Why Not Go After A Corner?

April 2nd, 2024

Physical Michigan corner Mike Sainristil.

Joe isn’t overly sold on the cornerback depth.

And remember the philosophy of Father Dungy? He believed you can never have enough good cornerbacks. He drafted a corner every year he was with the Bucs.

Yeah, Joe knows Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht stocked up on lesser corners for depth. But why not get a guy in the second round who can push Zyon McCollum and Jamel Dean for playing time, or maybe even start?

Bucs legend Rondé Barber, in a video for The33rdTeam.com, really likes this Mike Sainristil of Michigan. Sainristil may not be your ideal size for a corner (5-9) but Joe really doesn’t give a damn if he isn’t a first-round pick.

If a guy can ball, he can ball. And it seems Sainristil can ball. Sainristil enjoys splashing ballcarriers (that will get Todd Bowles’ attention) and is a smart, clutch player. A ballhawk.

In Michigan’s championship season, Sainristil had six picks, two fumble recoveries, two sacks and six pass breakups.

Barber really likes the guy’s instincts. And if Barber likes him, that’s good enough for Joe (although Barber did like Vernon Hargreaves).

This Sainristil might be a strong pick late in the second round when the Bucs are on the clock on the second night of the draft.

I think they definitely will. They have looked at plenty

  2. SB~LV Says:

Must have seen the same YouTube as I last night. Several other “Flags” , the two DT’s got me thinking too …

  3. Tampabaybucfan Says:

A team can never ever have enough CBs…..

I’m hoping Licht hangs onto the extra pick instead of trading it. We need some quality players and best chances are for them to be there in rounds 1-3.

  4. @Hands2theFace Says:

Terrion Arnold is the real deal. If he makes it to 26, and that’s our pick, I will be excited to see the backend of our D. Winfield Jr., Whitehead, Dean, Arnold, Izien, Hall, and McCollum. Arnold was a 5-star safety out of high school.

  5. SB~LV Says:

Oh I saw Mike Sainristil on Joel Klatt YouTube yesterday and yes player mentality is a must or you might go bust!

  6. BPBucsfan Says:

Heck, why not draft a good edge rusher. It’s not like the pass rush was setting the world on fire 🔥 or anything.

  7. David Says:

In no particular order, I would imagine these are the positions they are targeting the first 4 rounds

    OL
    Edge
    DB
    LB
    WR

  8. Pickgrin Says:

NO to a 5’9″ CB in the 2nd rd!

I can see picking a CB with one of the two 3rd round picks – and perhaps a RB, WR, TE or ILB with the other 3rd rd pick….

Selections in rds 1 and 2 this year NEED to be used on an Edge and a G/C in whichever order makes the most sense based on available talent when we pick.

  9. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Welcome to the “Need a top-shelf CB” Club. Plenty of room on the bandwagon.

  10. zzbucs Says:

Doesn´t make ANY sense to me to go for a CB on first round….
When you have needs like OL DL or pass rushers like the Bucs do, you have to get them on 1 rounds. Those are crucial positions as QB or WR…..Secondary are not…..

Dont waste a 1 rounder on a CB or a Safety, just stupid

  11. John Sinclear Says:

If Kool-Aid McKinstry’s still on the board – grab him! Otherwise for for an Edge.

  12. John Sinclear Says:

Go for, not for for. Fingers do not obey me!

  13. LovetheBucs79 Says:

How about all stop lying about podcasts

  14. Bucnjim Says:

It’s not a waste if you land a top-10 player @ #26. That’s where the best available comes in. Do you want a project at Edge who hasn’t done crap in college, or do you want someone with a higher potential to be a special player maybe even a pro bowler?

  15. Joe in Michigan Says:

I was thinking maybe a CB with one of the Bucs 3rd Round picks…I don’t rule out a short CB, but please FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, not short and slow CB like VH3 or MJ Stewart.

    ^^^^^
Look at Kool-Aid’s lack of interceptions. Probably not someone the Bucs would draft.

  17. Scott Says:

Is there is an elite corner there we need to get him. Licht needs to redeem himself from the first round cornerback bust In the past

  18. First Name Greatest Says:

Why draft a physical corner when the scheme calls for him to play super SUPER soft zone coverage 90% of the time?

Waste of a pick with this scheme

  19. Hearty Dikerson Says:

This regime has spent so much draft capital and salary cap on CBs, yet we’re a 29th-ranked unit. Whether it’s Todd’s soft zone scheme or management not being able to identify ballhawk CBs, this is a unit that regularly underperforms.

Why blow a 1st round pick on yet another CB if he’s just going to line up 15 yards off the line every play? If Todd’s system allows for easy completions and uncontested catches, let’s use that draft capital elsewhere.

  20. JimBobBuc Says:

Our 26 and 57 picks need to be starters for the majority of the season. We need upgrades at center (Hainsey), left guard, DT (Hall), and Edge (JTS). In my mind those are the priorities. With the age and contracts of Evan, Godwin, LVD, and others, we need rookies who can contribute right away before we have to rebuild in a couple years.

  21. Joe Says:

This regime has spent so much draft capital and salary cap on CBs, yet we’re a 29th-ranked unit.

    No edge rush. Simple.

  22. Bojim Says:

    Couldn’t Hargreaves ball? 😉

  23. Bucs Guy Says:

Absolutely agree with PickGrin and others. CB should be addresed in the 3rd or 4th round and not any earlier.

  24. Boge Says:

It’s too bad we couldn’t address our needs at edge before the draft. It kind of backs us into a corner. I’m still hopeful we can trade a day 2 or 3 pick for an established edge rusher.

  25. Lord Cornelius Says:

If we add a CB I want a versatile guy that can play on the boundary because that’s where we have no depth. If/when Dean misses time then who is starting there?

The name Kool-Aid is enough for me lol – so I’m OK with him.

    Edge
    OL
    CB
    RB
    WR
    ILB

Those are my order of biggest needs. Biggest weakness on defense was pass rush and pass D. Biggest weakness on offense was interior OL and RB.

We could use competition at 3WR spot especially since this OC has a history of running mostly 3 WR sets.

I just did a mock and this would be almost like a worst case in terms of who was available the first 2 rounds lol but I still would be happy:

    1-Kool Aid CB
    2-Marshawn Kneeland DE
    3-Jermaine Burton WR
    3-Jaylen Wright RB
    4-Mason McCormick OC

  26. BA’s Red Pen Says:

Let’s not draft any player based off their nickname. Only a couple of players with catchy names ever panned out.

  27. Beeej Says:

I’m waiting for a dude name Purple Drank

  28. Mike Johnson Says:

Why not go after a corner in the 1st? because out Bucs need IMMEDIATE help
on the edge. No pass rush..No win games. Stevie Wonder can see that.

  29. Buc1987 Says:

    No midgets at DB.

    5-9 that’s tiny!

  30. Dave Pear Says:

Hargreaves had talent but no work ethic. Didn’t study or work on his craft after his rookie year. What a waste. And just to make sure he was toast, Lovie Amith took care of his final demise.

  31. firethecannons Says:

Hate a 1st round on corner, get edge#1 then get corner or center

  32. LovetheBucs79 Says:

This site has fallen off. Misleading fans about podcasts for extra clicks, joe whining about Edges when we have Diaby. Negativity, redundant articles. Podcasts made this site and they are no more. Every other Bucs site has way better articles. While waiting for lied about pending podcast, I’ve learned how weak and silly the takes are here. Joe’s know nothing much about football and Ira is outdated. Probably no podcasts bcuz they have nothing meaningful to say

  33. Dave Pear Says:

Bye 79. No one will miss you.

  34. Stanglassman Says:

Clemson’s CB Nate Wiggins is more likely the choice if he’s still on the board @26. 6’ 1” height with 4.28 speed fits Bowles’s profile.

  35. Stanglassman Says:

If the top 2 IOL guys Barton and JPJ are gone along with all the top Edge, T, WRs, and QBs @26 then it’s going to push down a top CB like Wiggins. Bucs will be fortunate if this happens. Fill their IOL and ILB needs in round 2 & 3. RB, TE and possibly a Qb on day 3.

  36. Stanglassman Says:

I would add WR to that late day 2 early day 3 list.

  37. Locked In Says:

“Barber really likes the guy’s instincts. And if Barber likes him, that’s good enough for Joe (although Barber did like Vernon Hargreaves).”

Didn’t Barber also like Chris Conte?

  38. heyjude Says:

Agreeing with others, the 3rd and 4th rounds for a corner. We have other needs to fill in the first two rounds.

  39. A Bucs Fan Says:

As long as he loves football more than women and weed he won’t end up like Vernon.

  40. Tucker Says:

I see some people didn’t read the article Joe said late second round but a 5’9″ cb yeah I’ll pass I don’t care who likes him. Not sold on Kool aid either or even a cb in the first period cuz I don’t the there will be someone worth that draft pick at CB for 26. You can kinda draft for need in the first while not reaching by going through your positions of need and the bucs have a few holes to fill. Some fans are narrow focus on two positions even if they would be reaching that’s a recipe for failure for sure.

  41. Jake been there since the beginning Says:

Everybody needs to chill a little man. We all know what we know about the JL does things. All of us want this and that, but let’s let them do their thing. It’s gonna work out we have JTS we’ll put in at corner.. That’s the words that’ll bring a laugh.. haha!!!

  42. Pickgrin Says:

Yes to Wiggins if Turner, Verse, Latu, JPJ and Barton are off the board.

I’m convinced though that the best way to improve the TEAM this year is to improve the offense. The middle of the Oline was a GLARING problem last year (and in 2022) so its only logical that high end resources need to go there.

Screw “BPA” unless its forced upon you in the 1st round. –

If I was GM – I would get the best edge rusher and the 2 best G/C prospects (in whatever order) I could find in this draft with 3 of those 4 picks from day 1 and day 2.

Thats the best way the Bucs can afford – to be as complete and competitive of a team as possible in 2024.

  43. HC Grover Says:

Maybe we will Corner the market.

  44. Conner50 Says:

We don’t need a corner in the first round unless all the edge rushers are taken, even then I would rather see a wr drafted in the first round than corner. I think Zyon will have a really good year 3 and Hall is a good depth guy. We can get a DB in the third round when we pick twice.

  45. Simeon4HOF Says:

The Bucs didn’t trade Davis to draft a C in Rd 1. Ofcourse there are going to be some good dB prospects in our range. We have enough CB depth for now. We need to go IOL in Rd 1 not a CB

  46. Dave Pear Says:

Jason knows. We call all speculate and pontificate. Jason knows best.

  47. The Big Sombrero Says:

Since they added CBs in free agency and drafted edge rush defense last year… I am thinking they draft offensive lineman early… would be nice to get a speedy slot WR to help Godwin and Evans…

  48. BUCman Says:

He is a NICKEL CORNER not an OUTSIDE CORNER. We already have a full house at NICKEL CORNER (Izien, Thomas, Hayes). First round options at 26 could be McKinstry, Wiggins, Tampa, and DeJean. Second round options could be Melton or Abrams-Draine.
