Practice Notes From OTA

Bucs at OTA practice today.
Underwear football was in full swing at a toasty Bucs practice Tuesday morning.
No, no Tristan Wirfs. Joe doesn’t blame Wirfs. He witnessed first-hand what happened to Ryan Jensen two years ago. And it’s not like Wirfs, who is at One Buc Palace regularly working out, needs an underwear football practice.
Just a reminder for folks, both new readers and old, underwear football is basically flag football. There is no hitting of any sort. Dudes are in shorts and practice jerseys. No pads.
The following are highlights. Practice was heavily screened from the fourth estate so not all players were seen.
* New day in Tampa Bay: Rachaad White takes a handoff from Baker Mayfield and runs left outside!
* Mayfield rolls left and hits Cade Otton down the left sideline.
* Mayfield takes a few steps to his right and connects short with Chris Godwin on the right side.
* Mayfield steps left and pitches (!) to Chase Edmonds as he runs left.
* Kyle Trask does a nice job of hauling in a very high snap and still is able to complete a pass to Bucky Irving over the middle.
* Maybe midway through practice, Cody Mauch walks off the practice field escorted by a trainer into One Buc Palace. Joe couldn’t tell if he was hurt or the heat got to him. WTVT-TV Channel 13 sports anchor Kevin O’Donnell thought he noticed Mauch limping. Joe didn’t see it, at least it wasn’t that noticeable.

* Coverage sack! Mayfield pumps left. Hops. Pumps right, nothing there, there rolls right. If this were 11-on-11 and hitting was allowed Mayfield may have been sacked.
* Mayfield hits Chase Edmonds in the right flat.
* Trask throws over the middle for Deven Thompkins who ran in from the left but the throw led Thompkins too much and perhaps a bit too high.
* Trask connects with Payne Durham down the right seam.
* Trask to Irving in the right flat.
* After a break, Trask walks over to a side field with running back Patrick Laird to get extra throwing in.
* Mayfield hits Godwin down the right seam.
* Irving zig-zags his way up the middle.
11-on-11
* Safety Rashad Wisdom (UTSA) picks off John Wolford.
* Couldn’t tell who Mayfield was throwing to as Joe was screened by a line of players but Mayfield’s pass was too long to the right.
* Mayfield rolls to his left and throws the ball away to the left side as YaYa Diaby was in hot pursuit.
* Trask fumbled a poor, low snap but was still able to get off a completion to rookie receiver Jalen McMillan in the left flat.

Trask definitely sounds like he was more mobile and agile after the practice. I mean his athletic ability on those bad snaps?? I think he obviously proved today that he is the starter.

I think they should not let Trask practice with the starters because this might be another training camp where Trask is out playing Baker again!! Lol 🤣🤣 I hope we win the superbowl this year and Baker has 38 TD and 5 picks. But if Trask is playing better than Baker again in training camp you can’t get mad because people are bringing it up. I don’t care who’s the quarterback this year because the bucs need to draft one next year anyway. Or less Baker plays like Jerry Golf at least than they don’t need to draft a quarterback. But if this another training camp and Trask is playing better then what do you expect for any real bucs fan to say ?? We want the best players on the field not the most popular player regardless of his mosie!!

Chad . The best players should play because if Baker plays bad than that will make people wonder if Trask was the starter than maybe we could be winning. Now I know Baker is a business decision not a football decisions and we all know Baker will start and I don’t think no real bucs fan hope Baker Mayfield fail but if Kyle Trask plays better than Baker Mayfield this training camp again it’s going to be division in the fan base and that’s the problem. And you can scream go root for another team all you want but the real bucs fans ain’t going anywhere we just want the best players to play. And if Baker plays good in training camp we will be happy for him. But we can’t keep ignoring facts bro!!

According to that little video clip they had Hainsey still in as starting center with Opeta in at LG with the group Mayfield was with.
Barton was center and Bredeson at LG with the group that was with Wolford at QB.
It means nothing right now, but still interesting.

If you think for one minute that any nfl coach wouldn’t play the best player that would improve their chances of winning games you have either lost your mind or you don’t understand the NFL where ALL coaches will do ANYTHING to win. It is ALL about winning and the money that follows the winning. Any other conclusion is just daydreaming on your part, period. Trask just isn’t as good as Baker, sorry.

Hey Boss I can’t tell if you are kidding about Trask being clocked at 21.6 mph? I hope you are because that is the biggest load of BS I have ever heard. He ran a 5.08 40. Furthermore, 21.6 mph is world class sprinting speed on the track. And you Baker haters expect people with brains to take that and not respond. 🤣🤣🤣

AGAIN…no matter how many times you trot out the canard about Trask actually outplaying Baker in the pre season and practices it will NEVER make it a fact!!!
It’s an OPINION obviously not shared by the Bucs braintrust. You use another OPINION expressed a couple of times here by one of the Joes, although I read that as shock at Trask’s dramatic improvement based on how much he SUCKED his first three years here.
I can play this game. TRASK DID NOT OUTPLAY BAKER LAST YEAR LEADING UP TO THE FIRST GAME!!! Of course that’s just another opinion and we all know what they say about opinions!!!
Trask was NOT the starter. Now that is a FREAKING FACT!!! Get over it!!

Buc61. You can’t give Baker all the credit bro because if it wasn’t for Winfield and our kicker we don’t make the playoffs because we lose against the Panthers week 17 . Our defense bailed this offense out of a lot of games !! I get you guys love Baker but you have to take the rose color glasses off and look at the team for who they are. And Baker played a major roll in that 6 game losing streak all but one of those games where he played well . But other 5 games he was not good. But I know how a lot of people call a good game when he plays bad for 3 quarters and pad his stats the final 3 minutes when the game is over but you can’t ignore the bad 3 quarters and 13 minutes and say he had a good game.

Steptebuc. Baker was a business decision not a football decision and we all have the proof from training camp last year. No one has confirmed that Baker was better not even Todd Bowles or Jason Licht. But he’s the starter and we have to root for him as fan base. But that don’t take away from fact that Trask was better. I remember the 9 picks to Kyle Trask 1 when both were practicing with the starters. And IRA came and said his scores told him Baker would be the starter regardless week 1 . And that’s a fact that can be proven!!

It’s fun to debate Talent vs Potential.
Trask represents the Potential of having a QB that is better than any Talent the Bucs have ever put behind center not named Brady.
In fact, I want a guy that LOOKS and PLAYS like BRADY. If only we drafted someone like that when Brady was here. If only, a charming alternative would have just turned left vs right.

I doesn’t really matter who was at center. It was the first day. Hainsey will be rusty and Barton will be nervous.
Give it some time, and we’ll see who is best at center.
So far as Trask vs Mayfield…Baker is the starter, and it will remain so until he does something to lose the role or gets injured.
Frankly, I hope both of them excel at this point.

You are 100% correct. Trask did outplay Mayfield in training last season according to several sources, including Joe himself, who wrote two articles after training camp had ended saying just that (they are in the JBF Archives). And, Joe was there in person, unlike stpetefsufan who hates Trask and refuses to read Joe’s articles on the matter.

For the 800th time, there was no way Todd Bowles was not going to start Baker Mayfield unless Trask practiced so well the Bucs couldn’t pull him off the field. Joe wrote this ***all*** last year. And by all accounts it was a wise move.
That’s become clearly obvious since.
Bowles was on the hot seat. There was ZEE-ROW chance to was going to risk his career with Kyle Trask unless Trask turned into the second-coming of Josh Allen. Anyone who thought otherwise was dropping shrooms, then and now.

Liking someone or friendship has nothing to do with who plays. Baker has elevated the play of every team he has played for. The training camp from last year proved that Trask was better for if you take the last names off the back of the jersey number 2 would have been the starter according to the play on the field. If Pete Carol would have been the coach Trask would have been the starter. It doesn’t matter who starts because you ain’t winning a superbowl with either of them. I think the first pick of the 2025 draft should be a quarterback. Yes Baker will be the starter because of the name. And if he plays bad you guys will blame the OC and say he’s learning a new offense. Baker Mayfield is Garden Michew and we don’t know what Kyle Trask is. To be honest I’m tired of this meadicorey you guys are celebrating a 17-17 team now let that sink in. You guys would choose Matt Flin over Russell Wilson or Alex Smith over Patrick Mahomes. Lol 🤣🤣

Diamond. Baker couldn’t do anything in Cleveland and they had a way better roster than us . They had the o line the defense and 2 good runningbacks with good receivers and a good TE. The Browns lost every time they put the game in his hands to win. It’s a lot of games they would have won in Cleveland if they would have just ran the ball. But they wanted Baker to be the reason why they won and they lost every time. Baker Mayfield is a game manger if they just let him be a game manger than my bucs could probably win and get to the NFC championship game.

Let’s not forget Baker beat Mahomes twice in college. Mahomes never beat Baker. Baker had to throw 7 touchdowns and almost 600 yards to beat him in 2017 but he beat him nonetheless. Baker won the Heisman in 2017 and was third in heisman voting in 2016, not Mahomes. He has all the talent needed to win a superbowl it has just been almost beat out of him by years of all that goes with being on the worst teams in the league. It will begin to re-emerge this coming year 2024.

It’s funny how you guys try to put doubt in people’s minds by continually repeating the “fact” that Trask out played Baker. Do you really think that is even a possibility? If it was they would have never went outside and hired another qb. They would have promoted him from within after Brady left. But they didn’t, they went out and got another qb that all the experts said would never be a starter in the NFL again. That’s all we need to know about Kyle Trask and his talent. The one thing we do know he was better than Baker Mayfield last year in training camp. And you can say what you want but the facts are the facts. Again you would have said the same thing if we would have had Alex Smith and Patrick Mahomes or Matt Flin and Russell Wilson you guys would have chosen Alex Smith and Matt Flin over Russell Wilson and Patrick Mahomes. We have Garden Michew at quarterback and the only way you win with quarterbacks like that is you have to take the game out of their hands to win. But I know the coaching staff will try to make Baker Mayfield win the game and that means he will be throwing 40 times a game and that will be the downfall of the bucs. I will be getting ready for the 2025 draft class by mid October if they have Baker Mayfield throwing that many times a game .

Todd is not to blame for Trask not starting. Baker being a free agent is. SOOOO, the situation is 100+ out of Kyles control. Anyone bashing him should think twice about defending Baker.
Kyle being on the Roster allowed the Bucs to take a RISK on Baker. Otherwise, they would have drafted a QB and let Baker go the way of journeyman QB somewhere else.
No Bucs fan is saying start Kyle over Baker at this point. We are just hoping the rope is not to long. Baker did not earn a longer rope last year. Just a fatter contract.

For the record, here is what Joe wrote after 2023 training camp had ended and the Bucs were into their preseason games:
AUGUST 13 2023 – “For Trask to get the QB1 gig, Joe believes, he had to out-practice/play Mayfield by a lot. He outplayed Mayfield a little in training camp.”

Mayfield was gifted the starting job. He broke .500 on the season thanks to our field goal kicker. I don’t know on what basis Joe can assume that had Trask rightly won the starting job he could not have gone .500 too, just like Baker.

106.3 passer rating in playoffs-4th highest in the league plenty good enough to win the superbowl. What do you people want? Mahomes only threw for 100.3 last year.
It’s the college group again isn’t it. Well Trask will never beat out a healthy Baker. Thats why Baker was drafted so high he beat Mahomes twice and Trask has no good film in college.

i have about gottin sick of the mayfield is a bum script. I can pick out one game last year that mayfield won but the Bucs lost and for those of you who laude the defense you need to rewatch some of those games that were lost in the fourth quarter, but i will point out the houston game where the defense was not even on the field in the last quarter. Get real here its a team game and a lot of blame is placed on one man who by the way played a key roll in making the experts eat their words as they won a divison they were sposed to place last in. Just for the record, the Browns defensive rankings for points allowed during Mayfield’s 4 years were 21,20,21,13, hardly the great defense that some are claiming he enjoyed.

I have talked a lot about Baker beating Mahomes twice in college and how he came very close to winning the Heisman TWICE in 2016 & 2017. Look it up. How he threw 7 touchdowns and almost 600 yards in one game to beat Mahomes. How Baker, in college owned the passer rating his senior year. Out of ALL the hundreds of qb that played in college Baker had the best passing game. How people always misread his abilities and because of that he is the only walk-on to ever win the Heisman. Shall I go on about how bad your statement is concerning I say college doesn’t mean anything, because there is more? You guys are doing what Baker has had done to him his whole career from high school on and he just keeps proving you experts wrong. That is why we like him as much as we do, he is the quentissential underdog and in 2024 he is going to make all you haters eat your words. How in the world can you not like someone that has had to fight for everything they get and they do? Man y’all used that word hate every time someone criticize a player who you like. I don’t think the people on this site hates Baker Mayfield or any other player in the NFL. I said it before and I will say it again the only way to win with Baker is to let him be a game manger and not the main reason why we win or lose. This year there is no learning curve. Baker played for Coen at LAR. It won,t take all year to gel.if he stays healthy he will be better, faster, and longer.

Bill . They won a division with the same record as the saints 9-8 . When are guys are going to stop celebrating meadicorey is the real question. The bucs are 17 -17 the past 2 years that’s not good. Baker Mayfield is who he is at this point of his career. I don’t give a quarterback credit for playing bad for 3 quarters and with about the last 3 minutes of the game he pad his stats. That’s not a good game at all and you can’t give him credit for that!! But I can definitely name some games that Baker didn’t play good at all. The bucs need to draft a quarterback in the first round next year. They have to stop letting Trask practice with the starters or Joe has to stop telling everything what’s going on in practice because it’s crazy hearing that Trask was playing better than our 6 year veteran quarterback who started every year and he’s looking worse than a guy with no experience. The real bucs fans want the best players on the field we don’t care about who’s the most popular player. But I know Joe will never report that again like he did last training camp you know what’s really going on field. If he pays real close attention he will learn that even if you spend the first 6 years of your career on the worst teams the league has to offer you can still elevate their play/records while you’re there. Very few qbs have done that and that would be a skill Kyle could learn that might help him out later in his career.

Bucbuclind. Baker had a good team around him in Cleveland and we know now the Browns tanked to get him . He had a good o line and 2 good runningbacks with good receivers and a good defense. He also had a good TE so this notion that Baker didn’t have good players is a lie. My push back with Cleveland was it was games that the could have won by just running ball and they try and throw the ball with Baker Mayfield and they will lose every time. That’s why you have to let Baker just mange the game because Baker Mayfield can’t put a offense on his back and go win games .

It wasn’t a matter of Joe giving his opinion. He gave us play by play results throughout training camp. Almost every throw made by BM and KT. Quite honestly, he said KT looked a little better but the BM was going to get the nod because of KT’s lack of experience.
