to lead the Bucs to deep playoff runs the next two seasons and until that happens, he’s always going to be considered as the next Rick Mirer. Maybe Mayfield will never be able to change it no matter how well he plays.

Sad thing is, this predictable narrative also drags down the team.

  14. BakerFan Says:

bunch of these azzwads are still butthurt when Oklahoma spanked Ohio State in the bighouse and he planted an OU flag bullseye in the O

  15. Fan of the South Says:

Folks like to throw Brad Johnson’s name around here. As far as talent goes Mayfield is certainly that caliber and had he been plugged into that S.B team he may have had the same success. One good season snd one Pro in 7 seasons for both before arriving in Tampa and Bucs won the S.B in his second season. Pretty similar. Can history repeat itself?
As far as history goes both Cousins and Johnson played with the Vikings and Redskins before ending up at their third team where they made/ or possibly make a playoff run.
Johnson made two Pro Bowls in his career to Cousins current 4 so there are some that think Kirk is a pretty good QB.
Regardless of who gets the Divison it would be nice to see the winner of the NFCS enter the playoffs with a better record than the #8 seed.

  16. realistic-optimistic Says:

Sad thing is, this predictable narrative also drags down the team.

Joe, can you elaborate? In what way does the perception of Mayfield as a middling QB bring the team down? Are players giving less effort?

If you’re just talking about the lack of national respect for our Bucs, I don’t see that as an actual problem. Who cares? It’s just predictions.

  17. Towered Says:

Getting Baker on what is now a mid-tier QB contract is way better than what the Falcons got with Cousins. They are both mid-tier QBs at the moment. Cousins is on a downward trajectory, Mayfield might still have upside.

Russell Wilson, of course, represented the best value for a mid tier QB this off-season, and the Steelers front office will receive the accolades for signing him.

I think the national media does the Bucs a huge favor every year by underestimating them; The front office talent doesn’t get poached, creating a culture that lends to consistent success.

  18. Buc4evr Says:

Clawson , who the heck is that bum and who cares. Football is a team sport and teams have won the SB with an average QB. Besides, it’s all about the big guys in the trenches for the Bucs this season, not the QB.

Btw, the Falcons could be in trouble for tampering when they were signing Cousins. Could lose a first round draft pick next season. lol.

  19. Bob Says:

Sports Press: Mayfield is a bad quarterback.

The do not like to be wrong.

  20. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

He might be right. He certainly is about Mayfield. The Nan was a total Rollercoaster last year. Before our upgrades the the OL, I considered him a gamble with an upside.

With the new OL, it improved his chances of success.

    Still a gamble though.

I figure it will take time for the OL to truly gel this year. I think it will start strong for a couple games, then enter a rough time. How long that lasts is unpredictable, but eventually it should stabilize.

Baker will have ti survive until then.

  21. Bob Says:

Sports Press: Mayfield is a bad quarterback.

They do not like to be wrong.

  22. e cummings Says:

I’m traveling right now but as I posted a couple days ago Mayfield’s 2023 stats convincingly show that he boosted his stats in quarter 4 compared to quarters 1 through 3. The media knows that and isn’t selling tickets.

  23. Buddha Says:

Buffalo has an all-world quarterback, what have they won?
San Diego has a consensus franchise QB and never even make the playoffs.
Dallas has a franchise QB and has never reached the NFC championship game.
    Baltimore fails repeatedly! No Superbowls!
Rodgers, one Superbowl in 14 years.
Etc. etc. Pro football is the ultimate team sport!

  24. Buccos Says:

I believe Mayfield will have a better season this year. We are playing for Championships again. Division titles are small potatoes

  25. JimBobBuc Says:

Just win baby. Beat up the division and some top opponents and win a couple playoff games.

Sure Baker was inconsistent last year. He and the entire offense must have done nothing during the bye and came back looking lethargic for a few games. I put that on Canales. Baker was hurt for a couple of games late in the regular season and it impacted his play. He came back in the playoff games.

Clawson says things like “up-and-down career, his mostly average season” and he sounds like another idiotic stat head than doesn’t recognize the impact of OL play, a run game, play calling, and year-to-year system consistency make on QB play. I’m not saying Baker is a great QB, I’m just saying past years with different teams doesn’t say much about this season.

  26. PowerOfPewter Says:

It sounds like the talking heads are embarrassed to admit that Cleveland went into QB purgatory after Mayfield was let go. Mayfield won a road playoff game against Pittsburg before his injury year…what has Cleveland done since? Bucs and Bucs fans are happy we got Mayfield… why tf should we give af what national idiots say? Let them choke on their words.

  27. BigBoiBuc Says:

@BakerFan – “ the big house” . Really? Football much? That’s not exactly where Ohio State plays their home games.

  28. vadertime Says:

Action speaks louder than words. In the first half of 2023, I was in the anti-Baker camp and wrote that he was not the future of the enterprise. I was wrong. Things came together in the 2nd half of the season and except for a couple of games Baker played well enough to get us a divisional title, albeit in a suck NFC South conference. Well, this year he will have a measuring stick in Kirk Cousins. Let’s see how Baker measures up. Go Bucs.

  29. Timbucs2 Says:

Ridiculous. The reason our season ended wasn’t Baker; it was a defense that gave up two 4th quarter touchdowns instead of field goals or stops. Just like they imploded down the stretch vs. the Texans, another playoff team.

Goes to show that some “analysts” don’t actually watch the games. They just go off past perceptions.

  30. Bucblind Says:

Planting the flag, they will never get over that. But I’m betting Baker doesn’t give a rip about any talk, other than it motivates him to go even deeper into the playoffs next year. He’s already taken a predicted 4 win season team 2 deep. And the two games after that, the conference championship and superbowl, were decided by a total of 7 whole points. So he doesn’t have that far to go to winning a superbowl. Oh but he threw an interception they say!!!! There is absolutely no hope for them. They want to nit pick all his mistakes during the season and ignore that he took them that close all when they were thinking it was going to be another terrible 4 win year. Not to mention his passer rating during the playoffs ranks 4th among all active qbs and is the record for all Bucs qbs. Even better than Tom Brady, b-b-b but he threw an interception!?!? Definitely the flag. Lol

  31. Kgh4life Says:

It’s evident that Baker is not an elite QB, however, he is solid with periods of greatness, such as the Green Bay game. If quality talent is around Baker he can go deep in the playoffs.

  32. BucsFan Says:

It is also completely logical to believe that Bucs run game will vastly improve with the addition of Barton, and Mayfield will also improve due to more favorable down and distance situations on 2nd and 3rd down. Most QB’s do not have their best seasons until years 5-9 and Baker is squarely in that range. Bucs will surprise most when they win the division again , but not me.

  33. Bucblind Says:

Buc4evr, you are right, teams have won plenty of superbowls with average qbs. In fact, the average qb play in superbowls over the last 10 years has been 85. Bakers 106.3 is plenty good enough. So they just need to build a winning team around the 106.3 qb and the magic will happen. All your nit picking is just meaningless gibberish. Build the team.

  34. JustVisiting Says:

Baker had a very good year in 2023, but it wasn’t a statistical outlier and I see no reason to think he’ll regress. With an improved OL a less predictable running game, more experience with his teammates, and greater maturity, I expect that he’ll improve on last year’s performance.

  35. Buc1987 Says:

    He doesn’t suck.

  36. Not My NFL! Says:

Buddah Says comment is spot on and just makes the others sound like jibberish.

  37. Alanbucsfan Says:

Mayfield has “breakout performances down the stretch and in the postseason” and Bucs are in “QB purgatory” – makes no sense.
Josh Allen, who is supposed to be a top 5 NFL QB, is 0-3 last 3 years in Divisional Playoffs. Are Bills drafting a QB next year in 1st round?
Mayfield was a gamble that paid off and he’s already shown he is a quality performer when he has talent around him.

  38. Buchen61 Says:

“I’m traveling right now but as I posted a couple days ago Mayfield’s 2023 stats convincingly show that he boosted his stats in quarter 4 compared to quarters 1 through 3. The media knows that and isn’t selling tickets”

It’s just projections but it’s almost criminal how the media twists and distorts every story…I have zero trust with anything they are saying.

  39. Dldub87 Says:

Any objective mind can go through Bakers NFL career year by year and can see obvious, legitimate reasons for his inconsistencies which are mostly circumstances beyond his control. Cleveland and Carolina are complete disasters , always have been always will be. Injuries, and the fact that he has had one more OC than the number of years he’s been in the League. No running game and a mediocre oline at best for most his career etc… Baker may not turn out to be what myself and many others think he can be but to judge him by his years previous to joining the Bucs is simply ridiculous. It’s amazing how some reporters like this moron keeps his job. Go Baker Go Bucs!!

Who cares what CBS thinks? Plays are made on the field. They were all wrong last year. I know predicted 11-6. After they tanked, I predicted a cleaned house. So I was wrong, too. That’s why nobody’s quoting me. CBS is even less reliable.

  43. heyjude Says:

In his career, Baker has played six seasons and four different teams including the Bucs. Different coaches, different owners… And yet he perseveres. Last season Baker was Pro Bowl Offensive MVP. Some QBs haven’t won a playoff game or a Super Bowl. Some have never been selected to the Pro Bowl. It sounds like some CBS sport writers have way too much time on their hands to already state who we will be choosing in the next draft.

Sort of fishy that they didn’t name the Falcons/Cousins and Jets/Rodgers on their list. Hmm… Maybe it is time to place CBS in purgatory with no absolution.

  44. ^^mtn^^ Says:

Bake will be fine, especially if they find a run game his season.

If they do, his numbers will probably be down; no biggy.

    Competent back up in Trask.

    No QB purgatory for Bucs.

Bake’s contract is essentially a 2 year deal with 3rd year team option.

    Minimal risk.

If all goes well, they should win 10-12 this season and at least 1 round further in playoffs.

Uh, the Bucs made the playoffs and won a playoff game. Kinda sounds like you’re the clueless one, with all the hate. I hope the Bucs prove you wrong again this year, Boss…People say you’re a closet Saints fan. True or false?

  46. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

CBS Sports is in intellectual purgatory.

  47. Bowles4President Says:

I find the stab at the Bucs defense to be almost equally insulting. No one thought the 2000 Bucs defense could walk in the same room as the 2002 defense… until they did. Why should I right off the 2024 D from greatness?

For every defensive concern one has about the 2024 Bucs, its also likely we have some unexpected strengths that pop up as well.

Yaw take our D for granted

  48. Mike Johnson Says:

Baker was able to grind it out with his injuries last season. The way he plays he will get hurt as some point during the season. Like I’ve always said, Trask will get his shot. He better be ready. I think it comes this year.

  49. Bee Says:

Baker fans are in shambles trying to ignore the last series of last season. Baker threw a pick on 2nd and 5 in Bucs territory. That was his chance to change the narrative. Fans need to stop expecting the defense to hold good teams to 10 pts. The offense had trouble consistently scoring all last season and Baker was a part of that.

Baker is far from terrible but he needs to play better this year. Baker is a stop-gap QB otherwise his contract would’ve been for longer. 🤷🏾‍♂️

  50. Bucblind Says:

Build a team around the 106.3 qb. Easily good enough for a superbowl win. It’s not that complicated Boss. Well, maybe it is for you.

  51. drdneast Says:

If the Bucs don’t make it to the playoffs it’s not going to be because of Mayfield, it will be from our pass defense not generating enough heat on the opposing team, specifically from the OLB position.

  52. Cobraboy Says:

“Quarterback purgatory” regarding Mayfield is the most ignorant statement I have ever heard. This mook never saw Mayfield play.

This team was a couple of decent OLs away from a shot at the Big Dance.

I would not compare Mayfield to some of the top-tier quarterbacks, but for the money, he came in and played well above my expectations. He showed great grit, command, and leadership…without a credible ground game.

    What a bunch of maroons!

  53. Beeej Says:

Brady’s last play ever with the Patriots was a pick 6.

You do realize the Lions scored 31 points in that game, right?

  55. Bee Says:

He won another ring after that! Lol

  56. Dude Says:

“If the Bucs don’t make it to the playoffs it’s not going to be because of Mayfield, it will be from our pass defense not generating enough heat on the opposing team, specifically from the OLB position.”

Offense ranked 18th league wide in scoring with a 21.2 ppg game average and our defense helped this figure by recording safties and a TD. Offense scored more than that average 8 of 17 contest

Defense ranked 5th in points allowed with an impressive 19.2 ppg and our defense held opposing offenses under that avg in 9 of 17 contests

Blind optimism for the offense with a new OC, but our defense, THE BETTER UNIT ON THE TEAM gets shat on for finishing 18th in QB takedowns, but also being 8th best in the league generating sacks on a per game basis.

Mayfield and our offense got shut out in the last game of the season, but our defense rose to the challenge and shut the panthers out and kept them out of FG range, but our D was playing a rookie QB

  57. Bee Says:

    @Joe In Michigan

Yes I do. And we had better receivers IMO with Mike and Chris and couldn’t score any points. I only Hold Baker accountable for what he controls and that’s where and when he throws the ball. Against the very good teams he couldn’t help his team score points. It’s that’s simple. It’s not all his fault but him playing above average won’t get it done.

If he was really that good he could’ve at leat got the team to midfield and not throwing a pick on 2nd down. Lol

  61. Boss Says:

    @ joe in MI

not a saints fan AT all. Probably the one team I truly despise as they are the only rival that is dirty and owns us quite a bit. The ONLY NFL games I watch are the bucs and playoffs.

  62. teacherman1983 Says:

Playing QB is like leading a cavalry.

It’s one of the hardest jobs on planet earth.

99.9% of the clowns on this site would survive 1 hit in the NFL.

Y’all would break if you took 1 sack.

Baker Mayfield is a warrior QB. Hits don’t faze him like other QBs.

You can’t make Baker scared. He’s insane. He’s a badass.

The Bucs need a Pirate QB. Baker is perfect for us.

He could win a super bowl. I’m sure. He has the heart to play in front of the world. And win. No stage is too big for him.

And he ain’t scared of getting hit.

  63. Joe in Michigan Says:

Bee: The Bucs scored 24 that game. Not too shabby. I try not to get too triggered by one play, I was disappointed that Mayfield threw a pick there, the second of the game for him, but be was far from terrible in that game, IMHO.

  64. Brandon Jeff Says:

The Baker defenders are out in force. What’s really interesting is they sound just like the Trask defenders. Coming up with reasonable explanations for why their quarterback is not more highly regarded. The Baker Boi’s will circle the wagons against negative media criticism yet will spew hate towards one of their own in Trask who was in no way responsible for the Bucs sucking half the year.

  65. MCWAY Says:

@1sparkybuc: Playoff teams often have ugly wins, during their stretch. I’m sure you remember the Dungy years of 13-10, 6-3, 12-9, 15-0 type wins (which bled into Gruden’s regime and that 2002 Super Bowl team). Thankfully, this ain’t college; ugly wins count, too😁

  66. Joe in Michigan Says:

Boss: Good to know. Sometimes it seems as if you hate the Bucs.

  67. Bucblind Says:

That’s how ignorant munch is, Baker got a predicted 4 win season team to the second round of the playoffs and tied with the lions in the 4th quarter. Lions went on to loose by 4 whole points to the niners and the niners lost by 3 whole points in the superbowl. 7 whole points total. With just a few plays being different Tampa could have been in the mix with a qb that plays lights out football in the playoffs, 106.3. Build a team around Baker and the Bucs will win a superbowl no matter what munch yaps about.

  68. Defense Rules Says:

Mission accomplished Joe; you riled up the masses. Impressive because that’s not easy to do in early June.

JL & TB obviously are working towards beefing up the TEAM surrounding Baker to give him (and us) the best chance of making the playoffs once again. IF we succeed in improving several obvious areas THEN Baker will be fine. If not, then the whole team (not just Baker) will struggle.

  69. Bee Says:

    @Joe In Michigan

I agree he wasn’t terrible that game. We just needed more from him. There’s gonna bad games where he needs to put the team on his back. In the playoffs. I hope he can get it done.

  70. ModHairKen Says:

Boss and Fake Joe do hate the Bucs. It’s documented every post. And anyone who comments in the third person (and does not run the site) is a moron.

Look at the 47 years of this franchise and tell me any QBs who had a winning record his first year here and won a playoff game. Brady. Baker. Brad Johnson (?).

Some of you are entitled little crypusses. There are 32 teams in this league.

And after what the Glazers have done for this community, anyone who calls them cheap is an ungrateful POS.

  71. Mark Reese Says:

I’d be very happy if Mayfield threw for 3500 yds and 26 TD

  72. Buchen61 Says:

    MadHairKen I applaud you sir

  73. Boss Says:

I dom’t put the detroit game on bake as much as I do todd’s gameplan and mike dropping the ball early which changed the entire tempo of the game. regardless of score they owned us.

  74. Lakeland Steve Says:

It’s all just Baker fuel. The more they hate on Baker the more he is going to feel like he has something to prove. So, hate on.

  75. Gipper Says:

Nonsense. Quinn Ewers couldn’t even start for Ohio State and slunked out to Texas. There aren’t many in the NFL who have a power arm like Mayfield. Fewer still have the leadership intangibles. Mayfield is going to have a much better Year 2 with the Bucs with a better play caller and an improved O line. Expect 35 TD’s and 12 INT. 10 W’s and finishes in the top 6 of all NFL QB’s. Don’t care what the same writers say this year. Most were universally wrong last year about the Bucs and Mayfield. Being a journalist isn’t quite as difficult as being an NFL QB.

  76. Bamboo Says:

Would “They” say that if Baker was on Denver, Indy, Raiders,.etc..NOPE

  77. Oneilbuc Says:

I can’t believe what I’m hearing about Baker Mayfield some of y’all are dulousnal when talking about Baker Mayfield. Again Baker is a game manger at best and no one believes he’s a Superbowl quarterback but his fans . He haven’t show nothing that you can get to a Superbowl with him as your quarterback. The bucs must draft a quarterback next year in the first round if Baker plays like he did last year. How many games did Baker actually played good the whole game? . You got the Texans I will give him that even though he only had 11 yards passing in the third quarter. You got the Jaguars, Packers, Vikings he was very average but that’s a good for Baker. And the last game against the Falcons and the first game against the saints he played ok not great. So that’s about 5 or 6 games during the regular season out of 17 games that’s a backup quarterback. Now I know his fan base will say name the games when he plays bad for the first 3 quarters in a game and late in the 4th quarter with 3 minutes left he pad his stats and and he make his stats look like he played good the whole game but I don’t count that as a good game.

  78. Oneilbuc Says:

Mod. Shawn King went to the NFC championship his first year!!

  79. Oneilbuc Says:

Gipper. Joe Borow couldn’t start at Ohio State either and I think he’s doing pretty good right now. He played in a Superbowl so that don’t mean anything because we all know how Kyle Trask played at UF and he had the best numbers in college football in 2020 . He the most passing yards and touchdowns and yards per throw. Then came in last year and put played Baker Mayfield in training camp. And you guys know it that’s why no one but Baker Mayfield fan base can actually said Baker was better than Kyle Trask. Haven’t no one confirmed that yet but the people who wasn’t there like his fan boys lol 🤣🤣

One thing that national pundits do not think about is that Baker has found a home. Once he settles in I predict he will become more consistently his better self. The Bucs now have a good QB. We can continue to win. When has the franchise been in this situation?

    Go Bucs!!!

  81. Gipper Says:

    Oneilbuc and others,
You guys know more about Mayfield than GM Licht who saw enough last year to want Baker back for three years. It is laughable the stupid things that you so called “fans” say about Mayfield. John Dorsey picked both MaHomes and Mayfield a couple of years apart. There are few talent evaluators in the NFL who are as good. In fact, more recently Dorsey has been behind the scenes in helping select Detroit Lions talent. Going to have fun in 2024 reminding you Muncher maniacs about your Mayfield negativity. Glad that Mike Evans and Chris Godwin don’t agree with any of you re Mayfield.

  82. Cobraboy Says:

    Oneillbuc says

He haven’t show nothing that you can get to a Superbowl with him as your quarterback.

You realize, no doubt, being the sharpest football mind this forum has ever been exposed to, that the standard you proffer would apply to all but maybe 3-5 NFL QB’s, since they, too have not been to a SB.

This includes St. America’s Turnover Machine, He, the Eater of W’s…

  83. PiratesLife Says:

    Arrrrg!!

  84. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

Oneil – Baker had a perfect passer rating against the Packers, the only QB to ever do that in GB. I’d call that better than “very average “ that you just stated. You are officially considered non-credible.

  85. Oneilbuc Says:

It’s one thing about it we are going to see this year and don’t tell me nothing about GM’s in the NFL. A lot of them play the politics game just like in any other profession. I have never seen a quarterback that’s drafted number one overall get this many times to fail. A number one overall pick that’s on his 4th team in his first 6 years of his career. And you guys call everything hate when someone don’t put on rose color glasses. It’s ok to be a bucs fan and you don’t have to just talk about the good of the team you can also talk about the flaws with the and the players. The only thing you guys do is make up a bunch of excuses for Baker Mayfield and you guys are going to do the same thing this year. It’s NFC championship or bust no excuses!!

  86. Cobraboy Says:

Y’all can pi$$ & moan all you want, but Mayfield is the Bucs QB, Licht, Bowles and the ownership believes in him, the team loves him, and he won a playoff game with a s#!t running game. WTF do you want that was available?

No, he ain’t Mahomes, Rodgers, Brady, or any of the swag QB’s that make casual panties drop.

    So freakin’ what? Boo Hoo.

IMO, he represents Tampa Bay well: gritty, not the biggest, fanciest, or best, blue collar, been kicked around a little and disrespected, and with a chip on his shoulder as big as Egmont Key.

I’d rather have Mayfield than even that arrogant jerk who burned $750k because he didn’t want to join his teammates in the dog days of OTA’s, and I don’t care what the difference in physical talent is.

Football is a tough, physical game, and so is Mayfield. AND I doubt you’ll see him making it rain or blasting a Lambo at 120 while blowing a .2.

Is he the best? No. Were the Bucs in a position to sign “the best” last season or this off-season? Hell, no. But he earned my respect with his play, his leadership, and toughness. I saw a team who’d die for him. It’s a team sport, and unless you’re a casual fan, those things matter. A lot.

  87. Cobraboy Says:

@Oneill: like YOU make excuses for ATM?
    ……………………….
On another topic, Licht >>>>> Oneillbics on the credibility meter.

  88. Oneilbuc Says:

Corbraboy . To keep bringing up Jamies to me ain’t going to change the fact that Baker is not a elite quarterback. You guys bring up Jamies because you really hate that man for real. And Jamies keep making millions while y’all keep bringing his name up . The fact of the matter is all y’all do is cry about the running game when Baker Mayfield plays bad . He had 6 good games out 17 that’s not good at all. Again the bucs will have Baker throwing the ball more than he should and all you have to do is look the runningbacks they got on the team. And Baker also has a lot of turnovers on I forgot that’s not his fault. This is why no meadi respects this team or fan base.

  89. Oneilbuc Says:

The media don’t respect this team or fan base

  90. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

Oneill – We bring up Jameis because YOU defended him and made excuses for his poor play. See the irony? We all wanted Jameis to succeed, just like we do for Baker. Why are you hating on Baker? He earned my respect. I’m not sure he’ll ever be elite – but he’s our guy, a great leader, and tough as hell. I choose to envision the best until shown otherwise. You do not seem to have that same view.

  91. Oneilbuc Says:

74 . The excuses I made for Jamies were legitment now was some of that Jamies fault yes it was. But to see how many of the people on here talk like Baker Mayfield is a elite quarterback. Maybe not you but they do go overboard with Baker Mayfield. I respect Baker Mayfield as well and I don’t think no real bucs fan want to see him fail because I don’t. I’ve said on here that Baker did earn another shot but at the same time he has to play better than last year to me . But the whole leadership thing really ain’t nothing but a bunch of talk to me. And these players are motivated by money in the NFL !! So that’s why I’m raising the expectation to NFC championship or bust and that’s not just for Baker Mayfield that’s also to the whole team including the coaches!!

  92. Let ‘em bake Says:

Mayfield will be in the mvp discussion. Of the 4k I won in the Bucs winning the south last year, I will take some if that and place it on number 6… in addition to the Bucs repeating in the south. Lock it.

  93. Drunkinybor Says:

Baker is a good q.b. I think he’s got a rare talent where he xan win a game for you when your team is down. I was actually surprised he was as good as he was. I saw precision throws, nice touch on the deep ball, great anticipation, great ball placement, sky’s the limit. I really believe that. I thought he was much better than what I saw in Cle.He looked like he had to do everything and enjoyed it. I wanted to see him combine just running the offense and making those crazy plays when he had to. I thought he did a fantastic job and he will get better I’m sure of it.

  94. Dave Pear Says:

If all the village idiots in the world got together in a new village, and elected a new village idiot, Osqueely’all wouldn’t even get a vote because of abject cluelessness. They’d just hand him a broom and tell him to go to a corner and play with it.

Squashtard is the ultimate maroon. The more it types, the more it proves its ignorance.

  95. Bucblind Says:

Onei not a clue. There have been many superbowls won by qb with an 85 passer rating. Bakers 106.3 is far better. Explain how he can’t ever win a superbowl. Never mind, it is way over your head. There are large numbers involved.

  96. D Cone Says:

Can’t understand how people say if the Bucs lose it is not on Baker.
Although the defense had a weak pass rush and secondary they gave up the 7th fewest points in the league. Add to that the 8 additional possession the offense was handed after the D reclaimed the 18 turnovers by the offense with a positive turnover differential.
Bucs Offense was 20th in points scored with fewer than the Bears and Broncos. Their QB’s were run out of town.
When the player that touched the ball on just about every snap fails to execute the offense and put the ball in the end zone it is directly on him.

  97. Bucblind Says:

What superbowl do you THINK Joe Burrows played in onei not a clue??

  98. Bucblind Says:

2021 and he had a passer rating of 100.9. Now how can Bakers 106.3 not go to a superbowl?

  99. Dave Pear Says:

See, y’all don’t understand, Osqueeltard is one of them special savants, couldn’t count how many feet he has if you told him it was less than 3. But on quarterbacks – personnel folks in the NFL are lining up.

Loved JaMiss who has won in the playoffs. Whoops. Benched for a cripple.

Hated Brady, who won a Super Bowl for us and then was cheated out of another one by the Defensive Coordinator the following year.

Thinks Trashk is the answer now. Believes there is a conspiracy of biblical proportions by Jason, Todd and the Glazers to hurt the team the are paid to win with by suppressing his monstrous ability to stare down primary receivers and exhibit worse pocket presence than Mike Glennon. So smart on the quarterbacks.

Word from OBP is, they’ve contacted JBF because they are in dire need of such a QB savant.

    You go Osqueeltard! You go!

If you get the job, Jason will let you spoon with any dude you want.

  100. ben barga Says:

dude has been to the playoffs multiple years, would you rather have Watson?. Mayfield may never win a super bowl but how many qb’s in the league will in the next decade. 4?

  101. Bucswin! Says:

He will be better this season. No doubt. Go BUCS

  102. SenileSenior Says:

I realize Baker is not Brady or Mahomes. He is not elite. He is our QB. I love him because he has heart. He obviously loves football. He is a true leader. He is fun to watch. We can go far with him. That is good enough for me.

    Go Bucs!!!

  103. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

Well – if Baker doesn’t live up to or exceed expectations- we will be shopping for a new QB. The ball is in your hands Baker – let’s see what you’ve got.

  104. SenileSenior Says:

Our team has to become good enough in order to get to the Super Bowl.

  105. Oneilbuc Says:

Bucblind. Come on now Joe Burrow is way better than Baker Mayfield you see this what I be talking about. The way y’all talk about Baker Mayfield but I guess I’m different. I want superbowles the only way this will be a good season of the bucs get to the NFC championship. It’s no more excuses for Baker on offense they gave him a new offensive lineman and a new runningback he had to play better this year. 6 games out of 17 is not good !!

  106. Oneilbuc Says:

D Cone. Thank you bro I agree 💯 percent Baker Mayfield has to play better!!

  107. ^^mtn^^ Says:

Um…10? Unless a couple win multiples.

But frankly, if he can’t win a SB, there is no point in keeping him at all.

  109. Bucblind Says:

Onei clueless, do you not understand that Baker plays really good in the playoffs 106.3, and superbowls are during the playoffs and superbowls have been won by qbs that had passer ratings of 22.6, 78.1, 81.3 and so on. What part of that don’t you get? I’ve asked you twice now to explain your delusion on the subject. Are you going to illuminate us with your intellect or not? How does 106.3 not win a superbowl when you were just a game away last year and both the nfc championship and superbowl was settled with just a 7 point difference? You won’t explain it because you can’t.

  110. NCBuc Says:

Maybe I can help you out Bucblind….. So BM has a magic 106 in the playoffs. Ok great! What about his season? 94 ring a bell? His best was with Cleveland at 95. His career average is an 88. You do realize that the great BM is the key that knocked us out of the playoffs with an ugly INT? I’m not even saying BM sucks. He’s an average QB that needs a lot of stuff around him to excel. It’s posters like you that talk smack about the defense when the saved our tails in far too many games. The only reason we limped into the playoffs was because of the highest paid DB in the NFL. He a lone saved us at least 2 games, but count could be at 3. Again, I don’t hate BM, but claiming he is this absolute beast of a QB like some of you claim is absurd. It’s a team sport and if you actually paid attention, the defense helped the team a lot more than the offense did.

  111. NCBuc Says:

To literally answer your question….. It only takes one screwup to end the hope. BM did just that!

  112. Big Red Says:

    Lesser QB’s have won superbowls…

  113. Dave Pear Says:

Otardbuc with the gibberish. Otardbuc having the warms for young strong tall well built men, who know how to use a missile.

    An obvious pattern.

Kyle’s Trashk might spoon with Oneiltard for $50.

  114. Bucblind Says:

Oh boy what a selective memory you have NCBuc. There really is no point in debating with you because you like all the other haters are delusional. Point 1, you say the defense got you there, yes they definitely helped. But you as usual just casually leave out the reality that you were picked by everybody to win 4 games last year. And what changed after that prediction? Only one thing changed and that was BM joined the team and as usual elevated the team enough to go 2 deep into the playoffs and was tied with the Lions in the 4th quarter. 2, what does his career rating have to do with anything? He took you 2 deep and if the Bucs would have beat the Lions which could have easily happened they would have faced the niners. The Lions lost to them by 4 points. The Bucs would have been in the middle of that game with the possibility of winning also. If they would have won they would have gone to the big game where the niners lost by 1 field goal. With the play of BM at 106 they could have overcome that 3 point loss the niners suffered. The point is, at that level there isn’t that much that separates the teams that are still playing.3, wrong again I have never talked smack about the defense but I would expect you to make ridiculous statements like that because you constantly do it.4, wrong again he is far from average. When he was with the worst team in the league he took them from 4-44 to 11-5. Average qbs dont do that and they sure dont go into Lambeau Field and come out with a 158.3. Only one has done that in all the years football has been played there and it wasnt Tom Brady or Mahomes. That’s not average in anyone’s book but you haters. And what an dumb statement to say he needs a lot of stuff around him, like all qbs don’t need a team around them, try not to be so ridiculous. The team he had last year was closer than any of you haters want to admitt. You change a couple of plays and the Bucs could have been in the thick of it and that was Bakers first year with the team. All this will bounce off you haters like water off a rock because you have hidden agendas but those that are rational will agree BM is more than good enough to win a superbowl in Tampa. It doesn’t matter if he is elite, middling or sucks, he plays more than good enough when the big games are on the line-106.3 which by the way ranks 4th among ALL active qb, FAR from average but whatever right? As I said superbowls have been won with qbs who had a rating of 22.6 so I am quite sure a qb who plays 106.3 can win one too. But you haters will never admitt it. All you can say is b-b-b-but he threw an interception!!??!!?? Hate on, it will only make him play better and make you look dumber this fall. Prepare for it, because it will happen!!!

  115. heyjude Says:

Agree with so many. We would not want Watson as our QB. My God, I would not want Rodgers and some others either. Baker is a good guy, no drama, and is doing well for one season with us. The Browns got rid of him for Watson. Big error in judgement and many of their fans were not happy either. We got the good guy and I am so glad we did.

I don’t know about anyone else, but the night Jameis was drafted, I was jumping up and down in joy in my living-room. It was either he or Marcus. Both are still playing and both are 30 years old. Did anyone watch Jameis at FSU? Great player and he was our draft pick, and many of us were overjoyed. Unfortunately, the alleged off field problems did become an issue and the Bucs did the right thing. And we got Brady! Baker was the best pick after Brady. The Bucs did good.

  116. John Dixon Says:

    The “Dude” is a twit.

  117. Marky Mark Says:

They were so wrong last year this time they are hoping Baker fails so they can be right .

    “The “Dude” is a twit.”

    Now I’m a sad panda 🙁 lol

  119. Oneilbuc Says:

Bucblind. Bro you are talking about 1 game and he played good against the Eagles who lost 6 games in a row at the time. So they caught the eagles at the right time. But what happened against the Lions in the playoffs Baker did not play as good as you guys think he did. Go back and watch the game and take off your rose color glasses off and watch the game. I’ve went back and watched it and once the Lions had a good lead late in the 4th quarter they slack off and Baker did what he normally does pad his stats to make it look like he played good the whole game. And when it came down to the last drive he threw a pick on his second throw and no one was surprised that he did that. Some of y’all talk as if Baker is a elite quarterback and he’s far from being elite. Think about it bro last year was his best season in his career and he’s never played good 2 years in a row. Those are facts and watch what happens they will have Baker throwing more than what he should because they paid him . A good Baker Mayfield is having him throwing 25 to 30 times a game at most that’s the only way you can win with Baker. Garden Michew helped the Colts win 10 games last year. He didn’t play all 10 because Richardson went down in week 5 think . Plus Richardson got hurt every game last year and Michew had to come in . Baker Mayfield and Garden Michew are pretty much the same quarterback Baker might be a hair better than him but it ain’t by much. It’s NFC championship or bust no excuses!!!

  120. Oneilbuc Says:

Marky. I don’t think no body on this site hope Baker fails because if they do than their not bucs fans. And I don’t think no one wasting their time being a fan of the most losing franchise in NFL history. I think we are all bucs fans other than those Baker fans that’s only here because of Baker Mayfield and to me what they say don’t mean nothing at all just like the people that were here only because of Brady. I don’t respect anything what they say about the bucs because anyone can do that. I can say I’m a Patrick Mahomes fan and claim to be a Chiefs fan only because of the quarterback. That’s like when people say I’m of any team that Labron is on. That’s weak lazy to me !!

  121. realistic-optimistic Says:

But you as usual just casually leave out the reality that you were picked by everybody to win 4 games last year.

What difference does that make? Do predictions have tangible impact on the field? Who’s prediction? Yours? Mine? Joe’s?

A player’s performance isn’t better or worse because preseason pundits didn’t see it coming.

  122. Bucblind Says:

Yeah Onei that is EXACTlY what happened. The Lions let up with millions on the line, they just let up because that’s what humans do when a lot of money is on the line. I don’t understand why an NFL team isn’t paying you millions of dollars for your astonishing insight. I get it, Baker is padding his stats when he has a run late in the game because everybody let’s up when they are 7 points ahead and Baker can tell when they are letting up so he runs in and pads his stats. What an imagination. I guess when Brady came back late in a game he really was having a comeback but Baker is just padding his stats? Baker is so worried about his stats that he played half the season with a fractured shoulder. He really padded his stats when he threw the ball with his broken shoulder didnt he? Or was it playing half a season with a completely torn labrum that padded his stats? Which one was he padding his stats on, the broken shoulder or the torn labrum? Truly amazing insight.

  123. Oneilbuc Says:

Bucblind. Yep they really should pay me to do the job !!

  124. Oneilbuc Says:

Bucblind. You need to go look at the whole game bro Baker had 6 good games out of 17. I get it you one of the ones who say he played a good game after playing bad for 3 quarters and 11 minutes out of the game . But all he has to do is when the defense is in prevent and the game is pretty much over is throw for a few yards and maybe even score TD you will ignore the 3 quarters and 11 of bad football. And say he played good a overall I get it .

  125. Bucblind Says:

Yeah onei he played so terrible that’s why the nfl qb rating index has him at #14 and very very little from being in the top 8.

  126. Bucblind Says:

Actually he’s ranked #11 out of 66 nfl qbs. He really did have a terrible season onei. You are right again.

  127. Dave Pear Says:

Somebody should ask Oneiltard what it’s like to be the Village Idiot’s janitor. Ben Stiiler’s Simple Jack character in Tropiic Thunder had more relevant football comments than Oneiltard.

Don’t worry Oneiltard, someone will be over to cuddle with you soon.

  128. Mark Alstott Says:

The only thing that can change what the “preseason pundits” have to say is actions. Get out there and prove them wrong. Stats don’t tell the whole tale, but they do give you a decent insight on what you have. That said, Baker most likely does need a couple of deep playoff runs to silence the critics. I’m sort of in that boat, too. I did agree with the extension, especially has it appears to give the team an out after year two if Baker doesn’t play up to expectations. I agreed mostly because on the FA side, there were no clear cut better options for the team. Baker was the best available option out there, and he wanted to be here.

That said, I am still on the fence with Baker. He did great at times, and he did not so great at times. I don’t have the stats, but I’m curious how many yards baker had during “garbage time.” Did this inflate his overall stats? Was this a factor in the decision making process when extending him? I don’t know, but I do know that when comparing the careers of Baker and Jameis, the side by side comparison is very similar. Which gives me pause. Like i said above, give us a couple deep playoff runs. Until then, this is all just rhetoric, actions are what define us, show us something Baker.

  129. NCBuc Says:

Seen the funny Baker Bois comments and can just laugh. Let me repeat a statement. I don’t hate BM, I just don’t think he’s this gods gift of a QB some of you think he is. The biggest game of his career and he threw a pick. Is that not a fact? Please feel free to correct me, but it’s on tape. The fact that he was an average QB during the season is a fact. It’s on tape. No hiding it. He is definitely a colorful leader, I don’t knock that. But at the end of the day he is average. It’s on the tape. I’m willing to eat crow if he has another decent season. I’ve said that before as well. At the end of the day….. He lost us the Detroit game. It’s on tape and you can’t hide it. Again, I threw actual stats and none of you can even remotely rebuttal they. Just the usual Baker Bois name calling and excuses. Kinda funny that yet again I need to answer about being a Trask fan, when yet again I have to type that I didn’t even know who he was until we drafted him. Keep living safely behind your keyboards or phone.

With a smile haha biatch
